Yes—you can safely clear the Windows DirectX shader cache, and you can reset the NVIDIA driver cache, without uninstalling games, removing save files, or deleting the DirectX runtime. The trade-off is temporary: the next launch or first trip through a game may take longer while shaders compile again.

Use Windows Disk Cleanup for the general DirectX cache. If you use an NVIDIA GPU and the problem remains, follow NVIDIA’s cache-reset sequence in the NVIDIA App before removing its cache files. Do not start by deleting arbitrary folders, and do not confuse a shader-cache reset with Steam’s download-cache reset.

What the DirectX shader cache does

A shader is a small program used by the graphics pipeline to produce lighting, materials, shadows, post-processing and other visual effects. Before a game can use many shaders efficiently, the graphics driver or operating system may compile them into a form suitable for the installed GPU and driver. Compiling can consume CPU time and cause pauses, especially when a game first encounters a new effect.

A shader cache stores those compiled results on disk. On a later run, the game and driver can reuse compatible entries instead of compiling everything from scratch. Microsoft describes Windows 10’s D3DSCache as a DirectX Shader Cache component: versioned, integrated with the operating system and used for driver compilations and shader conversions. D3D11 documentation likewise describes an OS-managed disk cache that stores compiled shaders to accelerate future application runs.

The cache is disposable data, not the game itself. Clearing it removes compiled entries; it does not remove DirectX, alter your game installation or erase normal save files when you use the documented Windows or NVIDIA procedures.

Should you clear it?

Clearing is most useful as a diagnostic step when a cache entry may be stale or corrupted—for example, after a graphics-driver change, a game update or persistent shader-related stutter. It is not a universal performance upgrade. Because the cache exists to avoid future compilation, the first run after deletion can be slower, show a compilation screen or stutter briefly while new entries are created.

No official source establishes a universal rebuild time or a guaranteed frame-rate improvement. The result depends on the game, the number of shaders it encounters, the CPU, storage speed, driver and graphics settings. Judge the result only after the game has completed its initial compilation and you have traversed the area or scenes that originally caused trouble.

What a reset removes

Item Result of a documented shader-cache cleanup
Compiled shader data Removed and regenerated as applications run.
DirectX runtime files Not removed by selecting DirectX Shader Cache in Disk Cleanup.
Installed games Not uninstalled.
Save files Not deleted by the Windows or NVIDIA procedures described here.
First launch after cleanup May take longer or compile shaders again.

Prepare before deleting anything

  1. Save your game and exit it normally.
  2. Close other graphics-heavy applications, such as 3D editors, game launchers running a game, video encoders or benchmarking tools.
  3. If you are troubleshooting, write down the symptom: crash, hitching, long load, texture problem or another visual artifact. This gives you a before-and-after comparison.
  4. Make sure Windows is not in the middle of a driver installation or a major game update. Let those operations finish first.
  5. Use the narrowest cleanup that tests your hypothesis. Start with the Windows DirectX cache rather than deleting unrelated temporary-file categories.

Clear the Windows DirectX Shader Cache with Disk Cleanup

Disk Cleanup is Microsoft’s built-in method for selecting temporary and system file categories. It also provides the supported Windows interface for the DirectX shader cache.

  1. Press the Windows key and search for Disk Cleanup. Open the utility.
  2. When prompted, select the Windows or system drive, usually the drive containing the Windows installation, and choose OK.
  3. Allow Disk Cleanup to calculate removable files. If the window offers Clean up system files, select it. Windows will calculate the categories again and may ask you to choose the drive a second time.
  4. In the file-category list, check DirectX Shader Cache.
  5. Leave unrelated categories unchecked unless you intentionally want to remove them. In particular, do not select a category merely because it has a large size.
  6. Select OK, confirm deletion, and wait for Disk Cleanup to finish.
  7. Restart the game. If it shows shader compilation, let that process complete. Then reproduce the scene or action that exposed the original problem.

The exact amount shown beside DirectX Shader Cache can be small or large and changes as Windows and games create entries. That number is the amount currently eligible for cleanup, not a universal capacity limit.

