The reliable way to compare AI model costs is to run every candidate on the same representative workload, record every billed category and retry, apply each provider’s dated rates, and measure both monthly spend and cost per successful task. A headline input-token price is only one part of that calculation.
Start with a workload-based comparison
Choose a sample of real production requests, not a generic prompt set. Run each candidate against the same prompts, source data, tools and evaluation rubric. Record input and output tokens, cached input, cache writes, tool calls, retries, latency requirements and whether the result met an agreed quality threshold.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
For every candidate, calculate:
- Total estimated monthly spend at your expected request volume.
- Cost per request, including all applicable token, tool and service charges.
- Cost per successful task at the selected quality threshold.
- Successful-completion rate, retry count and any human-correction work.
This is a workload comparison, not a universal ranking. The cheapest model for one input/output mix, cache pattern or geography may be expensive for another.

Input and output are billed differently
Most API pricing separates input tokens from output tokens. A model that looks inexpensive on input can cost more when your tasks generate long answers, code, structured data or multiple tool results. Measure both sides from actual requests instead of multiplying a single headline rate by total tokens.

Cached input and cache writes can change the result
Some providers price cached input separately from ordinary input and may charge for writing data into a cache. A workload with a large reusable system prompt can therefore have a different effective rate from one with mostly unique context. Log cache hits and writes as separate categories, then apply the corresponding rates.
Tools and service modes add categories
Tool calls may have usage-based charges in addition to model tokens. Batch processing, regional endpoints, long-context options and latency tiers can also change the bill. Include each category that appears on the provider’s current pricing page; do not assume it is included in the token rate.
Tokenizers can produce different counts
The same text does not necessarily produce the same token count across models. Anthropic’s pricing documentation says Claude Opus 4.7 and later Opus models, Claude Fable 5, Claude Mythos 5 and Claude Sonnet 5 use a tokenizer that produces approximately 30% more tokens for the same text, with the exact increase depending on content and workload. This is a provider-specific note, not a rule to apply to every vendor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDefine the workload and success threshold
Select a representative sample
Take a dated sample from production traffic that reflects the work you expect to run next month. Include routine, difficult and failure-prone cases. If requests vary substantially, keep those classes visible rather than averaging them into one opaque number.
- Include the normal system instructions, user messages, retrieved documents and output format.
- Preserve the real context lengths and attachment or tool payloads that affect tokenization.
- Record request volume by task type so you can model a changing mix later.
- Exclude traffic you would not send to the candidates in a real deployment.
Write an observable quality rubric
Before comparing models, define what counts as success. A rubric might require factual fields to be present, a JSON schema to validate, a classification to match an approved label, or a support answer to pass a human review. The threshold must be identical for every candidate.
Keep quality separate from cost. A low-cost response that needs manual rewriting is not a successful low-cost task. Record human correction or escalation when it is part of your operational process.
Keep execution conditions consistent
Use the same prompts, data, tool definitions, sampling settings and maximum output limits where the APIs allow equivalent controls. If a candidate requires a different setting, document it and explain why. Do not quietly give one model extra retries or a larger context window.
Instrument every request
A reproducible comparison starts with a request log. Retain the raw sample, the assumptions, the rate-page access date and the calculation. The following fields cover the categories that commonly affect spend and success:
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Request and task type | Stable ID and workload class | Lets you group costs and success by task. |
| Candidate and model version | Exact model identifier and edition | Prevents rates or behavior from being attributed to the wrong model. |
| Input tokens | Billed uncached input tokens | Applies the ordinary input rate. |
| Cached input | Tokens billed as cache hits | May use a separate cache-hit rate. |
| Cache writes | Tokens written to a provider cache | May incur a cache-write charge. |
| Output tokens | Billed generated tokens | Applies the output rate. |
| Tool usage | Tool calls, tool type and returned payload size | Captures usage-based tool or extra-token charges. |
| Retries | Every additional attempt and its token usage | Counts work required to reach a successful result. |
| Latency and service mode | Observed latency and selected processing tier | Shows whether a faster or premium mode changes cost. |
| Outcome | Pass/fail against the rubric and correction status | Enables cost-per-successful-task calculations. |
| Region and endpoint | Processing location and API endpoint | Captures regional pricing and data-residency constraints. |
Store raw usage data alongside the summarized totals. If a provider changes its usage fields, you can recalculate the comparison without rerunning the workload.
Build a dated rate sheet
For each candidate, copy the applicable prices and conditions from the provider’s official pricing documentation on the day you calculate the estimate. Record the access date, currency, pricing unit, model version, region, service tier and eligibility rules. Rates and model availability are volatile, so a result without a rate date will age quickly.

Apply category-specific prices
For each request, calculate each category separately:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
input spend = billed input tokens × input price per pricing unit
cached-input spend = cached input tokens × cache-hit price per pricing unit
cache-write spend = cache-write tokens × cache-write price per pricing unit
output spend = billed output tokens × output price per pricing unit
tool spend = billable tool usage × applicable tool price
Add the categories for the request, sum all requests in the sample, then scale to the expected monthly volume. Keep token units consistent; if a price is quoted per million tokens, convert observed tokens to millions before multiplying.
Account for current OpenAI pricing conditions
The official OpenAI API pricing page lists separate rates for input, cached input, cache writes and output, along with additional product and processing distinctions. It states that eligible models released on or after March 5, 2026 incur a 10% uplift when using regional processing endpoints. It also says Fast mode was renamed from Priority processing on July 30, 2026, and that GPT-5.6 Sol promotional pricing is available at least through November 21, 2026.
Treat those details as dated conditions, not permanent assumptions. Confirm the model’s eligibility, endpoint and promotion status immediately before quoting a rate or making a budget decision.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
The Batch API allows asynchronous processing of large volumes of requests with a 50% discount on both input and output tokens.
Use the discount only when your workload qualifies for asynchronous processing and can tolerate its service characteristics. Do not apply it to interactive traffic merely because batch would be cheaper on paper.
Compare API candidates on identical work
Run the same prompts and data
- Freeze the workload sample and redact or protect data according to your production requirements.
- Send each request to every candidate with equivalent instructions, context and tool definitions.
- Capture usage metadata from the API response, including all token categories the provider exposes.
- Allow the same retry policy, or report a different policy explicitly when an API imposes a constraint.
- Evaluate every output with the same automated checks and human rubric.
Count retries and tool loops
A model that fails schema validation twice before succeeding consumed the tokens and tool calls from all three attempts. Include them in spend and mark the final task as successful only if it met the rubric. Likewise, count multi-step tool loops as part of the task rather than comparing only the first model response.

