Build the combined view by exporting or querying both datasets, standardizing their dimensions, and joining them in a spreadsheet, database, or dashboard. Keep unmatched rows visible and label each row by its source so readers can tell search-demand data from ad-combination data.
What each Google Ads report actually measures
The two reports answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

| Surface | Question answered | Important fields | Documented access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search-term or search-term-insight reporting | What searches or search-demand categories brought traffic into the campaign? | Campaign, date, search term or category, clicks, cost, conversions and other metrics when available | Google Ads interface export or the campaign_search_term_insight API resource |
| Responsive search-ad combinations report | Which headline and description combinations were served, and how many impressions did each receive? | Campaign, ad group, ad, served headline assets, served description assets and impressions | Google Ads interface export or the ad_group_ad_asset_combination_view API resource |
Responsive search ads can contain up to 15 headlines and four descriptions. Google assembles eligible combinations, adapts them to customer searches and learns which combinations are most relevant over time. The combinations report records combinations that actually served and the impressions they received; it is not a list of guaranteed future ad variants.

The practical design for a unified report
Use one row at the finest grain your data supports: an observed search-term or search-demand category, an observed RSA combination, and a date, with campaign and ad-group identifiers carried through. Because the two reports may aggregate differently, a search-term row will not always map to one combination row. Do not force a one-to-one match when the source data does not provide it.
#1 Best Overall
Include these columns wherever the selected report or API resource supplies them:
- Campaign ID and campaign name
- Ad-group ID and ad-group name
- Ad ID and the responsive-ad resource
- Date and reporting time zone
- Search term or search-term category
- Served headline assets and served description assets
- Impressions, clicks, cost, conversions and conversion value
- Efficiency measures such as cost per conversion, calculated only when their denominator is valid

Metric availability depends on the API resource, account configuration, conversion setup and selected date range. Preserve the original source values instead of filling unavailable fields with zero.

Step-by-step: create the combined report from exports
- Choose a common date range. Record the account time zone, start date, end date and currency. Use the same reporting scope for both exports.
- Export search-demand data. In Google Ads, open the search-term or search-term-insight reporting surface and download CSV or PDF. CSV is preferable for joining. The API alternative is
campaign_search_term_insight; Google’s field reference states that historical data is available from March 2023. - Export RSA combinations. Open the responsive search-ad combinations report and download CSV. The API alternative is
ad_group_ad_asset_combination_view, which exposes served assets and impression metrics. - Keep the identifiers. Do not join on campaign names or ad text alone. Retain campaign ID, ad-group ID, ad ID, date and the responsive-ad resource wherever they appear.
- Normalize names and types. Convert dates to one format, trim text fields, use consistent currency units and store IDs as text if leading zeroes are possible. Rename equivalent metrics consistently, such as
impressions, clicksandcost. - Join only on shared dimensions. Match rows using the dimensions present in both extracts, normally campaign, ad group, ad or responsive-ad resource, and date. If a dimension is absent from one source, aggregate the more detailed source to the common grain before joining.
- Retain exceptions. Keep search-term rows with no matching combination and combination rows with no matching search-term data in a separate exception section. A missing match can reflect different aggregation, privacy thresholds, eligibility or date coverage; silently deleting it biases the report.
- Publish both detail and totals. Show the joined detail for analysis and separate campaign, ad-group and date totals for reconciliation against Google Ads.
Using the Google Ads API instead
An API pipeline is preferable when the report must refresh repeatedly or cover many accounts. Query campaign_search_term_insight for search-demand data and ad_group_ad_asset_combination_view for served RSA combinations. Store the API version, extraction timestamp and date range with every load because field availability and interface labels can change.

The ad-level asset documentation indicates that full performance statistics for the asset report are available for dates on or after June 5, 2025. That cutoff applies to the documented asset-report statistics; it does not automatically make every historical field available in every account. Test the requested fields against the account and API version before designing a permanent schema.

How to analyze the joined data
Use the combined view to compare demand and creative, not to claim that one combination caused an outcome. Useful cuts include:
- Search intent or category versus served headline and description text
- Impressions and clicks by combination
- Cost and conversions by campaign, ad group and date
- Conversion value and cost per conversion where conversion tracking is configured
- Share of observed demand associated with each asset combination
A high-impression combination proves that it was served often in the selected reporting scope. It does not prove that the combination produced a conversion or outperformed alternatives. Attribution depends on the account’s conversion actions, attribution model, date range, bidding conditions and other campaign factors.
Important limitations of the combinations report
“The combinations report shouldn’t be used to create static versions of responsive search ads because they’re not guaranteed to perform the same as your ads.” — Google Ads Help
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Served combinations are observations from a responsive system that continues to select and test assets. Copying a frequently observed combination into a static ad removes that adaptive behavior and does not reproduce the original auction conditions. Treat the report as evidence of delivery, not as a controlled creative experiment.
Quality checks before sharing the dashboard
- Reconcile impression, click and cost totals to the corresponding Google Ads views for the same date range.
- Check that campaign and ad-group IDs, rather than names, drive joins.
- Confirm whether dates use the account time zone and whether costs use the account currency.
- Flag privacy-threshold, low-volume or otherwise suppressed search-term rows instead of interpreting them as zero demand.
- Record the API version and the extraction date in the dashboard.
- Show the source view on every row so users understand whether a value came from search-demand reporting or combination reporting.
This structure gives analysts a defensible connection between the searches entering an auction and the RSA assets that were observed serving, while preserving the aggregation and attribution limits of each Google Ads data source.
