To use a commercially released song in a science video or livestream, clear two separate rights: synchronization permission for the underlying composition (music and lyrics) and master-use permission for the particular sound recording. Then confirm any public-performance and platform permissions for the live transmission, replay, monetization, territory, duration, edits, clips and cross-posts you plan to make.
A performing-rights-organization (PRO) license, a consumer music subscription or a platform’s automated decision does not by itself prove that your audiovisual use is cleared. Get the relevant grants in writing, keep the records with the project, and replace the track if you cannot verify the scope.

What rights does a song in a science video involve?
“The song” is usually at least two legally distinct works. The first is the musical composition: the melody, harmony, arrangement elements protected as the song, and lyrics. The second is the sound recording, often called the master: the particular recorded performance you want to place in your video.
Recommended Free Tools
Those works can have different owners. A publisher or other authorized composition owner commonly handles synchronization (sync) permission. A record label or authorized administrator commonly controls master-use permission for the recording. A cover recording may have a different master owner from the original while still using the original composition.

There can also be a public-performance layer. A public transmission or performance of the composition may be administered by a PRO or collecting society, subject to that organization’s repertoire and license terms. That performance coverage is not a substitute for sync permission or master permission.
| Layer | What it covers | Typical contact | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Musical composition | The underlying music and lyrics | Publisher or authorized composition rights holder for sync; a PRO may administer public-performance rights | Sync permission for the audiovisual use, plus any separate performance coverage required by the distribution method |
| Sound recording (“master”) | The particular recorded performance inserted into the video | Record label controlling the recording or an authorized aggregator or distributor | Master-use permission for the exact recording, edit, livestream, replay and distribution scope |
| Public performance | Public transmission or performance of the composition | A PRO or collecting society for works in its repertoire | Repertoire, account, territory, content type and other limits in the performance license |
Because these rights are split, permission from one party does not automatically grant the others. YouTube’s explanation of music rights describes labels as usual master-rights holders and PROs or collecting societies as frequent managers of public-performance rights in compositions. BMI states that it licenses performing rights in its repertoire, not synchronization or mechanical rights.
Do I need a license for a livestream?
Usually, yes, if you plan to play a copyrighted commercial recording in a public science livestream and you do not already have written permission that covers the use. A livestream has at least two distinct moments to clear:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The live transmission: the audience hears or receives the music while you are broadcasting.
- The recording and later uses: the saved replay, highlight, short clip, podcast version, social post or rebroadcast may remain available after the live event.
A license written only for a live event may not include an archived video. Conversely, a license for an edited upload may not authorize a live transmission. Ask for both expressly. Include every platform and account involved, rather than assuming that permission for one service follows the video elsewhere.
Some platforms have their own music-rights administration and royalty arrangements. Those arrangements are platform-specific; they do not establish that you personally hold every sync, master, performance, territory, replay or monetization right. Confirm the current rules for your creator account and content type, and read the written rights grant alongside the platform terms.
What a PRO license does—and does not—cover
A PRO license generally addresses public-performance rights for works in that PRO’s repertoire, under the organization’s contract and usage rules. It is not a universal music license.
BMI’s official guidance is explicit: “BMI only licenses performing rights and does not license mechanical or synchronization rights.” BMI also says, “BMI does not offer synchronization licenses.” For an audiovisual use, synchronization permission normally comes from the publisher or another authorized composition owner. The recording’s master-use permission normally comes from the label or authorized recording administrator.

