Across current Apple, Samsung and Sony guidance, the common rule is gentle, mostly dry cleaning of the electronic body, separate washing of removable ear tips only when expressly allowed, no sharp tools or force, no liquid in ports or charging contacts, and complete drying before use or charging.
There is no universal wet-cleaning recipe. A method approved for one model can damage another, so treat the procedures below as a decision guide rather than permission to improvise.

Why earbud cleaning has to be model-specific
Earbuds combine speaker mesh, microphones, vents, proximity sensors, batteries and charging contacts in a very small enclosure. Earwax, sweat and lint can cover an opening, while liquid or a pushed-in particle can create a different fault. Apple documentation notes that debris or earwax buildup can affect performance and features such as Active Noise Cancellation. That does not mean more aggressive cleaning is better: pressure, solvents and moisture can damage the same openings you are trying to clear.
Manufacturer directions differ substantially. Apple gives a controlled micellar-water procedure for specified AirPods meshes; Samsung’s general US instructions for covered Galaxy Buds models emphasize dry tools and prohibit alcohol or soapy water; Samsung’s separate Buds4 instructions allow a small amount of micellar cleansing water on a brush, never poured directly on the earbuds; and Sony permits a tightly wrung damp cloth for certain WF/WI sound-output meshes. These instructions are not interchangeable.

Before you touch the earbuds
Identify the exact model and generation
Check the companion app, Bluetooth device name, packaging or the manufacturer’s support page. “AirPods,” “Galaxy Buds” and “WF” cover several generations with different mesh, tip and water-resistance instructions. AirPods Pro 3, for example, has an immersion step that is not stated for other generations. Samsung limits its micellar-water process specifically to Buds4.
Prepare a clean work area
- Disconnect the earbuds, remove them from your ears and keep them out of the charging case while cleaning.
- Work over a dry, well-lit surface so a loose tip or mesh screen cannot fall into dust or liquid.
- Have a clean, lint-free cloth, a small soft-bristled brush and, only where the model guide permits it, a cotton swab or micellar water.
- Keep running water, sprays, compressed air, alcohol, household cleaner, soap and metal tools away from the electronic body unless the exact manufacturer instructions explicitly say otherwise.
Inspect before cleaning
Look for a detached mesh, cracked housing, swollen battery, corrosion, or a charging contact that is loose. Do not continue with home cleaning if the housing or battery appears damaged. Cleaning cannot safely repair a failed component.
Tools: what is useful and what is risky
| Tool or material | Appropriate use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Soft-bristled earbud cleaning brush | Lightly loosening dry debris from approved exterior surfaces and openings. | Use light strokes only; do not force bristles through mesh. Check the exact model guide first. |
| Clean, dry, lint-free cloth | Wiping the housing, case exterior and, for Sony’s specified models, a tightly wrung damp cloth on sound-output mesh. | Never leave the cloth wet enough to drip or push moisture into a seam. |
| Cotton swab | Samsung lists one for dry cleaning on its covered Galaxy Buds models. | Keep it dry unless the model instructions specifically authorize another method; loose fibers can remain in openings. |
| Micellar water | Only in Apple’s designated AirPods mesh procedure and Samsung’s Buds4 brush procedure. | Do not pour or spray it on an earbud, and do not generalize the method to other models. |
| Distilled water | Rinsing a brush in Apple’s specified mesh process or the Samsung Buds4 process. | It is not a universal rinse for electronic parts; keep liquid away from the device and contacts. |
| Sharp pick, needle or metal brush | None. | Manufacturers warn these can puncture mesh, damage openings or push debris farther inside. |
A conservative cleaning sequence for most models
Use this baseline only for surfaces your model’s care page allows you to clean. When a model-specific instruction conflicts with a step below, the model-specific instruction wins.
- Power down and separate. Pause playback, disconnect Bluetooth if practical, remove each earbud and place the charging case aside. Do not clean while an earbud is charging.
- Remove detachable ear tips. Pull only the silicone, foam or other tip that the manufacturer identifies as removable. Do not pry out a fixed grille or sensor.
- Clean the tips separately. Follow the tip instructions for your model. AirPods Pro tips may be rinsed with water without soap or household cleaner, then dried completely. Do not rinse the electronic body.
- Brush loose debris outward. Hold the earbud with the opening facing downward where practical. Use a clean, soft brush with short, light strokes. Do not press on mesh or scrub across it hard.
- Wipe the housing. Use a dry, lint-free cloth unless your model’s guide specifies a tightly wrung damp cloth for a particular mesh. Keep microphones, vents, seams and charging contacts from collecting moisture.
- Clean the case separately. Remove dust from the case exterior and charging wells with a dry, soft brush. Follow the port-specific rules in the next section.
- Dry, inspect and reassemble. Let every part dry completely, inspect the mesh and contacts, then reinstall tips and place the earbuds in the case only when the manufacturer’s required drying period has passed.
Apple AirPods and AirPods Pro
AirPods mesh procedure
Apple’s Australian support instructions for designated AirPods meshes describe a controlled process: use a toothbrush and micellar water on the specified mesh, blot rather than scrub, rinse the brush with distilled water, and continue carefully. The page says to avoid other areas, sharp objects, abrasives and running water. Because the procedure is limited to named mesh locations, do not apply micellar water to the entire earbud, microphones, sensors, seams or charging contacts.
Apple requires at least two hours of drying for the cited procedure. Keep the earbuds out of the case during that period and do not test them by charging early.

