Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Short answer: You cannot turn a Steam concurrent-player number into a reliable total audience for PlayStation, Xbox, or the Epic Games Store. Steam exposes an observed, moment-in-time count; console and Epic audiences usually require developer telemetry, platform reporting, or a clearly labeled estimate. A defensible comparison uses the same metric, time window, geography, game version, access rules, and overlap treatment for every platform.
Start with the metric, not the platform
“Player count” can mean several different things. A concurrent count answers how many sessions are active at one moment. Daily active users (DAU) count distinct accounts or people active during a day. Monthly active users (MAU) extend that window to a month. Unique players, owners, sales, and hours played are different measurements again.

| Metric | What it measures | What it cannot tell you | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Concurrent players | Sessions active at a specific moment | Unique people, owners, sales, or activity across the rest of the day | Load, matchmaking pressure, and live-event scale |
| Daily active users (DAU) | Distinct accounts or people active during one day | How many were online simultaneously | Day-to-day reach and retention |
| Monthly active users (MAU) | Distinct accounts or people active during a month | Frequency, session length, or peak demand | Monthly audience size |
| Unique players | Distinct people or accounts in a defined period | Concurrent load unless paired with session data | Cross-platform audience estimates |
| Hours played | Total time spent in the game | How many people generated that time | Engagement comparisons when definitions match |
| Owners or sales | Purchases or entitlements | Whether owners still play, or free and subscription access | Commercial performance, not current activity |
A Steam peak is therefore not interchangeable with a console MAU estimate, and neither is equivalent to sales. Write the metric beside every number before comparing it.
What Steam’s public number actually represents
A live concurrent snapshot
Steam’s public statistics page shows the number of users who are concurrently active on Steam at the time of observation. On October 17, 2026, Valve’s platform-wide page showed 28,671,358 current concurrent users and a 41,889,474 peak. Those figures describe all of Steam, not a particular game. A game’s entry in a Steam chart is likewise a concurrent session count for that title, not a census of everyone who owns it.

Because the value changes continuously, record the timestamp and timezone. A count captured during a regional evening, a major update, or a weekend will not be directly comparable with a weekday morning count.
Peak, average, and current values answer different questions
- Current: the observed count at the moment you look.
- Peak: the highest observed concurrent value in the selected period.
- Average: the arithmetic mean of concurrent observations over a defined period.
A peak is useful for identifying maximum demand, but it is especially sensitive to launch timing, events, patches, and sampling intervals. An average smooths short spikes but still measures simultaneous sessions, not distinct people.
Why a Steam average is not a unique-player total
SteamPeaks describes its method this way: “A daily average is the mean of the observed minute buckets after duplicate samples are removed, and it is an average number of concurrent players, never a count of unique people.” Its heavily played games are sampled every five minutes, and coverage can be partial. A day with an average of 10,000 concurrent players could represent many more than 10,000 unique people if sessions turn over throughout the day; it could also represent fewer individuals playing for long periods. Do not multiply an average by 24 hours and call the result a user count.

Console platforms rarely publish per-game live counts
PlayStation and Xbox do not generally expose a universal, public, per-game concurrent counter equivalent to Steam’s chart. A publisher may disclose cross-platform DAU, MAU, sales, or event participation, while a developer may have first-party telemetry for every session. Those are stronger sources than anecdotes about matchmaking speed, populated servers, or a game appearing in a console store chart.

If first-party data is unavailable, a measurement company may model console activity from panels, surveys, observed behavior, or other signals. Such a result can be useful for directional benchmarking, but it remains an estimate. Name the provider, period, geography, methodology, and uncertainty instead of presenting it as an official platform count.
Epic Games Store activity is not the same as Epic account activity
Separate three concepts:
- Epic Games Store activity: play or purchase behavior tied to the PC storefront.
- Epic account activity: activity associated with an Epic identity, which may span several games and devices.
- Epic Online Services (EOS) game telemetry: developer-implemented data that can combine platforms for one title.
Epic Online Services describes its cross-platform data capability as “One data set for all platforms.” That unified view exists only when a developer integrates the relevant services and reports the resulting game-level data. It is not a public counter for every game sold through the store.
The 750-million-account figure has a narrow meaning
Epic Online Services reported 750+ million Epic Games accounts in 2023. This is an ecosystem account figure, not the number of people playing a specific title, active users in a month, or users on the Epic Games Store at one moment. Accounts can be inactive, can represent the same person across devices, and can be used for different games.

A defensible cross-platform comparison workflow
- Name the metric. Decide whether the comparison is about concurrent players, DAU, MAU, unique players, hours, owners, or sales. Do not compare unlike metrics in one ratio.
- Freeze the time window. Record the UTC start and end, whether it covers launch week or steady state, and the game build, season, or event. SteamPeaks’ comparison tool uses UTC calendar days; its “today” view is partial, so completed days are safer.
- Capture Steam consistently. Save the current count, daily peak, and a completed-day average from Valve or a documented sampler. Label each as concurrent and preserve the observation time.
- Obtain console data. Prefer publisher or developer cross-platform telemetry. If none is available, use a named measurement provider and report that its figure is estimated, including its methodology and coverage.
- Obtain Epic data. Distinguish storefront activity from EOS account-linked telemetry. Ask for game-level statistics when the developer has implemented EOS; an ecosystem account total is not a substitute.
- Normalize geography and eligibility. Match countries or regions, age eligibility, free-to-play versus paid access, subscription access, and cross-play opt-in rules. If scopes differ, show separate rows rather than forcing a ratio.
- Show uncertainty. Use ranges or an “estimated” label for modeled data. Include sample coverage, missing periods, confidence intervals, or the provider’s caveat.
- Explain overlap. State whether a person can appear on multiple platform rows. A unified account can link activity across Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch, so adding platform totals may double-count people.
How to document the Steam side correctly
Use completed periods when possible
For a daily comparison, choose a completed UTC day and report the daily peak plus the concurrent average. A partial “today” value can rise later and should not be compared with a finished day. For launch analysis, define the launch moment in UTC and keep the same duration for every platform.

