Start with dry cleaning: stabilize the model, then lift dust with a clean, very soft brush or cloth, working from upper surfaces downward. For a fingerprint or small patch of grime, use a microfiber cloth barely dampened with water and make one or two light passes. Never scrub printed tiles, decorated elements, stickers, or transparent parts. Remove any part that needs washing, clean it separately by hand in water no hotter than 104°F/40°C, rinse it thoroughly, and air-dry it away from heat and direct sunlight. Disconnect powered elements before using any moisture.
Why display models need a different cleaning method
A display model is usually assembled, delicate and exposed to dust for long periods. Dust can settle on ledges, inside gaps and around projections such as clips, antennas and minifigures. Trying to clean every surface with pressure or a wet cloth can turn a simple dusting job into a scratched transparent element, lifted sticker or damaged decoration.

The safest principle is to use the least aggressive method that solves the problem. Loose dust normally needs no liquid. A fingerprint needs only a trace of water. A removable part with embedded grime can be washed, but it should be taken off the model first. This keeps water away from electronics and prevents you from flexing a built structure while scrubbing it.

Identify the surface before touching it
Different areas of a display set tolerate different levels of handling. Use this risk map before choosing a tool or adding moisture.
| Surface or feature | Safest first action | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Plain opaque bricks | Soft, dry brush or cloth; barely damp microfiber for a localized mark | Heavy pressure, abrasive cleaners and hot water |
| Printed tiles and decorated elements | Dry dusting; if a fingerprint remains, dab or make one very light pass with minimal moisture | Scrubbing, repeated passes, soaking or disinfectant |
| Stickers and sticker edges | Lift dust gently from the surface and edges | Rubbing across the artwork, wetting the edge or pulling at the sticker |
| Transparent windows, windscreens and gems | Lift dust with a clean, very soft cloth using almost no pressure | Paper towels, tissues, stiff brushes, ammonia-based cleaners and dragging grit across the part |
| Electronic components, motors, lights and wiring | Disconnect and remove the component; clean surrounding bricks separately | Spraying, submerging, or allowing a damp cloth near openings and connections |
| Loose removable parts | Hand-wash separately in water at or below 104°F/40°C | Cleaning while attached, washing machines, dishwashers and forced heat |
Gather safe supplies and prepare the model
Use clean, low-abrasion materials
- A clean, very soft brush for lifting loose dust from ledges and gaps.
- Two clean cloths: one dry and one microfiber cloth reserved for barely damp wiping.
- Plain water for localized marks.
- A small amount of mild detergent only when a separated part genuinely needs washing.
- A stable work surface with enough room to support the model while you work.
A cloth that has picked up grit can scratch clear parts even if the fabric itself feels soft. Keep the dry and damp cloths separate, and use a fresh section of cloth whenever you move to another area.
Prepare your hands and workspace
- Wash and dry your hands so skin oil does not become the next mark.
- Place the model on a stable surface where it cannot roll or tip as you touch it.
- Disconnect and remove powered elements before any damp cleaning.
- Inspect the build for loose sections, thin extensions and parts that you can support with your free hand.
- Plan to clean from the highest surfaces downward; loosened dust will then fall onto areas you have not cleaned yet.
Step-by-step cleaning workflow
1. Stabilize fragile sections
Before brushing, identify thin sections, hinged assemblies, antennas, clips and free-standing minifigures. Hold a support point with one hand while cleaning with the other. Do not use a projection as a handle. If a section moves under light contact, remove the vulnerable part or support the structure before continuing.
2. Lift loose dust while the model is dry
Use a clean, very soft brush or cloth with almost no pressure. Work from the top of the model toward the bottom, moving dust away rather than grinding it into the surface. Short, gentle strokes are safer than fast back-and-forth rubbing.
For clear windows, windscreens and gems, lift the dust instead of dragging it across the surface. If you see a visible particle, pick it up with the clean part of the brush or cloth; do not push it repeatedly across a transparent panel.
3. Treat printed, decorated and stickered areas as no-rub zones
Keep printed tiles, decorated elements and stickers dry whenever possible. Dust them with one light pass or lift particles from the edge. If a fingerprint must be removed, lightly dampen the microfiber cloth with water and wring it nearly dry. Touch the mark with a clean section and use one or two light passes without pressing down.

