How to Clean and Maintain Vintage Game Cartridges and Consoles

For Nintendo’s NES, SNES, N64, and Game Boy-family systems, keep routine cleaning conservative: use a soft, slightly damp cloth with water only on the supported exterior components, and keep moisture, fingers, breath, and solvents away from cartridge connectors. Turn the console off before handling a cartridge, and do not use a cleaned component until it is completely dry.

Before cleaning: identify the surface and system

Exterior plastic and electrical contacts need different treatment. Nintendo’s guidance for NES, SNES, and N64 components permits a soft cloth dampened with water, but gives stricter precautions for Game Pak connectors. Its handheld-care guidance covers systems including Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. These instructions are specific to the models and components covered by Nintendo; they are not established as universal guidance for every vintage console brand.

  • Switch off a cartridge-based console before inserting or removing a Game Pak.
  • Check the cartridge edge connector for foreign material before insertion, and never force a cartridge into place.
  • For a handheld, power the system off and unplug accessories before cleaning.

Clean exterior surfaces without wetting the system

For the NES, SNES, and N64 components covered by Nintendo’s support guidance, use a soft cloth that is only slightly damp, with water only. Wipe the surface rather than pouring or spraying liquid onto the component. Let it dry completely before use. A soft cotton cloth is a suitable choice for this exterior cleaning.

For handhelds, Nintendo likewise cautions against pouring liquid directly on the system or submerging it. Keep liquid away from openings and accessories, and do not use the device until it is completely dry. See Nintendo’s handheld system cleaning guidance for the systems it covers.

Protect cartridge connectors

Do not touch, blow on, wet, or deliberately soil the cartridge connectors. Nintendo’s guidance says to check for foreign material before insertion and explicitly warns: “Do not clean with benzene, paint thinner, alcohol or any other solvent.” Do not use alcohol, sprays, or abrasive erasers on connectors as a general cleaning method. Nintendo’s NES, SNES, and N64 cartridge and component guidance treats the contacts differently from exterior surfaces.

If a connector appears dirty or damaged, the cited guidance does not establish a safe do-it-yourself cleaning or repair procedure for it. Avoid improvised methods, and consult support or a repair professional familiar with the specific model rather than applying advice for another system.

What to avoid—and why advice can conflict

  • Do not blow on contacts. Nintendo specifically warns against it.
  • Do not use solvent on Game Paks. The current general Nintendo guidance explicitly rules out alcohol and other solvents.
  • Do not pour liquid on or submerge a handheld. Power it off and unplug accessories before cleaning.
  • Do not assume an archived method is current general advice. A historical NES Cleaning Kit manual describes a model-specific isopropyl alcohol-and-water method, but that does not override Nintendo’s current general warning against solvents on Game Paks. The archived manual’s original date and present applicability are not established.
  • Do not extend Nintendo’s instructions to every manufacturer or model. Equivalent guidance for all vintage consoles is not established here.

After cleaning: dry fully before reconnecting or playing

Do not power on or use a cleaned component until it has dried completely. For a handheld, reconnect accessories only after cleaning is finished and the system is dry. Before inserting a cartridge, make sure the console is off and inspect the edge connector for foreign material; do not force the cartridge if it does not insert normally.
