Keep water out of the sound opening and never rinse or immerse the earbuds. Clean charging terminals only with JBL’s limited cotton-swab method, then let every part dry completely before reassembly or charging.
JBL rates the Live Beam 4 IP55, but that is a resistance rating—not permission to wash the earbuds under a tap. The removable tips, earbud housing, sound opening and charging contacts each need a different approach.

What you can clean—and what must stay dry
There are three separate cleaning jobs:
- Silicone ear tips: These can be removed and washed separately in lukewarm water with a little dishwashing liquid.
- Earbud body and sound opening: Wipe the exterior carefully. Do not let water enter the headphone or sound opening.
- Charging contacts: JBL recommends a lightly alcohol-moistened cotton swab for the metal terminals and a clean, slightly moistened swab for the case pins.
JBL’s general true-wireless cleaning guidance states: “Do not put the headphones into water.” Follow that instruction even though the official UK product page lists the Live Beam 4 as IP55 water- and dust-resistant. IP55 describes resistance under specified test conditions; it does not make the earbuds washable, submersible or safe to rinse.

Supplies to prepare
| Supply | Use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Soft cotton cloth | Wiping the earbud exterior and removing loosened dust | Use it damp, not dripping wet |
| Cotton swabs | Cleaning visible debris and charging contacts | Use light pressure; do not push fibers or debris into the mesh |
| Lukewarm water | Washing the removed silicone tips | Keep it away from the earbud itself |
| A little mild dishwashing liquid | Cleaning silicone tips and making a mild exterior-wiping solution | Do not pour or spray the solution onto the earbuds |
| Rubbing alcohol | Minimal moisture on a swab for earbud terminals and visible buildup | JBL does not state an alcohol concentration; do not saturate the sound opening |
| Clean, dry cloth | Wiping away loose cotton or dust from contacts | Keep the case interior dry before closing it |
You do not need a branded earbud-cleaning kit. JBL’s instructions identify ordinary cotton cloths, cotton swabs, rubbing alcohol for limited swab use, water and mild dishwashing liquid.
Before you start
- Remove both earbuds from the charging case and place the case aside. Cleaning with the earbuds in the case can transfer moisture or loosened debris onto the case pins.
- Work on a clean, dry surface with good light. You need to see the sound opening, microphone areas and charging terminals without turning the earbud over repeatedly.
- Wash and dry your hands. Skin oil is one of the contaminants JBL identifies around charging contacts, and clean hands reduce what you transfer back onto the earbuds.
- Do not begin by adding liquid to the mesh. First remove the tips and inspect the surfaces so you can use the smallest amount of moisture necessary.
Step-by-step: clean the silicone ear tips
1. Remove each tip gently
Grip the silicone tip itself and pull it away from the earbud nozzle without twisting the earbud body aggressively. Put the left and right tips in separate spots if you want to return them to the same earbuds. The tips are removable, so they can be cleaned without exposing the electronics to water.
2. Wash the tips
Rinse the removed tips in lukewarm water with a little dishwashing liquid. Work the solution around the silicone with your fingers to release earwax and skin oils. Do not use the earbud as a handle while washing; only the detached silicone piece belongs near the water.
3. Rinse away soap
Rinse until no soapy film remains. Soap residue can irritate the ear or make the tip slippery when it is refitted. Avoid very hot water, which is unnecessary for this job and can make handling the small parts more difficult.
4. Dry completely
Leave the tips to dry fully before fitting them back. Shake off excess water and use a dry cloth to remove droplets from the outside, but do not refit a tip that is still damp inside its sleeve. Moisture trapped between the tip and nozzle can migrate toward the sound opening when the earbud is inserted into your ear or returned to the case.

Step-by-step: wipe the earbud body and sound opening
1. Make a barely damp cloth
Apply a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid to water, then dampen a cotton cloth with the solution and wring it out well. The cloth should feel damp rather than wet. JBL’s guidance supports wiping the exterior with a damp cloth and mild dishwashing-liquid solution; it does not support pouring, spraying or rinsing the earbud.
2. Wipe the exterior
Wipe the smooth housing, paying attention to areas that touch your skin. Turn the earbud in your fingers so you can clean around seams and the underside, but keep the cloth away from an amount of liquid that could run into an opening.
3. Treat the sound opening as a no-liquid zone
Clean around the sound opening carefully. Use a dry or only minimally damp cotton swab to lift visible residue at the edge. Do not scrape the mesh with a pin, needle, knife or other sharp object, and do not press wax farther inside. JBL specifically cautions that water must not get into the headphone.
4. Use alcohol only as a limited swab technique
JBL support also describes a cotton swab with some rubbing alcohol for removing dust and earwax from true-wireless earbuds. Keep this method restrained: moisten the swab lightly, wipe visible debris, and stop before the swab can drip. JBL does not specify an alcohol concentration. Do not flood the mesh, soak the earbud or treat the alcohol instruction as permission to wash the earbud.
5. Remove loosened residue
Use a clean, dry cotton cloth or swab to pick up residue that has been loosened. If the mesh still looks blocked, repeat a gentle surface pass rather than increasing pressure or adding more liquid. The goal is to remove material at the surface, not to force a tool through the grille.

