Compare the same stablecoin in the same Aave reserve, on the same network, at the same time. Record its supply APY, variable borrow APY, utilization, available liquidity, caps, reserve status, incentives and transaction costs. A displayed APY is a moving snapshot—not a promised return—and subtracting borrow APY from supply APY is not enough to prove a strategy is profitable.
What you are actually comparing
Aave supplies two different numbers for a reserve: the interest paid to suppliers and the interest charged to borrowers. Both are variable market rates, but they are not interchangeable. A supplier earns the reserve’s supply rate on deposited tokens. A borrower pays the reserve’s variable borrow rate on debt, subject to the market’s rate model and any applicable risk parameters.

If you are only depositing stablecoins, the borrow APY is not a personal bill. It is context: it shows demand for borrowing that reserve and helps explain why the supply rate is where it is. You incur a borrowing cost only when you open debt. If you plan to borrow against collateral, the comparison becomes a financing calculation and must include collateral, liquidation and repayment risks.
A useful first-pass calculation is:
Indicative carry = supply APY − variable borrow APY − transaction costs − other strategy costs

That equation is only a screening tool. It is meaningful only when both rates describe the same asset, reserve, network, market and observation time. Rates can change while your position is open, and incentives are not automatically part of base interest.
Why Aave rates move
Utilization drives the rate curve
Utilization is the share of a reserve that is currently borrowed. When more of the pool is borrowed, less liquidity remains available for withdrawals and the protocol generally raises borrowing and supply rates. Aave’s version 3 rate model has an optimal utilization point. Below that point, rates change more gradually; above it, the curve becomes considerably steeper to encourage repayment and new deposits.
The supply rate is funded by borrower interest after the reserve factor is taken out. Governance-set parameters, utilization and reserve configuration therefore affect what suppliers receive. A low utilization reading can mean abundant exit liquidity but a modest supply rate. A high reading can produce a more attractive rate while making withdrawals and further borrowing more difficult.

The same underlying stablecoin can have different parameters in different Aave markets or on different networks. Risk settings, caps, borrowing availability, reserve factors and incentives are market-specific. A protocol-wide headline rate is not a substitute for the reserve page that you will actually use.
The snapshot to take before depositing
Save a dated record before you approve a token or send a supply transaction. A screenshot or written note is useful because rates and liquidity can change before your transaction confirms.
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Network | Exact chain selected in the Aave interface | Every chain has separate liquidity, rates, fees and risk conditions. |
| Market and reserve | Aave market/version, stablecoin symbol, contract or asset identity | Identical symbols can represent different deployments; reserve parameters are not universal. |
| Supply APY | Current base supply rate displayed for that reserve | This is the variable interest rate before separately stated rewards. |
| Variable borrow APY | Current variable rate for the same reserve | It is a demand signal for a supplier and a financing cost for a borrower. |
| Utilization | Current percentage borrowed | Explains rate pressure and helps assess withdrawal liquidity. |
| Available liquidity | Unborrowed amount currently available to withdraw | A high APY does not guarantee that your full deposit can be withdrawn immediately. |
| Caps and status | Supply cap, borrow cap, whether supply and borrowing are enabled, and remaining capacity | A nearly reached cap can prevent a new deposit or change the practical risk of the position. |
| Incentives | Reward token or points, eligibility, rate presentation and stated end date | Rewards are conditional and can stop; they are not the same as base interest. |
| Costs | Approval and supply network fees, expected withdrawal fee and any swap cost | Small deposits or short holding periods can be dominated by transaction costs. |
| Timestamp | Date and time, including your time zone | Rates are snapshots. A later comparison must not be presented as the earlier rate. |
Check whether the interface labels a rate as variable, stable or incentive-based. Do not combine unlike figures—for example, a variable supply APY with an App vault’s stable indicative rate—and call the result a spread.