Why this method is safer than browsing to a folder

Windows maintains cache locations and formats that can change with the operating system, driver and graphics API. Disk Cleanup knows which category is being removed and avoids turning a temporary-file cleanup into an accidental deletion of unrelated data. Microsoft’s manual file guidance is limited to documented working-directory cache files; it is not a blanket instruction to remove every folder with “shader” in its name.

Reset the NVIDIA driver shader cache

NVIDIA’s driver-managed cache is a separate layer from the Windows DirectX cache. NVIDIA’s support procedure temporarily disables the cache setting, reboots, removes the NVIDIA cache files from the user’s local AppData NVIDIA directory, and then lets the driver recreate them when a game launches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close games and other applications that use the GPU.
  2. Open the NVIDIA App.
  3. Open Graphics, then Global Settings.
  4. Find Shader Cache Size and set it to Off.
  5. Select Apply.
  6. Restart Windows. The reboot ensures that processes holding cache files release them before you remove the files.
  7. After signing back in, close the NVIDIA App if it remains open and delete the NVIDIA shader-cache files in the user’s local AppData NVIDIA directory, following NVIDIA’s current support instructions for the installed app and driver.
  8. Launch the affected game. The driver should recreate cache files automatically as the game compiles shaders.
  9. If you disabled the setting only for this reset, return to the NVIDIA App and restore the previous Shader Cache Size value after the cleanup. NVIDIA’s reference describes this setting as the maximum disk space used for shader compilations; it is not a command to clear the cache by itself.

Do not remove NVIDIA folders that are not identified as shader-cache data. AppData contains settings and data for many applications, and an imprecise deletion can create unrelated problems.

AMD and Steam caches: separate scope, different instructions

AMD drivers and Steam can maintain their own shader-related caches. These layers are real, but their locations and controls vary by driver version, launcher version, operating-system configuration and library location. A path copied from a forum post may be correct for one installation and wrong for another.

Use the current AMD support documentation for your exact driver package before deleting an AMD cache. For Steam, use current Steam support guidance for the specific game and client version. Do not present an unverified folder path as universal, and do not assume that clearing Steam’s download cache clears compiled shaders.

Do not confuse Steam’s download-cache reset with shader cleanup

A download-cache reset targets Steam’s content-delivery data. It can affect how the client signs in or downloads content, while a shader-cache cleanup targets compiled graphics data. They solve different problems and have different side effects. Use a download-cache reset only when the symptom points to Steam downloads or the client itself, not as a generic shader fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to expect on the first launch afterward

After a cache reset, the game may compile shaders during startup, while loading a level or when you first encounter an effect. The loading screen can last longer, and traversal stutter can temporarily return. This is expected behavior: the data that previously accelerated those operations has been removed.

Keep the game open long enough to finish its own compilation process. If it compiles in stages, visit the areas or modes you normally play before deciding whether the reset helped. Closing the game during compilation can leave the cache incomplete, so a second launch may compile more data.

Once compatible entries are rebuilt, later runs should again be able to reuse them. A cache reset should therefore be evaluated over more than the first few seconds of the first launch.

Choose the right cleanup scope

Option Scope Authority Reversibility Main side effect
Windows Disk Cleanup: DirectX Shader Cache Windows-wide DirectX cache category Built-in Microsoft procedure Automatic rebuild when applications run Initial shader compilation may take longer
NVIDIA App cache reset NVIDIA driver-managed cache NVIDIA support procedure Automatic recreation on the next game launch Requires temporarily turning Shader Cache Size off and rebooting
AMD driver cache AMD driver layer Version-dependent; use current AMD instructions Generally regenerated by the driver, but exact behavior depends on version Path and controls vary
Steam shader-related data Launcher or per-game layer Version- and game-dependent; use current Steam instructions Depends on the client and game Do not confuse with Steam download-cache reset

Start with the smallest relevant scope. If the problem affects several DirectX games after a Windows or driver change, the Windows category is a sensible first test. If it is specific to an NVIDIA driver cache symptom and persists after that test, use NVIDIA’s sequence. A launcher-specific issue should be investigated at the launcher layer instead of repeatedly deleting Windows files.

