You can communicate without speaking by switching to gestures or signs, writing, texting, or a phone or tablet that reads typed words aloud. The best choice depends on what you can physically use, whether the other person can see a screen or note, how much you need to say, and whether audible output is important. Keep at least one method that works without a battery, then add a digital option for longer or repeated conversations.

Start with a two-layer communication plan

When your voice disappears, do not wait for one perfect replacement. Set up a method that works immediately and a second method for situations in which the first is inconvenient.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Choose a visible, no-power method. Use hand gestures, familiar signs, paper, a notebook, a whiteboard, or the notes app on a phone. This gives you a way to communicate if your battery is low, your device is inaccessible, or you are speaking with someone who cannot use your preferred app.
  2. Choose a longer-message method. Texting, typing in a notes app, or using text-to-speech is usually more practical when you need to explain something, repeat information, or communicate with someone who is not close enough to read a small note.
  3. Tell people what is happening. A short written message such as “I cannot speak today; please read my messages” prevents a listener from interpreting silence as unwillingness or confusion.
  4. Save essential phrases. Prepare messages for your name, contact details, questions, directions, requests for help, and any information you may need to repeat.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is the broad term for these approaches. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) includes unaided methods such as gestures and manual signs, and aided methods such as writing, communication boards, phones, tablets, texting, text-to-speech, and speech-generating devices. AAC can be used temporarily, including during acute laryngitis; it is not limited to people with a permanent disability.

Pick the method that fits the moment

There is no universal “best” substitute for speech. Select a method according to your abilities, the communication partner, and the setting. The following comparison is a practical way to make that choice; it is not a clinical ranking or a result from a head-to-head trial.

Method Works best when Advantages Limitations to plan for
Gestures or manual signs The message is simple and the other person can watch you No equipment, battery, or writing skill required Meaning can be ambiguous; unfamiliar signs may not be understood
Paper, notebook, or whiteboard You are face to face and need a visible record Low-tech, quick to show, and usable without charging Writing takes time and may be hard to read in poor light or for people with limited hand control
Phone notes or texting You need complete sentences, privacy, or communication at a distance Easy to edit, save, copy, and send; useful for repeated messages Requires a charged, accessible device and a reader who can view the text
Text-to-speech People need to hear the message, or reading a screen is impractical Produces audible output and can speak longer messages Needs a device, power, suitable software, and a way to enter text
Communication app or speech-generating device You communicate frequently or need organized, reusable vocabulary Can store phrases and support more complex conversations Setup and learning take time; access needs vary by person and context

ASHA advises considering a person’s strengths and needs together with the communication context when selecting AAC. In practice, a person who can type but cannot hold a pen may prefer a phone; someone without a charged phone may rely on a board; someone who can neither write nor type may need gestures, signs, or another access method.

Use gestures and signs for fast, simple exchanges

Make gestures predictable

Gestures are useful for immediate needs such as “yes,” “no,” “wait,” “come here,” “I need help,” or indicating an object. Agree on a small set of signals with the people around you. A clear head movement, a raised hand, or pointing can be faster than composing a message.

Do not assume a gesture has the same meaning for everyone. Confirm important information by pointing to written choices or asking the listener to show what they understood. For example, point to a written “yes/no” question rather than relying on a thumbs-up that might be misread.

Use manual signs when both people know them

Manual signs can support more detailed communication when you and your conversation partner share a sign system. If the other person does not know the signs, combine them with writing, pointing, or a typed explanation. AAC includes manual signs as an unaided option, so using signs temporarily during voice loss is a legitimate communication strategy.

Keep a written confirmation for critical details

Names, numbers, addresses, medication instructions, appointment times, and other consequential information should be shown in writing or typed even when gestures seem sufficient. Written confirmation reduces the chance that a listener will guess incorrectly.

Make writing work in real conversations

Start with a large, reusable explanation

Write one sentence that can be shown repeatedly:

I have temporarily lost my voice. Please read what I write or type and give me time to respond.

Keep this message on the first page of a notebook or in a pinned note on your phone. A larger font or high-contrast writing is easier to read when the conversation is busy or lighting is poor.

