Compare a trade-in’s confirmed cash value with the money you could realistically keep from a private sale—not with a buyer’s asking price. Estimate a likely sale price from completed sales of similar complete PCs, subtract fees, shipping, packing, and other costs, then weigh the remaining difference against the time and coordination each option requires. Neither route is always better.
Build an apples-to-apples comparison
Use the same computer, condition, and included accessories in both estimates. For a trade-in, start with the amount you can actually expect to receive after any stated inspection changes and shipping terms. For a private sale, use a plausible completed-sale price and subtract the costs you would pay.

Self-sale net = expected completed-sale price − marketplace and listing costs − seller-paid shipping and packing − other direct costs. Treat this as an estimate, not a guarantee of what you will receive or how quickly the PC will sell.
Estimate what a complete PC could sell for
Look for recent completed sales of whole computers that resemble yours. Match the graphics card and processor first, then compare memory, storage, condition, and included accessories. An unsold listing shows what a seller hopes to get; it does not show what a buyer paid.

Do not add the original retail prices of the parts and assume their sum is the PC’s current resale value. There is no established formula or verified average discount here for gaming desktops. If close full-system comparisons are scarce, use a range based on the transactions you can see, and note the date and how closely they match. An older eBay selling resource discusses looking up sold prices, but its examples concern consoles and handheld systems; it does not provide current gaming-desktop price data.
Calculate marketplace costs for your actual listing
Fees depend on the marketplace, country, listing category, seller account, and setup. For eBay.com’s US fee schedule, the official page says qualifying basic listings can receive up to 250 zero-insertion-fee listings per month. It also lists a Computers/Tablets & Networking schedule with category exceptions. The separate eBay Store fee schedule lists 9.35% of the total sale up to $2,500 and 2.35% on the portion above $2,500 for most Computers/Tablets & Networking categories, with exceptions including Desktops & All-In-Ones and certain components.

Those are US page rates, not a universal fee estimate: do not apply the Store schedule to a non-Store seller or transfer US rates to another country’s eBay site. Check the current fee page for your account and the category your PC listing will use, then calculate against your expected sale price and shipping arrangement.
Check the offer terms before sending the PC
A headline quote may depend on an inspection. Before accepting, get clear answers to these questions:

- Is the offer for the complete tower or only for eligible components?
- What cosmetic and functional condition does the quote assume?
- Will the buyer inspect the PC, and what could trigger a reduction or rejection?
- How and by what deadline can you accept or decline a revised offer?
- Who pays return shipping if you decline the revised amount or the PC is rejected?
- How will payment be made, and when should you expect it?
Policies vary by trade-in partner. Swappa’s buyback FAQ says the partner supplies prepaid shipping, but it does not establish that a complete gaming desktop qualifies. Check eligibility and written terms for the particular service rather than assuming a general buyback policy covers your tower.
Choose according to the net difference and the work involved
- A trade-in may suit you if the confirmed amount is acceptable and you value a simpler process, fewer buyer conversations, or a more defined transaction path.
- A private sale may suit you if comparable completed sales suggest a meaningful net premium after fees and shipping, and you are willing to manage the listing and handoff.
- If the estimates are close, the simpler or more certain route may be preferable if you value your time and want less coordination. If the private-sale estimate looks notably higher, verify the comparisons and every cost before treating that gap as real.
There is no evidence-based universal break-even percentage: the right threshold depends on the PC, local market, transaction costs, and how you value your time.

Account for location and delivery
Your country and local demand affect which buyers and marketplaces are practical, and fee schedules differ by market. A local specialist can be another route where one operates: for example, Gaming PC Buyers advertises purchases of gaming PCs, workstations, and full setups in its stated UK service area. That is a geographically limited example, not a recommendation for other regions; compare any written cash offer with your self-sale net estimate.

Local pickup can avoid shipping a tower. If you ship instead, include packing materials and seller-paid postage in the calculation, and choose packaging for the actual case dimensions and components. A safe-shipping resource aimed at game systems does not establish a particular box’s suitability for a desktop.
