How to Compare 4 Log Management Services for Startup SaaS in 2026 (No ELK)

There is no universal cheapest or best log service for a startup: the answer depends on how much data you ingest, how much must be searchable immediately, how long you keep it, and how often you query it. Compare Datadog, Grafana Cloud Logs, Axiom, and Better Stack against the same workload—not just a headline price per gigabyte—and decide which service model fits your team.

Compare the cost model, not just the ingest price

These services meter different parts of log use. Ingestion, processing, indexing, retained storage, query scans, and bundled observability allowances are not interchangeable. A low ingest price does not tell you the monthly bill if searchable indexing or long retention costs extra.

The figures below are vendor-published public prices and product details accessed on October 2, 2026. They are not a like-for-like quote or an independent cost benchmark. Prices and eligibility may vary with contract, billing, currency, tax, account, and region; check each linked vendor source and calculator before deciding.

Service Billing shape and published allowance Retention and search model Query, ingestion, and operational considerations
Datadog Separate ingestion and indexed-event dimensions. Public list prices include $0.10 per ingested GB and $1.70 per million indexed events at 15-day retention. Flex Logs lists storage at $0.05 per million stored events per month; its Starter line lists $0.60 per million stored events per month for 6-, 12-, or 15-month retention. These are distinct listed price lines, not a modeled total. Datadog public price list. Decide what volume needs the indexed-log path and what can use Flex Logs. Datadog says Flex Logs supports historical investigation without rehydration; its launch announcement describes fixed monthly compute sizes. Flex Logs launch announcement. Include indexed events, stored events, retention tier, and any applicable compute in the vendor’s estimate. The public figures do not establish a total for your event sizes or workload. Verify the searchable and alerting behavior your team needs for each tier.
Grafana Cloud Logs Billing dimensions include processed GB, written GB, retained GB, and queried GB above fair use. Documentation describes 50 GB written per month free before written-volume charges, with query fair use up to 100 times written volume per month. The product page also lists an always-free tier with 50 GB ingested per month and 14-day retention. Pro starting rates shown are $0.05/GB processed, $0.40/GB written, and $0.10/GB retained. Those measures are different; do not treat the free-tier ingest allowance as identical to the written-volume allowance. Logs pricing documentation and Grafana Cloud Logs. Minimum retention is documented as 14 days for free accounts and 30 days for paid accounts; retention beyond 30 days incurs charges for each additional 30-day increment. Grafana says Logs is powered by Loki and supports LogQL and Logs Drilldown. Processed volume reflects what arrives; reducing or dropping data can reduce what is written, but it does not erase the processed-volume dimension. Logs can be viewed alongside metrics, traces, and profiles, which may suit teams already using that Grafana Cloud workflow.
Axiom Axiom’s FAQ describes log management and analytics. A vendor-authored comparison characterizes its pricing as usage-based across loaded data, queries, storage, and a platform fee, in contrast to Datadog’s separate ingestion/indexing dimensions. This is Axiom’s characterization, not an independent comparison; use Axiom’s official pricing calculator for a current workload estimate. Axiom FAQ and Axiom vs Datadog comparison. The free Personal plan documents 30-day retention. Axiom Cloud and BYOC can configure retention to customer needs, including “Forever,” according to the FAQ. The cited material establishes log analytics but does not establish a specific query language for this comparison. Confirm query behavior, limits, and exact charges in the current product documentation and calculator rather than assuming parity with SQL or LogQL.
Better Stack Its pricing page lists 3 GB/month retained for 3 days included for Logs & Traces, $0.10/GB ingestion, $0.05/GB/month retention, standard querying included, and query boost at $0.001/GB scanned. Bundles also include 30-day log retention, but bundle allowances and prices vary; evaluate the specific bundle and billing cadence you would buy. Better Stack pricing. Retention can be configured by source, according to the product page. The listed included retention allowance is limited to 3 GB/month retained for 3 days; it is not a blanket 30-day allowance outside applicable bundles. Better Stack describes ingestion using Vector, Syslog, or OpenTelemetry, with eBPF collectors and VRL transformations that can redact PII or discard events. It offers SQL queries through an HTTP API. Self-serve clusters are listed in Virginia, Oregon, Germany, and Singapore; custom deployments can be requested. Verify account and regional availability. Better Stack log management.

Operationally, a managed service does not eliminate the team’s work: you still choose what to collect, how to parse and transform it, what to retain, what to query, and which alerts matter. The published descriptions identify collection options and pricing dimensions, but they do not establish comparative setup time or which product is easiest to operate.

Define the workload before you shortlist

Write down the requirements that drive cost and usefulness before opening a pricing calculator. Use measured production data if available; for a pre-launch service, make assumptions explicit and revisit them as traffic grows.

