Do not assume that a fluid safe for one format or cartridge is safe for another: Ortofon advises against solvents for both records and styli, while Audio-Technica’s 2025 catalog limits one of its record-care solutions to LP/EP records and excludes shellac.
What safe vinyl care is trying to prevent
A record’s grooves carry the information your stylus reads. Finger oils, loose dust, residue and a dirty stylus can all interfere with that contact. The safest routine is therefore preventive: keep your hands off the playing surface, keep the playback path clean, and use only care methods that the record or cartridge maker says are compatible.

The Library of Congress guidance on grooved discs recommends clean handling, clean playback equipment and upright storage in a cool, relatively dry, clean and stable environment. For ordinary dust, it says to use canned air. It also directs readers to specialized guidance for mold and waxy deposits rather than presenting one universal household-cleaner recipe.
Stylus care is a separate task. Ortofon’s FAQ says, “Ortofon do not recommend the use of solvents of any kind for cleaning of either record surface or stylus,” and recommends brushing along the cantilever toward the stylus tip. That is Ortofon’s manufacturer guidance, not a universal rule for every cartridge, so your own cartridge manual takes priority.

Identify the record and the contamination first
Before you reach for any brush or liquid, establish what you are cleaning and what is actually on it. A dry dust problem needs a different response from mold or a sticky, waxy deposit.
Confirm the format
- Vinyl LP or EP: Treat it as a grooved vinyl record and follow the record manufacturer’s compatibility instructions.
- Shellac: Do not assume an LP/EP solution is suitable. Audio-Technica’s 2025 phono-cartridge catalog specifically states that its AT634a record-care solution is for LP/EP use only and not for shellac records. Verify any product label before applying it.
- Unknown or unusual disc: Pause before using a liquid. A label that does not identify the format is a reason to seek specialist disc-cleaning advice rather than experiment.
Classify what you see
- Loose, visible dust: Use the dust-removal procedure below.
- Persistent film, mold or waxy exudate: Do not improvise a stronger home mixture. The Library of Congress points readers to specialized cleaning guidance for these conditions.
- Clicks that remain after cleaning: The cause may be a scratch, groove damage, static, contamination in the stylus, or a turntable setup issue. Cleaning cannot restore damaged groove walls.
Handle records without adding contamination
Hold a record by its outer edge and the label area. Keep your fingers away from the grooved playing surface. This is the central handling instruction in the Library of Congress’s audio-visual materials care guidance.
- Wash and dry your hands before handling a record.
- Remove the disc from its sleeve while supporting the edge and label, not the grooves.
- Set it on a clean, stable surface or on the turntable platter; do not slide it across a dusty table.
- After inspection or cleaning, return it to its sleeve while still holding the edge and label.
Keep the platter, mat, headshell area and surrounding work surface clean. Dust transferred from those parts can land on a record immediately after you have cleaned it.

Store records vertically rather than in a leaning stack. The Library of Congress recommends a cool, relatively dry, clean and stable home environment and identifies high-density polyethylene sleeves as an appropriate replacement option when a sleeve needs changing. Avoid locations where temperature or humidity changes sharply, where dust is heavy, or where records can be compressed or bent.
- Keep the shelf stable enough that records remain upright without being tightly crushed.
- Replace a damaged or dirty inner sleeve with a suitable sleeve; high-density polyethylene is one category mentioned by the Library of Congress.
- Do not put a record away while it is visibly contaminated or damp from a cleaning process.
- Keep jackets and sleeves away from sources of heat, leaks and direct environmental extremes.
Remove ordinary dust with canned air
For routine loose dust, the Library of Congress says to “use canned air to blow away dust” from grooved and optical discs. This is an archival handling recommendation, not a claim that canned air removes every deposit or is superior to every commercial product.

Dust-removal procedure
- Place the record on a stable, clean surface or on the turntable platter with the motor off.
- Hold the disc by the edge and label area.
- Use canned air to blow dust away from the grooved surface, following the can’s own operating and safety directions.
- Inspect the record under good light without touching the grooves to check whether the visible loose dust is gone.
- Put the record into its clean sleeve or proceed to playback with a clean stylus.
Canned air is for loose particulate matter. It is not a solvent, mold treatment or guaranteed solution for a greasy film. If the deposit remains attached, stop rather than increasing pressure or introducing an unverified liquid.
What to do about mold, waxy deposits and stubborn residue
The Library of Congress distinguishes ordinary dust from mold and waxy deposits and refers readers to specialized disc-cleaning guidance for those conditions. That boundary matters: a method that moves dry dust may spread a biological or sticky deposit across the grooves.
- Isolate the affected record: Keep it away from clean records and shared sleeves until you have decided on an appropriate treatment.
- Do not guess at chemistry: Avoid treating an unknown deposit with household solvents or a recipe copied from an unrelated format.
- Use specialist help for valuable or unusual discs: A professional with appropriate disc-cleaning equipment can assess the format and contamination before treatment.
- Reassess the sleeve and storage area: A contaminated sleeve or unstable storage environment can reintroduce the problem after cleaning.
Neither the Library of Congress page nor the manufacturer guidance here establishes a universal fluid formula for every vinyl record. The Library of Congress also says the effectiveness of the cleaning solution described on its page has not been compared with commercial products and is not guaranteed. Treat any performance claim beyond those instructions as unverified unless the record or equipment maker documents it.
Clean a turntable stylus safely
A stylus is a precision component. A dirty stylus can carry debris into the next record, so stylus care should be gentle and manufacturer-specific.
Check the cartridge maker’s instructions
Read the manual or care page for your exact cartridge before applying a product. The Library of Congress says playback-machine maintenance should follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and Ortofon’s published guidance is specific to its own products.

