The safest routine method is simple: shut the PlayStation down, unplug its AC power cord, and use a low-powered vacuum around the exterior vents. Wipe the plastic with a soft, dry cloth, then restore clear airflow around the console. On supported PS5 models, PlayStation also describes removing the covers and vacuuming dust underneath them; use the instructions for your exact model and do not treat cover removal as permission to dismantle internal components.
What you need and what you should not use
For ordinary vent maintenance, gather only a few items:

- A soft, dry cloth for the exterior plastic. A clean microfiber cloth is suitable as long as it is dry and free of grit.
- The console’s model-specific safety or cover-removal instructions if you are cleaning beneath PS5 covers.
PlayStation’s official guidance does not specify a particular vacuum model, suction rating, cleaning interval or compressed-air procedure. It says to use a low-powered vacuum for dust in and around the vents. Do not present compressed air as a manufacturer-approved alternative, and do not spray cleaner into or onto the console.

Before cleaning: shut down and make the space safe
- Save your work and shut the console down normally. Use the system’s power menu rather than interrupting it while a game, update or storage operation is running.
- Wait until the console is fully off. Do not clean while it is operating, in Rest Mode, or showing an active light that indicates it has not completed shutdown.
- Disconnect the AC power cord from the console. PlayStation’s PS5 support guidance and the PS5 and PS4 safety documents all place unplugging before cleaning. Disconnect other cables too if they will get in the way, but the AC cable is the critical one.
- Move loose objects away from the vents. Remove game cases, papers and fabric that could be pulled toward the vacuum or block airflow when you put the console back.
- Work in a dry, well-lit area. Keep liquids, sprays and damp cloths away from the openings.
Unplugging is not a formality. It prevents the console from being powered while you handle its vents and makes it less likely that a cleaning tool will catch on a moving fan or connected cable.
Routine surface-only cleaning: the default for PS5 and PS4
1. Inspect the vents first
Look at every visible intake and exhaust opening. Dust may form a thin film that is difficult to see, or a thicker mat at the edge of a grille. Check the surrounding shelf, floor and cable area as well; dust immediately beside a vent can be pulled back into the console after cleaning.
Do not insert a nozzle, brush, cotton swab, card or other object through a vent. The aim is to lift loose dust at the surface, not to reach the fan or heatsink through an opening.
2. Vacuum around the exterior vents
Set the vacuum to its lowest practical power. Hold the attachment just outside the grille and move it slowly along the vent area. Let suction collect dust rather than pushing the nozzle against the plastic. Work around the perimeter and any visible dust on the console’s exterior.
PlayStation describes this method for the PS5 as using “a low-powered vacuum cleaner to remove any dust that has accumulated in and around the air vents.” The wording supports external vent cleaning; it does not instruct owners to force a tool into the opening or to dismantle the machine.
Use short passes. If the vacuum brush catches on the grille, stop and reposition it outside the opening. A gentle pass that leaves a little stubborn residue is safer than high suction or pressure that could damage a grille or pull at a loose part.

3. Wipe the plastic exterior
With the vacuum disconnected from the console area, wipe the outer panels with a soft, dry cloth. Fold the cloth so that a clean section contacts the surface and use light pressure. If dust is packed into a seam, lift it from the seam rather than trying to drive it inward.

Do not spray water, alcohol, solvent or household cleaner onto the console. Do not use chemically treated wipes. If a cloth is damp, set it aside until it is completely dry before using it near the PlayStation.
4. Check the result without powering on immediately
Confirm that no cloth fibers, loose debris or vacuum attachment parts remain near a vent. Reconnect the cables only after the exterior is dry and clear. A quick visual check catches the common mistake of leaving a cover, cable or object pressed against an intake.
PS5: cleaning dust beneath the covers
The cited CFI-71XX PS5 Safety Guide adds a limited step for dust trapped under the removable covers: unplug the AC cable, remove the covers according to the instructions for that console, and use a handheld vacuum to remove dust buildup underneath. This is still a dust-collection step, not internal disassembly.
When this extra step makes sense
- You can see dust collected beneath a removable cover even after the exterior vents have been vacuumed.
- You are comfortable identifying your exact PS5 model and following its official cover-removal procedure.
- You can work without forcing a panel, bending a clip or placing pressure on ports and controls.
How to do it conservatively
- Shut the PS5 down and unplug the AC power cord from the rear.
- Place it on a stable, clean surface and identify the model family printed on the console. Cover shapes and removal instructions can differ between revisions.
- Follow the official instructions for that model to release and lift the cover. If a panel does not move with the prescribed motion and moderate hand pressure, stop; do not pry around the edge with a metal tool.
- Use a handheld, low-powered vacuum over the exposed dust-trap areas beneath the cover. Keep the nozzle outside openings and do not press it onto the fan or circuit boards.
- Inspect the panel and its clips, then refit it exactly as the model instructions show. A cover that is not seated can interfere with airflow or rattle.
The CFI-71XX guide’s cover advice applies to that PS5 family. It should not be assumed to describe every PS5 revision, and it does not authorize removal of the fan, heatsink, power supply or other internal assemblies.
PS4: what the official guidance covers
The PS4 CUH-2116AB Safety Guide says to disconnect the AC power cord before cleaning, use a low-powered vacuum when dust accumulates in the vents, and wipe the plastic exterior with a soft, dry cloth. That guidance supports the surface-only procedure above.