Use a question-and-answer format

For short interactions, write the question you need answered and leave space for the other person to respond. Checkboxes or numbered choices reduce the amount you must write. For example:

Choose the simplest physical tool available

A paper pad, notebook, existing office board, or small dry-erase whiteboard can all serve as low-tech communication aids. ASHA specifically identifies writing and whiteboards as low-tech AAC options. You do not need to purchase a dedicated board; use what is already accessible. If you do keep a small board, store a marker with it and check that the writing can be erased and read easily.

Plan for privacy and hand fatigue

Writing in public can expose information to people nearby, while a phone note can be angled toward one person. If writing becomes tiring, switch to short keywords, numbered choices, or typing. The goal is understandable communication, not complete sentences in every exchange.

Use your phone for longer or remote communication

Text people before they call

Send a short text to family, coworkers, schools, or service providers explaining that you cannot speak and prefer text. This prevents an unanswered call from becoming a communication failure. If someone calls anyway, reply with a text rather than repeatedly attempting to speak.

Keep a pinned note with essential information

Create a note containing your explanation, common requests, directions to your location, and questions you ask often. Pin or favorite it so it opens quickly. Keep the wording concise and update details such as an address when they change.

Use text-to-speech when sound is more useful than a screen

Phones and tablets can convert typed text into audible speech through built-in accessibility features or communication apps. This is useful when a listener cannot see your screen, when you need to address a group, or when reading every message would be impractical. Test the volume and output before you need it, and position the device so the listener can hear without requiring you to repeat the message.

Prepare for battery or connectivity problems

Phone-based communication requires a charged, accessible device. Keep paper or a board as a backup, and save critical messages locally rather than depending entirely on an internet connection. A low-tech fallback is especially important when traveling, waiting in a public place, or dealing with a damaged device.

Use AAC apps and speech-generating devices thoughtfully

When a simple note is enough

For a short episode of voice loss, a notes app, texting, or basic text-to-speech may be faster to set up than a specialized AAC system. Use the least complicated tool that meets the immediate need, while keeping a no-power backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When organized vocabulary helps

If you expect frequent or extended communication, an AAC app or speech-generating device can organize words and phrases into selectable buttons. Reusable phrases reduce typing and make conversations more consistent. Configure the tool around your actual routines rather than filling it with vocabulary you will not use.

Get professional help when access is difficult

ASHA says speech-language pathologists (SLPs) can help people acquire and use AAC or other assistive technology. An SLP can help match the access method to your strengths and needs, including how you enter text, see a screen, hear generated speech, or communicate with different partners. Professional support is particularly useful when voice loss occurs alongside other communication or movement difficulties.

ASHA reports that approximately 5 million Americans and 97 million people worldwide may benefit from AAC, citing Beukelman and Light (2020). It also reports that 18.2% of students needing communication support in a U.S. national survey used some form of AAC, citing Andzik and colleagues (2018). These figures describe broad AAC populations; they are not estimates of how many people temporarily lose their voices.

Adapt the method to the setting

At home

Tell household members where your communication note, paper, and marker are kept. Agree on signals for urgent attention, yes/no answers, and requests that recur during the day. Place the phone or board within reach so you do not have to search for it while trying to communicate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At work or school

Notify the people who need to know and state your preferred channel: text, email, a shared chat, typed notes, or text-to-speech. For meetings, send questions in advance or use a shared document so others can read them. Ask the group to pause after each message rather than prompting you to force out a spoken answer.

In shops, restaurants, and public services

Open with the explanatory note, then show one request at a time. Typing a complete order or question can be clearer than pointing at several items. If staff cannot read your screen from a distance, use larger text or text-to-speech.

On the telephone

A voice call may not be workable while you cannot speak. Use text messaging, email, or a supported relay or communication service available in your region if you already use one. Do not repeatedly attempt to force a voice through a call; switch to a channel that carries your message reliably.

With children or unfamiliar listeners

Show the same short explanation each time and use concrete choices. Children may interpret silence as a game or may not understand why your voice changed. A visual card, typed sentence, or text-to-speech output gives them a consistent explanation.

