The safest way to clean and protect outdoor furniture is to identify its frame, finish, and fabric first, then use the gentlest care method allowed by the manufacturer. In most cases that means removing loose debris, washing with mild soap and water, rinsing when directed, and drying completely. Before prolonged rain, winter weather, or coastal exposure, remove cushions, move furniture to shelter or cover it with a clean, dry, well-fitting cover, and never trap moisture underneath.
Start with the furniture’s care instructions
Outdoor furniture is not one material. All-weather wicker, natural teak, powder-coated aluminum, and performance fabrics tolerate different cleaners, pressure, moisture, and treatments. Find the care label, manual, or manufacturer’s product-care page before using bleach, solvents, a pressure washer, teak products, or a water-repellent treatment. If the label conflicts with general advice, the label wins.

Record the main components before cleaning: frame material, surface finish, hardware, cushion filling, and upholstery fabric. A chair may combine a powder-coated frame with sling fabric and plastic feet; each part can have separate limits. Test any approved cleaner on a hidden area first and stop if the finish changes color, becomes cloudy, or feels tacky.

- Choose a dry, mild day. Cleaning in direct, intense sun can make soap dry on the surface before you rinse it. Avoid cleaning when rain is about to begin.
- Remove loose dirt. Use a soft-bristle brush, microfiber cloth, or a vacuum with a suitable attachment. Lift leaves from joints, slats, weave openings, and cushion seams rather than grinding them into the finish.
- Mix mild soap and water. Use a small amount of mild dish soap or the cleaner named in the care instructions. Stronger is not better; concentrated chemicals can strip finishes or discolor fabric.
- Wash with a soft tool. Wipe hard surfaces with a soft cloth or sponge. Use a soft brush where texture or weave needs agitation. Keep the tool clean so grit does not scratch the finish.
- Rinse only as directed. Residue should be rinsed from materials whose instructions call for rinsing. A gentle hose flow is different from a high-pressure jet; keep water away from openings and electrical components.
- Dry completely. Wipe hard surfaces with a soft, dry cloth. Stand cushions so air can circulate and leave them out until the cover and filling are fully dry.
- Deal with spills promptly. Blot liquids with an undyed absorbent cloth instead of rubbing them deeper into fabric. Remove food, sunscreen, and bird droppings before they harden.
- Inspect after cleaning. Look for chipped coating, loose fasteners, cracked weave, mold, rust stains, and water held in frame tubes. Repair or replace damaged parts before the next period of bad weather.
An outdoor textile care guide puts the moisture risk plainly: “Please do not let water sit on your furniture‘s surface or cushions for too long—moisture can lead to damage.” Drying is therefore part of cleaning, not an optional finishing step.

Protect furniture before heavy rain, winter, and long periods outdoors
Remove cushions and upholstery
Take cushions indoors or place them in a genuinely dry, ventilated storage area before prolonged rain. If a cushion is soaked, stand it on its side with the zipper open so water can drain, then let it air-dry completely. Do not put wet cushions into a sealed deck box or plastic bag; trapped humidity can encourage mildew and leave the filling damp even when the surface feels dry.
Cover or shelter the frame
For winter, heavy rain, or other extended inclement weather, move furniture under a roof or use a cover designed for its shape and size. A suitable cover reduces exposure to rain, dirt, mold spores, and sun, but it cannot make damp furniture safe. Clean and dry both the furniture and the cover before covering, and leave enough ventilation for residual humidity to escape.
Keep covers clean and dry
Inspect a cover after storms. Remove leaves and standing water, and spot-clean it with a damp cloth when the care instructions permit. Dry the cover before putting it back on. A dirty, wet cover can transfer grime to the furniture and hold moisture against the finish.

