If you want an action RPG with good exploration, combat, and story, compare those qualities separately before choosing a game. The best fit depends on which matters most to you—and what trade-offs you are willing to accept. Combat can demand careful timing, exploration can leave discoveries to you, and a strong story can be delivered directly or pieced together from clues.
Start by ranking the three things you care about
Put combat, exploration, and story in priority order. Then decide what kind of experience you want within each category: demanding or forgiving fights, guided objectives or open-ended discovery, and a clearly presented plot or one you interpret as you play. A broad label such as “best RPG” cannot tell you whether a game matches those preferences.

There is no common published score that measures these three qualities across the example games here. Treat reviews as qualitative descriptions, not as a controlled head-to-head ranking or a composite score.
Compare combat by what you do in a fight
Look beyond words such as “fast” or “deep.” Ask what actions recur, how much timing and positioning matter, whether abilities or builds change your options, and how costly mistakes feel.

Elden Ring
GameSpot describes Elden Ring’s combat as measured and says enemies punish careless play. That points to a style where patience and attention matter; it does not establish a numerical difficulty rating or say that every player will find it difficult. Read GameSpot’s Elden Ring review.
Dragon’s Dogma 2
PlayStation describes vocation-specific combat and says enemies learn the player’s tactics and react. Its official page calls the game a “single-player, narrative-driven action-RPG.” The statement about enemies learning tricks is promotional feature language, not an independent comparative judgment of combat quality. See PlayStation’s Dragon’s Dogma 2 page.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
PC Gamer’s review of the 2015 release describes real-time combat involving attacks, effects and buffs, evasion, and sign abilities. This is an editorial description of that release, not a current technical assessment of every later edition. Read PC Gamer’s The Witcher 3 review.

A large map is not automatically rewarding to explore. Consider how much the game guides you, whether wandering and observation lead to meaningful discoveries, and whether you enjoy finding things without being directed straight to them.
Rank #3
GameSpot describes Elden Ring as offering greater freedom to explore, with discovery at the center of its design. That is a useful fit signal if you enjoy working out where to go and what to investigate, but it is a review judgment rather than a common exploration score. GameSpot’s review discusses Elden Ring’s exploration.
Compare story delivery, not just story appeal
Ask how the narrative reaches you. Some players want plot and character developments delivered through direct scenes and quests; others enjoy assembling meaning from fragments and discoveries. A game’s premise alone will not tell you which approach it uses.

If you want a story to piece together
GameSpot says Elden Ring presents its story in fragments for players to put together. That suits readers who enjoy interpretation and are comfortable with less direct delivery; it may be a poor fit if you want the main plot explained clearly as you go. Read the review’s discussion of Elden Ring’s story.
If narrative is a prominent draw
PC Gamer characterizes The Witcher 3 as narrative-driven. That description can help identify it for someone who puts story high on the list, but it does not establish that every player will prefer its storytelling or that its narrative is delivered in one particular way. Read PC Gamer’s review.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a preference checklist before you buy
- Rank your priorities: Put combat, exploration, and story in order from most to least important.
- Name the version of each quality you want: For example, careful and punishing combat, discovery with limited guidance, or a plot presented directly.
- Check reviews for evidence: Look for descriptions of actual play and story delivery rather than relying on a genre label or a single overall score.
- Choose the trade-off you can live with: A game may be a strong match on your top priority without matching your preferences on all three.
- Verify the purchase listing: Confirm the platform, edition, region, and current retailer listing before buying. Named games can have platform-specific editions, and the descriptions here do not establish current stock or price.
What these examples can—and cannot—tell you
Bandai Namco’s catalogue identifies Elden Ring and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as action RPGs and connects the genre experience with skills, exploration, and story. That supports their relevance as examples, but it is not a side-by-side evaluation. Browse Bandai Namco’s game catalogue.
The descriptions above come from official product pages and editorial reviews published at different times. They offer useful clues about features and design, but they do not use a shared method for scoring combat, exploration, or story. No directly comparable statistic across these games is established here, so percentages, play-hour comparisons, and an overall numerical winner would be misleading.
