How to Clean Baby Bottles Before Sterilizing Them

Clean every bottle and removable part before you sterilize (the CDC usually calls this additional step sanitizing). For hand washing, wash your hands, take the bottle apart, rinse each piece, scrub everything in hot soapy water inside a clean basin reserved for infant-feeding items, rinse again, and let the parts air-dry completely. Then use the bottle maker’s approved sanitizing method.

Cleaning removes milk, formula and residue that can protect germs from heat or disinfectant. Sanitizing is an extra germ-removal step, not a substitute for washing. The CDC’s current procedure is explained in How to Clean, Sanitize, and Store Infant Feeding Items.

Why washing comes before sterilizing

A sterilizer, boiling pot or bleach solution is intended for already-clean feeding equipment. Milk film and formula residue can remain inside nipple holes, valves, threads and seams if a bottle is only rinsed. Those deposits make it harder for heat or sanitizer to contact every surface. The CDC therefore says to clean feeding items before sanitizing them.

In CDC terminology, “sanitizing” is the additional step that reduces germs after washing. Many caregivers still say “sterilizing,” and bottle manufacturers may use either word, but the sequence is the same: wash first, sanitize second, dry completely, then store in a protected place. Always check the instructions supplied with your particular bottle, nipple, valve and sterilizer; some plastics, coatings and accessories are not compatible with every method.

When to clean bottles

Clean a bottle after every feeding, even when it appears empty. If a baby does not finish prepared formula within two hours, discard the remaining formula rather than refrigerating it for another feed. A used bottle that is merely rinsed can support rapid germ growth.

Daily sanitizing provides extra germ removal. The CDC places special emphasis on daily or more frequent sanitizing when a baby is younger than two months, was born prematurely, or has a weakened immune system. For an older, healthy baby, daily sanitizing may not be necessary when every item is carefully cleaned after each use, although the manufacturer or your clinician may recommend a stricter schedule.

Set up a clean washing station

Supplies

  • Soap and hot water.
  • A clean basin or container used only for infant-feeding items. Washing directly in a household sink can expose parts to germs and food residue.
  • A clean brush reserved for bottles and feeding equipment. Use a small nipple brush if the manufacturer allows it.
  • A clean, unused dish towel or paper towel for the parts to rest on while they air-dry. The towel is a landing surface, not a drying cloth.
  • Clean hands and a protected drying area away from splashes, pets and food preparation.

Rinse the basin and brush after each use and let them air-dry. For babies younger than two months, babies born prematurely, or babies with weakened immune systems, wash the basin and brush after every use. For other babies, wash them at least every few days and sooner if visibly dirty.

How to hand-wash a baby bottle before sanitizing

Use this sequence for every bottle, including bottles that will later go into a steam unit or boiling water.

  1. Wash your hands for 20 seconds. Use soap and running water, rubbing all hand surfaces before rinsing. Dry with a clean towel or let your hands air-dry.
  2. Disassemble completely. Separate the bottle, nipple, cap, ring, valve, membrane, vent and any anti-colic insert. If a part can be removed according to the manufacturer’s instructions, remove it. Hidden milk is common in valves and membranes.
  3. Rinse immediately. Hold each part under running warm or cold water to remove loose milk. Do not place used parts in the sink while you gather supplies; set them in the dedicated basin or on a clean surface instead.
  4. Prepare the basin. Fill the clean basin with hot water and add dish soap. The basin should be large enough that parts can be fully submerged without touching a dirty sink surface.
  5. Scrub the bottle and accessories. Use the dedicated brush to clean the inside, threads, shoulder and bottom of the bottle. Wash caps, rings and valves with the brush or by hand as appropriate for their shape.
  6. Clear the nipple opening. Wash both sides of the nipple. Squeeze soapy water through every nipple hole, then release it repeatedly so water passes through the channel. If the nipple has more than one vent or slit, clean each opening.
  7. Inspect the small parts while washing. Look for trapped milk, cloudiness, cracks, stretched nipple holes, damaged membranes or a valve that no longer closes. Follow the manufacturer’s replacement guidance for worn parts instead of trying to repair them.
  8. Rinse thoroughly. Rinse each piece under running water, or submerge it in fresh water in a second clean basin reserved for feeding equipment. Continue until no soap film remains and water flows freely through the nipple and valve.
  9. Place parts to air-dry. Put the pieces on a clean, unused dish towel or paper towel in a protected area. Keep openings facing down or positioned so water can drain, but do not stack wet parts together.
  10. Let everything dry completely. Do not rub or pat parts dry with a dish towel. A damp towel can transfer germs and push lint into holes. Drying may take several hours; leave parts separated until no visible moisture remains.
  11. Clean the station. Rinse the basin and brush, remove trapped residue, and let both air-dry. Wash them on the schedule appropriate for your baby’s age and health risk.

