The safest suede-sneaker routine is mostly dry: let mud or moisture dry completely, brush away loose dirt with a suede or soft-bristle brush, and use a clean suede eraser or cleaning block only on localized marks. If dirt remains, use a suede-appropriate cleaner sparingly with a damp cloth—never soak the upper. After air-drying, brush with the nap’s natural grain to bring back the texture. A protector spray can help repel water and dirt, but it does not make suede waterproof.
Because suede colors, finishes and mixed-material constructions differ, the sneaker maker’s care label takes priority. The sequence below combines the common guidance from Vagabond, Saucony, Nike and ECCO while identifying where their instructions are brand-specific.

Why suede needs a different cleaning method
Suede has a raised surface, commonly called the nap. That texture is what gives suede sneakers their soft, matte appearance, but it also shows changes in direction, pressure and moisture more readily than smooth leather. A forceful scrub, excess liquid or heat can leave an uneven-looking surface even when the dirt is gone.
For that reason, cleaning should progress from the least aggressive method to the most involved one: dry brushing first, a suede eraser or cleaning block for a small mark, and only then a small amount of suitable cleaner. Nike’s care guide says to let mud or moisture dry before brushing, avoid cleaning suede while it is wet, and avoid drenching it. Vagabond, Saucony and ECCO likewise put light brushing and controlled moisture at the center of their care instructions.

“Dry first” does not mean putting the sneaker beside a radiator or using a hair dryer. Heat can dry one area faster than another and may affect the shoe’s shape or finish. Air-drying is the safer default.
What you need before you begin
Check the shoe’s own instructions
Look at the tongue label, box paperwork or the maker’s online care page. A sneaker may combine suede with mesh, coated leather, textile, rubber or printed details that require different products. Follow any instruction that is more specific than this general routine, especially for brightly colored suede, unusual finishes or a shoe marked as not washable.
Gather the minimum useful tools
- A suede brush or another clean, soft-bristle brush. Nike mentions a suede brush or toothbrush for surface dirt; Saucony specifies a soft-bristle brush.
- A clean suede eraser or suede cleaning block for dry, localized scuffs. Vagabond calls a cleaning block useful for tougher marks, while Nike recommends a clean suede eraser for surface marks.
- A cleaner whose label explicitly says it is suitable for suede or nubuck, if brushing and erasing are not enough.
- A clean, lint-free cloth and a small amount of water for applying cleaner—not for soaking the shoe.
- Plain paper or a shoe tree to support the shape while the sneaker dries, if the shoe’s instructions permit it.
- An optional suede/nubuck protector spray for the final step.
Keep separate brushes and cloths for different colors when possible. Residue from a dark shoe can transfer to a light one, and a dirty brush can put the very debris you removed back onto the nap.

Take out the laces and insoles only when the shoe maker permits it. ECCO includes this preparation in its own sequence, but it is not a universal requirement. Removing them can improve access around the tongue and eyelets; leaving them in can avoid stretching or disturbing components that are not intended to be removed.
Choose the tool by the problem
| Problem | First choice | How to use it | Main risk to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loose dust, grit or dried surface dirt | Suede or soft-bristle brush | Use light strokes, following the existing nap where possible. | Grinding grit into the fibers with hard, repeated scrubbing. |
| One dry scuff or small mark | Clean suede eraser | Work the mark gently with restrained pressure, then brush away residue. | Rubbing hard enough to create a shiny or bald-looking patch. |
| A tougher localized mark | Suede cleaning block | Use it only on the affected area and follow its packaging directions. | Expanding a small spot into a larger abraded area. |
| Dirt that remains after dry treatment | Suede-safe cleaner and damp cloth | Apply a small amount to the cloth and treat gradually; do not drench the upper. | Water rings, prolonged wetness or cleaner residue. |
| Future water and dirt exposure | Suede/nubuck protector spray | Apply to the upper as directed and allow it to dry before wearing. | Assuming the spray makes the shoe waterproof. |
The brush, eraser/block and protector solve different jobs. A protector is preventative, not a substitute for cleaning; an eraser is for a mark, not a replacement for brushing the whole shoe.
Step-by-step: clean suede sneakers while preserving the nap
1. Let mud or moisture dry completely
Do not start brushing a wet suede upper. Set the sneakers in a ventilated place at room temperature and let the moisture leave naturally. If the upper is wet or muddy, place a shoe tree or loosely crumpled paper inside if allowed; this helps support the shape while it dries. Replace damp paper rather than leaving it in place indefinitely.

