How to Compare a Stock’s Price Return With Its Total Return

Price return measures only the change in a stock’s quoted share price. Total return adds investment income, such as dividends, and may assume those dividends were reinvested. To compare the two fairly, use the same security, start date, end date, currency and price observations, then confirm whether each figure is before or after fees and taxes and whether distributions are paid in cash or reinvested.

For a simple holding with no other cash flows, calculate price return as (ending price − starting price) ÷ starting price × 100. Add per-share dividends to the numerator for a cash-dividend total return. Published index and fund series often use a reinvestment convention, so their total-return figure can differ from the result in an individual brokerage account.

What price return and total return each measure

Price return isolates the share-price change

Price return answers one narrow question: how much did the quoted price move between two observations? It excludes dividends and other investment income. If a share rises from $30 to $35, the price gain is $5 per share. Relative to the $30 starting price, that is a 16.7% price return before expenses.

This measure is useful when you want to study the market-price component alone, or when comparing a price index with another price index. It is not the complete economic result for a shareholder who also received dividends during the period. A price-only chart can therefore understate the value created by an income-paying stock.

Total return adds investment income

Total return combines the change in value with investment earnings. FINRA summarizes the concept as “Total return = Gain or loss in value + Investment earnings” in its investor-education material (FINRA, “Key Concepts: Return and Rate of Return”).

For a stock, the usual investment income is a cash dividend. A total-return series can either treat that dividend as cash received or model it as being reinvested in additional shares. Those are different conventions, especially when a stock pays several dividends or its price changes sharply between payment dates.

The distinction is about measurement, not a promise that total return will be positive. Income can narrow a loss, but it cannot necessarily offset a large decline in the quoted price. Conversely, a stock with a flat price can have a positive total return if it distributes income.

The two core calculations

Simple price return

For one purchase and one sale, with no additional purchases, sales or distributions, use:

Price return (%) = (Ending share price − Starting share price) ÷ Starting share price × 100

A result above zero means the quoted price increased. A result below zero means it fell. The percentage is measured against the starting price, not the ending price. Keep the prices on the same basis, such as both closing prices or both official index observations.

Dividend-inclusive total return with dividends kept as cash

If the holding produced dividends and you did not reinvest them, use:

This is a simple holding-period calculation. It assumes the dividend amount is stated per original share and that there are no other cash flows, fees, taxes or withholding adjustments. If there were several payments, add the per-share amounts attributable to that original share.

Total return when dividends are reinvested

With reinvestment, the dividend buys additional shares at the applicable reinvestment price and those extra shares can generate later dividends. The exact result therefore depends on the payment dates, reinvestment prices and treatment of fractional shares. A published total-return index normally specifies its own reinvestment rules; do not substitute the cash-dividend formula without checking that methodology.

Reinvestment also changes the meaning of “per share.” After the first distribution, the investor may own more than the original number of shares. A later dividend may be calculated on that larger position, so simply adding all cash distributions to the original price change can understate a genuinely reinvested result.

FINRA’s $30-to-$35 example, calculated both ways

FINRA’s illustration says an investor buys at $30 a share and sells at $35. The return is $5 per share before commissions and other fees. If the stock paid a $1-per-share dividend while it was owned, the total return is a $6-per-share gain before expenses (FINRA’s example).

Item Amount per share Calculation
Starting price $30 Purchase price
Ending price $35 Sale price
Price gain $5 $35 − $30
Dividend received $1 Cash dividend during ownership
Total gain before expenses $6 $5 price gain + $1 dividend
Price return 16.7% $5 ÷ $30 × 100
Dividend-inclusive total return 20.0% $6 ÷ $30 × 100

The 16.7% and 20.0% percentages are arithmetic results from FINRA’s stated example, not statistics about the market. They assume no dividend reinvestment, commission, tax, withholding, or other cash flow. If the dividend had been reinvested, the result would require the reinvestment date and price.

