How to Clear Your Amazon Browsing History and Recommendations

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon separates viewed-item history, store recommendations, personalized advertising, and future browsing privacy into different controls. To remove products from the list of items you viewed, use Your Browsing History. To stop a viewed product from being used as a recommendation input, use Improve Your Recommendations and turn off “Use this item for recommendations” for that item. Personalized advertising is managed separately through Your Ads Privacy Choices. Signing out and blocking cookies addresses future account linking, but can disable cart, checkout, and sign-in features.

The account pages and their labels can change. Amazon’s linked pages were returning HTTP 503 errors when checked, so this guide identifies the controls Amazon documents without inventing unverified button names or promising a particular bulk-clear option.

Choose the control that matches what you want to change

“Clear my Amazon history” can mean several different things. Amazon’s US Privacy Notice treats these settings separately, so changing one does not automatically change the others.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Your goal Amazon control What it changes What it does not establish
Remove products from the list of things you viewed Your Browsing History Lets you edit the viewed-item history shown in your account It does not delete orders, purchase history, or every record Amazon may retain
Stop a viewed product being used as a store-recommendation input Improve Your Recommendations Lets you manage recommendation inputs; Amazon documents a per-item “Use this item for recommendations” toggle It does not guarantee that all recommendation influence disappears immediately
Change personalized advertising preferences Your Ads Privacy Choices Controls the advertising-preference route identified by Amazon It is not the browsing-history editor or the store-recommendation manager
Reduce the chance that new browsing is tied to your account Sign out and block browser cookies Separates future browsing from the signed-in account to the extent Amazon describes Blocking cookies can prevent cart, checkout, and sign-in functions

Start with the row that matches your outcome. If you want both a cleaner viewed-items list and fewer recommendations based on a product, perform the first two tasks separately.

What Amazon officially documents

Amazon.com’s US Privacy Notice, last updated June 30, 2026, identifies Your Browsing History as the account area where customers can edit browsing history. The notice states: “You can edit Your Browsing History, as well.” It separately identifies Improve Your Recommendations for managing recommendation inputs and describes removing an item by unchecking “Use this item for recommendations” on that item’s page.

The same notice points customers to Your Ads Privacy Choices for personalized advertising preferences. It also lists purchase and order history separately from the editable browsing-history control. That distinction matters: deleting or hiding a viewed item is not the same as deleting an order or asking Amazon to erase all information associated with an account.

Before you start: identify the result you need

Write down what you expect to change before opening settings. If a product is merely visible in the viewed-items list, the browsing-history editor is the relevant place. If the product is appearing in “recommended for you” or similar store suggestions, the recommendation manager is the relevant place. If the concern is an ad shown on Amazon or elsewhere, use the advertising-preference route. If you want future activity kept separate from your account, the documented approach is to sign out and block cookies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These goals can overlap. A gift search, for example, may need both a history edit and a recommendation-input change. Treat each as a separate task and verify each in its own area. Do not assume that removing an item from one page automatically removes it from the other.

Remove or edit products in Your Browsing History

Use this route when the problem is the visible list of products you have viewed, such as a gift you no longer want appearing in your account’s history.

  1. Open Amazon while signed in to the account whose history you want to change. Use the account area rather than a search-engine result that may open a different regional site or a signed-out page.
  2. Go to Your Browsing History. Amazon’s Privacy Notice confirms that this is the page for editing viewed-item history. The exact placement of the link can vary by device, region, and current account layout.
  3. Find the product you want to remove or edit. Use the controls currently displayed beside or on the item. Because the live page’s current layout was not available for verification, do not rely on a particular button label or assume a bulk-clear control exists.
  4. Apply the available removal or editing control. If Amazon presents a confirmation, complete it and allow the page to refresh.
  5. Check the history page again. Confirm that the item no longer appears in the list, if the page indicates that the edit succeeded.

