To compare a product’s screenshot price with its previous price, first make sure both figures refer to the same product, variant, seller, and purchase terms. Subtract the screenshot price from the previous price, then divide that difference by the previous price and multiply by 100 to calculate the percentage decrease. A screenshot records a displayed price at one moment; it does not, by itself, prove the item was previously sold at the higher price.
Check that the prices refer to the same offer
Before doing the math, match the product and terms as closely as possible. A different size, color, pack count, condition, seller, or marketplace offer can make two displayed prices incomparable.

- Identify the manufacturer and model, or another product identifier.
- Match size, color, quantity or pack count, and condition, including whether the item is new, refurbished, or otherwise described differently.
- Check the seller and offer terms. A marketplace listing from a third-party seller may not be the same offer as one sold directly by the retailer.
- Keep the currency consistent. If the prices are in different currencies, do not subtract them without first converting them and recording the exchange-rate basis and date.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission advises shoppers to note a product’s manufacturer or model and details such as size and color when comparison shopping. Singapore’s Competition and Consumer Commission advises comparing goods that consumers or trade norms regard as similar or equivalent.

A headline price can leave out costs or conditions that change the deal. Compare the same kind of total for both offers, including shipping, handling, delivery charges, taxes, and mandatory fees where applicable. Note any subscription, membership, coupon, minimum-purchase, or other condition required to get the displayed price.

Read the listing description for qualifications such as refurbished, vintage, or close-out condition. FTC consumer guidance recommends comparing total cost and reading deal terms and product descriptions. Singapore’s price-transparency guidance says disclosures should account for subsequent fees.
Record the screenshot date and both prices
Write down when the screenshot was captured, the displayed screenshot price, the claimed previous price, the seller, and the source page or listing. Make clear which price is which. If you are comparing two screenshots, check that their dates and offer details are legible and comparable.
Two snapshots show two points in time; they do not establish what the price was in between. Do not infer a continuous price history from images that do not document it.

Calculate the difference and percentage decrease
Use the claimed previous price as the baseline:
- Absolute difference: previous price − screenshot price.
- Percentage decrease: (previous price − screenshot price) ÷ previous price × 100.
For example, if the previous price was $80 and the screenshot price is $60, the difference is $20. The percentage decrease relative to $80 is ($80 − $60) ÷ $80 × 100 = 25%.
This calculation describes the arithmetic, not whether a seller’s discount claim is genuine. If the screenshot price is higher than the stated previous price, describe it as a price increase. If there is no support for the supposed earlier price, report the displayed figures without presenting the decrease as a verified discount.
Check dated price history and local rules
When the comparison matters to a buying decision or complaint, look for a retailer-provided price history or a comparison service showing dates and the relevant seller or offer. Amazon says some product pages may show 30-, 90-, and 365-day history views; availability varies by market and rollout. A history window is useful context, but does not establish that a reference price meets the rules that apply in every jurisdiction.

Keep dated evidence, such as saved records of the listing or price-history view, if you need to explain how you reached your conclusion. Do not treat a crossed-out price or a screenshot alone as proof that an item was previously sold at that price.
Price-reduction rules vary by jurisdiction
There is no single global standard for how a seller may present a previous price. In the EU, traders announcing a price reduction generally must indicate the lowest price applied during at least the 30 days before the reduction, subject to exceptions. See Your Europe’s guidance on unfair pricing for the consumer-facing explanation.
Australia’s ACCC describes “was/now” claims as potentially misleading when the product was not sold at the claimed higher price for a reasonable period, or when only a small proportion of sales occurred at that price. Singapore’s guidance says comparisons should have a genuine, valid basis supported by regular research and records. These are jurisdiction-specific standards, not rules to apply worldwide.

In a March 26, 2026 report, the European Commission said 30% of 314 online traders checked referenced discounts incorrectly in a coordinated check. The finding concerns that sample and EU enforcement context; it is not a rate for all retailers. The Commission’s report says discounts must be based on the lowest price applied in the preceding 30 days: EU check reveals misleading sales practices online.
The Commission’s 2022 sweep includes examples illustrating why the reference price matters. In one example, a displayed 40% discount used a €39.99 reference price, while the lowest price in the preceding 30 days was €27.99; under the cited EU rule, the discount was 14%. Another example showed a price rising from €19.48 to €21.66 while a fictitious €28.81 reference price made the offer appear to be a 24% discount. These are examples in the Commission’s sweep, not typical discount figures: European Commission 2022 sweep on Black Friday sales.

Common comparison mistakes
- Comparing different models, variants, pack sizes, conditions, sellers, or currencies as if they were the same offer.
- Using only the item’s headline price while leaving out required shipping or fees.
- Assuming a crossed-out price is a verified historical price because it appears in a screenshot.
- Calling the calculated percentage a genuine discount without checking the reference price and the rules in the relevant market.
- Treating the EU 30-day standard as a universal legal requirement.
- Assuming a retailer’s price-history feature is available in every country or covers every seller and offer.