Do not use a tumble dryer, hair dryer, radiator or other direct heat source. Nike specifically recommends air drying and says not to clean suede while it is wet. Waiting may feel slower, but it prevents you from spreading wet dirt and pressing it deeper into the nap.

Work over a dry towel or a surface that can be brushed clean. Remove loose laces or insoles only if permitted, and keep the sneaker supported so you can use a light, controlled touch. If the shoe has contrasting suede panels, plan to clean one panel at a time and wipe the brush between colors.
3. Brush away loose debris
Once dry, hold the sneaker securely and brush gently. Start with short strokes over the dirtiest areas, then cover the rest of the upper so the nap has a consistent appearance. Use the brush to lift dried mud, dust and grit rather than forcing it into the material. A soft-bristle brush is appropriate; a suede brush is designed for this job, and Nike also lists a clean toothbrush as an option for surface dirt.
Pause frequently to inspect the result. If the mark is disappearing, stop brushing instead of continuing for the sake of uniformity. Excess passes add wear without adding cleaning.
4. Treat a remaining dry scuff with an eraser or block
For a small mark that remains after brushing, use a clean suede eraser or cleaning block. Keep the pressure light and confine the strokes to the mark. Nike cautions against rubbing too hard, and the same restraint matters with a cleaning block.

5. Use cleaner only when dry methods are insufficient
Choose a product labeled for suede or nubuck and read both the shoe maker’s and cleaner’s directions. Put a small amount of the cleaner on a damp cloth, not directly onto the upper, unless the product instructions explicitly say otherwise. Work in a controlled area with light passes. The aim is to loosen persistent dirt while keeping moisture to a minimum.
Do not saturate the nap or immerse the sneaker. Nike warns against excess liquid, and Vagabond’s method pairs shoe cleaner with a damp cloth rather than a soaked shoe. If the cloth becomes dirty, refold it to expose a clean section so you are lifting soil instead of redistributing it.
For a shoe with multiple materials, keep cleaner on the suede portions unless the label says it is safe for the other panels. Avoid allowing colored runoff to sit on a lighter panel or trim.

6. Allow a full air-dry
After cleaning, leave the sneaker at room temperature until it is dry throughout. Keep the shoe supported with a shoe tree or paper if that is compatible with its care instructions. Do not judge the final color or texture while the nap is damp; moisture can temporarily make an area look darker or flatter.
7. Reset the nap after drying
When the sneaker is fully dry, brush it again with light strokes in the direction of the natural grain. Vagabond’s care guide specifically says that brushing with the grain helps restore the original texture. This final pass removes any dried residue and aligns the fibers so the cleaned area blends with the rest of the upper.
If the nap looks different in one direction, use fewer, gentler strokes rather than pressing harder. The objective is to lift and orient the surface, not to polish it flat.

8. Apply optional protection
If you want additional resistance to everyday water and dirt, use a protector spray intended for suede or nubuck. Apply it across the upper according to the product directions, maintain the stated distance and coverage, and let the sneaker dry completely before wearing it. Vagabond recommends spraying the upper and allowing it to dry; Saucony says a waterproofing treatment may be used if desired.
Call the result water and dirt repellency, not waterproofing. A protector may reduce how readily moisture and grime are absorbed, but it cannot guarantee that the suede will stay dry in heavy rain, puddles or prolonged exposure. Reapply only as the product label or shoe maker recommends, and do not layer unknown products.

Wet mud on the toe or sidewall
Leave the mud alone until it is dry, support the shoe’s shape, and then brush it away. Breaking up wet mud with a brush spreads pigment and moisture across a larger area. After the dry material is gone, use an eraser for a residual scuff before considering cleaner.
A dark water mark or uneven patch
First allow the sneaker to dry fully; a damp patch can look more severe than it is. Brush with the grain after drying. If a ring remains, do not repeatedly flood just that spot. Consult the shoe maker’s instructions for that specific suede and color before attempting a broader cleaner treatment, because the correct approach can vary by finish.
A shiny spot caused by rubbing
Stop using pressure on the area. Brush lightly once the shoe is dry and compare it with the surrounding nap. An eraser or block may help with a localized surface mark, but aggressive rubbing can enlarge the shiny patch. If the surface remains visibly altered, the care instructions for that sneaker should take precedence over further home treatment.