Amazon documents the page’s editing function, but not a guaranteed current click sequence, universal “clear all” command, or specific behavior for every device. If you do not see a bulk option, remove entries using the controls the page actually provides rather than treating an unverified shortcut as a supported feature.

What this edit does not erase

  • Orders and purchase history: Amazon lists purchase and order history separately from browsing history.
  • Every Amazon-held record: Removing a viewed item from the browsing-history view is not a promise that all related account information is deleted.
  • Every recommendation input: A history edit and the recommendation controls are separate account functions.
  • Advertising preferences: Personalized ads use the separate Your Ads Privacy Choices route.

Stop a viewed product from feeding store recommendations

Use Improve Your Recommendations when you still see suggestions associated with something you viewed and want to remove that product as a recommendation input. This is a different task from editing the visible browsing-history list.

  1. Open the account area and select Improve Your Recommendations. Amazon identifies this page as the place to manage store recommendations.
  2. Locate the product that should no longer be used. The page may present products and their recommendation settings in a layout that changes over time.
  3. Open that item’s recommendation control. Amazon’s notice specifically describes the setting “Use this item for recommendations.”
  4. Uncheck “Use this item for recommendations.” Amazon says that unchecking this option removes the item from recommendation inputs as described in the notice.
  5. Repeat for other products if necessary. The documented control is per item, so do not assume that changing one product changes every viewed item.

The current live page was unavailable to verify, so the location of the checkbox, any save action, and the way Amazon confirms the change may differ. Follow the labels and prompts displayed in your account.

Why a recommendation may not disappear immediately

Amazon’s documented control removes the selected item from recommendation inputs; it does not promise an instant reset of every suggestion or explain a universal refresh interval. A recommendation that remains visible does not by itself prove that the toggle failed. Reopen Improve Your Recommendations, verify that the item is no longer marked for use, and then revisit the recommendation surface later. Avoid claiming that clearing one browsing-history entry removes every possible influence, because Amazon’s notice does not establish that outcome.

Change personalized advertising preferences

If your concern is targeted advertising rather than products shown inside Amazon’s store, use Your Ads Privacy Choices. Amazon identifies this as the route for personalized advertising preferences.

  1. Open your Amazon account settings.
  2. Go to Your Ads Privacy Choices. Use the advertising-preference controls presented there.
  3. Review the available choice and submit it if Amazon asks for confirmation. Current labels and options can change, so use the wording shown on the page.

This setting should not be treated as a replacement for editing Your Browsing History or changing recommendation inputs in Improve Your Recommendations. Those controls address different account functions. Likewise, changing an advertising preference is not a promise that every advertisement will stop or that all store recommendations will change.

Prevent future browsing from being linked to the account

Amazon’s Privacy Notice describes a separate approach for people who want to browse without linking that activity to their account: sign out and block browser cookies.

  1. Sign out of Amazon before browsing. Confirm that the browser is no longer showing the account as signed in.
  2. Block Amazon cookies in the browser’s privacy settings. Use the browser’s own cookie controls and apply them to the Amazon site or the relevant regional domain.
  3. Browse without signing back in. If you sign in again, the account-linking issue returns for that session.

Amazon warns that rejecting cookies can prevent use of the cart, checkout, or sign-in functions. This is therefore a privacy trade-off, not a harmless “incognito” switch. If you need to purchase something, you may have to restore the cookie setting and sign in; doing so can associate that activity with the account again.

History, recommendations, ads, and cookies: the practical differences

The four controls differ in scope, timing, and trade-offs:

  • Browsing history is a record view: it edits the list of products associated with viewed-item history in the account area.
  • Recommendations are input controls: the documented checkbox determines whether a selected item is used as a recommendation input. It is not described as a command to delete all recommendation data.
  • Advertising choices concern ads: they are managed through a dedicated privacy-choice page, not through either history page.
  • Cookie blocking changes future linkage: it applies to subsequent browsing while signed out, but Amazon warns that essential shopping functions may stop working.