Once the parts are fully dry, you can sanitize them using an approved method. If you are not sanitizing immediately, keep the dry, disassembled parts in a clean protected place rather than reassembling them while damp.

Dishwasher cleaning: when it works

Use the dishwasher only when the bottle maker labels every part you are loading as dishwasher-safe. Disassemble and rinse the parts first. Place small pieces such as nipples, valves and membranes in a closed-top dishwasher basket or mesh bag so they do not fall onto the heating element, block the filter or disappear into the drain.

  1. Wash your hands before handling the clean parts.
  2. Load the disassembled, rinsed pieces according to the bottle and dishwasher instructions.
  3. Run a cycle using hot water. A heated-drying cycle or a dishwasher sanitizing setting provides additional germ reduction.
  4. When the cycle ends, remove parts with clean hands. If they are still wet, put them on a clean unused towel or paper towel and allow complete air-drying before assembly.

According to the CDC, a separate sanitizing step is not necessary when the dishwasher uses hot water together with heated drying or a sanitizing setting. If your dishwasher does not provide those conditions, or if a part is not dishwasher-safe, hand-wash it and use the manufacturer-approved sanitizing method instead.

Hand washing or dishwasher? Use this decision guide

Question Hand-washing choice Dishwasher choice
Are all parts approved for the method? Works for parts that are not dishwasher-safe, provided the manufacturer permits hand washing. Use only when the bottle, nipple, valves, membranes and accessories are labeled dishwasher-safe.
What equipment is required? Dedicated clean basin, hot soapy water and a dedicated brush. Dishwasher plus a closed-top basket or mesh bag for small pieces.
How are small openings cleaned? Scrub and squeeze water through nipple holes, vents and valves. Rinse first and position parts so spray can reach all surfaces; inspect them afterward.
When is separate sanitizing unnecessary? Not established by the dishwasher guidance; sanitize according to the product instructions and your baby’s risk factors. CDC says no separate sanitizing step is needed when hot water is combined with heated drying or a sanitizing setting.
What if parts leave the dishwasher wet? Not applicable. Transfer them with clean hands to a clean towel or paper towel and air-dry fully.

No official guidance establishes that one brand of brush, basin or dishwasher basket performs better than another. Clean technique, complete disassembly and thorough drying matter more than a particular product.

How to sanitize after cleaning

Choose a method that the bottle and accessory instructions specifically allow. Sanitizing a part with an incompatible method can warp plastic, damage a membrane or make a nipple unsafe.

Boiling

The CDC’s boiling method calls for five minutes. Begin only after all parts have been washed and rinsed. Keep pieces fully separated so water reaches interior surfaces, and use clean utensils or washed hands to remove them. Place boiled parts on a clean unused towel or paper towel and let them air-dry completely. Do not boil a component that the manufacturer says cannot tolerate boiling.

Steam

Electric and microwave steam devices must be used exactly as their instructions specify, including the water volume, loading arrangement, cycle length and cooling procedure. Steam does not replace the wash: milk residue still needs to be scrubbed away first. Confirm that every piece is approved for the particular steam device, especially thin nipples, valves and bottles with bonded parts.

Unscented bleach solution

The CDC lists a specified unscented-bleach solution as another option. Use the exact dilution, contact time, rinsing and air-drying directions on the CDC page; never improvise the concentration or substitute scented, splashless or mixed cleaning products. Bleach must never be combined with ammonia, acids or other cleaners. Keep the solution and wet equipment away from children, and follow local disposal instructions.

For the complete sanitizing details, consult the CDC procedure and the bottle manufacturer’s instructions. After any method, allow parts to air-dry fully before storage or use.

Drying and storing clean bottles

Moisture trapped inside a bottle, nipple or valve can support new growth after washing or sanitizing. Keep parts separated on a clean, unused towel or paper towel until they are completely dry. A clean towel or paper towel is probably more hygienic than a drying rack because racks can trap moisture and may be difficult to clean.