AirPods Pro removable tips
Apple’s AirPods Pro instructions treat the silicone tips separately. Remove them, rinse the tips with water only, use no soap or household cleaner, and dry them completely before reattaching. Water on a detached tip is not permission to rinse the AirPods Pro body.
AirPods Pro 3 exception
The AirPods Pro support page includes an optional immersion instruction specifically for AirPods Pro 3. It is generation-specific. Do not immerse another AirPods or AirPods Pro model because it looks similar.

Apple recommends a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush for debris in a charging port and warns not to insert anything into the port or get liquid in it. Wipe the outside with a dry cloth, keep liquid away from the charging wells and connector, and allow any accidental moisture to dry fully before connecting power.
Samsung Galaxy Buds
General Galaxy Buds guidance
Samsung’s US cleaning page for its covered Galaxy Buds models recommends a cotton swab and dry brush for the earbuds and charging case. It warns against sharp objects, metal or wire brushes, alcohol and soapy water. Remove detachable tips as the model permits, clean them according to the model instructions, and reattach only after they are dry.
Use light strokes around the speaker mesh and vents. If debris does not lift easily, stop rather than pressing harder; Samsung warns that excess force can damage openings or drive dirt inward.

Galaxy Buds4 procedure
Samsung Canada’s instructions, last updated April 9, 2026, are different from the general dry-cleaning guidance. For Buds4, put a small amount of micellar cleansing water on a soft brush, wipe carefully, rinse the brush with distilled water, and never apply liquid directly to the earbuds. Samsung states: “Let the earbuds dry completely before use.” Keep that instruction limited to Buds4 and do not substitute it for another Galaxy Buds model’s care page.
Samsung case and contacts
Clean charging contacts and wells with dry tools. Do not flood the case, spray cleaner into the wells or scrape contacts with metal. If sweat or water reaches the contacts, wipe the area gently and wait until it is fully dry before inserting the earbuds or connecting a charger.
Sony WF and WI series
Sound-output mesh
Sony’s WF/WI care guidance allows a clean cloth dampened with water and wrung tightly for the relevant sound-output mesh. “Tightly wrung” matters: the cloth should not drip. Wipe gently, avoid pushing debris into the earbud and do not rub the mesh hard.
Lodged debris in a vent
For a specified situation in which debris is lodged in a vent, Sony permits a clean brush or dust-cleaning gel. Use only the technique described for that vent and remove the gel without leaving residue. A pick, needle or improvised adhesive is not an equivalent.
Solvents, contacts and moisture
Sony cautions against force and solvents such as alcohol. Wipe moisture around charging ports promptly, clean contacts with dry materials and let the parts dry at room temperature before charging or storage.

