In Chrome for Android, open More (⋮) > Delete browsing data > More options. Select Cached images and files, add Cookies and site data only if you intend to reset website sessions or preferences, and leave Saved passwords unchecked before tapping Delete data. The categories are separate, so clearing cache does not inherently erase saved passwords.
What you can delete—and what stays
Chrome’s deletion screen groups several kinds of browser data. Choosing one does not automatically choose the others. That separation is the key to clearing temporary files while preserving credentials.

| Category | What it contains | What happens when you delete it | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cached images and files | Copies of page resources such as images, scripts and other content kept locally so pages can load faster. | Chrome removes those local copies. A site can download them again on the next visit, so the first load may be slower. | A page looks outdated, is formatted incorrectly, fails to load, or your phone needs local storage reclaimed. |
| Cookies and site data | Website-created data that can store sign-in state, preferences, shopping-cart state and other site-specific settings. | Sites may forget you, reset preferences or require you to sign in again. This is broader than clearing a cache. | You need to reset a broken website session or remove stored data, and you accept the possibility of signing in again. |
| Saved passwords | Credentials that Chrome has stored for sign-in forms. | Those saved credentials are deleted from the selected scope. They are not selected merely because cache or cookies are selected. | Only select this category if you deliberately want to remove saved passwords. |
| Browsing history | Visited-page records shown in History and address-bar suggestions. | The selected history entries disappear. It does not control cache or saved passwords. | Only when removing the record of visited pages is part of your goal. |
| Autofill form data | Information Chrome uses to fill forms, such as addresses or other saved entries, depending on your setup. | Selected autofill records are removed. | Only when you intend to clear form suggestions; leave it unchecked for a cache-only cleanup. |
The labels and arrangement can vary with Chrome version, Android device layout and language. Follow the categories visible in your own More options panel rather than assuming every installation looks identical.
Clear only the cache while keeping passwords and logins
This is the least disruptive option. It removes temporary page files but leaves cookies, site data and saved passwords in place.

- Open Chrome on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap More, the three-dot button (⋮), usually at the top-right of the browser.
- Choose Delete browsing data.
- If the initial screen shows only a short list, tap More options to display individual data categories.
- Under the category list, select Cached images and files.
- Make sure Cookies and site data, Saved passwords, Browsing history and Autofill form data are not selected unless you have a separate reason to delete them.
- Choose a Time range if Chrome presents that control. For a complete cache reset, use All time; for a smaller cleanup, choose a shorter range.
- Read the selected categories and range once more, then tap Delete data.
Afterward, reopen the problem page. Chrome may take longer on its first load because it has to download resources again. That temporary slowdown is expected and does not indicate that your passwords were removed.
Add cookies and site data only when a site needs a reset
Cache and cookies solve different problems. Cache is a local copy of page content. Cookies and site data represent the website’s stored state, which can include a remembered session or preference. Deleting the latter is more disruptive.
When cache plus site data makes sense
- A site keeps showing a stale account state after you have changed settings.
- A page repeatedly loops at sign-in, displays a broken layout, or behaves as though old settings are still present.
- You want to remove data that one or more sites have stored locally, and you are prepared to sign in again.
How to perform the broader deletion
- Open More (⋮) > Delete browsing data in Chrome.
- Tap More options if necessary.
- Select Cached images and files and Cookies and site data.
- Leave Saved passwords unchecked. Also leave history and autofill unchecked unless you intentionally want those removed.
- Set the time range, inspect the category summary and tap Delete data.
Deleting cookies can sign you out of individual websites and erase their preferences. It does not promise that you will remain signed in everywhere simply because Chrome itself remains signed in. Google’s help guidance distinguishes a Google Account session from the sessions maintained by separate websites.

Choose the time range carefully
A time range limits which matching records Chrome removes. Google’s Android cookie-help guidance lists these choices:
| Time range | Practical use |
|---|---|
| Last 15 minutes | Undo a very recent browsing-data change or remove data created during a short troubleshooting session. |
| Last hour | Target a problem that started during the current hour without affecting older site data. |
| Last 24 hours | Clean up data from today while retaining older entries. |
| Last 7 days | Useful when a website problem developed over the past week. |
| Last 4 weeks | A broader monthly cleanup that still avoids older data. |
| All time | Remove every matching item Chrome has stored within the selected categories. |
Not every Chrome build presents the same wording or layout. If your screen uses a different label, use the visible time-range control and verify the summary before confirming. A shorter range is the safer first attempt when you are troubleshooting one recent problem; All time is the broadest choice and can affect more websites.
Delete data for one website instead of every site
If only one domain is misbehaving, a per-site deletion limits the fallout. You do not need to clear cookies for every website in Chrome.