Step-by-step comparison in the Aave market interface
- Select the network and market. Connect the wallet you intend to use, choose the exact chain and open the relevant Aave market. Do not rely on a rate seen on another network or in a different market.
- Open the stablecoin reserve. Verify the token symbol and asset identity. If the interface exposes a token address or reserve details, compare that identity with the asset you hold before approving a transaction.
- Read the supply APY. Record the displayed base rate and whether it includes a separate reward component. Treat the number as valid only at the recorded time.
- Read the variable borrow APY. Record it from the same reserve page. If you are not borrowing, classify it as market context rather than your own expense.
- Inspect utilization and liquidity. Note both the percentage utilized and the unborrowed amount. Compare available liquidity with the amount you would deposit and the amount you may need to withdraw.
- Check caps and reserve status. Confirm that supplying is enabled, the supply cap has room, and no borrowing or isolation setting changes the assumptions behind the rate.
- Separate base yield from incentives. Write the base APY and each reward token or points program in different lines. Record eligibility rules and an end date only when the interface or official terms state them.
- Estimate the holding-period result. For an intended period, multiply the principal by the annualized rate and the fraction of the year you expect to remain supplied. Use a range rather than treating today’s APY as fixed.
- Subtract entry and exit costs. Include token approval, supply and withdrawal transaction fees, plus any swap fee needed to acquire or dispose of the stablecoin. On a congested network, fees can be materially different from the estimate shown when you begin.
- Recheck immediately before signing. A rate, cap or liquidity value can move between your initial review and transaction confirmation. Save the final values with the transaction date.
How to estimate the result without overstating it
Use scenarios, not a single APY promise
Annual percentage yield is an annualized display, not a commitment that you will receive that percentage. Build at least three cases: a lower-rate case, the current snapshot and a higher-rate case. Change the assumed utilization and holding period in each case. The result should show gross interest, incentives as a separate line, one-time costs and the resulting net amount.

|---|---|---|
| Gross supply interest | Principal × assumed supply rate × time held | Assumes the rate remains near the selected scenario; actual rates can change continuously. |
| Borrow interest, if applicable | Debt × assumed variable borrow rate × time outstanding | Applies only to borrowed funds and can rise sharply as utilization exceeds the optimal point. |
| Rewards | Separately estimate the stated reward rate or expected token amount | Eligibility, token price, program duration and payment rules can change. |
| Network and swap costs | Approval, supply, withdrawal and exchange fees | Use the actual network and transaction path; do not assume a zero-cost entry or exit. |
| Net result | Gross interest + realized rewards − borrow interest − costs | This is an estimate, not a guaranteed return or a risk-adjusted profit measure. |
Account for the compounding convention
Interfaces may display APY, which generally reflects a compounding assumption, while your own calculation may use a simple annual rate. Use the same convention throughout. If you withdraw or reinvest periodically, include the extra transactions and do not assume compounding is free.
Consider position size
Fixed transaction costs have a larger percentage effect on a small deposit. For example, a fee that is immaterial on a large, long-term position can consume much of the expected interest on a small position held for only a few days. Calculate costs in the deposit’s own currency and as a percentage of principal.
Liquidity: why a high rate may not be an easy exit
Supplying makes your tokens available to borrowers. You can withdraw only from the reserve’s unborrowed liquidity, subject to the protocol’s current status and any market restrictions. A reserve can display an attractive supply APY while having little immediately available liquidity.
Before supplying, compare available liquidity with your planned withdrawal amount. Leave a margin rather than assuming the displayed amount will remain unchanged. A sudden increase in borrowing can reduce the amount available to withdraw and push utilization into the steep portion of the rate curve. If you need a guaranteed cash date, a variable-rate lending reserve is not equivalent to a bank deposit or a fixed-term instrument.

Direct reserve supply versus the Aave App
Do not mix the direct market interface with the separate Aave App vault product. The App disclosures, updated July 12, 2026, describe a user-facing stable rate drawn from vault allocation and influenced by underlying variable markets. They state: “The rate you see in the App is a stable rate drawn from the vault’s allocation and influenced by the underlying variable markets. It is not guaranteed by any person, entity or actor.”

The disclosure also says the App rate can be lower than shown or zero, may differ materially from past performance, and can involve a yield spread accruing as fees to the Aave DAO treasury. Network and transaction charges, including gas and swap fees, may also apply. Those statements describe the App/vault product; they should not be generalized to every direct reserve supply position.