Step-by-step: clean the charging contacts and case
Dirt on metal charging contacts is a common reason an earbud charges intermittently or fails to charge. JBL’s contact-cleaning article explicitly includes the Live Beam 4 among the models covered.
1. Clean the earbud terminals
Put some rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab, keeping the amount small enough that it cannot drip. Rotate the swab while lightly scrubbing the earbud’s metal charging terminals. Use a gentle touch; the contacts need their surface cleaned, not polished aggressively.
2. Wipe away loosened material
Use a cotton cloth to remove loose cotton fibers, dust or residue. JBL notes that contacts can be contaminated by “sweat, skin grease, or ear wax.” Check that no strand of cotton remains attached to a terminal.
3. Clean the case pins
Use a clean swab for the charging pins inside the case. JBL allows the swab to be slightly moistened, but keep the amount minimal. Do not pour alcohol into the wells or leave a wet swab pressed against the pins.
4. Dry the case interior completely
Before closing the case, make sure its interior is completely dry. This is an explicit part of JBL’s contact-cleaning guidance. Leave the lid open while the interior dries; do not put the earbuds back inside to speed up the process.

5. Repeat only until visibly clean
JBL says to repeat the light cleaning until the contacts look visibly clean. Stop once the metal surfaces and case pins are free of visible contamination. More scrubbing is not a better result if the contacts are already clean.
Optional contact troubleshooting aid
JBL’s support page mentions a pencil tip and eraser as possible further aids for charging contacts. Treat these as a troubleshooting suggestion for the metal contacts only—not as tools for the sound mesh or earbud openings. They are not necessary for routine cleaning and should never be used to scrape the grille.
Drying, reassembly and the first charge
- Confirm that the silicone tips are dry inside and out.
- Confirm that the earbud bodies and sound openings have no visible liquid.
- Confirm that the charging terminals and case pins are dry.
- Fit each silicone tip back onto its nozzle only when it is fully dry and seated evenly.
- Return the earbuds to the case only after the case interior is completely dry.
- Close the lid and check that each earbud sits on its charging contact without forcing it into position.
If you can see moisture, feel dampness or notice a wet spot on a contact, keep the parts separated and let them dry longer. Do not charge a damp earbud merely to test whether it still works.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why cleaning can restore volume—and when it will not
JBL says dust and earwax buildup in true-wireless earbuds can cause low volume in one or both earbuds and can contribute to channel-balance issues. Clearing visible buildup can therefore help when residue is blocking the sound path. JBL recommends periodic cleaning to reduce the likelihood of those problems.
Cleaning is not a guarantee. A low or uneven channel can also have another cause, and the cited JBL guidance does not promise a particular volume increase or recovery time. If the sound remains low after one careful cleaning, stop before using sharper tools, pushing debris inward or adding more liquid. Consult JBL support or the product’s troubleshooting documentation rather than escalating to aggressive scraping.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | First check | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| One earbud is quieter | Inspect that earbud’s sound opening for visible wax or dust and compare the tip with the other side | Clean the tip separately and wipe the opening carefully; do not promise that cleaning will fix a non-cleaning fault |
| Both earbuds sound muffled | Check both tips and the outer mesh for buildup | Perform the complete dry-tip and damp-cloth routine, keeping liquid out of the openings |
| Volume is uneven after cleaning | Confirm that both tips are seated and fully dry | Stop using tools or additional liquid and consult JBL support documentation |
| One earbud does not charge | Inspect the earbud terminal and matching case pin for sweat, grease, wax or dust | Use JBL’s lightly alcohol-moistened swab method, then dry the case interior completely |
| Charging is intermittent | Check for residue that prevents the metal surfaces from touching | Repeat light contact cleaning until the surfaces look clean; do not scrape the sound mesh |
What not to do
- Do not put the headphones in water, even though the model carries an IP55 rating.
- Do not rinse the earbud under a tap, spray cleaning solution onto it or pour liquid over the sound opening.
- Do not push wax into the mesh with a pin, needle, toothpick or other sharp object.
- Do not saturate a cotton swab with alcohol or allow it to drip into an opening.
- Do not use a pencil tip or eraser on the sound grille; JBL’s suggestion is confined to charging-contact troubleshooting.
- Do not close a case while its interior is damp.
- Do not reinstall wet silicone tips or charge an earbud that still has visible moisture.
- Do not assume cleaning is the answer to every low-volume or balance problem.
How often to clean the Live Beam 4
JBL recommends periodic cleaning because dust, earwax, sweat and skin grease accumulate during normal use. The support guidance does not prescribe a fixed number of days or a special calendar. Instead, inspect the tips, sound openings and contacts whenever you notice visible buildup, reduced volume, channel imbalance or unreliable charging.
A quick inspection after exercise or heavy sweating can catch contamination before it reaches the contacts. Remove the tips for a more thorough wash when they feel oily or show residue. Keep the routine gentle: frequent light cleaning is safer than waiting for a thick blockage and then trying to remove it forcefully.
Understanding the Live Beam 4’s IP55 rating
The official JBL UK product page lists IP55 water- and dust-resistance. That specification is useful context for ordinary exposure, but it does not change JBL’s cleaning instruction that water must not enter the headphone. Resistance to dust and water under a rating test is different from permission to immerse, rinse, soak or wash an earbud.
Recommended Free Tools
For cleaning decisions, use the more specific rule: wash only the detached silicone tips; wipe the earbud exterior with a controlled amount of moisture; keep the sound opening and internal electronics from water; and dry everything before charging.
When to stop cleaning
Stop if the mesh will not clear with gentle surface wiping, if a contact appears damaged, if liquid has entered an opening, or if the earbud remains substantially quieter after careful cleaning. Continuing with sharper objects or more solvent can turn a removable surface problem into physical damage. At that point, use JBL’s support and troubleshooting resources for the Live Beam 4 rather than treating the earbud as washable.
