Clean optical discs with air and a dry, lint-free cloth, always wiping from the center straight toward the edge. Handle CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays by the edge or center hole; handle vinyl by its edge and label. Store optical discs vertically in individual hub-supporting cases and vinyl records upright in sleeves, in a cool, stable, relatively dry room away from light, heat, vibration, leaks, and environmental extremes.

The methods differ because an optical disc has a data surface and a center hub, while a record has exposed grooves and a paper or printed label. A fluid or case suitable for one format is not automatically suitable for another.

Prepare a safe cleaning area
Clean one item at a time on a clean, dry surface. Wash and dry your hands first, or use clean gloves that do not shed fibers. Keep the disc or record away from grit, food, liquids, and loose paper. Never set an optical disc data-side down or flex it to remove it from a case.
Inspect the item under even light before touching it. Identify loose dust, fingerprints, liquid spots, scratches, mold, or a sticky or waxy deposit. Routine cleaning is appropriate for dust and ordinary handling marks; it is not a substitute for restoration of deep scratches, mold, or chemical damage.
How to clean CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) explicitly includes Blu-ray with CDs and DVDs in its machine-readable-media guidance. Its procedure is conservative and works for routine household handling.

Step 1: Lift the disc correctly
Press the case hub to release the disc, then lift it by the outer edge. If the disc is already out, place a finger through the center hole and support the edge. Do not touch the shiny or colored data surface, bend the disc, or drag it across a table.
Step 2: Remove loose dust without rubbing
Use a photographic air puffer bulb, as NARA recommends, to move loose particles away. Aim across the surface rather than pressing a nozzle against it. Air removes dust; it will not remove fingerprints or dried deposits.

Step 3: Wipe fingerprints from center to edge
For visible fingerprints or similar deposits, use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth dry. Make straight strokes from the center hole toward the outside edge, lifting the cloth after each stroke. Do not wipe around the disc in a circle. NARA warns that circular scratches can be more damaging than scratches that run radially from the center toward the edge; the same warning appears in its machine-readable-media maintenance guidance.
Step 4: Use water only when necessary
If a dry cloth cannot remove a deposit, NARA permits deionized or distilled water. Dampen the cloth lightly rather than pouring liquid onto the disc, then wipe center-to-edge and allow the disc to dry completely before putting it away or playing it. Water left in the case can create additional residue or moisture problems.
Step 5: Treat stubborn residue cautiously
A NIST CD/DVD quick-reference guide lists CD/DVD cleaning detergent, isopropyl alcohol, or methanol for stubborn dirt. That is archival guidance, not a universal instruction for every disc coating or player. Because disc compositions and surface treatments vary, follow the disc or equipment maker’s instructions before using any solvent. Do not casually experiment with household cleaners, abrasive polishes, paper towels, or scraping tools. The NIST guidance is available in NIST SP 500-252.

What to do about scratches
Stop cleaning if a scratch is deep, catches a fingernail, or is associated with playback errors. The cited NARA maintenance procedure does not correct scratches deep enough to affect readability. Do not make the problem worse by sanding, polishing, or wiping in circles. If the content matters, seek a professional data-recovery or media-preservation service and keep another copy when possible.

Handle the record by its edge and label
Keep fingers off the grooves. Hold the record at its outside edge and, when needed, the label area. Skin oils attract dust and can leave deposits in the grooves. Place the record on a clean surface only when that surface cannot scratch or contaminate it.
Remove loose dust gently
The Library of Congress (LOC) says canned air can be used to blow dust from grooved and optical discs. Use short, gentle bursts and follow the air product’s instructions; the goal is to dislodge loose particles, not to blast grit into the grooves. Do not use air as a replacement for removing fingerprints or sticky residue.
Do not improvise a wet-cleaning formula
LOC directs readers to specialist conservation guidance when mold or waxy exudates are present, but its general page does not provide a complete consumer wet-cleaning recipe. For visible mold, an oily or waxy film, an unusually valuable pressing, or a fragile shellac-era disc, isolate the item from clean records and consult a qualified preservation specialist or the relevant manufacturer. Household alcohol, detergents, tap water, and kitchen cleaners can affect labels, sleeves, or groove materials; no single fluid is established as safe for every record.
Routine care is preventive. It cannot reverse groove wear, warping, or a scratch, and aggressive scrubbing can permanently alter the playing surface.
Store CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays safely
Use individual cases that support the hub
Keep each optical disc in its own plastic case that securely holds the center hub. NARA prefers polypropylene cases, and LOC likewise says replacement cases should retain the disc by its center hub. A case prevents the data surface from rubbing against other discs and reduces dust exposure.

