For ordinary dirt and surface marks, clean suede sneakers with dry tools: let mud dry, brush gently, use a suede eraser only where needed, then brush again to lift the nap. Avoid washing the shoes with soap and water or putting them in a washing machine. A suede-compatible protectant is optional; it may reduce water-stain risk, but it does not make suede waterproof and can darken light-colored material.

How to clean suede sneakers
- Prepare the shoe. Remove the laces if they are in the way. Insert a shoe tree or loosely stuff the shoe with clean paper to help it keep its shape. Nike recommends a shoe tree or crumpled newspaper in its suede-shoe cleaning guide.
- Let wet dirt dry. If the sneakers are muddy or damp, leave them to dry at room temperature before brushing. Nike warns that brushing while the material is wet can cause a stain. Do not use a tumble dryer.
- Brush off loose dirt. Use a suede brush or toothbrush with a light touch, following the nap’s direction where practical. Avoid forceful scrubbing, which can rough up the finish.
- Erase remaining surface marks. Rub a dry suede eraser gently over the mark. Timberland cautions that aggressive use of an eraser bar on finished suede can dull or damage the finish; stop if the area changes appearance or looks abraded.
- Brush again. Once the shoe is dry, brush gently to lift and even the nap. Timberland’s Product Care FAQs says brushing at the end is important for bringing the nap back.
Why avoid washing suede sneakers?
Nike does not recommend putting suede shoes in a washing machine or hand washing them with soap and water. For drying after cleaning, Nike suggests stuffing the shoes with newspaper or airing them in front of a fan; it warns that a dryer can damage shoes. For routine surface dirt, dry brushing and an eraser are the lower-risk starting points.

How to protect suede after cleaning
A suede-compatible protectant is optional if you want to reduce the risk of water stains. Use only a product whose label says it is suitable for suede, and follow its application and drying directions rather than assuming a universal spray distance, number of coats, or reapplication schedule. Apply it in a ventilated area if the label directs, and test a hidden patch first—especially on pale suede. Timberland says its Balm Proofer can be used on suede after drying, while warning that it may darken lighter suede. Let the shoes dry fully before wearing them.
