Start with the sneakers completely dry: gently brush away loose dirt with a clean suede or nubuck brush, then use a suede eraser only on an isolated dry scuff and brush the nap again. This dry-first approach is the most cautious general method, but no general suede-care guide can guarantee that a particular blue dye will not fade. Check the sneaker maker’s care instructions and test any cleaner or spray on a hidden spot first.
What to use—and what to avoid at first
- Use: a clean, soft suede or nubuck brush for loose dirt and a suede eraser for some localized dry marks.
- Hold off on: water, household cleaners, and liquid suede products until you have checked the sneaker maker’s instructions. Suede is sensitive to moisture, and generic care advice cannot confirm how a particular blue finish will react.
- Do not assume a spot test proves the whole shoe is safe. It can reveal an obvious color change in the test area, but it is not a guarantee against fading or other damage.
Saucony recommends a soft-bristle brush for suede or nubuck, while Björn Borg advises brushing off loose dirt before adding moisture or cleaning products. Adidas likewise says suede sneakers should be dry for its cleaning procedure. How to clean blue suede sneakers
- Check the shoe’s care instructions. Follow the sneaker maker’s directions if they differ from general suede guidance. Remove the laces if they are in the way, and wait until the suede is dry before cleaning.
- Brush off loose dirt. With a clean, soft suede or nubuck brush, use gentle strokes over the surface. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, which can rough up the nap.
- Try an eraser on a dry scuff. Rub a suede eraser lightly over the mark, rather than across the whole shoe. Erasers are included in suede-care guidance from ECCO and Björn Borg; this is an option for some marks, not a fix for every stain.
- Brush again. Once you have finished with the eraser, gently brush the area to smooth the nap. Adidas recommends erasing and then brushing suede sneakers.
- If the mark remains, pause before using liquid. Check the sneaker maker’s instructions before applying a suede cleaner. If the maker permits it, follow the product label and test a hidden area first. Let the shoe dry naturally after treatment, then brush gently once the suede is dry.
Should you use water or suede cleaner?
Do not treat water or liquid cleaner as the default next step. Nike’s suede-cleaning guide describes suede’s sensitivity to moisture, while ECCO describes a dedicated cleaner for more involved care. Neither establishes that a cleaner is compatible with every blue dye or sneaker finish.
If dry brushing and a careful eraser attempt do not lift the mark, consult the shoe maker’s guidance before choosing a suede cleaner. Use only a product intended for suede or nubuck, follow its directions, and test it somewhere inconspicuous. A hidden-area test may help you spot an immediate color change; it cannot certify that the treatment is risk-free.

Optional prevention: protector spray
Saucony says a waterproofing treatment may be used on suede or nubuck if desired. A suede protector spray is optional, not a promise that the color will stay unchanged. Confirm that both the shoe maker and the product label allow it, and test a hidden spot for color change before treating the visible upper. Follow the product’s application and drying directions.
