What you’re comparing
A manufacturer’s warranty is the manufacturer’s promise to stand behind its product. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that a service contract is different from a warranty, even when it is marketed as an “extended warranty.” The manufacturer’s warranty describes coverage and remedies for specified defects during its term; a paid service contract has its own provider, terms, costs, and claim process. Compare the terms side by side
Use the actual warranty and contract to fill in this checklist. If the contract does not list an item as covered, do not assume it is covered.

| Provider and contract rules | The company legally responsible for the service contract, along with its cancellation and transfer rules. Check the provider’s reputation. |
Check whether the paid plan adds protection
Compare the coverage dates and named repairs first. If the service contract covers the same failures during a period already covered by the manufacturer, that overlap may reduce the plan’s added value. Then look at what protection, if any, continues after the manufacturer’s warranty ends, and whether the contract’s exclusions, fees, remedy, and claims process make that protection useful to you.

Judge the extra benefits against the full cost, not just the advertised price. The FTC recommends considering whether the coverage adds benefits for its cost. Setting money aside for possible repairs is another option, but it is not automatically better: the right choice depends on the appliance, contract, repair risk, price, and your ability to handle an unexpected bill. FTC guidance does not establish repair costs or failure rates for a particular appliance, so avoid treating a general rule or unsourced estimate as a prediction.
Know the U.S. warranty basics
In the United States, the FTC says warranty terms must be available for consumers to read before purchase. Federal law generally prevents a manufacturer from requiring specific branded parts or services to preserve warranty coverage unless those parts or services are provided free or the FTC grants a waiver. State law affects implied warranties; for a state-specific question or dispute, contact your state consumer protection office or a lawyer. Keep the documents you may need
Retain the written manufacturer’s warranty and the purchase receipt. Keep the paid contract and related claim records with them so you can check the terms and provide required documentation if you need service.
