How to Close a Stuck App in Windows 11—and Stop It Happening Again

If an app is frozen or remains open after you try to exit, first close it normally if it still responds. If it will not close, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the app under Processes in Task Manager, and choose End task. Reopen the app and check whether the problem returns. Ending a task forces it to stop, so save any work you can first.

What does “app process not closing” mean?

It can describe different situations: the app window may be unresponsive, the app may still appear to be running after you close its window, or it may launch again in the background. The steps below address a stuck or unresponsive app. If it repeatedly reopens when you sign in, see the startup-app section instead.

A process remaining active is not, by itself, proof of a Windows fault. Without knowing which app is involved and what it does when you close it, there is no reliable way to identify one universal cause.

How do you force-close the app safely?

  1. Try a normal close first. If the app responds, save your work, close it using its usual close control, then reopen it.
  2. Open Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  3. End the app task. In Processes, select the app you recognize and choose End task.
  4. Reopen and check. Start the app normally and see whether it behaves as expected.

Microsoft describes ending an unresponsive process in its Task Manager and PC performance guidance, and documents closing and reopening as a troubleshooting step for particular apps such as Outlook and Edge. These app-specific instructions are examples, not a guarantee that every program will have identical behavior.

Task Manager also lists background and Windows processes. End only the app you recognize; do not terminate an unfamiliar system process as a way to troubleshoot a stuck app. Because End task is a forceful close, unsaved changes may be lost.

What should you try if the app keeps getting stuck?

Install app and Windows updates

For a Microsoft Store app, first check for Windows updates. Then open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates and install any available app update. Microsoft’s Store-app troubleshooting guidance also recommends closing and reopening the app and checking that it works with Windows 11.

Repair the app in Settings

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the app and open its menu.
  3. Select Advanced options, if shown, then choose Repair.

Microsoft says Repair and Reset are not available for every app. If the option is missing, use the app publisher’s instructions. Some traditional desktop programs instead provide Repair or Change through Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features; availability depends on the program. See Microsoft’s app and program repair guidance.

Consider Reset only after reviewing its effects

If the issue continues and the app offers Reset under Advanced options, read the app’s explanation before using it. Reset can change the app’s state, so preserve anything important and follow any instructions for backing up or syncing app data. The exact effect and available recovery options vary by app.

Reinstall or contact the app publisher

If updates and available repair options do not help, Microsoft’s Store-app troubleshooting sequence includes uninstalling and reinstalling the app. For persistent trouble—especially in a desktop program—follow the publisher’s current support instructions. An isolated app that will not close is not, on its own, a reason to reset or reinstall Windows.

Is the app stuck, or does it just start automatically?

If the app launches whenever you sign in, manage its startup entry instead of trying to end a process that is not currently stuck. In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Startup, or use Task Manager > Startup apps, and turn off the entry you do not want to launch automatically. Microsoft explains these options in its startup-app guidance. Disabling startup controls sign-in behavior; it does not close an app that is already running.