Does a Spotify or Apple Music subscription let me play songs on stream?
No. A consumer music-streaming subscription is permission to use the service under its consumer terms; it is not a video or livestream copyright clearance. BMI’s FAQ says a personal music-streaming subscription does not provide the necessary clearance to play copyrighted songs publicly.
Do not treat a paid account, downloaded track, CD purchase or purchased digital file as permission to synchronize that recording to a science video. Those transactions generally give you access to listen under the service or sale terms, not the rights to transmit and embed the music in your production.
Step-by-step music-clearance workflow
1. Write down every planned use
Before contacting anyone, make a use sheet for the project. Record:
- Whether the music is background, an intro or outro, part of an experiment or demonstration, or performed live.
- The exact platforms and creator accounts where the live event, upload or replay will appear.
- Whether the event will be monetized, sponsored or supported by advertising.
- The countries or territories in which viewers may access it.
- The license term, including how long a replay remains available.
- Any edited version, trailer, short clip, podcast extract, classroom copy or cross-post.
- Whether the music will be cut, looped, faded, remixed, synchronized to a graphic or otherwise edited.
Rights holders quote and grant rights against a defined scope. A vague request such as “permission to use this song online” leaves important questions unanswered.
2. Identify the exact composition and recording
Capture the song title, writers, publisher information, artist, album, label and the recording identifier if one is available. State whether you need the original recording, a cover, an instrumental edit or a new performance.
The composition and master may have different owners, and a recording may be administered differently in different territories. If you plan to use a cover, you still need composition clearance even though the master owner is different from the owner of the original recording.
3. Locate authorized contacts
Start with publisher and ownership information for the composition, then identify the label or authorized administrator for the master recording. BMI’s FAQ describes Songview, developed with ASCAP, as a tool that presents ownership shares for many United States works. Use an ownership database as a starting point, not as proof that the person who replies has authority to grant every right.
When several writers or publishers appear, ask whether one representative can grant the required share or whether all necessary owners must approve. Keep copies of the ownership information you relied on and ask the contact to confirm its authority in writing.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
4. Request written sync and master grants
Your request should identify the track and recording and describe the project in operational terms. Include:
- “Science video” or “science livestream,” with a short description of the content.
- Live transmission, saved replay and any edited or clipped versions.
- Named platforms, websites, embedded players and cross-posts.
- Territory, term and whether the content may remain available indefinitely after publication.
- Monetization, advertising, sponsorship and audience limits.
- Permitted edits, fades, loops, excerpts, voice-over and synchronization to visuals.
- Attribution wording and any Content ID or claim-handling instructions.
Ask the composition owner or publisher for sync permission and the recording owner for master-use permission. BMI’s guidance says producers usually request synchronization licenses from publishers because BMI does not issue them.
5. Check public-performance and platform coverage separately
Ask the relevant PRO, collecting society or platform licensing contact whether its coverage applies to your specific account, content type, territory, live transmission and archived replay. Confirm whether the service’s arrangement covers only performance rights or also addresses other rights through a separate mechanism.
Do not infer from a platform’s ability to identify a track that the platform has cleared your production. Platform music systems can detect a work, route revenue, mute audio or leave a video online without documenting that you hold the sync and master grants you need.
6. Save a rights file
Keep signed agreements, invoices, emails confirming authority, track and recording identifiers, attribution language, platform instructions and any claim-resolution correspondence with the project files. Name the files so an editor or producer can match each permission to the exact recording and version used.
A practical rights file should let you answer, months later, which owner granted which right, for which version, on which platform, in which territory, for what term and under what monetization conditions.
7. Replace the track if clearance fails
If an owner cannot be located, will not grant the required scope or offers terms you cannot accept, replace the music rather than relying on assumptions. Commission original music under a written agreement or choose a production-music catalog whose license clearly covers your live stream, archive, platforms, territory, term, monetization, attribution and claim-handling needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReview the composition and recording terms even when a catalog advertises a simple license. Confirm who owns the new recording, whether the catalog controls the underlying composition, how Content ID claims are handled and whether renewals or takedowns can affect an archived science lesson.

How to evaluate a written license
Read the grant as a checklist, not just a permission sentence. A usable license should make the following points clear:
- Works: the exact composition and exact sound recording, including alternate edits or versions.
- Media: livestream, on-demand replay, edited upload, podcast audio, short clips and promotional materials.
- Platforms: each named service, your own website and any permitted third-party embeds or cross-posts.
- Territory: the countries in which viewers may access the content.
- Term: live event date, initial availability and the period for which the replay and clips may remain online.
- Money: monetization, advertising, sponsorship, subscription access and audience restrictions.
- Editing: fades, loops, voice-over, excerpts, timing changes and synchronization with graphics or demonstrations.
- Attribution and claims: required credit, Content ID procedures, whitelisting and who responds to automated claims.
- Renewal and termination: what happens to an archived video if the term expires or the owner ends the license.
If a term is silent on a material use, ask for clarification before publishing. Do not assume that “online,” “digital,” “video” or “broadcast” includes every live, replay, clip and cross-platform use.

Background music under a telescope demonstration
Even low-volume background music is synchronized to the video when it accompanies the images. Volume, duration and placement do not eliminate the need to examine sync and master rights. If viewers hear the track in a public transmission, performance coverage may also matter.

An intro is still an audiovisual synchronization. A short opening does not create an automatic license or a seconds-based safe harbor. Clear the complete composition and recording, and include the intro in the stated platforms, term and monetization scope.
A live performance by the presenter
Performing a song yourself may avoid using the original master recording, but it does not remove the composition rights. The live or recorded performance still involves the underlying song, and the video may require sync permission. Address any separate platform or public-performance coverage that applies.
A cover recording supplied by a musician
The musician may own or control the new master, while the original writers or publisher control the composition. Obtain written permission from the cover performer or recording owner and separately clear the composition for synchronization.
A public-domain composition
A public-domain composition does not automatically make every recording free to use. Composition and recording rights are separate. Verify the copyright and license status of the particular recording, including whether a modern arrangement or performance adds protected material.
A short quotation for criticism or teaching
The reviewed sources do not establish a seconds-based safe harbor. Fair-use analysis depends on the facts, including purpose, amount, nature and market effects, and can be uncertain. Do not promise that a brief excerpt is automatically safe; obtain permission or qualified legal advice when the use is important or disputed.

