To clean and sanitize a stainless steel brewing bottle, first remove brewing residue with a rinse and, if needed, a suitable bottle brush or brewing-equipment cleaner. Rinse the cleaner away as directed, then sanitize the clean interior using a brewing sanitizer according to its current label. Avoid chlorine bleach, which can corrode and pit stainless steel.
Clean the bottle before sanitizing it
Cleaning removes visible brewing soil; sanitizing is a separate step for an already clean food-contact surface. Sanitizer is not a substitute for removing residue first. The American Homebrewers Association’s stainless-steel tank-cleaning guidance describes cleaner use separately from sanitation.

- Empty and rinse promptly. Rinse the bottle after use so residue is less likely to dry onto the interior. Blichmann Engineering’s stainless-steel instructions recommend cleaning brewing equipment soon after use.
- Brush visible residue. Use a bottle brush suited to the bottle’s interior, taking care not to scrape or damage its finish. A brush is a physical cleaning aid; it does not sanitize the bottle. A retailer lists a traditional brush for 12–22 oz beer bottles, but that size range does not guarantee fit for a particular stainless bottle. See iMadeBeer’s bottle-brush listing.
- Use brewing-equipment cleaner if needed. Choose a cleaner intended for brewing equipment and follow its current label for dilution, temperature, and contact time. The AHA article describes PBW directions for stainless brewing tanks, but its tank dose and procedure are not a universal bottle recipe.
- Rinse the cleaner away. Follow the cleaner label’s rinse directions before moving on to sanitizer.
Sanitize the clean interior
Choose a brewing sanitizer whose current label permits use on the bottle’s materials. Follow its stated dilution, ensure the clean interior is covered for the required contact time, and observe whether the label requires rinsing. Ss Brewtech’s Star San FAQ says, “Star San will sanitize a clean surface after 60 seconds of contact time,” and describes it as no-rinse. Check the current product label rather than assuming those directions apply to every product or remain unchanged.

Northern Brewer’s Star San product page lists a dilution of 1 oz per 5 gallons and contact time of 1 to 2 minutes. Those are retailer-published directions; verify the current manufacturer label before use.

Keep chlorine bleach away from stainless steel
Do not use chlorine bleach to clean or sanitize stainless brewing equipment. Blichmann’s manual states: “Bleach should not be used to clean or sanitize stainless steel as it will corrode and pit them.” Ss Brewtech likewise warns that chlorinated bleach and other chlorine products can cause irreparable damage to stainless steel (see its Star San FAQ). Also avoid leaving any chemical solution in contact longer than its label specifies. Dry the bottle after cleaning if its manufacturer’s instructions allow.
Check the bottle, lid, and seal instructions
Stainless bottles can include closures, seals, or finishes with different material and temperature limits. Follow the bottle maker’s current care instructions for those parts, as well as the steel body. The available general brewing-equipment guidance does not establish one chemical, temperature, soak time, or passivation procedure for every stainless brewing bottle. Tank-specific instructions—including tank-cleaning doses and passivation schedules—should not be treated as routine bottle-care directions.