Separate latency from price
Record latency and service requirements even when they do not appear as a direct charge. A low-cost asynchronous option may not satisfy an interactive response-time target. Conversely, a premium processing tier may be justified if it avoids queueing or missed service-level commitments. Report the cost and the operational constraint together.

Sample cost
Sum all billed categories for each candidate’s observed sample:
sample cost = input + cached input + cache writes + output + tools + other applicable service charges

Cost per successful task
Divide total spend by the number of tasks that met the quality threshold:
cost per successful task = total candidate spend ÷ successful tasks
Include failed attempts and retries in total spend. This metric exposes cases where a cheaper first response requires more recovery work.
Report a range when volume is uncertain
Model low, expected and high monthly volumes, and vary the task mix if that mix is not stable. Keep the rate sheet fixed for the scenario and label the calculation date. Recalculate when rates, model versions, regions or service modes change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use consistent comparison axes
For two or more candidates, present the decision on the same axes rather than ranking a universal “cheapest model.”
| Axis | Question to answer | Evidence from the workload |
|---|---|---|
| Quality | How often does the candidate meet the agreed threshold? | Rubric pass rate and correction records. |
| Cost efficiency | What does each successful task cost? | Category-level spend divided by successful tasks. |
| Monthly budget | What will the expected request mix cost? | Volume-scaled estimate by task class. |
| Token mix | Are costs driven by input, output, cache or tokenization? | Observed billed-token categories. |
| Batch and cache behavior | Can the workload use discounts or cache hits? | Eligibility, hit rate and write volume. |
| Tools and retries | How much extra work is needed to finish? | Tool charges, call count and retry rate. |
| Latency and service | Does the candidate meet the response requirement? | Observed latency and selected processing mode. |
| Geography | Are regional processing or residency rules required? | Endpoint, region and applicable modifier. |
| Deployment scope | Is this an API comparison or a self-hosted deployment? | Infrastructure and lifecycle assumptions. |
API pricing and self-hosting are different scopes
An API estimate covers provider usage categories. A self-hosted estimate must include the infrastructure required to serve the model and keep it available.
Include infrastructure utilization
- Accelerator or server capacity reserved for the model.
- Actual utilization, including idle capacity and traffic peaks.
- Storage, networking, orchestration and monitoring.
- Redundancy, failover and capacity for maintenance.
- Engineering and operations time needed to deploy and update the system.
Include lifecycle costs
Account for acquisition or rental, depreciation or replacement, software support, power and cooling where applicable, and the cost of upgrades. Amortize one-time setup over a stated period. A low token or GPU unit rate does not by itself prove that self-hosting is cheaper overall.
Make the scopes explicit
Do not place an API token bill beside a bare accelerator rental price and call them equivalent. Compare fully loaded monthly operating cost and cost per successful task under the same quality, latency, availability and data-residency requirements. If infrastructure utilization is an assumption, show the assumption and run sensitivity scenarios.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
Using a single headline rate
Problem: multiplying all tokens by the input price.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix: separate input, cached input, cache writes, output, tools and other billed services.
Best Value
Ignoring retries and human correction
Problem: comparing only the first response.
Fix: log every attempt and count a task as successful only after it meets the rubric.
Mixing regions or processing modes
Problem: applying a standard endpoint rate to regional or premium traffic.
Fix: record endpoint, geography and service mode for every candidate.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming token counts are interchangeable
Problem: estimating one model’s tokens from another model’s tokenizer.
Fix: use observed billed tokens for each model. The Anthropic tokenizer note illustrates why this matters.
Applying a discount without checking eligibility
Problem: using batch or cache discounts for traffic that cannot use those services.
Fix: document eligibility, timing and workload fit before applying a modifier.
Quoting stale prices
Problem: publishing a rate without an access date.
Fix: recheck the official pricing page immediately before calculation or publication and preserve the dated rate sheet.
A repeatable decision workflow
- Define the production tasks, expected monthly volume and quality threshold.
- Draw a representative, dated sample and preserve the original inputs.
- List every candidate’s model version, endpoint, region and service mode.
- Run identical prompts, data, tools and evaluation checks for each candidate.
- Capture input, output, cached input, cache writes, tool usage, retries, latency and outcomes.
- Retrieve current official rates and record the page access date and eligibility rules.
- Calculate category-level sample spend, then scale by workload class and monthly volume.
- Divide total spend by successful tasks, including failed attempts and correction work.
- Compare quality, cost, latency, cache and batch behavior, geography and deployment scope.
- Set a review trigger for any rate, model, tokenizer, endpoint or workload-mix change.
Keep the raw log, rubric, assumptions and formulas together. Another person should be able to reproduce the estimate without guessing which rate, region or retry policy you used.