What a YouTube music claim means
A Content ID match, monetization decision, mute, regional block or decision to leave a video online is a platform action, not a written grant to you. It may reflect a rights holder’s selected policy for a particular territory or recording. It does not necessarily prove that you have sync permission, master permission, public-performance coverage or the right to reuse the track in clips and on other platforms.
Keep the signed licenses even when a platform accepts the upload without a claim. If a claim appears, follow the license’s specified dispute or whitelisting process and provide the requested identifiers. If you do not have documented rights, do not treat a successful upload as clearance.
Why statutory licenses do not solve ordinary video synchronization
The U.S. Copyright Office identifies statutory licenses in defined contexts, including section 112 ephemeral recordings and section 114 public performance of sound recordings by certain digital audio transmissions. Those provisions apply to qualifying services and circumstances described by statute. They are not a general permission for an individual science creator to synchronize commercial music in a video or livestream.
Do not confuse a statutory license for a qualifying digital audio service with direct clearance for your audiovisual project. The actual use, service, territory and statutory conditions must match, and sync and master questions remain separate.
Costs, timing and negotiation
There is no universal price for clearing a named commercial track. BMI says annual fees depend on business type and music use and directs applicants to a representative for fee details. A track’s sync and master quotes depend on the owners and the requested scope; the reviewed official materials do not provide an individual science-video rate card.
Ask for a quote that itemizes the rights and term rather than accepting a single unexplained “music fee.” A live-only license, a permanent worldwide archive, paid promotion and unlimited clips can carry different conditions. Confirm whether the quoted amount is one-time, recurring, territory-specific or subject to renewal.
Build clearance time into the production schedule. Ownership may be divided among several parties, and a publisher or label may need internal approval before issuing a grant. If the broadcast date is fixed, maintain a cleared replacement track so the project is not dependent on a last-minute response.

Clearing a commercial track
- Best when: the specific song is central to the concept and the budget and schedule allow owner-by-owner negotiation.
- Main work: secure both composition sync and recording master permission, then confirm performance and platform coverage.
- Main risk: multiple owners, territory limits, expensive renewals or a grant that excludes replay, clips or monetization.
Commissioning original music
- Best when: you need predictable worldwide or long-term use and can brief a composer.
- Main work: put ownership, recording delivery, composition rights, edits, platforms, term, territory, monetization and claim handling in the composer agreement.
- Main risk: an informal commission may leave rights with the composer or performer, so a written assignment or license is essential.
Using production-music catalog material
- Best when: you need a practical replacement with a defined license and several platform versions.
- Main work: verify that the catalog’s terms cover both the composition and recording, live use, archived replay, clips, monetization, territory and attribution.
- Main risk: a “royalty-free” label does not by itself answer Content ID, platform, renewal or cross-posting questions.
For any option, compare the same eight points: composition and recording coverage; live and archived-video permission; named platforms and cross-platform rights; territory and term; monetization and audience limits; editing, clips and reuse; attribution and Content ID duties; and price and renewal conditions.
International audiences and unusual projects
This guidance is U.S.-oriented. Copyright ownership, neighboring rights, collecting-society practice and platform licensing can vary by country. A license that is adequate for a U.S.-only release may not cover viewers elsewhere, and a U.S. PRO arrangement does not automatically clear every territory.
List the countries where the stream or replay will be available and ask each rights holder whether the grant is worldwide, limited to named territories or subject to local collecting-society rules. For high-value productions, sponsored broadcasts, educational distribution at scale or disputed uses, consult qualified counsel in the relevant jurisdictions.
Pre-publication clearance checklist
- The composition title, writers, publisher and ownership shares are identified.
- The exact recording, artist, label and recording identifier are identified.
- Written sync permission is obtained from the publisher or authorized composition owner.
- Written master-use permission is obtained from the recording owner or authorized administrator.
- Any PRO or collecting-society coverage is confirmed for the actual account, repertoire, territory and use.
- Live transmission and saved replay are both covered.
- Platforms, embeds, cross-posts, clips and promotional edits are listed.
- Territory, term, monetization, sponsorship and audience restrictions are clear.
- Editing, attribution and Content ID procedures are documented.
- Agreements, invoices and correspondence are stored with the project.
- A replacement track is ready if any required right cannot be confirmed.
Bottom line for science creators
Clear the song and the recording as separate assets, then match every written grant to the way your science video or livestream will actually be shown. A PRO license, consumer subscription or claim-free upload is not a substitute for documented sync and master permission. When the scope cannot be confirmed, use original or properly licensed catalog music instead of publishing on an assumption.