Keep cases vertical
Store the cases upright, like books, rather than laying discs in a loose horizontal pile. Vertical storage makes the hub do the supporting work and avoids pressure and abrasion between discs. Replace a cracked case or a broken hub so the disc cannot rattle or slide.
Separate paper inserts when long-term preservation matters
NARA suggests considering separate storage for paper inserts. Paper, inks, and adhesives can deteriorate or transfer material over time. If you remove an insert, identify it clearly and keep it with the disc without allowing it to touch the playing surface.
Remove a disc without flexing it
Press the hub center, lift the disc by the edge, and return it to the hub before closing the case. Never pull one side of a disc upward while the other side remains locked; that flexes the disc and stresses the hub area.
Store vinyl records without warping or crushing them
Keep records upright and unsqueezed
Store records vertically in their sleeves or albums. Do not stack them flat: the weight of a pile can place uneven pressure on the discs and makes it harder to remove one without rubbing neighboring surfaces.
Build shelving that supports the whole collection
Use sturdy shelving with immovable dividers supporting the faces of the records. LOC recommends dividers every 4–6 inches for grooved-disc collections and notes that grooved discs average more than 35 pounds per shelf-foot. Those figures are collection-care recommendations, not a universal shelving standard; verify that your furniture and floor can carry the actual load.

Do not mix different record diameters in one unsupported section. Keep shelves full enough that records remain upright but not so tightly packed that removing one requires bending sleeves or scraping adjacent discs.
Choose inert inner sleeves when replacing worn ones
LOC recommends replacing record sleeves with high-density polyethylene inner sleeves when possible. Keep the record in an outer jacket or album as well, and replace sleeves that are torn, brittle, damp, or shedding particles. Commercial sleeve examples named by LOC are examples of materials and designs, not institutional endorsements.

Cleanliness, moderate conditions, and stability matter more than chasing a single “perfect” number. Keep all formats away from direct or intense light, radiators, heaters, hot electronics, air vents, vibration, flooding, and rapidly changing conditions.

Use a thermometer and hygrometer if the collection is important, and correct persistent dampness or heat at the room level. Uncontrolled attics, basements, and garages are poor choices for valuable collections because leaks, condensation, heat, cold, and humidity can change quickly. Polyethylene or polypropylene bags and bins can provide secondary protection against water, according to LOC. They do not repair a hot or damp room. A sealed bin in a humid location can trap moisture and increase mold risk, so choose a stable storage room first and use a container only as an additional barrier against leaks or handling.

When a disc or record still has a problem
The disc has fingerprints after one pass
Use a fresh section of a lint-free cloth and repeat straight center-to-edge strokes. If the mark is sticky or dried, use only a small amount of distilled or deionized water, then let the disc dry fully. Persistent residue is a reason to consult the maker’s instructions rather than add stronger chemicals.

Check that the disc is clean and dry, try it in a compatible player, and inspect for deep scratches or cracks. Cleaning cannot repair a scratch that has removed or distorted readable information. For unique content, prioritize recovering or copying the data instead of repeatedly rubbing the disc.
A record has mold or a waxy film
Do not return it to a clean shelf or use a random household solution. Keep it separated, avoid spreading particles to other sleeves, and obtain advice from a preservation specialist familiar with the record’s material.
A collection is exposed to a leak or flood
Move unaffected media to a clean, stable room first. Do not seal damp discs or sleeves in plastic for long-term storage; trapped moisture can promote mold. For substantial water exposure or valuable material, contact a professional conservator promptly.
Protect the information on recordable discs
Careful handling reduces avoidable damage but does not guarantee a lifespan. Optical-disc composition varies and is often proprietary. The LOC’s audio/visual materials FAQ notes that even longevity estimates are scoped rather than promises for a particular disc. For important files on recordable CDs, DVDs, or Blu-rays, maintain backups and periodically verify that the disc remains readable. LOC recommends testing a disc on two different machines, which helps distinguish a failing disc from a problem with one drive.

- Blow loose dust away; do not grind it into the surface with a dry wipe.
- For optical-disc fingerprints, wipe center-to-edge with a dry, lint-free cloth.

- Never wipe an optical disc in a circular motion, and do not attempt abrasive scratch repair.
- Return optical discs to individual hub-supporting cases and store the cases vertically.

- Back up irreplaceable recordable-disc data and test copies on two different machines.
These habits follow the handling principles summarized by the National Archives and the Library of Congress: careful handling is one of the most effective and inexpensive preservation measures.
