How to Compare AI Stocks With Broad-Market Index Funds

Compare a specific company’s business exposure, concentration, risks, and costs with a specific index fund’s benchmark, holdings, fees, and tracking record. A fund marketed as broad-market may already own major companies associated with AI, but its label alone does not reveal how much exposure it has. Neither an AI connection nor diversification predicts a particular return or prevents losses.

Start by defining what you are comparing

“AI stock” is not a standardized investment category in the sources cited here. Before comparing companies, state your selection rule: for example, a company’s reported revenue from AI-related products, a business segment it describes in its filings, or a specific role in the AI supply chain. Do not treat the label as evidence that a company will benefit financially from AI.

For the fund, identify its exact ticker or share class and the index it tracks. An index fund seeks to track an index; it may hold every security in that index or use a representative sample. The index’s construction rules matter: in a market-cap-weighted index, larger companies have larger weights, so holdings do not contribute equally. See the SEC’s guide to index funds.

Compare exposure and concentration

A share in one company gives you exposure to that company. An index fund pools exposure across securities in its benchmark, but the fund’s name does not tell you how many holdings it has, what its largest positions are, or how concentrated it is.

#1 Best Overall

Use dated holdings and benchmark information to compare:

  • The fund’s number of holdings and largest positions, including each position’s weight.
  • Its sector exposures and how much the largest companies contribute to the portfolio.
  • Whether the company you are considering is already held by the fund, and its weight there.
  • For the individual company, the business or revenue evidence behind your AI-related classification.

A total stock market index fund may hold thousands of companies, according to the SEC, but that description is not a holdings count for any particular fund. A few individual stocks do not provide the same company-level diversification as a broad portfolio. Conversely, targeted or custom indexes may hold overlapping securities or create unexpected concentrations. The SEC’s guide to asset allocation and diversification and its discussion of non-traditional index funds explain why holdings and index rules deserve a closer look.

Separate company risk from fund risk

An individual company carries company-specific risks, such as changes in its business prospects or the price investors are willing to pay for its shares. Assess those risks from the company’s current filings rather than inferring them from an AI label.

An index fund spreads exposure across its benchmark, which can reduce reliance on one company’s results; it does not eliminate market risk or guarantee that the fund will avoid losses. The fund can still be concentrated in its largest companies or sectors, depending on the index. It can also differ from the benchmark because of fees, trading costs, sampling, and tracking error. Consider the benchmark’s composition and the fund’s strategy alongside the holdings.

Compare costs, performance, and taxes on a consistent basis

Costs

Check the fund’s current prospectus fee table for operating expenses, then account for any transaction charges or platform costs that apply to you. Fees reduce the assets left in the portfolio to earn returns over time, even when a fee appears small. Trading and account costs vary by provider, and you should not assume every index fund costs less than every actively managed fund. The SEC explains the effect of fees in its investor bulletin on fees and expenses.

Performance and tracking

Compare a fund’s performance with the benchmark it actually tracks, using matching dates and a consistent return basis. Fund returns can differ from index returns because of expenses, trading costs, sampling, and tracking error. Do not compare a company’s selected period with a fund’s different period and draw a conclusion from the mismatch. Past performance does not establish what either investment will return in the future.

Taxes

Tax consequences depend on account type, investor circumstances, and distributions. The comparison method here does not establish jurisdiction-specific tax treatment, so check the rules that apply where you live and to your account.

Use dated documents to verify the comparison

  1. For the fund: Read the current prospectus and most recent shareholder report. Verify the objective, benchmark, strategy, risks, fee table, holdings, and stated performance period. A prospectus describes a fund’s objective, strategy, risks, fees, performance, and pricing.
  2. For the company: Review its latest annual and quarterly filings for its business description, risk factors, and financial statements. Use the filings to support your stated rule for calling it AI-related.
  3. For both: Record the date of the holdings, fees, benchmark information, and performance figures you use. These details can change, so avoid presenting an undated snapshot as current.

The SEC’s overview of information available to investment-company shareholders describes where to find fund disclosures. No current company-level valuation, AI-stock basket, or matched stock-versus-fund return comparison is established here; such comparisons require dated company filings and fund data.
