Start with your washer’s use-and-care manual: not every washing machine has a lint filter that owners can remove. If your model has one, unplug the washer when the access procedure calls for servicing, place a shallow container and towel under front-load openings, remove the filter, rinse it with warm or running water, brush off stubborn debris, clean the housing, and reinstall it securely. Never force a panel or dismantle a filterless design.

Why you may not be able to find a lint trap

Lint-filter designs vary by model, age and washer format. Maytag notes that newer machines often do not have filters intended for consumer cleaning. GE says many top-load systems made from 2001 onward removed the older fine-mesh filter beneath the agitator because improved pumps and larger hub openings handle lint without routine user maintenance. GE identifies Spacemaker top-load models made since 2014 as an exception with consumer-removable basket filters.

The owner’s manual is the deciding authority. If it does not describe a removable lint or debris filter, do not pry off the agitator, reach into sealed plumbing or disassemble the washer. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider instead.

Where the filter is usually located

Washer type Typical filter design and location What to expect
Top-load with agitator Some older designs place a lint screen inside the center agitator or along the tub rim. Many newer models have no consumer-cleanable screen.
Top-load with a removable basket filter A filter case may be attached inside the basket or tub area. Only remove it if the manual specifically gives a removal procedure.
Front-load A drain-pump or debris filter is commonly behind a small lower access hatch. It catches lint, hair, coins and other objects before they enter the drain system; water can spill when opened.

Samsung’s guidance also warns that not every top-load model has a lint filter. Where one exists, its case is removed, opened, brushed under running water, dried and clicked back into place. Samsung front-load machines commonly put the pump filter behind the lower access panel.

How to clean a removable filter

  1. Confirm the exact procedure. Look up the washer’s model number in the use-and-care guide and verify that the filter is designed for consumer removal. Check whether the manual specifies unplugging, a drain hose, a tool or a particular filter orientation.
  2. Make the washer safe. For any procedure classified as servicing, disconnect power first. Whirlpool’s safety instruction is: “Disconnect power before servicing. Replace all parts and panels before operating. Failure to do so can in death or electric shock.” Do not operate the washer with a panel or filter cover removed.
  3. Prepare for spilled water. For a front-load pump filter, place a shallow bowl or container below the access area and cover the floor with a towel. Residual water can drain out even when the cycle has finished.
  4. Remove the filter slowly. Open the hatch or cover and follow the manual’s direction for turning or releasing the filter. Gloves are useful if you find wet lint, hair, sharp objects or coins. Do not force a stuck filter; forcing it can damage the housing or seal.
  5. Wash the filter. Rinse it thoroughly under warm or running water. Use a soft-bristle brush or cloth for stubborn lint and residue. Avoid hard tools that could tear a mesh screen or deform plastic.
  6. Clean the housing. Wipe lint and debris from the filter cavity, threads, gasket and nearby surfaces. Check that no coin, button or hair bundle remains in the passage.
  7. Dry and reinstall. Follow the manual’s drying instructions, then fit the filter in its original orientation and tighten or latch it fully. Samsung says a top-load filter case should click back into position. Close the access panel securely before reconnecting power.
  8. Check operation. Run the test or rinse-and-spin procedure specified by the manual. Look for leaks, unusual pump noise and proper draining.

How often to clean it

Use the interval stated for your model rather than a universal calendar. Maytag recommends cleaning filters at least once a month in most cases, with more frequent cleaning for larger households or heavily soiled loads. Samsung’s US front-load guidance says to clean the pump filter at least once per month or approximately every 40 washes, whichever comes first.

Clean sooner if you notice lint or debris around the filter, increasingly wet clothes, poor draining, longer cycles, unpleasant odors or a washer that stops with water inside. These symptoms can also indicate a kinked drain hose, an obstructed standpipe, a failed pump or another fault, so filter cleaning is not a guarantee of a complete repair.

Top-load versus front-load: the practical differences

Factor Top-load lint screen Front-load pump/debris filter
Consumer access Only on models that document a removable screen or case. Often behind a lower front hatch, but access remains model-specific.
Main material captured Loose lint from wash water. Lint plus hair, coins and objects headed toward the drain pump.
Water-spill risk Usually limited, depending on location. High enough to require a bowl and towel.
Cleaning schedule Follow the manual; monthly is common guidance where a filter exists. Monthly or every 40 washes, whichever is more frequent, in Samsung’s stated guidance.

What to do when there is no removable filter

  • Confirm the model number and read the maintenance section of the manual.
  • Do not remove the agitator or tub panels solely to search for a screen.
  • Keep pockets empty, use the correct detergent amount and avoid overloading; these practices reduce debris and improve draining.
  • Clean the door gasket, detergent drawer and accessible tub surfaces according to the manual, since odors and residue may originate there rather than from a lint filter.
  • If draining problems persist, arrange manufacturer-supported service instead of opening sealed components.

Useful tools and replacement parts

A soft-bristle washing-machine cleaning brush is suitable for stubborn lint where the manufacturer permits brushing. If a filter is cracked, warped or missing, order a model-specific replacement only after checking the exact part number and compatibility in the owner’s manual. A replacement part cannot make a non-serviceable filter system consumer-accessible.