If you use a rack, reserve it for infant-feeding equipment. Wash, sanitize and dry the rack regularly, and discard it if cracks or inaccessible channels retain residue. Do not wipe parts dry with a shared kitchen towel.

With clean hands, reassemble only when every component is dry. Store the assembled or disassembled set in a clean, protected location such as a closed cabinet used for clean dishes. Keep clean parts away from raw food, pet areas, bathroom splash and dusty countertops. If a dry part falls onto a dirty surface, wash it again before use.

How often to sanitize: practical schedules

Baby’s situation After every feeding Additional sanitizing Basin and brush
Healthy baby older than two months Clean every bottle and part after each feeding. Daily sanitizing may not be necessary when cleaning is careful; follow the product instructions and your clinician’s advice. Rinse and air-dry after each use; wash at least every few days.
Baby younger than two months Clean every bottle and part after each feeding. Sanitize daily or more often for extra germ removal. Wash after every use.
Baby born prematurely Clean every bottle and part after each feeding. Sanitize daily or more often for extra germ removal. Wash after every use.
Baby with a weakened immune system Clean every bottle and part after each feeding. Sanitize daily or more often; ask the child’s clinician if an individualized schedule is needed. Wash after every use.

These are CDC-based general recommendations, not a substitute for medical advice. A clinician may set a different schedule for a baby receiving specialized feeding support or recovering from illness.

Common problems and what to do

The nipple still feels greasy

Disassemble it if the design permits, soak it briefly in hot soapy water, brush both surfaces and squeeze soapy water through the opening. Rinse until the water runs clear. If grease remains, the nipple may be worn or incompatible with the soap or formula; consult the manufacturer and replace it if directed.

Water is trapped in a valve or membrane

Separate the pieces, rinse each one, and position them so water can drain during air-drying. Do not store or reassemble while moisture remains. If the part cannot be opened or dried as the instructions require, replace it rather than sealing moisture inside.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A bottle was left with formula overnight

Discard any formula that exceeded the safe two-hour window, then disassemble and wash the bottle and every part. A quick rinse is not enough.

A cleaned part falls on the floor

Treat it as contaminated: wash it again, rinse it, and sanitize according to the approved method if your baby’s schedule calls for sanitizing. Air-dry before use.

The bottle looks clean but smells sour

Odor usually indicates residue in a thread, valve, membrane or nipple channel. Take the entire bottle apart, scrub hidden surfaces and inspect for cracks. Replace parts that remain odorous or damaged after proper cleaning.

The dishwasher melts or deforms a part

Stop using that part, check the manufacturer’s dishwasher rating and review the dishwasher’s rack position and heat settings. Replace any warped, cracked or weakened component; do not rely on a deformed nipple or valve.

Emergency water and flood situations

Boiling or bleach cannot make water safe when it contains harmful chemicals, toxins or radioactive material. During an emergency, follow instructions from local public-health authorities instead of applying the normal bottle routine. The CDC’s emergency guidance is available at How to Clean Infant Feeding Items During Emergencies.

Floodwater can contaminate porous or hard-to-clean feeding equipment. The CDC advises discarding nipples, pacifiers and other hard-to-clean items that touched floodwater. Do not attempt to rescue a part merely by boiling it when the water may contain chemical or radioactive contaminants.

A repeatable bottle-cleaning checklist

  • Wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.
  • Discard unfinished formula after two hours.
  • Take apart the bottle, nipple, cap, ring, valves and membranes.
  • Rinse parts before placing them in a clean dedicated basin.
  • Scrub with hot soapy water and a dedicated brush; squeeze water through nipple openings.
  • Rinse under running water or in fresh water in a second clean basin.
  • Air-dry every part on a clean unused towel or paper towel.
  • Sanitize daily or more often when the baby is younger than two months, premature or immunocompromised, unless product or medical instructions require otherwise.
  • Wash and air-dry the basin and brush; for higher-risk babies, do this after every use.
  • Reassemble with clean hands only after all pieces are completely dry, then store them in a clean protected place.

Following this order prevents the most common mistake: putting a dirty or damp bottle into a sterilizer and assuming the later step can compensate for incomplete cleaning. For the CDC’s full wording and updates, see the infant-feeding cleaning FAQ.