Secure covers so they do not flap against painted or powder-coated surfaces. Do not block designed drainage openings, and do not stack furniture where water can pool in seats or frame channels. After a storm, uncover the set, empty pooled water, and allow every component to dry before covering it again.
Care by material
All-weather wicker
All-weather wicker is made from synthetic strands, but the weave can trap leaves, grit, and moisture. KETTLER’s care instructions recommend removing trapped debris with a vacuum or soft-bristle brush, wiping loose dirt with a damp cloth, and washing with a mild soap solution. A medium-setting spray hose may help loosen dirt when the furniture’s instructions allow it.

Do not use a high-power pressure washer on this wicker. KETTLER specifically warns that bleach and abrasive cleaners can permanently damage its all-weather wicker. A pressure jet can stretch or split strands, force water into the frame, and drive grit under the weave. Rinse gently if required, then turn or position the piece so hidden areas can dry.
Natural teak
Untreated natural teak changes appearance outdoors. Arhaus explains that its warm golden color gradually fades to a silvery-grey patina under sun and rain. That color change is a normal aging choice, not automatically a defect. If you prefer the original warmer appearance, a suitable cover reduces exposure and helps protect against mold and dirt; if you like the silver patina, you can allow weathering while still cleaning and drying the wood.

For routine cleaning, Arhaus recommends a nonmetallic soft-bristle brush and teak cleaner, or warm water with mild dish soap. Brush with the grain, rinse thoroughly, and allow the wood to dry completely. Do not assume teak oil is required for every teak item: oiling is a finish preference, while cleaning, drainage, and protection from prolonged wetness address weather damage. Use only a product approved for your specific teak finish.
Powder-coated aluminum
Dust powder-coated aluminum weekly with a soft cloth or brush. Remove loose debris with a soft brush or hose, then periodically wash with mild soap and water and wipe with a soft cloth, following the manufacturer’s rinsing directions. Dry around joints and fasteners.
The coating protects the metal but can be chipped. Arhaus advises avoiding impacts and dragging objects across the surface. Lift tables and chairs instead of scraping them over concrete, and place protective pads under items that may strike the frame. Once the coating is chipped, treat the exposed area according to the manufacturer’s repair guidance rather than sanding broadly or applying an unapproved paint.

Cushions and outdoor upholstery
Brush cushions weekly to remove grit before it works into the weave. Blot stains with an undyed absorbent cloth, apply a mild cleaner compatible with the fabric, rinse as directed, and air-dry. Avoid hard scrubbing, which can roughen fibers and spread a stain. Do not use a clothes dryer unless the care label expressly permits it; heat and tumbling can damage covers, coatings, or foam.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSome fabrics have brand-specific mildew instructions. Arhaus provides a diluted-bleach method for its InsideOut Performance Fabrics, but that permission must not be generalized to other outdoor fabrics. Never apply bleach to a cushion unless the exact fabric-care label authorizes the concentration and method. For an unknown fabric, use the label’s approved cleaner or consult the furniture maker.
Open zippers when cushions are drying so air reaches the filling. Store dry cushions vertically or on edge when practical, with no heavy object compressing them. Reinstall them only after seams, piping, underside panels, and filling are dry.
Outdoor covers
Choose a cover that fits without leaving large openings for wind-driven rain and without pressing tightly against sharp corners. Pad protruding edges if the cover maker permits it. Spot-clean the cover with a damp cloth when appropriate, and never cover damp furniture. Remove the cover periodically during long storage to inspect for condensation, pests, trapped leaves, or standing water.
Adjust the routine to your exposure
| Situation | What to do | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Routine outdoor use | Brush or dust regularly, wash with mild soap and water when dirty, rinse as directed, and dry hard surfaces and fabrics fully. | Leaving spills, leaves, or wet cushions in place for days. |
| Heavy rain or winter | Clean and dry the set, remove cushions to a dry location, then move the frame under shelter or cover it with a clean, dry, suitable cover. | Covering damp furniture, sealing wet cushions in storage, or allowing water to pool. |
| Coastal or salty air | Wash often enough to remove salt deposits, using the material’s approved mild-cleaning method, then rinse and dry thoroughly. | Letting salt remain on finishes, hardware, or fabric; salt deposits can corrode finishes or materials. |
| Preserving teak’s warm color | Use a suitable cover and follow the teak finish instructions. | Assuming all teak needs oil or using an unapproved product. |
| Accepting teak’s natural patina | Allow the wood to weather toward silvery grey while continuing gentle cleaning and moisture control. | Treating normal color change as damage or scrubbing aggressively to reverse it. |
Water-repellent treatments for outdoor fabric
Fabric repellency is a treatment choice, not a substitute for drainage, drying, or a cover. Check the cushion’s care label and the treatment manufacturer’s compatibility instructions before spraying. Test a hidden section, protect nearby frame surfaces, and apply only in the ventilation and temperature conditions stated on the product.

