To close one Selenium tab, switch WebDriver to that tab and call driver.close(). If you want to keep using the browser session, switch to a different tab that is still open. Use driver.quit() only when you intend to end the whole session.
Close one tab and keep the session open
Selenium’s close() command closes the currently selected window context: the tab or window WebDriver is controlling at that moment. It does not choose another tab for you. Store the handle of a tab you want to return to, close the selected tab, then switch back to the stored handle.
original = driver.current_window_handle
# First switch to the tab you intend to close, if it is not already selected.

# Continue on a tab that is still open.
driver.switch_to.window(original)This Python example assumes original identifies a tab that remains open and that WebDriver is controlling the tab to be closed when close() runs. The official Selenium windows and tabs guide recommends closing a finished tab when another remains, then switching back to the window previously in use.
When a new tab was opened
Keep the original handle before opening or switching to another tab. When you are ready to close the new tab, make sure it is the selected context; after closing it, switch back to the original handle. Do not rely on tab order to identify which one to keep.

Python example with multiple tabs
This example records the current tab, identifies a newly opened tab by its handle, closes that selected tab, and returns to the original. It assumes the page or test has already caused a second tab to open.

driver.switch_to.window(original)Handle sets are useful when a test opens a tab dynamically, but if several tabs may open, identify the intended handle using your test’s expected page or application state rather than arbitrarily choosing one.

Java syntax
The Java binding uses camel case for switching window contexts. The same rule applies: close the selected context, then switch to a handle that is still valid.

After close(), switch to a remaining handle before issuing ordinary page commands. Selenium’s guide warns that continuing to use the closed context can raise a No Such Window Exception.

Troubleshoot tab-closing errors
No Such Window Exception after closing
The driver is still associated with the context that was closed, or the handle you tried to switch to is no longer open. Switch to a valid remaining handle. If no tabs remain, there is no open page to resume; finish session cleanup with driver.quit().
The wrong tab closed
close() acts on the selected context, not a tab identified by its position or title. Check the current handle, switch to the intended handle, and only then call close(). Keep the return handle explicitly so you can restore the correct context afterward.

The original handle is no longer valid
The example can switch back only if the original tab remains open. If the tab was closed, select another handle from the currently open window handles; if none remain, end the session instead of attempting more page commands.

Selenium’s guide identifies its new-window functionality as available in Selenium 4 and later. The close-and-switch principle applies across bindings, although method names differ: Python uses driver.close() and driver.switch_to.window(handle); Java uses driver.close() and driver.switchTo().window(handle). Consult the guide for the syntax and examples relevant to your binding.