Do not soak a printed or stickered piece. Do not work the cloth across a sticker edge, because moisture and friction can lift the edge or spread dirt underneath it. Do not use household spray cleaner or disinfectant on these areas. LEGO Education warns that disinfectants may damage decorations and can create haziness, cracks or other imperfections in transparent elements.

For an opaque, non-electronic surface, dampen—not wet—the microfiber cloth with plain water. Wring it until it is nearly dry, then touch the mark with a clean section. One or two light passes are normally enough. If the mark remains, stop and reassess rather than adding pressure or cleaner; a stubborn mark may require removing the part for a separate hand wash.
Keep the damp cloth away from openings, motors, lights, wiring and any other powered component. Never spray the model directly.
5. Remove a part before deep cleaning
If dusting and a barely damp wipe do not remove grime, take the affected element off the model. Disassembly prevents water from entering hidden cavities and lets you clean all sides without bending the build. Place small parts in a clean container so they do not roll away, and note their orientation before removal if reassembly is not obvious.
6. Hand-wash the separated element
Fill a container with water at or below 104°F/40°C. LEGO’s official guidance specifies hand cleaning with a soft cloth or sponge. Add a small amount of mild detergent only if plain water is insufficient. Gently wipe the part, avoiding pressure on prints, stickers and clear surfaces.

7. Air-dry at room temperature
Let washed parts air-dry at room temperature. Keep them away from direct sunlight and all forced heat, including hair dryers, radiators, ovens and microwaves. Turn or position a part only when you can do so without rubbing a wet surface against another object. Reinstall it only when it is completely dry.
8. Inspect before rebuilding
Check transparent parts under oblique light. This angle makes remaining haze, water spots and new scratches easier to see. Inspect sticker edges and printed details for lifting or residue. If a part is visibly damaged, replace it rather than attempting an abrasive polish that could remove more surface detail.
How to handle common problem areas
Fingerprints on a display case model
Start with a dry cloth because skin oils can sometimes be lifted without water. If the mark remains, use the nearly dry microfiber method on the surrounding plain surface. Make the fewest passes possible and change to a clean section of cloth when the first section becomes soiled.
Dust trapped between tightly packed bricks
Use the tip of a very soft brush to lift dust from the gap. Work outward rather than forcing the brush deeper. If the dust is trapped behind a removable panel, take that panel off and clean it separately. Avoid improvised sharp tools that can gouge plastic or catch a sticker.
Transparent windows, windscreens and gems
These elements are particularly scratch-sensitive. Remove loose particles with a soft brush or cloth before attempting any wipe. Use no paper towel, tissue, stiff brush or ammonia-based cleaner. For a fingerprint, use the smallest possible amount of water on a clean microfiber cloth and make one light pass. If grit is visible, lift it first; wiping over grit is more hazardous than leaving a faint fingerprint temporarily.
Printed tiles and decorated panels
Dry dusting is the default. For a necessary fingerprint removal, dab or wipe once with minimal moisture and no pressure over the artwork. Do not soak the tile, scrub in circles or repeat passes until the print looks brighter. Decoration is a surface feature, not a stain to be polished.

Stickers and sticker edges
Keep the sticker dry and brush parallel to the surface rather than catching the edge. If grime sits at an edge, do not insert a wet cloth underneath it. Remove the entire part and clean around the sticker with a barely damp cloth only if you can keep moisture off the adhesive and printed face.

