Trading in an old phone is worth it when the offer you can actually collect compares favorably with what you would net from selling the same device—and the convenience and terms work for you. A headline promotion is not automatically cash: it may depend on your plan, device eligibility, inspection, deadlines, or monthly bill credits. Compare real offers for your exact phone before deciding.
What determines what your old phone is worth?
There is no reliable value for an “old phone” in general. Offers depend on the exact make and model, storage capacity, condition, and carrier or unlock status. Start with the provider’s live estimator, but treat its figure as an estimate until you have read the terms and the device has been inspected.

For example, Apple’s trade-in terms say a quote may change if the phone’s condition does not match the description, Find My has not been turned off, or the device misses the stated receipt window. Verizon’s terms say final value is confirmed after validating identifying details and condition. AT&T’s trade-in information also ties value to model and condition and gives submission deadlines that may affect an offer.
How to compare a trade-in with selling
- Identify your device accurately. Confirm its model, storage, carrier or unlock status, and condition before getting quotes. Use the same description for every provider and marketplace.
- Get a trade-in estimate and read the offer terms. Separate the device’s base value from any promotional amount. Check the eligible device and plan, purchase or activation requirements, minimum device value, credit schedule, submission deadline, and what happens if you change or cancel service or financing.
- Get an alternative buyback quote and check recent sold prices. Compare offers for the same phone and condition, not asking prices for different models or uncompleted listings. Swappa’s trade-in FAQ describes prepaid shipping and no quote or listing fees for its trade-in process; the accepted offer depends on the device matching the selected condition.
- Calculate what a private sale would net. Subtract marketplace charges, payment-processing fees, shipping and packaging costs, and any other applicable expenses from a realistic sale price. Swappa says sellers pay a 3% sale fee plus payment-processing fees; check the fee schedule in force when you list.
- Decide whether the difference justifies the work and risk. A private sale can take more time, and its proceeds are not certain until a buyer completes the transaction. Compare the expected net with the trade-in value you can actually realize, then decide whether the extra effort and delay are worthwhile.
When a trade-in is likely to make sense
- The provider’s offer is confirmed for your exact phone and condition.
- A promotional amount is available to you under terms you are willing and able to meet.
- You are comfortable receiving the value as an instant discount, gift card, account credit, or recurring bill credits rather than immediate cash.
- The expected advantage of selling privately is too small to justify listing, arranging payment, and handling shipment.
For a promotion paid through monthly bill credits, evaluate the credits you expect to collect under the offer’s rules—not the full advertised amount as if it were cash in hand. Read the applicable terms before committing; Verizon’s promotional terms, for example, make promotional value conditional on the offer criteria.

When selling may be the better choice
Selling may suit you if a recent sold-price comparison suggests that the amount left after fees and costs would be meaningfully higher than the trade-in value you can realize. The difference is your compensation for the added work and uncertainty, so set a threshold that makes those worthwhile for you. Do not assume resale always pays more: the answer varies by phone, condition, offer, and transaction costs.
What to do before handing over the phone
- Back up anything you want to keep, then follow the chosen provider’s current instructions to disconnect accounts, remove activation locks, and erase the device.
- Photograph or otherwise document its condition and identifying details before shipment or handoff.
- Follow the provider’s packaging, shipping, and receipt instructions, and keep the shipping record.
- Save the quote and offer terms so you can check the final valuation, credit schedule, and any deadline.
Activation locks can affect processing or value. T-Mobile’s trade-in guidance warns that a locked device can delay processing or affect its value, and says an accepted trade-in cannot be returned. Check the applicable provider’s procedure before sending your phone.

Make the decision with the final numbers
Write down the trade-in value you can realistically collect, including when and how it will be paid, alongside the likely sale proceeds after fees and costs. If the sale’s net advantage is worth the extra work and uncertainty, sell it. If the trade-in offer is competitive—or the convenience is worth more to you—trade it in. No general market average settles the choice; the sources cited here do not establish an independent average difference between trade-in and resale proceeds.
