To clear Bing searches, open Bing’s History page and remove individual entries or choose Clear all. If you were signed in to a personal Microsoft account, also open the Microsoft Privacy dashboard, select Browsing and search, and clear activity under Search history. To remove the URLs and visit times stored by Microsoft Edge, use Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Choose what to clear. These are separate records, so clearing one does not automatically clear the other.
The steps below show exactly which control to use for personal, work or school, and signed-out searches, how Edge sync changes the deletion scope, and what “clear” cannot promise about backups or other devices.

What Bing history and browser history actually contain
“Bing history” can mean two different stores. Bing records the words you submit to its search service. Your browser separately records pages visited, visit times, downloads, cookies, cached files and related local data. Microsoft’s support documentation explicitly warns that clearing Bing search history does not clear a browser’s history: Microsoft Search in Bing helps keep your info secure.

A dashboard entry missing from your account does not prove that no local Edge history exists. Conversely, deleting a local Edge record does not necessarily remove a Bing activity record stored with an account. Decide whether you need to clear searches, browser visits, or both before starting.

How do I clear Bing search history?
Option 1: Remove searches from Bing’s History page
- Open Bing and open the site menu.
- Choose History to open the Bing Search History page.
- For one entry, use its remove or delete control. To remove the listed history in that view, choose Clear all.
- Confirm the action if Bing presents a confirmation prompt, then refresh the page to verify that the entries you intended to remove no longer appear.
This route is the practical choice for signed-out searches, for a quick device-level cleanup, and for work or school accounts. Microsoft documents the Bing History page as the place to remove individual searches and to clear all history for a work or school account: Turn search history off or on.
Option 2: Clear searches saved to a personal Microsoft account
If you searched while signed in to a personal Microsoft account, clear the account activity as well as any local list visible on Bing:
- Sign in to the personal Microsoft account that was active when you searched.
- Open the Microsoft Privacy dashboard.
- Select Browsing and search.
- Find Search history and choose Clear all activities.
- Return to Bing’s History page and check the device view. If entries remain there, clear them with Clear all or remove them individually.
The Privacy dashboard is the account-level control for personal Microsoft-account search activity. It is not a substitute for clearing Edge’s local browsing database, which is handled in Edge settings.

Organization-managed accounts should use the Bing Search History page’s Clear all control. Do not assume that instructions for a personal Microsoft-account Privacy dashboard will expose or delete an organization’s records. Account policies, administrator settings and the account type can change what you can see and remove. If the clear control is unavailable, your organization may restrict deletion; contact its administrator rather than trying to alter another account’s data.

Signed-out searches are device-specific
Microsoft describes searches made while signed out as available on the device where they were made, not as activity attached to your personal Microsoft account. Use Bing’s local History page on that device. Clearing a personal account’s dashboard will not remove a signed-out list that remains locally visible, and clearing that local list will not remove searches that were separately saved to an account.
Turn Bing search history off for future searches
On Bing’s Search History page, use the search-history toggle to stop new searches from being added. This is a forward-looking setting: turning the toggle off does not delete entries already saved. Clear the existing list separately, using the Bing page or the Privacy dashboard as appropriate. Microsoft’s instructions are at Turn search history off or on.
How do I clear browsing data in Microsoft Edge?
Use Edge’s current settings path
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (the three-dot menu), then choose Settings.
- Open Privacy, search, and services.
- Under Clear browsing data, select Choose what to clear. Wording can vary slightly by Edge version, platform, account type or region.
- Choose a Time range, such as the period that contains the visits you want to remove.
- Select Browsing history.
- Select Clear now.
Microsoft’s full procedure, including the current Edge interface, is in View and delete browser history in Microsoft Edge. The documented history page applies to Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 and Windows 11; labels can differ on other platforms.
Choose other data types deliberately
The same dialog can offer cookies and other site data, cached images and files, download history, passwords, autofill form data, site permissions and hosted-app data. Select only what you intend to remove:

- Browsing history: removes the recorded list of visited pages for the selected time range.
- Cookies and other site data: can sign you out of websites and remove saved site preferences.
- Cached images and files: forces sites to download those files again; it is separate from the URL history list.
- Download history: removes the list of downloads from Edge, not necessarily the downloaded files themselves.
- Passwords and autofill data: remove saved credentials or form entries and should be selected only when that is part of your goal.
Clearing cookies or cache is not required merely to delete browsing history. Conversely, selecting only Browsing history will not clear cookies, cached files or saved passwords.
Understand Edge sync before you click Clear now
When Edge sync is enabled, clearing synced items can remove them across the devices connected to that sync account. If you want to remove history only from the current computer, Microsoft instructs you to turn sync off first, then clear the local data. - Check whether Edge sync is on for the profile you are using.
- If the cleanup must stay on this device, turn sync off before clearing the selected data.
- Run Choose what to clear and select the desired time range and data types.
- Re-enable sync only if you understand that future synchronization may repopulate data created on another device.
If the objective is to remove history everywhere, leave sync enabled and review each synced device afterward. A device that is offline may not reflect the change until it reconnects.