- Open the affected website in Chrome.
- Tap the page-information control beside the address bar. Depending on the page and Chrome version, this appears as an information icon or a lock-style site control.
- Choose Cookies and site data.
- Review the stored data shown for that site and tap Delete beside the data you want removed.
- Reload the page and test it again.
Removing one site’s cookies can still sign you out of that site or reset its preferences. The advantage is scope: unrelated sites keep their cookies and sessions.
What happens to saved passwords
Saved passwords are a separate checkbox. If you select only Cached images and files, Chrome’s documented category-level controls do not select saved passwords for you. Keep checking the final selection because a previous cleanup choice, a simplified dialog or a different device layout may make the list look unfamiliar.
Do not select Saved passwords merely because a page is failing to sign in. A sign-in loop is more often addressed by clearing that site’s cookies and site data, checking the site’s own account-recovery process, or reloading the page after a cache-only cleanup. Deleting passwords removes the credentials Chrome has stored; it is not a routine cache-repair step.

There is also an account-synchronization consideration. Google warns that data saved to a Google Account and deleted from an Android device can be removed from all devices signed in to that account. Treat the confirmation screen as an account-data decision, not just a local-phone cleanup. Inspect the selected categories and range before pressing Delete data, particularly when Chrome sync is enabled.

Deleting cookies while you are signed in to Chrome does not, by itself, sign you out of your Google Account according to Google’s cookie guidance. That statement applies to the Google Account session; it does not guarantee that every unrelated website will preserve its login.

Pre-deletion checklist
Use this short check before confirming a cleanup:
- Identify the goal: refresh page files, reset one site, or clear data for many sites.
- Open More options so every selectable category is visible.
- Confirm Saved passwords is unchecked.
- Confirm whether Cookies and site data is selected; include it only when you accept possible sign-outs and preference resets.
- Check the time range, especially if it is set to All time.
- Consider whether the data may be synced to other devices signed in to the same Google Account.
- If one site is affected, prefer its per-site Cookies and site data control over a browser-wide deletion.
Which cleanup should you choose?
| Your situation | Categories to select | Likely trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Pages are slow or display old images and formatting. | Cached images and files. | The next visit may be slower while resources download again; sessions and passwords remain unless separately selected. |
| One website has a broken session or persistent preference. | That site’s cookies and site data, using the per-site route. | You may be signed out of that site and lose its stored preferences. |
| Several websites show loading or formatting problems. | Cached images and files; add Cookies and site data only if resetting sessions is acceptable. | A browser-wide cookie deletion can affect many sites at once. |
| You want to remove visited-page records too. | Add Browsing history deliberately. | History and address-bar suggestions for the selected range are removed. |
| You want to erase stored form suggestions. | Add Autofill form data deliberately. | Selected autofill entries disappear; this is independent of cache and passwords. |
| You intend to remove credentials. | Select Saved passwords only after verifying that this is truly intended. | Stored credentials are deleted, and account-synced data may be removed across signed-in devices. |
After clearing: expected behavior and next steps
The first page load is slower
That is normal after a cache-only cleanup. Chrome no longer has the local page resources and must fetch them again. Speed should return as frequently used resources are cached anew.
A site asks you to sign in
This is expected after deleting that site’s cookies or site data. Sign in again using your normal credentials. If you did not select cookies, check whether the site itself expired the session or whether a different device or browser is involved.
The original problem remains
Recheck the scope. A cache-only cleanup cannot remove a site preference stored in cookies, while deleting cookies will not repair a network outage or an account lock. Try the narrowest appropriate action first, then investigate the site’s status, account settings or connection if the behavior is unchanged.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You cannot find the same menu
Chrome labels and positions can vary by app version, Android skin and locale. Start from the three-dot More menu and look for Delete browsing data. Once there, use More options to expose the category-level controls. Do not rely on a screenshot from another device as proof that a category is selected.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a broad Android settings reset instead of Chrome’s category controls: the browser’s own screen gives you the clearest distinction between cache, cookies, passwords, history and autofill.
- Assuming “clear cache” means “clear everything: cache is only one category, and the effect depends on what is checked.
- Leaving All time selected accidentally: this can remove older data when a recent range would have solved the problem.
- Clearing every site’s cookies for a one-site fault: use the page-information route when the problem is isolated.
- Ignoring synced-account scope: account-saved data removed from Android may disappear on other devices signed in to that account.
- Deleting passwords as a troubleshooting shortcut: saved passwords are separate and should remain unchecked unless credential removal is your explicit goal.
A safe repeatable procedure
For routine troubleshooting, use this order:
- Start with the affected page and decide whether the issue looks like stale page content or a stored site session.
- Use a cache-only deletion first when you want the smallest impact.
- Reload and test.
- If the same site still misbehaves, remove that site’s cookies and data rather than all sites’ data.
- Use browser-wide cookies and site-data deletion only when the problem spans multiple sites or you intentionally want a broad reset.
- At every confirmation screen, verify that Saved passwords remains unchecked and that the time range matches your intention.
This sequence preserves the credentials Chrome stores while giving you progressively stronger ways to refresh or reset website state.
