How to Compare a Company’s Half-Yearly Results With Its Previous Period

For a like-for-like trend, compare the latest half-year with the corresponding half-year of the previous financial year. Then compare the latest half-year with the immediately preceding half only when you label that sequential comparison clearly. Use the same months, accounting basis, currency and metric definitions; compare balance-sheet figures at the appropriate dates and cash-flow figures cumulatively year to date.

A reliable comparison is more than subtracting two profit numbers. You must identify the reporting framework, match each statement with the right comparator, calculate movements consistently, and read the notes for seasonality, unusual items, accounting-policy changes and revised estimates.

What “previous period” should mean

The phrase previous period can describe two different comparisons:

  • Year on year: the latest interim period versus the corresponding interim period in the immediately preceding financial year. This is the default for judging an underlying trend because it compares similar seasons.
  • Sequential half year: the latest half-year versus the half-year that ended immediately before it. This can show recent momentum, but it may compare different seasons and different operating conditions.

Write the comparison label beside every figure, such as “six months ended 30 June 2026 versus six months ended 30 June 2025” or “first half of 2026 versus second half of 2025.” Never call a sequential comparison year on year. A company whose financial year does not end in December may publish a half-year covering a different pair of calendar months, so use the dates printed in its report rather than assuming January-to-June.

For an IFRS interim report, IAS 34 specifies the comparative information expected in the statements, but it does not itself require every entity in every country to publish an interim report. Publication duties come mainly from local law, stock-exchange rules or a regulator. Confirm the company’s stated reporting framework and jurisdiction before treating any presentation as a legal requirement. See the IFRS Foundation overview of IAS 34 Interim Financial Reporting.

Step 1: Confirm the reporting framework, dates and scope

Read the cover page and accounting statement

Record the company’s financial year, the exact beginning and end dates of the interim period, the currency and the framework named in the report. An entity that says its interim report complies with IFRS applies IAS 34. Australian entities may refer to AASB 134, the Australian equivalent text, available from the Australian Accounting Standards Board. A company using another national framework may have different presentation rules.

  • Note whether the report covers a consolidated group or the parent company alone.
  • Check whether figures are presented in thousands, millions or another unit.
  • Check whether amounts are in the company’s functional currency or translated into a reporting currency.
  • Record whether the numbers are reported, continuing-operations-only, or adjusted by management.
  • Check if the period is exactly six months or a 26-week, 27-week or otherwise defined interim interval.

Separate interim-period and year-to-date columns

Many half-year statements show both the current interim period and the cumulative total from the start of the financial year. For a first-half report, those may both represent six months; for a third-quarter report, the current quarter and nine-month year-to-date figures differ. IAS 34 paragraph 20 calls for comparisons for both the current interim period and the year to date. Use the column that matches the question you are answering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Build a like-for-like comparison table

Before interpreting performance, copy the relevant current and comparative figures into one worksheet. Keep the company’s definitions and units unchanged until you have documented any adjustment.

Item Latest half-year Default comparator What the comparison answers
Revenue Current interim period and current year to date Same interim months and same year-to-date months in the prior financial year Whether sales grew or contracted on a comparable seasonal basis
Operating profit and operating margin Current period operating result and revenue Prior-year corresponding period Whether core profitability and cost conversion changed
Profit for the period Current interim and year-to-date profit Prior-year corresponding interim and year-to-date profit How earnings after financing, tax and non-operating items moved
Earnings per share Basic and diluted EPS, if shown Corresponding prior-year EPS on the company’s stated basis What changed for each share, including dilution effects
Cash flow from operations Cumulative cash flow from the start of the year Matching prior-year cumulative period Whether reported earnings are converting into cash
Assets, liabilities, cash and debt Balance at the latest half-year end Balance at the preceding financial year-end How liquidity, leverage and working capital changed at a point in time
Changes in equity Cumulative movement since the financial-year start Matching prior-year cumulative movement How profit, dividends, buybacks and other equity movements affected capital

Do not mix a reported measure in one column with an adjusted measure in the other. If management highlights “underlying” or “constant-currency” results, copy the company’s definition, show the reported result as well, and explain the reconciliation.

Step 3: Calculate absolute and percentage movements

Absolute change

For every metric, calculate:

Absolute change = latest value − comparator value

Keep the original unit. A change from $480 million to $525 million is an increase of $45 million, not merely “up.” State whether the figures are consolidated, audited or unaudited if the report does so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Percentage change

Use:

Percentage change = (latest value − comparator value) ÷ |comparator value| × 100

The absolute value in the denominator prevents a negative comparator from reversing the arithmetic sign. It does not make a loss-to-profit percentage economically intuitive. If the comparator is zero, a percentage change is undefined; report the absolute movement and describe the change in words. When a small comparator produces a very large percentage, show the underlying amounts beside the percentage.

