How to Clear App Cache and Data on Google TV Streamer

On a Google TV Streamer, use Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > Clear data to reset one problem app. To remove cached files for every app, open the profile icon and go to Settings > System > Storage > Internal shared storage > Cached data, then select OK. Cache clearing removes temporary data; clearing an app’s data is a deeper, app-specific reset. A factory reset is a separate last resort that erases the device.

Choose the right reset first

The two commands sound similar but work at different scopes. Google’s Google TV troubleshooting instructions use Clear data for a selected app. Google’s Google TV Streamer storage instructions use Cached data to clear temporary files from all apps together.

Action Where it applies Menu path What Google documents Best use
Clear cache All apps on the device Profile icon > Settings > System > Storage > Internal shared storage > Cached data > OK Removes temporary data; Google says you remain signed in after clearing the cache. Freeing temporary storage or trying a low-risk cleanup before a deeper reset.
Clear data One selected app Settings > Apps > See all apps > select the app > Clear data Recommended by Google as an app-troubleshooting step. The support page does not define identical effects for every app’s saved settings or session. Resetting one app that will not open, play, load, or behave correctly.
Uninstall One selected app Settings > Apps > See all apps > select the app > Uninstall > OK Official storage-recovery option for apps you no longer use. Recovering space permanently by removing an unused app.
Factory reset The whole Google TV Streamer Settings > System > About > Factory reset Erases all device data. Google recommends trying other troubleshooting first. Only after less-destructive steps fail and you are prepared to set up the device again.

If one app is the problem, start with that app’s data. If the device reports low storage, clear cached data for all apps and uninstall apps you no longer need. Do not use a factory reset merely to perform routine cache maintenance.

Before you clear anything

Confirm that the menus are for the Google TV Streamer rather than another television interface or an older streaming device. Labels can vary with software updates and regional versions, so use the linked Google instructions if a label is slightly different on your screen: Google TV Help and Google Streaming Help.

  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
  • Know which app is failing. Clearing data from an unrelated app will not target the original problem.
  • If you intend to clear data, be ready to configure that app again if it asks for preferences or account details. Google’s troubleshooting page recommends the step, but does not promise the same saved-data or login result for every app.
  • If storage is the issue, review apps you actually use before uninstalling anything. Reinstalling an app later requires downloading it again and may require its setup process.
  • Reserve factory reset for a final escalation. It removes device data, profiles, installed apps, and settings, so make sure you can complete setup afterward.

Clear data for one app

This is the targeted procedure for an app that crashes, refuses to start, cannot load content, or has another app-specific fault. The path below follows Google’s Google TV troubleshooting guidance.

  1. From the Google TV home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose See all apps to display the installed-app list.
  4. Move to the app that is causing the problem and select it.
  5. Select Clear data and follow the confirmation prompt shown by the Streamer.

After the command completes, open the app and test the action that previously failed. Because the official guidance does not specify one universal result for every app, treat the command as a reset of that app’s stored information and check the app publisher’s instructions if preserving local settings or a particular session is important. Do not assume that every app handles saved preferences, downloads, profiles, or authentication in exactly the same way.

When the app is missing from the list

Use See all apps, not only the shorter list displayed on the first Apps screen. If the app still does not appear, verify that you are looking at the same Google TV profile and that the app is installed on this Streamer. An app that was removed cannot be cleared; use the app’s installation option again only after deciding that reinstalling is appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do immediately afterward

Launch the app once, wait for its normal start-up screen, and reproduce the original problem. If it now works, no device-wide reset is needed. If it asks for setup information, enter only what the app requires and use the app’s own help for account or local-data questions. If the fault remains, continue with the troubleshooting order below rather than repeatedly clearing data without checking the connection, software, or selected profile.

Why this is the targeted option

Clear data is deliberately narrower than the Storage screen’s cached-data command. You select the app first, so the action is aimed at that installation instead of every app on the Streamer. This makes it the logical next step when one service is affected but other apps work normally. It also gives you a clear test: reopen the same app and retry the same action, rather than changing several device-wide variables at once.

Clear cached data for all apps

Google’s Google TV Streamer storage procedure clears cached data across the device. It is not the same as opening an individual app and clearing that app’s data.

  1. Select the profile icon on the Google TV home screen.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select System.
  4. Choose Storage.
  5. Open Internal shared storage.
  6. Select Cached data.
  7. Confirm with OK when prompted.

Google describes cache clearing as removing temporary data and states: “Note: Clearing your app cache only removes temporary data.” Google also says users remain signed in after clearing the cache. The documented Streamer route acts on cached data for all apps at once, so it is the appropriate choice when the goal is general temporary-storage cleanup rather than resetting one app’s stored information.

What this does not do

Clearing cached data does not uninstall apps, remove the Google TV device profile, or perform a factory reset. It also does not guarantee that an app-specific playback or login problem will disappear. If one app remains broken after the cache cleanup, use the targeted Clear data route for that app and then continue with the broader checks Google recommends.

When all-app cache clearing makes sense

Use this route when the Streamer reports low storage, when several apps are affected, or when you want to remove temporary files without deleting installations. Because the command is broad, note the state of the device before you run it: which apps are failing, whether the warning is specifically about storage, and which profile is active. That makes it easier to tell whether the cleanup changed the original symptom.

Do not expect a fixed amount of space to be recovered. Google’s instructions identify the action as removal of temporary data but do not promise a particular storage saving or performance improvement. If the storage warning remains, move to the official uninstall option for apps you no longer use.