Ortofon’s published brushing method
Ortofon recommends using its fiber brush along the cantilever toward the stylus tip. The direction is important: work with the manufacturer’s stated path instead of scrubbing sideways or pushing debris toward the cartridge body.

- Turn off the turntable and secure the tonearm so it cannot swing across the record.
- Confirm that the brush is clean and intended for stylus use.
- Support your hand so it does not slip into the cantilever or cartridge body.
- Following Ortofon’s instruction, brush along the cantilever toward the stylus tip with a light, controlled motion.
- Inspect the stylus before lowering it onto a record. If debris remains or the stylus appears damaged, stop and consult the cartridge maker or a qualified technician.
Why solvents require caution
Ortofon explicitly says it does not recommend solvents of any kind for cleaning either record surfaces or styli. Do not generalize a solvent recommendation from another brand, a cleaning-kit label or an internet forum to an Ortofon cartridge. For a different cartridge, use that manufacturer’s instructions; if they are unavailable, avoiding an unverified liquid is safer than experimenting on a delicate assembly.
Keep the playback machine clean
Record care fails if the turntable immediately puts dust back into the groove. The Library of Congress recommends clean playback equipment and says more thorough playback-machine maintenance should be performed by knowledgeable professionals with appropriate equipment.
- Keep the platter and mat free of loose dust before playing a cleaned record.
- Keep the tonearm and cartridge area from contacting the work surface.
- Follow the turntable and cartridge maker’s maintenance schedule and procedures rather than dismantling parts on a general cleaning schedule.
- For internal, mechanical or alignment work, use a qualified technician when the manufacturer does not provide a safe user procedure.
Cleaning the record cannot correct a bent cantilever, damaged stylus, incorrect tracking setup or a mechanical fault. If noise continues across otherwise clean records, investigate the playback system instead of repeatedly washing the discs.

Choose supplies by job and format
There is no single “vinyl cleaner” category that answers every care question. Compare a supply by what it touches, which formats its label permits, and whether the relevant manufacturer approves it.

Audio-Technica’s 2025 catalog lists an AT6011a anti-static record brush and an AT607a stylus cleaner with brush applicator. Those listings identify product categories, not proof that either item is compatible with every record, cartridge or contamination type. Verify current instructions and format limits at the time of purchase.

Before each listening session
- Handle the record by the edge and label.
- Check for loose dust and use canned air if needed, following the can’s directions.
- Look at the stylus and remove visible debris only with the cartridge maker’s approved method.
- Check that the platter and mat are clean enough not to transfer dust.
After playback
- Lift the record without touching the grooves.
- Inspect it for new debris or an unexplained film.
- Return it to its clean sleeve and store it upright in the stable environment described above.
- If a record shows mold or a waxy deposit, set it aside for specialist guidance instead of returning it to the main shelf.
When the stylus needs attention
Clean the stylus when the manufacturer’s instructions call for it or when visible debris is present, not by repeatedly applying liquid as a precaution. Use the approved brush direction and stop if the assembly looks bent, loose or damaged.
Troubleshoot common problems
The record still clicks after dust removal
Check whether the click occurs at the same groove position every time. A repeatable click can indicate a scratch or groove damage rather than loose dust. Also inspect the stylus and playback setup. Do not keep escalating cleaning chemicals when the symptom points to physical damage.

The stylus collects debris immediately
Inspect the record, sleeve, platter mat and storage area. Dust can be reintroduced by any of those surfaces. Clean the stylus only with the cartridge maker’s approved method and address the source of the contamination.
A cleaner’s label says it is safe for vinyl
“Vinyl” alone does not answer every compatibility question. Confirm whether the product is intended for LP/EP, whether it excludes shellac, and whether your cartridge maker permits it near the stylus. Ortofon’s solvent warning is a reminder that record and stylus chemistry are separate decisions.
You cannot identify the disc format
Do not apply an LP/EP product by default. Keep the disc isolated, identify it through reliable documentation or a specialist, and select a method whose label explicitly covers that format.
The turntable needs more than surface dusting
Follow the turntable manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. For internal or precision work, the Library of Congress recommends knowledgeable professionals with appropriate equipment.