Margins and per-share measures

Calculate operating margin as operating profit divided by revenue, and net margin as profit for the period divided by revenue, using the same period for numerator and denominator. Report the movement in percentage points as well as the relative percentage change. For example, a margin moving from 12% to 15% improved by 3 percentage points; describing it only as a 25% increase can obscure the scale of the change.

EPS can move differently from total profit because the weighted-average share count changes through buybacks, new issues, options or acquisitions. Compare basic with basic and diluted with diluted, and read the share-count note before attributing an EPS movement to operating performance.

Step 4: Use the correct comparator for each financial statement

Financial statements do not all measure the same kind of time interval. A balance sheet is a snapshot at one date; income and cash-flow statements describe activity over a period.

Statement or measure Correct half-year comparison Reason
Statement of financial position (balance sheet) Latest half-year-end balance versus the preceding financial year-end balance Both are point-in-time snapshots; comparing two six-month flows would be incorrect.
Income statement Current interim period versus the corresponding prior-year interim period; also current year to date versus prior-year year to date Both sides cover matching operating intervals.
Cash-flow statement Current cumulative year to date versus the matching prior-year cumulative period Cash flows accumulate from the financial-year start.
Statement of changes in equity Current cumulative year to date versus the matching prior-year cumulative period Movements include profit, dividends, share transactions and other changes during the interval.

Balance-sheet analysis

Compare cash, borrowings, lease liabilities, receivables, inventory and current liabilities at the two stated dates. Then ask what caused the movement: seasonal working-capital build, acquisition, debt repayment, currency translation, dividend payment or a change in classification. A higher debt balance at half-year end is not automatically evidence of deterioration if the business normally borrows ahead of its peak season.

Cash-flow analysis

Use operating cash flow for the cumulative period, then examine working-capital movements, capital expenditure and financing cash flows. A profit increase accompanied by weaker operating cash flow requires an explanation, such as receivables growth, inventory investment or timing of supplier payments. Do not compare a six-month operating cash-flow total with a single-date cash balance as if they were equivalent measures.

Step 5: Read the notes before explaining a movement

Headline numbers rarely explain themselves. IAS 34 interim reporting generally applies the same accounting policies as the latest annual financial statements, while interim preparation usually relies more heavily on estimates. The IFRS Foundation explains that interim reports “generally require a greater use of estimation methods than annual financial statements” in its IAS 34 overview.

Accounting-policy changes

Look for a note describing a new standard, revised policy, reclassification or restatement. Determine whether the prior-year comparative has been restated. A reported increase may reflect presentation or recognition changes rather than new business activity. Use restated comparatives when the company supplies them, and identify the basis in your worksheet.

Changes in estimates

Interim tax expense, provisions, impairment tests, warranties, returns and expected credit losses may be updated as more information becomes available. Record whether management says an estimate changed and whether the effect is temporary or expected to affect the full year. Avoid calling an estimate-driven movement a permanent operating trend.

Unusual and non-recurring items

Search the notes for restructuring costs, asset disposals, litigation, impairments, acquisition costs, fair-value movements and government grants. Keep the reported result visible, then show any company-defined adjusted result separately. Do not label an item non-recurring merely because it appears once; explain its nature and the evidence for treating it separately.

Seasonality and cyclicality

Read the description of seasonal sales, production shutdowns, weather exposure, subscription renewals and inventory cycles. A half-year may capture a peak or trough that makes sequential comparison misleading. Notes can also explain why interim margins differ from the annual pattern.

Step 6: Interpret the results in a deliberate sequence

Use a consistent reading order so one attractive figure does not dominate the conclusion.

  1. Start with revenue. Identify organic growth, acquisitions, disposals, volume, price and foreign-exchange effects when disclosed.
  2. Move to operating profit and margin. Decide whether costs grew faster or slower than sales, and separate gross-margin, operating-expense and one-off effects.
  3. Check profit after tax. Reconcile operating performance with financing costs, tax, associates, discontinued operations and unusual items.
  4. Review EPS and share count. Determine whether per-share growth reflects higher profit, fewer shares or both.
  5. Test cash conversion. Compare operating cash flow with profit and investigate working-capital or tax timing.
  6. Assess liquidity and debt. Review cash, undrawn facilities if disclosed, maturities, covenant language and net debt at the half-year-end date.
  7. Read management’s outlook last. Compare guidance with the reported first-half result, but distinguish management’s expectation from a completed financial measure.

This sequence is analytical guidance, not a regulatory checklist. A company can have strong revenue growth but falling cash generation, or stable profit with weakening liquidity; no single metric settles the assessment.

