To compare AI companies’ revenue claims fairly, first identify what each number measures, who reported it, and for what period. Then check whether the figures use the same accounting presentation—especially for sales through cloud or other partners—and keep reported revenue separate from annualized estimates, profit, and cash flow.
Start by identifying exactly what the number represents
Do not treat every figure labeled “revenue” as the same kind of result. A completed-period revenue figure, an annual recurring revenue (ARR) estimate, an annualized run rate, bookings, billings, and a forecast answer different questions. Record the exact label used by the company or report; do not silently convert a run rate into annual revenue.

For each claim, note who made it, where and when it appeared, its stated period, currency, business scope, and metric definition. Source quality matters: a public-company filing or earnings release is different from an investor presentation or a figure attributed to sources in a media report. Identify the source in your comparison rather than presenting all figures as equally verified.

Match the period, scope, and currency
Compare like with like: the same duration, fiscal or calendar period, currency, geography, and business scope. A public company’s completed fiscal year is not directly comparable to a private company’s revenue pace in a recent month multiplied to produce an annualized estimate. If the periods or scopes do not align, state the difference rather than implying an apples-to-apples comparison.

Microsoft’s FY2026 reporting illustrates why the period belongs alongside the number: its results release, dated July 29, 2026, covers the fiscal year ended June 30, 2026. The release also explains exclusions used in its non-GAAP results. Its FY2026 results release and 2026 Form 10-K provide primary-source context for distinguishing a dated reported result from a separately defined adjusted measure.
Do not equate ARR with recognized revenue
ARR is not a standardized accounting measure. One SEC-filed company definition says its ARR is not defined under GAAP, has no standardized meaning, and is not a forecast. That is an issuer-specific explanation, not a universal definition of ARR; check the company’s own wording and calculation before comparing it with another company’s figure. The filing is available through the SEC.

Recognized revenue is reported for a defined accounting period. An annualized figure instead expresses a pace as though it continued for a year; it is not, by itself, revenue already recognized over a completed year. Bookings, billings, and forecasts also have distinct meanings and should retain their labels.
Check how partner sales are presented
When a company sells or delivers a service through a cloud or other partner, the accounting analysis can affect whether the company reports the full amount paid by the customer as revenue or reports only its fee. This gross-versus-net question depends on the company’s role and responsibilities in the specified transaction. A difference in presentation is a reason to investigate the accounting policy; by itself, it does not establish that either company’s reporting is improper.

The SEC’s December 13, 2022 non-GAAP interpretations warn that a revenue measure may be misleading if it changes required GAAP gross-versus-net treatment—for example, by deducting transaction costs as if the company were an agent when gross presentation as a principal is required, or the reverse. This is conditional guidance, not a finding about a particular AI company. See the SEC staff interpretations and, for the accounting framework, Microsoft’s 2026 Form 10-K. Microsoft describes its policy this way: “Revenue is recognized upon transfer of control of promised products or services to customers in an amount that reflects the consideration we expect to receive in exchange for those products or services.” That statement describes Microsoft’s accounting policy; it is not a blanket rule for resolving every company’s partner arrangement.
What recent OpenAI and Anthropic figures do—and do not—show
Axios reported on October 8, 2026 that OpenAI’s annualized revenue was $50 billion, roughly $20 billion below an earlier reported $70 billion figure. Axios described the earlier figure as an attempt to gross up revenue using Anthropic’s methodology to create a closer comparison. These are reported figures based on investor materials and journalistic sources, not audited historical revenue established by that article. Keep the attribution and “annualized” label attached to the numbers. See Axios’s October 8 report.

In a September 3, 2026 report, Axios described Anthropic as recording the full value of Claude sales through cloud partners and the providers’ cuts as expenses, while describing OpenAI as treating partner sales differently. The report also cautioned that accounting did not explain the full reported revenue gap. This identifies a reconciliation question, but does not establish a definitive apples-to-apples result or show that either treatment is improper. The cited material does not provide the companies’ audited statements and full accounting-policy notes needed to verify the analysis. See Axios’s September 3 report.

Revenue measures sales recognized under the applicable accounting basis; it does not establish profitability or cash generation. Where comparable disclosures exist, examine cost of revenue, operating expenses, operating income, and cash flow alongside it. Do not infer profit, cash burn, or cash generation from a revenue figure alone. Microsoft’s FY2026 release and filing show how to consult reported results and accounting context in primary sources, but they do not make a private company’s annualized estimate directly comparable to a fiscal-year result.

A practical comparison checklist
- Capture the claim: record the speaker, source, publication date, exact metric label, currency, period, and stated scope.
- Find the closest primary record: for a public company, check the relevant annual or quarterly filing and earnings release. For a private company, label investor figures and media reports as such unless an audited statement or company filing supports a stronger description.
- Align the basis: reconcile fiscal versus calendar periods, duration, geography, currency, and business scope. Mark a point-in-time run rate as different from revenue recognized over a completed period.
- Read the definition and accounting policy: check how the issuer defines ARR or other non-GAAP measures and how it accounts for partner transactions.
- Separate top line from financial health: compare relevant costs and cash-flow measures where available, and do not use revenue alone to claim profitability.
- State what cannot be reconciled: if the sources do not establish comparable definitions, periods, or partner treatment, report that limitation instead of manufacturing an adjusted figure.