Minifigures and small accessories
Support a minifigure by its torso or another broad area while dusting; do not pull on hands, accessories or headgear. Remove an accessory that needs washing and treat it as a loose part. Any printed torso, face or tile follows the same no-rub rule as other decorated elements.
Models with lights, motors or battery boxes
Turn the system off, disconnect it and remove powered components before bringing a damp cloth near the model. Clean the surrounding unpowered bricks separately. Never spray, submerge or rinse electronic parts. If moisture reaches an opening, stop, disconnect power and allow the component to dry completely before testing it.
Cleaning a complete model versus separated parts
| Situation | Recommended method | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Routine surface dust | Dry brush or cloth while the model remains assembled | It avoids unnecessary disassembly and moisture. |
| One fingerprint on a plain brick | Nearly dry microfiber cloth, one or two light passes | Localized moisture solves the mark without wetting the build. |
| Grime in a removable component | Take the component off, hand-wash at or below 104°F/40°C, rinse and air-dry | Water stays away from the structure and electronics. |
| Heavy contamination across a decorated or transparent part | Remove the part and use the least-moist hand-cleaning method; avoid rubbing the decoration | Scrubbing can permanently damage the visible surface. |
| Electronic assembly | Remove it before damp work; clean only the surrounding non-electronic parts | Spray and immersion can damage powered components. |
Methods and products to avoid
- Dishwashers and washing machines: Mechanical agitation and heat are not hand cleaning and can damage elements or assemblies.
- Ovens, microwaves and hair dryers: Forced heat can deform or affect brick quality; air-dry at room temperature instead.
- Direct sunlight while drying: Use an indoor, shaded location while parts air-dry.
- Paper towels and tissues on clear parts: Fibers and friction can create fine scratches, especially when a particle is trapped between the paper and the element.
- Stiff brushes and abrasive pads: They can mark transparent surfaces and wear decorations.
- Ammonia-based and household spray cleaners: They are unnecessary for ordinary dust and can damage or haze vulnerable surfaces. Never spray a cleaner directly onto a model.
- Disinfectants on decorated or transparent parts: LEGO Education warns they may damage decorations, create haziness, or produce cracks and imperfections.
- Hot water: Keep hand-washing water at or below 104°F/40°C; higher temperatures may affect brick quality.
- Polishing compounds: If a clear or printed part is scratched, abrasive polishing can remove more material or detail. Replacement is safer.
Troubleshooting after cleaning
The surface looks cloudy
Stop rubbing. Cloudiness on a transparent element can result from residue, a cleaner reaction or surface damage. Rinse a separated part with clear water if detergent was used, then air-dry it at room temperature. If haze remains, do not apply polish or ammonia-based cleaner; replace the part if the appearance is unacceptable.
A sticker edge has lifted
Do not press or wet the lifted edge repeatedly. Allow the area to dry fully and avoid further friction. If the sticker will not lie flat, replacement of the stickered element may be more reliable than trying to reattach it with an unapproved adhesive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA print looks faded after wiping
Stop cleaning that area. Repeated passes, pressure or chemicals may have affected the decoration. Record the affected element and replace it if the appearance matters; continuing to scrub cannot restore removed ink.

A model became unstable during cleaning
Stop handling the upper section and return the model to a stable position. Rebuild or reinforce the loose area before resuming. For the next pass, support thin sections with your free hand and remove detachable projections instead of cleaning them in place.
A damp cloth touched an electronic part
Disconnect power immediately and remove the component if it can be done safely. Do not switch it on to test it while moisture may remain. Let it dry completely at room temperature and inspect connectors and openings before reconnecting. If a component still behaves abnormally, replacement is safer than repeated powered tests.
Reduce how often you need to clean
Prevention is especially useful for large models with many ledges and transparent details. A dust-sealed acrylic display case can reduce the amount of airborne dust that reaches the build and therefore reduce cleaning frequency. The case should still leave enough clearance that doors, panels or shelves do not touch antennas, wings, antennas, minifigures or other projections.
When displaying a model, keep it away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. Sunlight is not a drying method for washed parts, and heat can affect plastic. Position the model where you can reach the highest surfaces with a soft brush without leaning on the structure.
Use a light maintenance pass whenever dust is first visible rather than waiting until a thick layer requires pressure. A dry, gentle pass is less risky than a later attempt to loosen compacted grime with water and repeated wiping.
Official guidance and its limits
The LEGO Group’s support page, Cleaning your LEGO bricks and pieces, gives the core temperature and hand-washing instructions: water no hotter than 104°F/40°C, a soft cloth or sponge, thorough rinsing and room-temperature air-drying away from direct sunlight and forced heat.
LEGO Education’s 2020 LEGO Education Hygiene Guidelines says to take all LEGO elements apart before cleaning and cautions that disinfectants can damage decorations, haze transparent elements, or create cracks and imperfections.
