Compare recognized revenue first, then treat ARR and annualized run rate as separate supplemental measures. Revenue covers a defined accounting period under the company’s revenue-recognition policy. ARR usually describes a point-in-time contract base, while annualized run rate extrapolates a recent sales interval. The labels are not interchangeable: two AI companies can publish the same-looking “ARR” or “annualized revenue” number while counting different contracts, usage, partners, and accounting shares.
Start with recognized revenue
Recognized revenue is the only figure in this comparison that is inherently tied to an accounting period and a formal revenue-recognition framework. Under ASC 606, the Financial Accounting Standards Board says the objective is to report useful information about the nature, timing, and uncertainty of revenue from customer contracts. In practice, revenue is recorded as promised goods or services are transferred and the company satisfies the applicable performance obligations.

That means a quarterly revenue figure describes what the company recognized during that quarter. It is not the same as taking the latest month of bookings and multiplying by 12, and it is not necessarily the value of every contract signed during the period. Timing of implementation, usage, acceptance, renewals, refunds, variable consideration, and the company’s principal-versus-agent assessment can all affect the amount recognized.

Understand what ARR and annualized run rate actually measure
Revenue
Revenue is a backward-looking period measure. A statement such as “$120 million of revenue in the year ended December 31” tells you what was recognized over that year under the company’s accounting policies. It can include subscriptions, usage or API consumption, support, professional services, hardware, and other items, depending on the business.
Revenue can rise even when the recurring contract base is flat—for example, because of a one-time services project or an unusually large usage event. Conversely, a growing contract base may not appear fully in current-period revenue if customers have not started service or if contracts are recognized over time.
Annual recurring revenue (ARR)
ARR generally attempts to express the yearly value of a recurring contract base at a particular date. There is no universal GAAP definition or standardized calculation. One SEC-filed company defines ARR from active, contractually binding term contracts and annualizes each contract by dividing its value by the number of contract months and multiplying by 12. Its filing explicitly says ARR is not defined in GAAP, is not derived from a GAAP measure, and should be viewed independently of revenue.
Another public company labels its measure “Annual Run Rate” and bases it on active contract value calculated from contract duration. It excludes future committed increases and does not assume renewals. Amplitude’s SEC filing defines ARR around subscription agreements at a point in time, includes specified contracted premium services, and says the metric is neither annualized U.S. GAAP revenue nor a forecast. These examples use the same familiar label for materially different populations of contracts.
When reading ARR, ask whether the numerator is total contract value, remaining contract value, monthly recurring charges, or the company’s retained share. Also check whether the company includes usage commitments, support, hosting, services, short-term subscriptions, contracts that have been signed but not started, and customers with cancellation rights.
Annualized run rate
Annualized run rate usually starts with revenue from a short interval and scales it to a 12-month equivalent. The basic formula is:

Annualized run rate = revenue recognized during the chosen interval × (12 ÷ interval length in months)

A company that recognized $10 million in one month might describe a $120 million annualized pace. That arithmetic does not establish that the company will recognize $120 million over the next year. The result is highly sensitive to the selected month or quarter, seasonality, a large temporary customer, a launch, a pricing change, or an unusual usage spike.
Some companies use “annualized revenue,” “revenue run rate,” or “exit-rate revenue” for this kind of extrapolation. Others use “run rate” to mean an ARR-like contract measure. Never infer the formula from the label alone; quote the company’s definition and calculation.
Side-by-side differences
| Measure | What it represents | Time basis | Typical inputs | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recognized revenue | Revenue recorded under the company’s accounting policy | Completed reporting period | Performance obligations satisfied, transaction price, principal/agent treatment | May include one-time, usage, or services revenue and may lag signed contracts |
| ARR | Annualized value of a defined recurring contract base | Point in time, usually period end | Active contracts, contract value or recurring charges, stated inclusion rules | No standardized formula; may omit usage, renewals, future increases, or unstarted contracts |
| Annualized run rate | Recent revenue pace projected to a year | Short historical interval | Monthly, quarterly, or trailing-period revenue multiplied by an annualization factor | Assumes the selected pace persists and can be distorted by seasonality or temporary events |
A repeatable method for comparing two AI companies
1. Record the exact metric label
Copy the wording used by the company: “revenue,” “ARR,” “annual recurring revenue,” “annualized revenue,” “revenue run rate,” or another term. Put the label in quotation marks in your notes and do not silently rename it. A company’s own definition determines what the number can support.
2. Fix the measurement date and underlying period
For revenue, record the fiscal quarter or year and the end date. For ARR, record the point-in-time date, such as the last day of the quarter. For a run rate, record the source interval—one month, a quarter, a trailing 12-month period, or quarter-to-date. Numbers measured on different dates should not be compared without an explicit bridge.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