The cited PS4 material does not provide the same cover-removal instruction as the cited PS5 guide. Therefore, treat external vacuuming and dry wiping as the standard PS4 maintenance method unless you have the official instructions for your exact PS4 revision and the skills to follow them.
Do not infer that a procedure for one PS4 model applies to another. Original PS4, Slim and Pro systems have different shells, fasteners and internal layouts. A panel that appears removable may conceal clips or screws, and forcing it can turn a dust problem into a broken housing or cable.

For most owners, start in the first row. The second row is a limited PS5 option when the official model instructions make it appropriate. The third row belongs in a repair workflow, not in a quick cleaning session.

Restore airflow after cleaning
Dust removal cannot compensate for a blocked installation. PlayStation’s PS5 support guidance recommends leaving at least 10 cm of free space around the console, keeping every vent unobstructed, avoiding long-fibre rugs and avoiding cramped enclosed spaces. The 10 cm figure is a manufacturer instruction, not a laboratory performance statistic.
- Keep the rear and side vent areas clear of walls, books, curtains and other objects.
- Do not place the console on a long-fibre rug that can cover or feed lint into an intake.
- Do not crowd it inside a narrow cabinet or stack equipment directly against its vents.
- Arrange cables so they do not press against a grille or trap dust beside it.
- Use the console in the orientation supported by its stand or model instructions, with the base stable and all panels fully seated.
If the PlayStation sits on a dusty floor, cleaning the surrounding area matters as much as cleaning the console. Otherwise, the next airflow cycle can draw the same debris back toward the vents.
What not to do
Do not push tools into a vent
A nozzle, brush, screwdriver, compressed-air straw or improvised pick can contact the fan, grille or an internal component. It can also pack dust deeper into the machine. Keep the cleaning attachment outside the opening.

Do not assume compressed air is approved
The official material cited here specifies a low-powered vacuum and, for the PS5 cover area, a handheld vacuum. It does not establish a manufacturer-approved compressed-air procedure. Blowing air can redistribute dust into the console or surrounding room, and the available guidance does not provide a pressure, distance or fan-holding instruction. Use the supported vacuum method instead.
Do not use high suction or a shop vacuum by default
No official source here specifies a particular vacuum or claims that a powerful shop vacuum is safe for console vents. Choose the lowest practical suction and keep the attachment just outside the grille. If the only available vacuum is powerful and cannot be controlled gently, do not improvise a more aggressive technique.
Do not spray or wet the console
Sprays can enter openings, leave residue or damage finishes. Solvents and chemically treated cloths are specifically inappropriate for the cited PS4 safety guidance. Use a dry cloth for exterior plastic.
Do not dismantle internal components for routine dust
Removing a power supply, fan, heatsink or circuit-board assembly is not a normal vent-cleaning step. It introduces electrical, mechanical and reassembly risks that external maintenance is designed to avoid.

Some owners need access beyond the grilles because a fan or internal channel is heavily contaminated. iFixit publishes a guide titled How to Open and Clean a PlayStation 4. That guide includes disassembly and tools such as a dust blower, tweezers, cloth and anti-static brush.

Use that kind of material only as an advanced, model-specific repair path. The guide is PS4-specific; it does not establish that the same sequence applies to every PS4 revision or to PS5. Before attempting it, consider whether you can identify every screw and cable, protect the electronics from static and restore the thermal and mechanical parts correctly. If you cannot, a qualified repair professional is safer than treating internal disassembly as household cleaning.

Do not use an advanced guide to justify opening a console that is still under a retailer or manufacturer service arrangement without checking the applicable terms. More importantly, stop if you encounter a damaged connector, liquid residue, burnt smell or a component that does not match the guide.
Troubleshooting after the vents are clean
The console is still noisy
External dust and poor clearance are only two possible causes of noise. Check that the covers are seated, the console is not touching a wall or shelf, and no object is vibrating against it. If unusual noise persists after those checks, PlayStation’s PS5 support page advises contacting PlayStation rather than assuming another round of vacuuming will solve it.
Do not diagnose a failing fan, bearing or power component from sound alone. A persistent rattle, grinding noise or sudden change in fan behavior warrants support or professional inspection.

Turn it off and let it cool. Verify the 10 cm PS5 clearance recommendation, remove nearby obstructions and repeat only the gentle external cleaning procedure with the AC cord disconnected. If the symptom returns, stop using the console until you have advice from PlayStation or a repair professional. Vent cleaning is not a guarantee against overheating or shutdowns caused by hardware, software, room temperature or a failing component.
A cover will not come off or will not refit
Stop rather than increasing force. Recheck the exact model and the official release direction for its cover. Look for a trapped cable or misaligned clip, and never pry with a metal tool near a port or seam. If the panel remains resistant, leave the console closed and seek model-specific service.
Dust returns quickly
Inspect the installation rather than cleaning more aggressively. Long-fibre carpet, a dusty shelf, a narrow cabinet and nearby fabric can supply a continuing stream of particles. Clean the surrounding surface, improve clearance and keep the vents unobstructed. No official interval is established in the cited sources, so schedule cleaning based on visible accumulation and the environment instead of a fixed calendar promise.

A concise decision checklist
- Only light dust on visible grilles: shut down, unplug, vacuum gently outside the vents and wipe the plastic dry.
- Dust beneath a PS5 cover: use the exact cover instructions for the model, then a handheld low-powered vacuum; refit the cover carefully.
- PS4 dust behind the shell: remain with external cleaning unless you are deliberately undertaking a model-specific repair.
- Noise, heat or shutdown continues: improve clearance once, then contact PlayStation or a repair professional instead of escalating suction or forcing the console open.
- Any liquid, burning smell, damaged panel or loose connector: stop cleaning and seek service.
