Turn the console off, enter Safe Mode by releasing the power button after the second beep, connect the DualSense with a data-capable USB cable, and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Select Clear System Software Cache for system-feature or performance problems; select Rebuild Database when the content index appears damaged or out of date. Neither maintenance option is a factory reset, so Sony says these actions preserve your games and saved data.
What clearing the cache and rebuilding the database actually do
These are two separate maintenance operations grouped under one Safe Mode menu. Choosing the right one matters because they address different symptoms.

Clear System Software Cache
The cache-clear option removes temporary system software data. Sony recommends it when you are experiencing system-feature issues or performance drops. It is intended to refresh the console’s temporary working data, not to remove installed games, applications, screenshots, video clips, or saved data.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Rebuild Database
Rebuilding scans the PS5’s storage and creates a new database of the content on the system. The database is the index the console uses to organize and display installed games, applications and other content. Sony specifically notes that rebuilding can help when a deleted game icon is still visible on the Home screen.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Rebuilding is not the same as reinstalling a game or reinstalling the PS5 system software. It repairs the content index; it does not intentionally wipe your user data.
Cache clear versus database rebuild
| Safe Mode choice | Use it for | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Clear System Software Cache | System-feature issues or performance drops | Clears temporary system software cache data |
| Rebuild Database | Content-index problems, such as a deleted game icon remaining on Home | Scans the drive and creates a new database of system content |
Sony does not publish a guaranteed performance percentage, success rate or completion time for either operation. Treat them as maintenance tools rather than a promise of a measurable speed increase.
What you need before entering Safe Mode
- A fully powered-off PS5. Rest Mode is not sufficient for the Safe Mode entry sequence.
- A DualSense controller connected by USB. Use a cable that carries data as well as power. A charge-only cable may not let the PS5 detect the controller in Safe Mode.
- Working power, HDMI and USB connections. If Safe Mode fails to appear, these cables are the first things Sony advises checking.
Clearing the cache and rebuilding the database are maintenance actions and are not factory resets. You can still make a current backup before any storage troubleshooting if your saves or media are irreplaceable, but the destructive choices are separate menu items described below.
How to enter PS5 Safe Mode
- Shut the PS5 down completely. Hold the console’s power button for about three seconds. Wait until the power indicator stops blinking before continuing.
- Start the Safe Mode sequence. With the console off, press and hold the power button again. You will hear one beep when you press it and a second beep about seven seconds later. Release the button after the second beep.
- Connect the controller. Plug the DualSense into the PS5 with a data-capable USB cable. Wireless pairing is not the connection method to rely on in this menu.
- Confirm controller input. Press the PS button. The Safe Mode menu should now accept controller commands.
If the console starts normally instead, it was not held long enough for the second beep. Shut it down and repeat the sequence, releasing only after that second tone.

Clear the PS5 system software cache
- Enter Safe Mode using the sequence above.
- Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Select Clear System Software Cache.
- Allow the PS5 to complete the operation and restart. Do not remove power while the console is working.
Choose this path first when the symptom is a sluggish or unreliable system feature rather than a content-listing problem. For example, it is the option Sony associates with performance drops and system-feature issues.
Rebuild the PS5 database
- Turn the PS5 off and enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the DualSense with the USB data cable and press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Choose Rebuild Database.
- Let the scan and database creation finish before disconnecting power or storage.
Use this option when the console’s content index appears inconsistent—for example, when an icon for a game you already deleted remains on the Home screen. The operation scans the drive and makes a fresh database; it does not download the game again.
Which Safe Mode options erase data?
The Safe Mode menu contains both non-destructive maintenance commands and destructive reset commands. Read the full label before confirming an option.

| Option | Data effect stated by Sony | When it belongs in the process |
|---|---|---|
| Repair Console Storage | “This option does not erase data.” | When the console reports a storage problem and the repair option is offered |
| Restore Default Settings | Does not delete games, apps, screenshots, video clips or saved data | When restoring settings is necessary without removing user content |
| Reset PS5 | Deletes all user data | Only after less-destructive troubleshooting and a verified backup |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Deletes all user data; reinstalling system software is explicitly a data-deleting step | Last-resort recovery when instructed by official support or the console’s recovery process |
Clearing the system software cache and rebuilding the database are not factory resets. Do not select either reset command simply because you intended to clear a cache.