How to handle seasonal businesses

A year-on-year half-year comparison is usually the fairest starting point, but it may not show a full seasonal cycle. IAS 34 paragraph 21 says that, for a highly seasonal business, information for the twelve months up to the interim date and comparative information for the prior twelve-month period may be useful. The wording appears in the official IAS 34 standard text.

Trailing-twelve-month method

Build a twelve-month total ending on the latest half-year date and compare it with the twelve-month total ending on the equivalent date a year earlier. Use the company’s quarterly or interim disclosures to assemble the figures, and explain any missing or restated quarter. This reduces the effect of a single peak season, but it can hide a sharp recent change, so show the latest half-year separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sequential comparison with a seasonal warning

If you compare the latest half with the immediately preceding half, identify the seasonal reason the periods differ. A winter retailer, for example, may have a weaker second half despite an improving year-on-year first half. Sequential data is useful for recent operational momentum only when the reader understands the calendar effect.

Worked example: making the arithmetic transparent

The following numbers are illustrative, not a company’s reported results. Assume a business reports the six months ended 30 June 2026 and gives the six months ended 30 June 2025 as the comparative.

Metric 30 June 2026 half-year 30 June 2025 half-year Absolute change Percentage change
Revenue $525 million $480 million +$45 million +9.4%
Operating profit $78 million $72 million +$6 million +8.3%
Operating margin 14.9% 15.0% −0.1 percentage point −0.7% relative
Profit for the period $42 million $36 million +$6 million +16.7%
Operating cash flow $30 million $44 million −$14 million −31.8%

Revenue rose 9.4%, while operating profit rose 8.3%, so the operating margin slipped slightly. Net profit grew faster than operating profit, which calls for a check of financing, tax or unusual items rather than an automatic claim of stronger operations. Operating cash flow fell despite higher profit, so the notes and cash-flow reconciliation should be examined for receivables, inventory, tax or payment timing. The example demonstrates why revenue, margins, profit and cash must be read together.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

  • Using the immediately preceding half as the only comparator: add the corresponding prior-year half and label any sequential result separately.
  • Comparing a half-year balance sheet with a prior six-month balance: use the preceding financial year-end snapshot instead.
  • Mixing interim and year-to-date columns: match current interim with prior-year interim, and current year to date with prior-year year to date.
  • Ignoring currency or unit changes: convert only when the method is documented, and state the exchange-rate basis; otherwise keep the company’s presentation.
  • Comparing reported profit with adjusted profit: show both and identify the company’s adjustment definition.
  • Calling a loss-to-profit swing a meaningful percentage: provide absolute amounts and a narrative because the percentage is difficult to interpret.
  • Treating an estimate as final fact: check interim notes for updated provisions, tax rates, impairment assumptions and expected credit losses.
  • Assuming every company must publish under IAS 34: verify the jurisdiction, regulator and framework; IAS 34 does not create a universal interim-reporting mandate.
  • Ignoring restatements: use the restated comparative when supplied and explain why the prior figure differs from an earlier release.
  • Reading management commentary without the statements: reconcile commentary with reported revenue, margin, cash, debt and EPS.

A repeatable half-year comparison checklist

  1. Write down the financial-year dates, half-year dates, currency, units and reporting framework.
  2. Confirm whether the report is consolidated and whether comparatives were restated.
  3. Copy current interim, prior-year interim, current year-to-date and prior-year year-to-date columns.
  4. Compare income-statement metrics on matching periods.
  5. Compare cash flow and changes in equity cumulatively year to date.
  6. Compare balance-sheet snapshots with the preceding financial year-end.
  7. Calculate absolute changes, percentage changes and margin percentage-point movements.
  8. Check basic and diluted EPS alongside weighted-average shares.
  9. Read notes for policy changes, estimates, unusual items and seasonality.
  10. For a highly seasonal business, add trailing-twelve-month information where available.
  11. Explain divergences between revenue, profit, EPS, cash flow, debt and liquidity.
  12. State clearly which movements are reported, adjusted, seasonal or estimate-driven.

How to write the final conclusion

End with a qualified assessment tied to the evidence: identify the direction of year-on-year revenue and operating performance, state whether margins expanded or contracted, explain the relationship between profit and operating cash flow, and describe the balance-sheet liquidity and debt position at the half-year date. Mention any one-off, seasonal, policy or estimate effect that prevents a simple trend conclusion. If the sequential half-year tells a different story, present it as a separate, clearly dated perspective rather than replacing the like-for-like comparison.

The most defensible conclusion is therefore not “profit was higher” in isolation. It is a statement such as: revenue increased against the comparable half, operating margin narrowed, net profit benefited from a non-operating item, operating cash flow weakened because of working capital, and debt increased at the reporting date. That format tells the reader what changed, how large the change was and why the headline result may or may not continue.
