Clonezilla’s disk-to-disk clone erases the selected destination drive. Back up important files first, verify which disk is the source and which is the target, and stop at both confirmation prompts until you are certain the target is the drive you intend to erase. After cloning, disconnect either the original or the clone before booting.
Before you start: protect your data and identify the disks
- Back up important data separately. A clone is not a safe substitute for a separate backup, because choosing the wrong target can erase its existing contents.
- Prepare the destination drive. Connect it internally if your computer has an available drive bay, or use an external enclosure and cable that match the drive. Check your computer and drive specifications before choosing hardware; the Clonezilla guide does not specify modern form factors or interface compatibility.
- Boot Clonezilla Live from separate media. Prepare a Clonezilla Live USB or CD. Keep the boot media distinct from the destination drive you may overwrite.
- Make the physical setup easy to recognize. Note which drive is the original and which is the destination before booting. At Clonezilla’s disk lists, compare the displayed drive information, including capacity, with the setup you prepared. Do not identify a disk by a device name such as
sdaorsdbalone; those are examples, not fixed identities.
Clonezilla’s official disk-to-disk guide warns that all data on the selected target disk will be overwritten.
Clone disk to disk with Clonezilla Live
- Boot the computer from Clonezilla Live media.
- Choose Start Clonezilla.
- Select device-device to clone directly from one disk to another.
- Select Beginner.
- Choose disk_to_local_disk.
- At the source-disk list, select the original drive. Check the displayed disk information against the drive you identified before starting.
- At the target-disk list, select the destination. Stop and verify its displayed information and physical connection before proceeding: the target’s existing data will be erased.
- Read both confirmation prompts. Continue only if the selected source and target are correct and you accept erasing the target’s contents.
- Wait for the cloning operation to finish, then shut down the computer.
The two confirmation prompts are deliberate safety stops, not a reason to rush through the workflow. If you cannot positively distinguish the disks, cancel rather than guessing.
What happens when the destination is larger?
Clonezilla’s guide says its documented default copies the same size of data as the source layout, leaving the rest of a larger target unused. Its example uses a 20 GB source with 8 GB of data and a 60 GB target; those figures illustrate the behavior, not a recommended drive size or a measured benchmark.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The guide documents the -k1 option to adjust the partition layout to use the larger target’s capacity. If using the full destination size matters, check the Clonezilla options for the workflow you are running before starting; do not assume that a larger disk will automatically be filled.
After cloning: disconnect one disk before booting
When Clonezilla finishes, shut down and disconnect either the original source or the new clone before starting the operating system. The source and clone can have identical filesystem UUIDs, which may confuse the operating system if both remain connected at boot. Keep the drive you are not booting disconnected until you have confirmed which disk you want to use.