Make communication accessible to your own abilities

Voice loss does not automatically mean writing or typing will be easy. Consider each part of the exchange:

  • Vision: Increase text size and contrast, or use audible text-to-speech when reading a screen is tiring.
  • Hearing: If you cannot hear generated speech clearly, rely on visible text, captions, or a written exchange.
  • Environment: Bright sunlight, darkness, noise, and distance can change which method works. A screen that is readable indoors may not be visible outside.
  • Conversation length: Gestures and keywords can handle a quick request; typing or stored phrases is more practical for explanations and repeated interactions.

These choices follow ASHA’s principle that AAC selection should account for both the individual and the communication context. Reassess the method when the setting or your physical abilities change.

Protect your voice while you recover

If your voice loss is related to laryngitis, the National Health Service says it usually clears within one to two weeks and advises speaking as little as possible. MedlinePlus states that voice rest helps reduce inflammation of the vocal cords. Switching to AAC lets you reduce voice use without losing the ability to communicate.

Do not compensate by shouting or repeatedly attempting to force speech. Use text, writing, gestures, or text-to-speech instead. The available guidance supports reducing voice use during laryngitis; it does not establish a detailed recommendation about every form of altered speech, so choose communication that avoids straining your voice.

Temporary AAC is not a sign that your communication has failed. It is a practical way to meet daily needs while the underlying problem settles or while you arrange professional advice.

Know when to seek professional care

ASHA’s 2026 voice-health guidance identifies several reasons to seek professional care: hoarseness lasting longer than two weeks, pain or discomfort when speaking or singing, and difficulty projecting the voice. The same guidance says that if symptoms last more than a few weeks, professional evaluation is important.

These time frames are different from the NHS’s general statement that laryngitis often resolves within one to two weeks. If your symptoms persist beyond that expected period, worsen, or include the warning signs above, contact a qualified health professional rather than relying indefinitely on self-management. Continue using an accessible communication method while arranging care.

Troubleshoot common communication failures

People keep asking you to repeat yourself

Stop trying to make a weak voice carry farther. Show the explanatory note first, then use larger typed text, writing, or text-to-speech. Ask the listener to read the message back or point to the option they understood.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your phone battery is low

Switch to paper, a notebook, or a whiteboard before the device shuts down. Keep the essential explanation and a few requests written in your backup so you are not dependent on the phone.

The other person cannot read your screen

Increase the text size, turn the screen toward the listener, write on paper, or use text-to-speech. Distance and lighting matter as much as the app itself.

You need to communicate with several people

Use a reusable written announcement, group text, email, shared document, or audible text-to-speech. Sending one clear message prevents each person from receiving a different explanation.

You cannot write or type comfortably

Use gestures, manual signs, pointing, or a communication partner who can present yes/no and multiple-choice questions. If this is an ongoing access problem, ask an SLP about AAC and assistive technology options matched to your abilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A message is too important to risk misunderstanding

Use two channels: type the message and have the listener confirm it, or show the written version while using text-to-speech. This is especially useful for names, numbers, times, locations, and instructions.

Build a small “no-voice” kit

A useful kit does not need specialized equipment. Assemble items that match your routine:

  • A phone or tablet with a pinned explanation and text-to-speech enabled if you use it.
  • Paper or a small notebook and a pen that you can use comfortably.
  • An optional dry-erase whiteboard and marker; ASHA lists whiteboards as low-tech AAC, but ordinary paper or an existing board works too.
  • Saved phrases for introductions, requests, directions, and asking someone to wait.
  • A short note telling people whether you prefer text, writing, gestures, or audible output.

Test the kit before you need it. Make sure the marker writes, the device is charged, the text is large enough to read, and the people closest to you know the plan.

What to remember

Losing your voice changes the output channel, not your ability to participate in a conversation. Start with gestures or writing when you need an immediate, low-tech solution. Move to texting, a notes app, or text-to-speech for longer, remote, or audible communication. Keep a backup that does not depend on power, choose tools around your actual access needs, and reduce voice use while laryngitis recovers. Persistent hoarseness, pain or discomfort with speaking or singing, or difficulty projecting warrants professional care according to ASHA’s 2026 guidance.