A step-by-step method for comparing reported figures

  1. Identify the exact security. Confirm that both figures refer to the same company share class, fund, or index. A company’s price series and a broad-market total-return index are not interchangeable.
  2. Set identical start and end dates. Record the dates and the precise price observations used. A period ending on a dividend’s ex-date, payment date or a trading holiday can produce a different result from a period ending on the next available market close.
  3. Record the currency and measurement basis. Compare dollar figures with dollar figures, or convert both series using the same stated currency convention. Do not mix a local-currency share return with a currency-converted index return.
  4. Classify each number as price-only or total return. Look for labels such as “price return,” “price index,” “gross total return” or “net total return.” If the publisher does not define the label, treat the comparison as unresolved until its methodology is available.
  5. Determine how dividends or distributions are handled. Establish whether they are excluded, added as cash, or reinvested. Also check whether ordinary and special dividends receive different treatment.
  6. Check the expense basis. Note whether the numbers are before or after commissions, fund expenses, taxes and withholding. A quoted index return is generally a methodology result, not a statement of what landed in your account.
  7. Recalculate on one common basis. Use the formulas above for a simple cash-dividend comparison, or follow the series provider’s documented reinvestment method for a total-return index.
  8. Explain the difference in percentage points. Subtract price return from total return after confirming that both percentages use the same period and basis. Attribute the gap to income and convention, not automatically to superior share-price performance.

Dividend dates can change the comparison

Dividend terminology matters because the market price and the investor’s cash receipt do not occur at the same moment. A data series may apply an ordinary dividend on the ex-dividend date, while a brokerage account may show the cash on the later payment date. If your start or end observation is close to either date, document which observation you used.

A stock can also make a special distribution. The amount, date and price adjustment may be handled differently from an ordinary recurring dividend. Do not assume that every distribution shown in a transaction history belongs in the same simple dividend column. Check whether the benchmark methodology treats the payment as income, an adjustment to the index divisor, or another corporate-action event.

Why reinvestment conventions matter

Two total-return numbers can both be correctly calculated yet differ because one pays dividends out as cash while the other compounds them through reinvestment. Reinvestment also requires a timing rule. A series may reinvest on the dividend’s ex-dividend date, payment date or another specified date, and it may include fractional units.

The longer the period and the higher the dividend yield, the more the convention can affect the result. A one-time dividend added as cash does not earn a return afterward; reinvested dividends remain invested and can themselves contribute to later gains or losses. Reinvestment can help or hurt the measured result depending on what happens to the share price after each distribution.

When reading a fund, benchmark or data vendor, find the methodology document and look for the words “reinvested,” “gross,” “net,” “distribution,” “ex-dividend” and “withholding.” If no convention is stated, report the ambiguity instead of presenting the number as directly comparable.

How the S&P 500 illustrates the distinction

An SEC-hosted filing describing the S&P 500 methodology states that the price index reflects stock-price changes, while the total-return index reflects price movements plus reinvested dividend income (“Background on the S&P 500 Total Return Index,” SEC-hosted 2026 filing).

That methodology applies ordinary cash dividends on the ex-dividend date and describes adjustments for special dividends. These rules make the index internally consistent, but they do not prescribe what every investor experiences. Your account may receive cash on a different date, reinvest only if you selected that option, or lose part of the distribution to taxes and transaction costs.

Use an index’s price and total-return versions as a matched pair only after confirming that they share the same constituent universe, date range, currency and calculation frequency. Comparing a stock’s own price return with the S&P 500’s total return would mix both security and return definitions.

Fees, taxes and other cash flows

Trading costs

Commissions, bid-ask spreads and other transaction charges reduce the amount you actually keep. FINRA’s example explicitly subtracts commissions and other fees from the investor’s return. A published pre-expense percentage therefore can exceed your realized result even when the underlying price and dividend data are correct.

Taxes and withholding

Dividend taxes and withholding depend on the investor, account type and jurisdiction. A gross total-return series can assume the full dividend is reinvested, while an investor may reinvest only the after-tax amount. State the tax basis whenever you compare a personal result with a published series.

Additional purchases, sales and withdrawals

The simple formulas assume one initial investment and one final value. If you add money, sell part of the position, receive a special distribution, or withdraw cash, use a cash-flow-aware return method rather than inserting those amounts into the basic dividend formula. Keep deposits and withdrawals separate from investment gains so that your return is not mistaken for account growth.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Using mismatched dates: Comparing a calendar-year price return with a total return that starts or ends on a different trading day can create a false gap.
  • Mixing currencies: A local-currency stock result and a currency-converted benchmark include different exchange-rate effects.
  • Comparing gross with net: A total-return index may include the full distribution, while a personal account reflects withholding or expenses.
  • Counting distributions twice: Do not add a dividend to a series that already reinvests it.
  • Ignoring partial ownership: A formula based on one share must be scaled consistently when the investor owns fractional shares or a changing number of shares.
  • Calling the gap alpha: The difference between price and total return is normally income and compounding, not evidence of management skill or superior price selection.

Interpreting common outcomes

Price return is positive and total return is higher

This is the ordinary dividend-paying case: the share price rose and income added to the result. The size of the gap reflects the dividend amount and, for a reinvested series, the compounding created by earlier distributions.