Record sampling and coverage
SteamPeaks’ five-minute sampling for heavily played games means the recorded peak may miss a short spike between observations. Its coverage can also be partial, so state whether the series is a full observation or a sampled view. Removing duplicate samples improves the average but does not transform concurrent observations into unique users.
Keep platform-wide context separate
Valve’s 28,671,358 current users and 41,889,474 peak on October 17, 2026 can provide context for Steam’s overall scale, but neither number belongs in a game-level platform comparison. A game’s Steam value must come from that title’s own entry and period.
Choosing console and Epic evidence
| Evidence type | What it can support | Required qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Developer or publisher telemetry | Game-level DAU, MAU, unique players, concurrency, or cross-platform totals | Metric definition, account deduplication, time window, regions, and platforms included |
| EOS cross-platform data | A unified dataset when the title has implemented the services | Integration scope, linked-account rules, and whether figures are sessions or unique accounts |
| Platform-owner reporting | Official store, subscription, or engagement statistics when disclosed | Whether the figure covers a game, service, region, or broader ecosystem |
| Panel or modeled provider | Directional PC and console benchmarking | Provider, model, sample, confidence range, and observation period |
| Public anecdotes | Qualitative signs of activity | Never convert matchmaking or community impressions into a player count |
Sensor Tower’s Video Game Insights product page describes coverage of more than 140,000 games, over 10 years of daily time series, and data aggregated from more than 4 million public player profiles. Those are coverage and data-basis claims, not a guarantee that every title has an exact count. Treat any output as modeled or observed according to the provider’s stated method.
Normalize the audience before calculating a ratio
| Axis | Question to answer | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Metric | Are all rows concurrent, DAU, MAU, unique players, hours, owners, or sales? | Different metrics cannot share a meaningful numerator and denominator. |
| Time | What are the exact UTC dates and times? | Launches, weekends, patches, and time zones create large swings. |
| Geography | Worldwide or the same named markets? | Regional availability and play habits differ. |
| Access | Paid ownership, free access, subscription access, or all eligible users? | The addressable audience changes with the access model. |
| Version | Which build, season, and event state? | A content update can move every platform at once. |
| Cross-play | Are cross-play users included, excluded, or separated? | Matchmaking pools may combine platforms while reporting remains platform-specific. |
| Identity | Are rows people, platform accounts, or sessions? | One person can create multiple accounts or play on several platforms. |
| Coverage | Is the value complete, sampled, or modeled? | Sampling and estimation require uncertainty ranges. |
When one row cannot be normalized, keep it in a separate section and explain the mismatch. A transparent “not comparable” result is more useful than a precise-looking but invalid ratio.

How to present the final comparison
Use a table that makes the evidence visible instead of presenting a single combined total:
| Platform or source | Metric | Window (UTC) | Geography | Value | Evidence type | Coverage and overlap note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Concurrent, peak, or completed-day average | Exact start and end | Defined scope | Reported value | Valve counter or documented sampler | Sampling interval and whether the value is partial |
| PlayStation | Same metric where available | Exact start and end | Defined scope | Reported or estimated value | Developer, publisher, platform report, or named model | Account definition and uncertainty |
| Xbox | Same metric where available | Exact start and end | Defined scope | Reported or estimated value | Developer, publisher, platform report, or named model | Account definition and uncertainty |
| Epic Games Store or EOS | Storefront activity or unified game metric | Exact start and end | Defined scope | Reported or estimated value | Developer telemetry or named model | Storefront versus linked-account scope |
Do not fill an unavailable cell with a guessed share of Steam. Mark it as not stated by the relevant source, and explain why no public figure exists. If you later calculate a range, show the assumptions and keep it labeled as modeled.
Common mistakes and the correction for each
“Steam has 5,000 players, so the game has 5,000 players.”
The number is concurrent. The game may have more unique players over the day, or fewer people if a small group plays for long sessions. Report it as concurrent and specify the timestamp or period.
“The console audience is three times Steam because matchmaking feels busier.”
Matchmaking experience depends on region, mode, skill band, cross-play settings, bots, and queue design. Use telemetry or a named estimate; do not derive a platform ratio from anecdotes.
Best Value
“Epic has 750 million players for this game.”
The 750+ million figure refers to Epic accounts reported in 2023. It does not describe a title’s players. Request game-level EOS data or a separately documented estimate.
Adding every platform row to get the worldwide audience
Cross-platform players can appear on multiple rows, particularly when accounts are linked or cross-play is enabled. Sum only deduplicated unique-player data with a documented identity method. Otherwise present platform totals separately.
Comparing a peak with a monthly estimate
A peak captures one instant; MAU covers a month. Put them in different tables or obtain matching metrics. Precision in the arithmetic cannot repair a mismatch in definitions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose the comparison that matches your decision
- Server capacity or event scheduling: use concurrent current and peak values, with timestamps and sampling notes.
- Retention and reach: use DAU and MAU, ideally deduplicated across platforms.
- Commercial performance: use sales or owners, while separating free and subscription access.
- Cross-platform matchmaking planning: use telemetry split by platform, region, mode, and cross-play status.
- Market benchmarking without first-party access: use a named modeled provider, publish its methodology and uncertainty, and avoid calling the result an official count.
The reliable conclusion is often narrower than the question. You may be able to say exactly how many concurrent Steam sessions were observed and separately report a modeled console range, while being unable to establish an Epic Games Store count. That is a valid comparison when every limitation is visible.