- On Bing, open History and remove individual searches or choose Clear all.
- If the searches belong to a personal Microsoft account, open the Privacy dashboard, choose Browsing and search, and use Clear all activities under Search history.
- In Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Choose what to clear.
- Choose the time range and select Browsing history; add cookies, cache or other categories only if you also want those removed.
- Account for sync: leave it on for a multi-device deletion, or turn it off first for a current-device-only deletion.
- Open Bing and a few known pages again to confirm that the intended lists are empty. Do not treat a blank account dashboard as proof that the local browser database was cleared.
Why a search or visit may still appear
You cleared the wrong record
The most common explanation is that only one store was cleared. Bing search history contains queries; Edge browsing history contains visited URLs and browser data. Repeat the appropriate procedure for the other store instead of repeatedly clearing the first one.
The search was made under another account state
A personal account, a work or school account and a signed-out session can produce different history locations. Sign out and check which profile was active when the search was made. For an organization account, use the Bing History page rather than assuming the personal Privacy dashboard contains the record.
Edge sync restored or exposed another copy
With sync enabled, another device can contribute history or receive a deletion. A device that has not synchronized yet may show an older list temporarily. Check the same Edge profile on each relevant device and allow it to connect before judging the result.

The dashboard and local Edge list are different
Microsoft notes that clearing Edge browsing history from the Privacy dashboard does not automatically clear the local copy on the device. Clear the local Edge history from Edge settings when both locations are in scope. Details are in Microsoft Edge browsing activity for personalized advertising and experiences.
You are viewing a new search, suggestion or cached page
After clearing, a query you type again will create a new record. Search suggestions can also be generated from other signals and are not necessarily proof that the exact old history entry survived. Refresh the History page, verify the selected account, and check the browser’s actual history list rather than relying on an address-bar suggestion alone.
What clearing cannot promise
Deletion is not necessarily instantaneous in every backup
Microsoft says some copies of cleared search history may remain in backup systems for a limited time. Clearing removes the activity from the account or dashboard interface and starts Microsoft’s deletion process; it should not be described as instantaneous erasure from every backup system. Private browsing is not an absolute account barrier
Microsoft documents searches from private browser windows as not being saved to personal search history in the usual way. However, if you sign in to an account in a private window, searches can be associated with that account. Private browsing also does not retroactively erase records created before the private session.

These controls address Bing and Edge records. They do not retroactively remove a page from a website’s own server logs, an employer’s network monitoring, a school’s filtering system, a device backup, or a separate browser’s history. The Microsoft controls cannot delete data stored by services outside the selected Bing account and Edge profile.
Troubleshooting checklist
- No History link on Bing: open the Bing menu while signed in or signed out, look for History, and verify that you are on Bing rather than a different search page.
- Privacy dashboard shows no searches: confirm the Microsoft account, then check Bing’s device history and Edge’s local history. Signed-out or organization-account activity may not appear in the personal dashboard.
- Clear all does not remove an entry: refresh, check the selected account and repeat on the correct history store. A newly repeated search will naturally create a fresh entry.
- Other devices still show visits: inspect Edge sync status and the profile on each device. For a local-only deletion, turn sync off before clearing.
- Websites ask you to sign in again: cookies or other site data were selected. Restore the session by signing in again; do not select those categories when you only need to remove the visit list.
- Downloads remain on disk: clearing download history removes Edge’s download list, not necessarily the downloaded files. Delete the files separately if that is required.
- An organization blocks deletion: work or school policies may control retention and available buttons. Use the account’s Bing History control if available and ask the administrator about records you cannot delete.

Bottom line
Clear Bing queries on Bing’s History page, and use the Microsoft Privacy dashboard for searches tied to a personal Microsoft account. Clear visited URLs and other browser records separately in Edge’s Clear browsing data settings. Turning history off prevents new Bing entries but does not delete old ones, and Edge sync can broaden a deletion beyond one device. Treat the process as removal from the relevant account and device controls, not as an instant guarantee that every backup or outside copy has disappeared.