How to clean removable ear tips without damaging them
Silicone tips
Detach silicone tips only by the base, not by pulling on a thin lip until it tears. Use the manufacturer-approved rinse or wipe method. For AirPods Pro, plain water is allowed for detached tips, with no soap or household cleaner. Shake off excess water, pat dry with a lint-free cloth and leave the tips detached until completely dry.
Foam or specialty tips
Do not assume a foam or fabric tip can be rinsed like silicone. Follow its care label and the earbud maker’s instructions. If the material stays damp, misshapen or torn, replace it rather than reinstalling it on the electronic body.
Reattachment check
Before use, confirm that each tip is seated evenly and cannot slip off. A poorly seated tip can alter fit, sound and the seal used by noise-control features.
Cleaning the charging case and contacts
- Unplug the case and remove the earbuds.
- Turn the case upside down and use a dry, soft brush to loosen loose lint from the wells.
- Use a dry cotton swab only where the model’s instructions allow it; do not pack fibers into the contacts.
- For a charging port, follow the maker’s rule. Apple says to use a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush and not insert anything or get liquid in the port.
- If moisture is visible, wipe around it with a dry cloth and leave the case open at room temperature until fully dry.
- Inspect the contacts for corrosion or a bent spring. Stop using the case and seek service if a contact is damaged.
Drying: the step that prevents many failures
Drying is not the same as wiping the outside until it feels dry. Moisture can remain under a tip, around a mesh edge or inside a charging well. Keep parts separated and exposed to room-temperature air. Do not use a hair dryer, heater, oven, direct high heat or compressed air to accelerate the process.
Recommended Free Tools
Apple’s cited AirPods procedures require at least two hours of drying. Samsung’s Buds4 instructions say to dry completely, and other model pages may use different wording. Follow the exact requirement for your generation; when no time is given, wait until no moisture remains anywhere before use or charging.

After workouts, sweat and other exposure
Apple advises cleaning and drying AirPods after workouts or exposure to sweat and other substances that can cause irritation. Wipe perspiration from the exterior promptly, remove and dry detachable tips as directed, and keep the earbuds out of the case until dry. The manufacturer pages reviewed do not establish a universal calendar-based cleaning frequency, so a fixed daily or weekly schedule would be guesswork. Clean when you see buildup, after a wet or sweaty session, or when the manufacturer tells you to.
What not to do
- Do not push wax into speaker mesh or vents with a pin, toothpick, needle or metal tool.
- Do not press hard or scrub mesh until it changes shape.
- Do not spray cleaner, alcohol, soap solution or water directly onto the earbud or case.
- Do not rinse an electronic body because a detachable tip can be rinsed.
- Do not put damp earbuds into the charging case.
- Do not use a wet cotton swab in a port or charging well.
- Do not generalize Apple’s micellar-water method, Samsung Buds4’s method or Sony’s damp-cloth method to another model.
- Do not keep escalating force when the first gentle pass fails.
Troubleshooting after cleaning
Muffled sound remains
Recheck that the tip is seated correctly and that you cleaned the correct sound-output opening. Let the earbud dry for the full manufacturer-specified period, then test at a normal volume. If sound remains muffled, stop applying force. Apple directs users to seek service when cleaning does not resolve the issue; the same cautious approach is sensible for other brands.
Only one earbud is quiet
Compare the two earbuds under the same playback and balance settings. Inspect the quiet unit’s mesh and charging contacts without scraping. Confirm it actually charged; a dirty contact can prevent charging and mimic an audio fault. If the contact or mesh appears damaged, arrange manufacturer service rather than trying to open the housing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Noise cancellation or transparency changed
Debris can affect features such as Active Noise Cancellation, but cleaning has no guaranteed or quantified improvement. Check that microphones and vents are clear using the approved method. If the feature remains abnormal after complete drying and gentle cleaning, use the maker’s diagnostic or service route.
Charging stops after cleaning
Remove the earbuds, inspect the wells and contacts for moisture or fibers, and let the case and earbuds dry completely. Do not scrape contacts or insert liquid. Persistent charging failure, corrosion or heat is a service issue.
When to stop and seek service
- The mesh is torn, detached or pushed inward.
- The housing is cracked, swollen or unusually hot.
- Liquid entered a port, microphone opening or charging well and problems followed.
- Gentle, model-approved cleaning did not restore sound or charging.
- A tip will not stay attached or a contact is bent.
Service is safer than dismantling an earbud: opening the housing can damage seals, microphones and the battery, and it removes the manufacturer’s ability to assess the original fault.
Quick Recap