Troubleshoot in a controlled order

  1. Reproduce and classify the symptom. Note whether the failure is a crash, a repeatable hitch, an unusually long load or a visual artifact. Record when it occurs and which game or scene triggers it.
  2. Close the game and clear only the Windows DirectX cache. Use Disk Cleanup and select only DirectX Shader Cache unless you have another reason to remove a category.
  3. Relaunch and allow compilation to finish. Do not judge performance during the first seconds if the game is still building shaders.
  4. If you use NVIDIA and the symptom remains, reset the NVIDIA cache. Follow the NVIDIA App sequence: turn Shader Cache Size off, apply, reboot, remove the identified cache files, launch the game, and restore the setting afterward if appropriate.
  5. Compare the same scenario. Use the same graphics settings, resolution, level or route where possible. A different scene does not provide a useful before-and-after comparison.
  6. If the issue persists, verify game files and check updates. A damaged asset, incompatible game patch or driver defect is not repaired by deleting compiled shaders.
  7. Escalate based on the symptom. A crash that occurs before rendering, an artifact visible in screenshots, or a problem across unrelated games may require driver rollback, a clean driver installation, hardware diagnostics or the game developer’s support process. Cache deletion is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix.

When a cache reset did not help

  • If the same stutter returns only while new shaders are being encountered, give the cache time to rebuild before repeating the cleanup.
  • If the game crashes at the same point after a complete rebuild, investigate game files, patches and drivers rather than deleting the cache again.
  • If only one game is affected, focus on that game’s files and settings; a Windows-wide reset may not address a game-specific problem.
  • If several games fail after a driver update, test the driver and its installation state in addition to the cache.
  • If the issue is a launcher sign-in or download error, use the launcher’s troubleshooting path instead of a shader-cache procedure.

Manual deletion and developer controls: what to avoid

Search results often list cache folders with similar names. Their contents can belong to Windows, a GPU driver, a game, a launcher or a development tool. Deleting an arbitrary directory can remove configuration or force unrelated applications to rebuild data.

Microsoft’s documented manual-file guidance is limited to specific working-directory cache files. Treat that as a narrow instruction, not permission to erase every cache location you can find. Keep the Windows Disk Cleanup method as the default for the general DirectX cache.

Microsoft’s ShaderCacheControl API is a developer-mode control, not a general consumer cleanup command. It is intended for software development and testing scenarios. Installing or invoking developer-only tooling is unnecessary for the normal Windows or NVIDIA reset described here.

Technical limits and cache-size details

Cache behavior is tied to the operating system, graphics API, driver, GPU and application. An entry compiled for one driver or hardware configuration may not be reusable after a change, which is one reason a driver update can be followed by recompilation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft documents a default maximum value-file size of 128 MB for D3D12 disk-cache sessions. That is an API default for cache-session data, not a universal limit on the total DirectX cache shown in Windows and not a recommended setting for every game or PC. Do not use it to estimate how much space your system-wide cache should occupy.

NVIDIA’s Shader Cache Size setting similarly controls the maximum disk space allocated for NVIDIA shader compilations. Turning it off for the documented reset is a temporary maintenance action; it does not mean that permanently disabling shader caching improves performance.

Common questions

Will deleting the DirectX Shader Cache break a game?

Using Disk Cleanup to remove only DirectX Shader Cache removes compiled data, not the game, DirectX runtime or normal save files. The game may compile shaders again and take longer on its next run.

Where is the NVIDIA shader cache?

NVIDIA’s support procedure places the relevant files in the user’s local AppData NVIDIA directory, but the exact subfolder can vary with the installed driver and app. Use NVIDIA’s current support instructions rather than deleting every NVIDIA folder under AppData.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I clear the cache after every driver update?

No. Clear it when you are troubleshooting stale-cache symptoms or when the driver’s documented procedure calls for it. A routine reset after every update only guarantees another compilation cycle and is not established as a performance requirement.

Why did the game stutter after I cleared shaders?

The old compiled entries were removed, so the game had to compile shaders again as it encountered them. Let the game finish its startup compilation and play through the affected areas before judging the result.

Can clearing the cache increase FPS?

There is no universal FPS gain. A reset can remove stale data that contributes to a specific problem, but it also causes temporary recompilation. Compare the same scene after the cache has rebuilt instead of assuming a benefit.