  • Ingest: average and peak GB per day, plus approximate events per month and average event size.
  • Searchability: the fraction of logs that must be immediately searchable or useful for alerts, versus data kept mainly for later investigation.
  • Retention: required online days for each log class—for example, application errors, audit records, and routine request logs. Set each category from your operational and compliance needs, not from a vendor’s default.
  • Queries: estimated query scans per month, the expected scanned volume, and whether searches are routine dashboards, incident investigations, or both.
  • Growth: an expected monthly or quarterly increase in traffic, and any known seasonal peak.
  • Related telemetry: whether engineers need logs correlated with metrics, traces, or profiles in the same workflow.
  • Constraints: required region, security controls, deployment model, and any user, host, or other account counts that a vendor calculator asks for.
  • Portability: whether the team needs standard collectors or protocols such as OpenTelemetry, Vector, or Syslog, and whether transformations or redaction must happen before storage.

Keep average and peak traffic separate. A monthly average can hide bursts that affect ingestion handling or the usefulness of live investigation. Record whether your numbers describe raw data sent, data after transformation, or data retained so that you do not compare unlike quantities.

Build a comparable monthly cost worksheet

Do not force all four products into a single per-GB formula. Enter the same workload into each vendor’s current calculator, then record which dimensions are included and which add cost. A useful worksheet has one row per service and columns for the following inputs and outputs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Worksheet field What to enter or record
Traffic profile Average GB/day, peak GB/day, monthly GB, estimated events/month, and average event size.
Searchable fraction Share of monthly volume requiring immediate search or alert use; identify any lower-cost or archive-style path separately.
Retention by class Days required for each log category and the corresponding volume. Do not combine short-lived operational logs with longer-lived audit data unless their retention need is the same.
Query load Expected queries and GB scanned per month, plus any amount over a documented fair-use allowance.
Growth and scale inputs Growth assumption, peak factor, and any users, hosts, or other units requested by the vendor calculator.
Service estimate Base or unavoidable charge, then separate ingestion/processing, indexing, retained storage, query, support, and bundled observability components where applicable.
Operational fit Required collector, parsing or redaction work, region, security controls, and needed correlation with other telemetry.
  1. Measure or estimate the same workload. Use one set of traffic, retention, and query assumptions for all four calculators.
  2. Model search tiers explicitly. For Datadog, distinguish indexed events from Flex Logs storage. For Grafana Cloud, track processed, written, retained, and queried volume separately. For Better Stack, distinguish ingestion, retention, and any query boost. For Axiom, use its current calculator rather than inferring a bill from a competitor comparison.
  3. Separate required from optional spend. Mark the cost of the minimum viable retention and search requirements, then add longer retention, more indexing or query capacity, support, and bundles as separate scenarios.
  4. Test a growth case. Recalculate with the traffic increase your team expects, and check whether a peak or higher query load changes the pricing tier or allowance.
  5. Recheck the public terms before purchase. The figures here are vendor-published information accessed on October 2, 2026, not guaranteed quotes. Confirm current prices, region, billing cadence, and eligibility on the vendor’s own pages.

Choose based on the team’s operating model

Consider Datadog when indexed and lower-cost log paths can be separated

Datadog’s published model makes the key planning question visible: which events justify the indexed-log price, and which can use Flex Logs? Estimate both populations instead of applying the indexed-event rate to all retained data. Confirm what investigation and alert workflows are available on the tier you plan to use.

Consider Grafana Cloud Logs when Loki, LogQL, and telemetry correlation fit

Grafana Cloud’s model rewards careful attention to processed versus written volume and query fair use. Its Loki foundation, LogQL, Logs Drilldown, and stated ability to view logs alongside metrics, traces, and profiles may be relevant when that shared workflow matters. Calculate with the separate billing dimensions rather than treating the written-volume allowance as a general ingest limit.

Consider Axiom when configurable retention and usage-based estimation suit the workload

Axiom documents 30-day retention on the free Personal plan and configurable retention for Axiom Cloud and BYOC. Since the available cost characterization comes from Axiom itself and describes several usage dimensions, compare a calculator estimate against the other vendors’ estimates without treating Axiom’s positioning as an independent savings result.

Consider Better Stack when its ingestion and SQL workflow match your stack

Better Stack’s published model exposes ingestion, retention, and scanned-query prices, while standard querying is listed as included. Its described Vector, Syslog, and OpenTelemetry collection paths, VRL transformations, SQL-over-HTTP API, and source-level retention settings give a concrete set of integration requirements to verify in a trial or account review. Validate the desired cluster region and any bundle’s exact allowance before choosing it.

Make the final shortlist testable

Keep two or three candidates that meet the non-negotiable requirements for region, retention, searchability, and security. For each, estimate the same current workload and growth case, then validate a representative workflow with your own log format: ingest a sample, redact or transform a sensitive field if needed, search an incident-like event, and confirm how long the data remains available. This is a practical evaluation plan, not a claim that one service has been tested or is universally easier.