For ARR, identify whether the company annualizes each contract, sums monthly recurring charges, or uses another method. For a run rate, show the multiplication factor. A quarterly figure annualized by multiplying by four is not equivalent to a last-month figure multiplied by 12 when the business is seasonal or growing rapidly.

4. Map the revenue composition
Separate recurring subscriptions from metered API or inference usage, support, hosting, professional services, hardware, advertising, and one-time licenses. AI vendors often have a mix of fixed subscriptions and consumption pricing. A usage-heavy company’s ARR may exclude future consumption, while its recognized revenue can jump when customers run unusually large workloads.
5. Test contract quality
Determine whether the metric includes only active contracts or also signed-but-not-started agreements. Check minimum commitments, cancellation and termination rights, ramp schedules, discounts, credits, refunds, and whether renewals are assumed. A contract with a non-cancellable minimum is not economically identical to a month-to-month plan, even if both are shown as annualized values.
6. Check future increases and renewals
Some definitions exclude scheduled price increases or expansion that has been contractually committed but not yet started. Others may include only the current committed amount. A company that does not assume renewals will produce a more conservative ARR than one that models expected renewals; the two figures need a clear qualification before comparison.

For cloud marketplaces, resellers, and other distributors, determine whether the reported amount is gross transaction value or the vendor’s net share after the intermediary’s fee. Also determine whether the company is acting as principal or agent for the promised service. Do not add a partner’s reported sales to the vendor’s revenue unless the accounting policy supports doing so.
8. Grade the evidence
Mark whether the figure comes from audited financial statements, an SEC filing, a company earnings release, an executive interview, or secondary reporting. Historical revenue in a filing and a media-reported private-company run rate are different evidence classes. Keep them in separate columns in any comparison.
9. Normalize only when the disclosures permit it
You can calculate a comparable annualized figure only when the periods, populations, formulas, currency, and partner treatment are sufficiently clear. If a company does not disclose the necessary inputs, present the figures side by side with their definitions and identify the mismatch instead of manufacturing an adjustment.

Worked example: why headline numbers can mislead
The following is an illustrative calculation, not a claim about any named company. It shows how three apparently similar figures can describe different things.
| Company | Published figure | Underlying basis | What a careful comparison says |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | $100 million ARR | Active, non-cancellable 12-month subscription contracts at June 30; usage excluded | A point-in-time recurring contract value, not six months of recognized revenue |
| B | $100 million annualized revenue | $25 million recognized in the latest quarter multiplied by four | A pace extrapolation that may include usage and services; persistence is unproven |
| C | $100 million revenue | Revenue recognized during the fiscal year ended June 30 | A completed accounting-period measure that may include recurring and non-recurring items |
These amounts should not be ranked as if they were equivalent. Company A could recognize substantially less than $100 million over the next 12 months if customers delay implementation or usage is low. Company B could finish below or above its annualized figure if the quarter contained a temporary spike. Company C has the strongest historical accounting basis, but its total may not reveal the size of its current contract pipeline.
How cloud-partner sales affect AI revenue comparisons
AI companies increasingly distribute models and applications through cloud marketplaces and other partners. Public reporting has highlighted differences in how companies account for those sales: one vendor may report the gross amount billed to the customer, while another may report only the amount retained after the partner’s share. A partner may also bundle the AI service with infrastructure or support, making the promised service and principal-versus-agent assessment important.
This is a comparability issue, not proof that one company’s accounting is wrong. The available coverage identifies a live reporting difference but is not a substitute for each company’s filing and accounting policy. For every partner channel, look for:
- Whether the company is principal or agent for the specified service.
- Whether the disclosed amount is gross billings, net revenue, or a non-GAAP booking measure.
- The partner fee, credits, refunds, and usage settlement terms.
- Whether partner-sourced contracts are included in ARR and under what definition.
- Whether the company reports marketplace consumption separately from direct sales.
If those details are missing, label the figures “not directly comparable” rather than applying a guessed gross-up or net-down percentage.