For that reason, a single “clear everything” expectation is misleading. You may need to complete two or three actions, and the result of each action should be checked against the specific page it controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this decision path when you are unsure

  • The item appears in your viewed-products list: Open Your Browsing History and use the editing controls shown there.
  • The item is influencing store recommendations: Open Improve Your Recommendations and uncheck “Use this item for recommendations” for that product.
  • The concern is targeted advertising: Open Your Ads Privacy Choices.
  • You want to avoid linking new browsing to the account: Sign out and block cookies, accepting the possible loss of cart, checkout, and sign-in functions.
  • You want orders removed: The documented browsing-history control is not an order-history deletion tool. Amazon lists orders and purchases separately.

Troubleshoot missing controls and page errors

The page will not load

The linked Amazon account pages returned HTTP 503 errors when checked. A 503 usually means the page is temporarily unavailable rather than that your account lacks the feature. Try again later, use the Amazon site for the country associated with your account, and sign in before opening the account area. Do not substitute a third-party “history cleaner” that asks for your Amazon password.

The menu name is different

Amazon can change navigation labels and page placement. Search within Amazon’s account or privacy settings for the exact control names Your Browsing History, Improve Your Recommendations, and Your Ads Privacy Choices. If a mobile app does not show one of these pages, try a browser session; the documented function is tied to the account page, not to a guaranteed app layout.

You cannot find a clear-all option

Amazon’s notice confirms that browsing history can be edited but does not establish that every account has a universal bulk-clear button. Remove the entries using the controls your page supplies. Do not infer that the absence of a bulk button means the individual edit failed.

The product still appears in recommendations

Return to Improve Your Recommendations and check the item’s “Use this item for recommendations” setting. If it is unchecked, Amazon’s documented action has been applied to that recommendation input, but the notice does not promise an immediate disappearance from every recommendation surface. Editing the browsing-history list separately may also be appropriate if your goal includes hiding the viewed item itself.

You are changing the wrong account

Households often use more than one Amazon account, regional site, or browser profile. Confirm the account identifier shown after sign-in before editing anything. A history page can look empty simply because you opened a different account or marketplace. The documented controls apply to the account page you actually opened, so switching accounts requires repeating the relevant task there.

You need to keep shopping while limiting tracking

Cookie blocking is the option with the clearest functional cost. Amazon specifically warns that rejecting cookies can prevent cart, checkout, or sign-in. If you need those features, use the account controls for history, recommendations, or ads instead of assuming cookie blocking is a complete substitute. You can reserve signed-out, cookie-blocked browsing for research and restore normal settings when you are ready to purchase.

Privacy boundaries to keep in mind

These controls are useful because they let you target a specific outcome, but they are not a single “erase everything Amazon knows” switch. The documented functions have different scopes:

  • History editing changes the viewed-item history page.
  • Recommendation management changes whether selected items are used as recommendation inputs.
  • Ad choices addresses personalized advertising preferences.
  • Cookie blocking while signed out reduces account linkage for future browsing but can break core shopping functions.

Do not promise that one action deletes orders, removes all retained information, instantly resets recommendations, or opts out of every form of advertising. Those outcomes are not established by Amazon’s documented controls.

  1. Decide whether the unwanted item is a history problem, a recommendation problem, an advertising problem, or a future-linking problem.
  2. Edit Your Browsing History for products you no longer want listed as viewed.
  3. Open Improve Your Recommendations and uncheck “Use this item for recommendations” for products that should no longer contribute to store suggestions.
  4. Review Your Ads Privacy Choices if the issue is personalized advertising.
  5. Sign out and block cookies for future unaffiliated browsing, remembering that cart, checkout, and sign-in may stop working.
  6. Verify each result in its own control. A change in one area is not proof that the other areas changed.