Price return is negative but total return is still positive

Income can outweigh a modest price decline. For example, a $10 starting price, $9.60 ending price and $0.70 dividend produce a $0.30 gain on the original investment, or a 3.0% cash-dividend total return, even though the price return is −4.0%.

Both returns are negative

A dividend does not guarantee a profit. If the price falls by more than the income received, total return remains below zero. FINRA cautions that market-linked investments can lose value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reported total return is lower than your cash-dividend calculation

Check whether the published figure is net of withholding or fund expenses, whether its ending date differs, and whether it includes a price adjustment or special-dividend rule. Also verify that you did not compare a reinvested series with a personal calculation that assumes dividends stayed in cash.

Worked comparison with a price decline

Suppose one share costs $50 at the start, ends at $46, and pays $3 in cash dividends. The price return is ($46 − $50) ÷ $50 × 100 = −8.0%. The dividend-inclusive total return is ($46 − $50 + $3) ÷ $50 × 100 = −2.0%. Income softened the loss but did not erase it.

If the $3 had been reinvested, the final value would include the original share, the additional fractional shares purchased with the dividend and any change in those shares’ value. You would need the reinvestment price and date to calculate that result precisely.

Implementing the comparison in a spreadsheet

For a single-share, cash-dividend example, place the starting price in cell B2, ending price in B3 and dividends per share in B4. Use:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • =(B3-B2)/B2 for price return.
  • =(B3-B2+B4)/B2 for cash-dividend total return.
  • Format both cells as percentages and retain the underlying decimal precision.

Add separate columns for date, currency, dividend treatment, fees and taxes. This prevents a later reader—or your future self—from treating a gross, reinvested benchmark as if it were a net personal result. For multiple dividends, sum only the distributions attributable to the original holding unless you are explicitly modeling reinvested shares.

For a reinvestment model, keep one row per distribution. Record the ex-dividend or specified reinvestment date, the reinvestment price, the cash dividend, the additional shares purchased and the resulting share count. Apply later dividends to the updated share count. This transparent layout makes it easier to reconcile a spreadsheet with a provider’s published methodology.

Checklist before you rely on a comparison

  • Same security or clearly identified benchmark.
  • Same start and end dates, with the price observation specified.
  • Same currency and whether the result is nominal or currency-converted.
  • Price-only versus total-return label verified.
  • Dividend or distribution treatment documented.
  • Cash versus reinvested income identified.
  • Ordinary and special-dividend rules checked.
  • Fees, fund expenses, taxes and withholding identified as gross or net.
  • Additional deposits, withdrawals and partial sales excluded from the simple formula or modeled separately.
  • Any index methodology distinguished from an individual investor’s realized return.

What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you

The difference between price return and total return quantifies how much investment income contributed over a specified period. It does not by itself show whether the stock was a good investment for a particular person, because taxes, fees, timing, reinvestment choices and cash flows can change the realized outcome.

Use price return when the question is strictly about quoted-price movement. Use total return when the question is how an investment’s value changed after including distributions. Whichever measure you choose, state the convention beside the number so readers can reproduce the comparison and understand what it represents.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the simplest formula for a stock’s price return?

Subtract the starting share price from the ending share price, divide by the starting price, and multiply by 100: (ending price − starting price) ÷ starting price × 100.

How do I calculate total return if I kept the dividends in cash?

Add dividends received per original share to the price change, then divide by the starting price: (ending price − starting price + dividends per share) ÷ starting price × 100. This assumes no other cash flows, fees or taxes.

Why is a published total return different from my brokerage result?

The published series may reinvest dividends on a specified date, include fractional units, or use gross income. Your account may hold dividends as cash, reinvest later, deduct expenses or withhold taxes.

Can total return be positive when price return is negative?

Yes. Dividends can exceed a modest price decline. In the example of a $10 start, $9.60 end and $0.70 dividend, price return is −4.0% while cash-dividend total return is 3.0%.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Should I compare a stock’s price return with an index’s total return?

Not without adjustment. Match the security or benchmark, dates, currency and return convention. A stock price return and a broad index total return differ in both the investment being measured and the treatment of dividends.

What should I do when a data provider does not explain its return label?

Do not assume the number is comparable. Find the methodology and verify whether dividends are excluded, paid as cash, reinvested, or reduced for withholding and expenses.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Price return shows only the change in the quoted share price. Total return adds dividends and may reinvest them. Compare matching securities over matching dates, then verify currency, dividend timing, reinvestment, fees and taxes before interpreting the difference.