Comparing growth without mixing metrics
Growth rates are meaningful only when the numerator and denominator use the same definition. Compare fiscal-year revenue with prior-year fiscal revenue, or quarter-end ARR with prior-year quarter-end ARR. Do not compare a company’s quarterly revenue growth with another company’s ARR growth and call the result a relative growth ranking.
Best Value
For a like-for-like rate, use:
Growth rate = (current metric − comparable prior metric) ÷ comparable prior metric × 100
Then explain the bridge. Revenue growth may reflect new customers, expansion, price changes, usage, acquisitions, foreign-exchange movements, or a change in partner presentation. ARR growth may reflect new bookings, churn, downsell, contract duration, or a revised definition. A restated series is preferable; if a definition changed, show the break and avoid a single uninterrupted trend line.
Private-company AI figures require extra caution
Private companies often publicize milestones such as “$1 billion annualized revenue” without publishing audited statements or a detailed formula. Treat that as a company-attributed snapshot unless the underlying period, recognized revenue, contract population, and accounting treatment are disclosed. It may be based on one month of usage, a large customer launch, bookings, or a run rate calculated before partner deductions.
No standardized cross-company AI revenue or ARR benchmark has been established by the available filings. SEC disclosures provide company-specific policies, not a common industry series. A chart that places a private-company annualized figure beside a public company’s audited annual revenue should use distinct labels, evidence notes, and dates.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
- Calling ARR annual revenue: Fix it by describing ARR as the company-defined recurring contract metric and showing its date.
- Assuming “run rate” means ARR: Fix it by reproducing the stated interval and annualization formula.
- Adding bookings to revenue: Fix it by separating signed contract value, billings, bookings, ARR, and recognized revenue.
- Assuming all usage recurs: Fix it by identifying minimum commitments and excluding or separately flagging discretionary consumption.
- Ignoring contract starts: Fix it by checking whether signed-but-not-started contracts enter the metric.
- Assuming renewals: Fix it by noting whether the definition includes only current terms or expected renewals.
- Grossing up partner sales without evidence: Fix it by documenting principal-versus-agent treatment and retained share.
- Comparing different currencies or fiscal calendars: Fix it by stating the currency, conversion date or rate, and fiscal-period boundaries.
- Treating a media report as audited data: Fix it by labeling the source and preserving the company’s exact wording.
- Ranking companies by one headline number: Fix it by presenting a metric panel with definitions, dates, composition, and evidence quality.

When a normalized comparison is defensible
A normalized comparison is reasonable when both companies disclose the same type of metric, use comparable dates, define the included contracts or revenue streams, and explain partner treatment. Convert currencies consistently, align fiscal periods, and show every adjustment. Preserve the original figures beside the normalized result so readers can audit the calculation.
Do not normalize when one figure is recognized revenue and the other is an ARR-like contract value, when one company includes usage and the other excludes it, or when gross-versus-net partner treatment is unknown. In those cases, the honest conclusion is qualitative: the metrics indicate scale or momentum in different dimensions, but they do not establish an apples-to-apples ranking.

What the numbers can and cannot tell you
Recognized revenue is best for measuring realized business over a defined accounting period. ARR can help describe the current recurring contract base when its inclusion rules are transparent. Annualized run rate can communicate recent momentum, but it is a scenario based on a selected historical pace rather than a promise of future revenue.
None of the three, by itself, explains profitability, cash collection, customer concentration, gross margin, infrastructure costs, churn, or the durability of AI usage. Pair the metric with the company’s definition, date, contract terms, revenue mix, and evidence source before drawing conclusions about scale or trajectory.