Free storage by uninstalling unused apps

Cache cleanup is temporary by nature. When storage remains tight, Google lists uninstalling apps you do not use as another option:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings from the Google TV home screen.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose See all apps.
  4. Select the app you no longer need.
  5. Choose Uninstall.
  6. Confirm with OK.

Uninstall only the app you have selected. Removing an app is different from clearing its cache: the app itself is deleted, and using it again requires installing it again. If you are troubleshooting a single app and may need its existing installation for comparison, try cache or data clearing first instead of uninstalling immediately.

Decide what can safely be removed

Start with apps that nobody uses and that are easy to install again if needed. Keep the app that is central to your current troubleshooting until you have tested the less-destructive options. Uninstalling is a storage decision, not a substitute for checking Wi-Fi, updates, a restart, or the active profile. If the same problem returns after reinstalling, the cause may not have been the old installation.

Use a troubleshooting order that limits data loss

For playback or general app-operation problems, Google presents a sequence that moves from low-impact checks toward the destructive option. Follow it in this order:

  1. Check Wi-Fi. Confirm that the Streamer has a working network connection. A network failure can look like an app failure when content cannot load.
  2. Check for system updates. Install any available Google TV Streamer system update, then test the app again.
  3. Restart the device. Use the Streamer’s restart control and allow it to boot completely before reopening the app.
  4. Confirm the selected account profile. Make sure the active Google TV profile is the one you expect before changing app information.
  5. Clear the affected app’s data. Follow Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > Clear data.
  6. Consider a factory reset only last. Google advises trying other troubleshooting before resetting.

This order matters because a Wi-Fi check, update, or restart does not erase app information. Clearing data is more targeted than resetting the entire device, while a factory reset is device-wide and irreversible from the user’s point of view.

Apply the order to common symptoms

For a single app that will not load, begin with the connection and update checks, restart, verify the profile, and then clear that app’s data. For a low-storage warning affecting the device generally, use the Storage path for cached data first, then review unused apps for removal. These are different starting points because one is an app-operation problem and the other is a capacity problem.

If an action appears to work but the original symptom is unchanged, avoid stacking several destructive actions immediately. Test the app after each step. That preserves a useful sequence of what changed and prevents an unnecessary factory reset from becoming the first explanation for an issue that was actually caused by Wi-Fi, software, or profile selection.

Factory reset: the final escalation

A factory reset is not an expanded cache-clear command. Google warns that it erases all data from the device. Use it only after the connection, update, restart, profile, app-data, and other relevant checks have failed.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose About.
  4. Select Factory reset.
  5. Read the confirmation screen carefully and proceed only if you accept the data loss.

Before confirming, make sure you know the Google account and app credentials needed for setup, understand that installed apps and preferences will need to be restored, and have ruled out a temporary network or software problem. A factory reset can return the device to a clean setup state, but it should not be the first response to a full cache or one-app error.

What to verify before confirming

  • Make sure the issue is not limited to one app that could be handled with Clear data.
  • Check Wi-Fi and available system updates first.
  • Restart and confirm the active Google TV profile.
  • Be prepared to set up the device again and restore the apps and preferences you need.
  • Proceed only when the loss of device data is acceptable.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Using the all-app cache route when only one app is broken

The Storage screen’s Cached data command is broad. It is useful for general cleanup, but it does not identify or reset only the app that is failing. For a single-app fault, select that app under Apps > See all apps and use Clear data after the preliminary checks.

Expecting cache clearing to delete the app

Cache consists of temporary data. The app remains installed, and Google says users remain signed in after clearing the cache. To remove an app, use Uninstall instead.

Assuming Clear data has one universal effect

Google recommends the command for troubleshooting but does not list identical effects for every app’s saved settings, downloaded content, or login state. If a particular app contains important local information, consult that app’s support guidance before confirming.

Resetting before checking the profile

Google includes confirming the selected account profile in its troubleshooting sequence. A wrong profile can make an app appear to have missing settings or content even when the installation itself is working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a factory reset for routine maintenance

A factory reset erases device data. It is disproportionate for ordinary cache cleanup and should remain the final escalation after less-destructive steps have been tried.

Confusing low storage with a network fault

A storage warning calls for the Storage path and, if necessary, uninstalling unused apps. An app that cannot load content may instead need a Wi-Fi check or system update. Identify the symptom before choosing a reset so that a broad cleanup is not used for an unrelated connection problem.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clear one app’s data on Google TV Streamer?

From the home screen, open Settings > Apps > See all apps, select the app, choose Clear data, and follow the confirmation prompt.

Does Google TV Streamer have a way to clear every app’s cache at once?

Yes. Select the profile icon, then go to Settings > System > Storage > Internal shared storage > Cached data and confirm with OK.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will clearing cached data sign me out?

Google says clearing app cache removes temporary data and that users remain signed in after clearing the cache. The all-app Storage command is the documented cache-clearing route for the Streamer.

Is Clear data the same as Clear cache?

No. Cached data is temporary and the documented Streamer route covers all apps. Clear data is selected inside one app’s settings and is Google’s troubleshooting step for that app; app-specific saved information can vary.

What should I do if storage is still low after clearing cache?

Use Settings > Apps > See all apps, select an app you no longer use, choose Uninstall, and confirm with OK.

When should I factory-reset the Google TV Streamer?

Only after checking Wi-Fi, installing available system updates, restarting, confirming the selected profile, and trying the affected app’s data reset. The path is Settings > System > About > Factory reset, and Google warns that it erases all device data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use Clear data for one malfunctioning app: Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > Clear data. Use Cached data under Profile icon > Settings > System > Storage > Internal shared storage to remove temporary files across all apps. Uninstall unused apps if space remains tight, and reserve Factory reset for the final troubleshooting step because it erases the Streamer.