Mixed-material sneakers
Map the upper before cleaning. Suede panels may need the dry process described here, while mesh, coated surfaces and printed details may have different limits. Masking or covering adjacent panels can reduce accidental transfer, but the shoe maker’s instructions remain the authority. Never assume a cleaner safe for suede is automatically safe for every material on the sneaker.
Mistakes that change suede’s appearance
| Mistake | What can happen | Safer correction |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning while the shoe is still wet | Wet dirt can spread, and brushing can press it into the nap. | Air-dry first, then brush. |
| Soaking the upper | Excess moisture can leave uneven-looking areas and prolong drying. | Use a damp cloth with a small amount of suede-safe cleaner. |
| Scrubbing hard with a brush or eraser | The treated patch may look flatter, shinier or different from the surrounding nap. | Use light pressure, inspect often and stop when the mark lifts. |
| Applying direct heat | Uneven drying can affect the shoe’s appearance or shape. | Air-dry at room temperature with support if allowed. |
| Using an unapproved household cleaner | The product may not be suitable for suede, its color or another panel. | Use only a product labeled for suede or nubuck and follow its directions. |
| Spraying protector on a damp shoe or wearing it immediately | The treatment may not dry evenly. | Apply as directed to a dry upper and wait until fully dry. |
| Assuming protector spray makes suede waterproof | You may expose the sneaker to conditions it cannot withstand. | Treat protection as help repelling water and dirt, not a waterproof guarantee. |
When to stop and seek the maker’s guidance
Pause home cleaning if the sneaker has a valuable or unusual finish, a strong dye transfer, a large unknown stain, or several materials that the cleaner label does not address. Also stop if a small treatment area becomes lighter, darker, shiny or flatter than the surrounding suede. Continuing to work the whole shoe can turn a contained mark into a broad change in texture.
Use the maker’s instructions before treating colored suede, limited-edition finishes or shoes with glued-on decorations. ECCO’s sequence, for example, includes brushing, cleaner, drying, an eraser or brush, conditioner and repellent, but that does not make every ECCO step appropriate for every other sneaker. Brand-specific sequences are examples, not universal rules.

A simple maintenance routine
After ordinary wear, brush off loose dry dirt before it accumulates. Deal with a small dry scuff using an eraser or block rather than wet-cleaning the entire upper. If the shoe becomes wet, dry it naturally before any brushing. A protector spray is optional and should be used only when its label and the sneaker maker’s instructions support it.
There is no universal cleaning interval that fits every suede sneaker. Frequency depends on how often the shoe is worn, the surfaces it encounters and the maker’s care instructions. Inspect the nap and seams after wear; clean when dirt is visible or before it becomes embedded, while avoiding unnecessary repeated treatments.
What the official care guides agree on
Vagabond’s “Suede Care | Clean, care & protect” page, accessed October 13, 2026, recommends a suede brush, cleaning block, cleaner applied with a damp cloth, drying, brushing with the grain and optional protector spray. Saucony’s “Care Instructions – Suede,” accessed the same date, advises a soft-bristle brush and says a waterproofing treatment may be used if desired. Nike’s “How to Clean Suede Shoes,” last updated October 16, 2023 and accessed October 13, 2026, advises drying mud or moisture before brushing, using an eraser for surface marks, and avoiding excess liquid or force. ECCO’s “How to Clean Your Suede Shoes,” accessed October 13, 2026, presents a brand-specific sequence that also includes cleaner, drying, conditioning and repellent.
Taken together, those instructions support a conservative order: dry the shoe, brush lightly, erase only localized marks, introduce minimal cleaner only when necessary, air-dry, brush with the grain, and protect optionally. None supports describing a spray as a guarantee of waterproofing, and none makes one cleaner suitable for every suede type, color or mixed-material sneaker.