A separate outdoor textile care guide recommends refreshing a compatible water-repellent coating at least once per season, or sooner if water stops beading on the surface. That is the guide’s maintenance recommendation, not a universal interval. If the fabric is laminated, already coated, or labeled non-treatable, do not add another product.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using a pressure washer because the dirt is stubborn
High pressure can strip finishes, deform wicker, force water into joints, and damage seams. Stop and switch to a soft brush, mild soap, and the gentlest rinse allowed by the care instructions. If embedded dirt remains, repeat the mild process after drying instead of increasing pressure.
Reaching for bleach or abrasive powder
Bleach and abrasives are not universal outdoor cleaners. KETTLER warns that both can permanently damage its all-weather wicker, and other materials may react differently. Use bleach only where the exact fabric or finish instructions authorize it; otherwise choose a compatible mild cleaner.
Covering furniture while it is damp
Uncover the furniture, remove cushions, and create airflow. Wipe hard surfaces, drain water from frames, and wait until fabric, seams, and the underside are dry before covering.
Scrubbing a stain until the fabric looks rough
Blot first, use a mild compatible cleaner, and rinse as directed. Hard scrubbing can spread the stain and abrade fibers. Persistent stains may require the fabric maker’s specific procedure or professional cleaning.

Dragging coated metal across the ground
Lift the furniture and inspect the contact points. Dragging can chip powder coating and expose metal to corrosion. Use suitable feet or pads rather than improvised abrasive materials.
Ignoring hidden moisture
Check under cushions, inside wicker, beneath table edges, around fasteners, and in frame channels. Rotate or reposition pieces so these areas can dry, and repair blocked drainage openings.
A practical maintenance calendar
| Interval | Tasks |
|---|---|
| After spills or storms | Blot or remove debris promptly, empty pooled water, open cushion zippers for drainage, and dry all components. |
| Weekly during active use | Brush cushions and wicker, dust powder-coated aluminum, remove leaves, and check that covers are not trapping moisture. |
| Every few weeks or when visibly dirty | Wash with the approved mild soap solution, rinse where directed, and inspect seams, weave, coating, and hardware. |
| Before winter or extended bad weather | Deep-clean gently, remove and dry cushions, repair damage, and place the dry furniture under shelter or under a clean, dry cover. |
| At least once per season for treated fabric | Check whether water still beads. Refresh a compatible repellency treatment only when the care label and product instructions permit it. |
| In coastal locations | Increase washing frequency enough to remove salt deposits before they remain on finishes, hardware, or fabric. |
Choosing the right level of protection
If you can store cushions indoors, do so whenever prolonged rain is forecast; cushions are usually the least tolerant part of a set. If the frame can be moved under a roof, shelter is preferable to relying on a cover alone. When neither is possible, use a well-fitted cover, maintain ventilation, inspect after storms, and keep the cover and furniture dry before re-covering.
Recommended Free Tools
Appearance also affects the decision. Teak owners who want a silvery-grey patina can focus on gentle cleaning and moisture control, while owners who want more of the original golden color should cover the wood for longer periods. For every material, the durable baseline remains the same: follow the specific instructions, clean gently, remove standing moisture, and give wet components time and airflow to dry.
