AI tools can speed up the repetitive first pass of video color work: normalizing supported camera footage and correcting basic exposure, white balance, and contrast. They do not reliably replace shot matching or creative grading. A fast, dependable workflow is to set the footage’s color interpretation and delivery target, apply automatic correction, match adjacent shots, then add the creative look and check the export.
What AI can—and cannot—speed up
Color correction establishes a technically usable baseline, such as balanced exposure and white balance. Creative grading shapes the finished look. Adobe describes Auto Color as a correction step that typically comes before creative grading; it uses Adobe Sensei machine learning and leaves its adjustments editable in Lumetri’s Basic Correction controls. Adobe’s Auto Color guide, last updated August 18, 2026, documents the feature and workflow.

That makes automation useful for a first pass across footage, not a guaranteed finished grade. The reviewed official sources do not establish a particular time saving, accuracy rate, or ability to finish every project without human review.

Identify the footage and delivery target
Determine whether your footage is log/raw or already display-referred, and whether the final video is intended for SDR or HDR. In Premiere, Color Management automatically transforms most supported log and raw camera files to an SDR or HDR working/output pipeline. Some formats, proxies, or purchased log footage may need their color space tagged. Adobe’s Premiere Color Management documentation describes the supported workflow.

Normalize the image before correcting it
Make sure the camera footage is being interpreted for the intended color space before judging its appearance. If automatic color management is handling the transform, do not stack an unrelated LUT on top without checking the result. A creative LUT is not a universal substitute for camera normalization, and it cannot by itself fix mismatched exposure.
-
Apply automatic correction as a starting point
In Premiere, open Window > Lumetri Color, then select Auto under Basic Corrections. Adobe says Auto Color adjusts exposure, white balance, and contrast, and can be used with source footage including log footage and footage with LUTs applied. Inspect the resulting Basic Correction sliders and adjust them individually; use the overall Intensity control to reduce or increase the effect. The result remains editable rather than locked.

Match neighboring shots before adding style
Review shots in sequence, especially cuts between different cameras, lighting conditions, or locations. Compare brightness, neutral colors, and skin tones. Correct inconsistencies before applying a look; a style treatment can make a mismatch more obvious rather than solve it.

Add the creative look after the baseline is sound
Use curves, selective adjustments, or a look only after exposure, white balance, and continuity are acceptable. Keeping the correction editable makes it easier to revise the balance without rebuilding the grade.

Check representative shots in the export
Review a sample of the finished export on a reliable display and confirm that the export settings match the intended SDR or HDR delivery. Software features cannot guarantee that every display or export will reproduce color identically.
Choose a tool based on your footage and workflow
These options address different parts of the job. Automatic color management handles input interpretation; automatic correction offers a first-pass balance; grading workspaces provide hands-on creative control.

| Option | Documented strengths | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premiere Auto Color with Lumetri | Machine-learning correction for exposure, white balance, and contrast; editable sliders and overall intensity; works on source footage, including log and LUT-treated footage. | You already edit in Premiere and want an adjustable first-pass correction. | It is a correction starting point, not an automatic final creative look. |
| Premiere Color Management | Automatically transforms most supported log and raw camera formats, with SDR/HDR options and an ACEScct wide-gamut working color space. | You need to normalize supported log/raw footage for the intended delivery pipeline. | Some formats, proxies, and purchased log footage may need color-space tagging. |
| Premiere Color Mode beta | A separate grading workspace with controls and grade management; Adobe’s page says it is available in Premiere beta for plans that include Premiere. | You can access the beta and want grading tools in the same application as your edit. | Availability and interface status can change. Check the current version and access before relying on it; Lumetri effects remain available in beta, but the Lumetri panel is unavailable there. |
| DaVinci Resolve | A dedicated color page, color management, RAW processing, and HDR grading tools. | You need a dedicated grading environment or RAW/HDR capabilities and Resolve fits your pipeline. | Its broader control set can require additional learning. The manufacturer’s feature descriptions do not establish comparative grading-speed results. |
Adobe’s Color Mode page, accessed October 7, 2026, describes the separate beta workspace. Adobe’s April 2025 Color Management announcement and documentation describes its pipeline. Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve color page, accessed October 7, 2026, outlines Resolve’s grading tools. Compare the options by supported footage and color management, shot-matching needs, SDR/HDR delivery, integration with your current edit, and the degree of manual control you want—not by an assumed speed ranking.

- Check exposure and white balance across the whole sequence, not just the first corrected frame.
- Look for continuity in skin tones and neutral colors across cuts.
- Inspect highlights and shadows after correction and after the creative look.
- Confirm the final export’s color-space settings for the intended SDR or HDR destination.
Automation can reduce repetitive adjustments, but it does not establish that shots from different cameras or lighting conditions match, or that the result suits the intended style. Treat the automated pass as a way to reach review and refinement sooner.