Amazon’s Privacy Notice is the governing source for these documented controls and was last updated June 30, 2026. Because account interfaces can change, use the labels and prompts currently displayed on Amazon rather than relying on an assumed menu sequence.

Frequently asked questions

Does clearing Amazon browsing history delete my orders?

No. Amazon lists purchase and order history separately from the editable browsing-history control. Removing a viewed product from Your Browsing History should not be presented as deleting an order, invoice, or purchase record.

Will removing an item from browsing history stop all recommendations about it?

Not necessarily. Amazon documents separate controls for browsing history and recommendation inputs. To stop a selected product from being used as a recommendation input, open Improve Your Recommendations and uncheck “Use this item for recommendations.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a guaranteed “clear all” button?

Amazon’s notice confirms that browsing history can be edited, but it does not establish a universal bulk-clear control. Use whatever individual or bulk controls your current page displays; do not rely on a button name that is not present.

How many products can I remove at once?

The documented notice does not specify a quantity limit or promise a bulk operation. Treat the controls shown on your account page as authoritative and repeat the per-item action when that is the only option available.

Why do I still see a recommendation after unchecking the item?

The notice describes removing the item from recommendation inputs but does not promise an instant refresh or disappearance from every recommendation surface. Recheck the item’s setting, then allow the account’s recommendation displays to update. Editing history separately may also be appropriate.

Does Your Ads Privacy Choices erase my browsing history?

No. Amazon identifies that page for personalized advertising preferences. Browsing-history edits belong in Your Browsing History, and recommendation inputs belong in Improve Your Recommendations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I browse privately and still use my cart?

Amazon says signing out and blocking cookies can avoid linking future browsing to the account, but warns that rejecting cookies may prevent cart, checkout, or sign-in functions. That makes it a trade-off rather than a guarantee of private shopping with full functionality.

Will an incognito window perform the documented Amazon controls?

The documented approach for avoiding account linkage is to sign out and block browser cookies. A private-window label alone is not the control Amazon describes, and you should not treat it as proof that browsing is unlinked.

What if the pages return an error?

The account pages returned HTTP 503 errors when checked. Try again later, confirm you are on the regional Amazon site for your account, and sign in before opening the account area. Never give your password to an unofficial history-cleaning service.

Do these controls apply to every Amazon marketplace?

The cited notice is Amazon.com’s US Privacy Notice. Regional sites can present different navigation or privacy choices, so use the controls and wording shown for the marketplace and account you are actually using.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does clearing Amazon browsing history delete my orders?

No. Amazon lists purchase and order history separately from the editable browsing-history control. Removing a viewed product is not order deletion.

Will removing an item from browsing history stop all recommendations about it?

Not necessarily. Use Improve Your Recommendations and uncheck “Use this item for recommendations” for the product.

Is there a guaranteed clear-all button?

No universal bulk-clear control is established. Use the individual or bulk controls currently displayed on your account page.

Why does a recommendation remain after I uncheck an item?

Amazon does not promise an instant refresh or disappearance from every recommendation surface. Recheck the setting and revisit the page later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Your Ads Privacy Choices erase browsing history?

No. It is the route for personalized advertising preferences, separate from browsing-history and recommendation controls.

Can I browse privately and still use my cart?

Amazon warns that blocking cookies may prevent cart, checkout, and sign-in functions, so private browsing involves a functionality trade-off.

What if Amazon’s settings page returns an error?

A 503 indicates temporary unavailability. Try again later on the correct regional site and avoid third-party services requesting your password.

The Bottom Line

Amazon documents four separate privacy choices: edit viewed products in Your Browsing History; remove a product from recommendation inputs by unchecking “Use this item for recommendations” in Improve Your Recommendations; manage personalized advertising in Your Ads Privacy Choices; and reduce future account linkage by signing out and blocking cookies. Perform the specific task that matches your goal, verify each control independently, and remember that orders, retained account information, instant recommendation resets, and complete advertising opt-outs are not promised by these settings.