When borrowing is part of the strategy
Borrowing cost is only one part of the trade
If you borrow stablecoins against collateral, compare the variable borrow APY with the expected use of the borrowed funds. Include collateral financing, repayment timing, transaction costs and the possibility that the borrow rate rises. A positive difference between a supply rate and a borrow rate does not remove exposure to rate changes or collateral loss.
Monitor the health factor
Aave’s health factor summarizes the relationship between collateral value, debt value and liquidation parameters. A position with a health factor below 1 is eligible for liquidation. Withdrawing collateral, increasing debt, a fall in collateral price or a rise in debt value can reduce the health factor. Liquidation can sell collateral and add penalties or other costs, so it is a separate risk assessment from the yield comparison.
- Record the collateral asset and its liquidation threshold.
- Record the starting health factor and the debt amount.
- Model adverse collateral-price moves and a higher borrow rate.
- Keep a repayment or collateral top-up plan rather than relying on a favorable current spread.
- Do not withdraw collateral merely because the supply-versus-borrow arithmetic looks positive.
Risks that the APY comparison leaves out
Rate risk
Utilization, reserve parameters and governance decisions can change the supply and borrow rates. A current display is a snapshot, not a fixed coupon.
Liquidity risk
Withdrawals depend on unborrowed reserve liquidity. Caps, pauses or changing market conditions can restrict the practical ability to exit.
Smart-contract and operational risk
Supplying places assets into protocol contracts and requires wallet transactions. Risk controls, reviews or audits do not make a position risk-free. Protect the wallet, verify transaction details and use the intended network before signing.

Stablecoin risk
The stablecoin’s peg, issuer or underlying mechanism introduces risks separate from Aave’s rate model. Do not assume that two stablecoins with similar symbols have equivalent solvency, redemption or depeg characteristics.
Incentive risk
Reward tokens and points are separate from base interest. Programs can end, change eligibility or lose market value. Present them as conditional upside, not guaranteed APY.
Cost risk
Approval, supply, withdrawal and swap transactions require fees. A strategy that looks profitable before costs can be negative after entering and exiting, especially over a short period.
A practical decision checklist
- Is this the exact stablecoin reserve, market and network you intend to use?
- Did you record supply APY, variable borrow APY, utilization and available liquidity at a specific time?
- Are supply and borrowing enabled, and do the caps have enough remaining capacity?
- Did you separate base APY from each incentive and verify its eligibility and stated end date?
- Did you estimate more than one rate scenario for the full holding period?
- Did you include approval, entry, exit, network and swap costs?
- If borrowing is involved, did you record collateral, liquidation threshold, health factor and a stress case?
- Can you tolerate a lower rate, reduced liquidity or a stablecoin depeg?
- Are you comparing a direct reserve position with the direct reserve’s figures, rather than mixing in the separate App/vault rate?
Bottom line: what makes the comparison valid
A valid Aave comparison is a dated, reserve-specific calculation—not a protocol-wide headline and not simply “supply APY minus borrow APY.” Match the asset, chain and market first; then inspect utilization, liquidity, caps, status, incentives and costs. Treat rewards separately, model changing rates, and evaluate collateral and liquidation risk whenever debt is involved. If you cannot explain how you would withdraw under a high-utilization scenario, the displayed yield is incomplete information rather than a decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
If I only supply stablecoins, do I pay the variable borrow APY?
No. The variable borrow APY is your personal financing cost only if you open debt. For a supplier who does not borrow, it is a signal of demand and utilization in that reserve.
Can I add Aave incentives to the displayed supply APY?
Record incentives separately. Rewards or points may have eligibility conditions, changing token value or an end date, so they should not be presented as guaranteed base APY.
Why might I be unable to withdraw even when my balance shows a yield?
Withdrawals depend on unborrowed liquidity in the exact reserve. Heavy borrowing, caps, pauses or other market restrictions can reduce immediately available liquidity.
What happens if my borrowing position’s health factor falls below 1?
The position becomes eligible for liquidation. Collateral can be sold under the protocol’s liquidation rules, so monitor the health factor and keep a repayment or collateral top-up plan.