If a game will not start
Sony’s troubleshooting order moves from the least disruptive checks toward Safe Mode maintenance. Follow it in sequence so that you do not delete and reinstall a game unnecessarily.
- Restart the PS5. A normal restart can clear a one-time launch fault.
- Restore licenses. This addresses entitlement or license-recognition problems without removing the installation.
- Delete and reinstall the game. Use this only if restarting and restoring licenses do not resolve the launch failure; deleting removes the local installation that you will need to download or install again.
- Check system software. Install any available PS5 system software update through the console’s normal settings before escalating.
- Use Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Enter Safe Mode and choose the maintenance operation that matches the symptom. A cache clear is the targeted first choice for system-feature or performance trouble; a database rebuild is appropriate when content indexing is the apparent problem.
Reinstalling the PS5 system software is a later recovery step, not a routine fix for a game that simply fails to launch. Sony states that reinstalling system software deletes all data on the console, so back up to USB or cloud storage before selecting it.
When Safe Mode will not start
The menu never appears
- Verify that the PS5 is fully off, not in Rest Mode, before holding the power button for the second-beep sequence.
- Check the USB, HDMI and power cables. Sony advises trying replacement cables when a connection may be preventing Safe Mode from displaying or accepting input.
- Use a known data-capable USB cable for the DualSense. A cable that only charges may leave the controller unusable at the Safe Mode prompt.
Power-cycle the console
If Safe Mode still will not launch, perform Sony’s power-cycle procedure:
- Hold the PS5 power button until it beeps and the console shuts down.
- Disconnect the power cable for 20 minutes.
- Reconnect the power cable.
- Try the Safe Mode entry sequence again: hold the power button and release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first.
The PS5 repeatedly boots into Safe Mode
When the console keeps returning to Safe Mode, select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then choose Clear System Software Cache. This addresses the temporary system-data condition Sony associates with feature and performance problems while avoiding the data loss of a reset.

Releasing after the first beep
The first beep only confirms that the power button was pressed. Safe Mode requires the second beep, which Sony places about seven seconds later. Releasing early starts the console normally.
Using a charge-only controller cable
Safe Mode needs the DualSense connected over USB. If the console does not respond when you press the PS button, change to a cable that supports data transfer rather than assuming the controller is faulty.

Choosing a reset because the wording looks similar
Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, Repair Console Storage and Restore Default Settings are different from Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). The two reset choices delete user data; the maintenance choices do not.

Interrupting a scan or repair
Once a cache clear or database rebuild begins, leave the PS5 connected to power until it returns to normal operation. Disconnecting power during storage work can create a new problem instead of fixing the original one.
Expecting a guaranteed speed improvement
Sony describes the situations each operation can address but does not publish a fixed completion time or quantified improvement. Judge the result by whether the original symptom—such as a feature error, performance drop or stale game icon—has changed, not by an assumed percentage or timer.
A safe decision path
- Identify the symptom. Feature errors or general performance drops point to Clear System Software Cache. A stale content listing points to Rebuild Database.
- Shut down correctly. Wait for the indicator to stop blinking, then hold the power button until the second beep.
- Connect the DualSense by data-capable USB. Press the PS button only after the cable is attached.
- Run one maintenance action. Start with the operation that matches the symptom instead of selecting a reset.
- Retest the original problem. Try the affected feature or game after the console restarts.
- Escalate persistent faults. Check replacement cables and complete the 20-minute power cycle if Safe Mode is inaccessible. If the issue remains, use PlayStation Repairs. Reserve reset or system-software reinstallation for cases where the recovery process specifically calls for it, and back up first because those options erase data.
What to expect after maintenance
A cache clear targets temporary system data, while a database rebuild reconstructs the content index. Neither operation is a substitute for restoring a license, reinstalling a damaged game or updating system software when those are the actual causes. If the same symptom returns after the appropriate maintenance action and the normal game-troubleshooting steps, continue with the escalation path rather than repeating resets that erase your content.
