Rinse removable pads gently, refill with fresh water, and dry the wetted media with fan-only operation before storing the cooler. The right cleaning interval and any approved treatment vary by model, water quality, and use.
Before you start: make the cooler safe to clean
- Turn the cooler off and unplug it before draining water, opening a panel, or cleaning any part.
- Move it to a place where draining water will not damage floors or nearby surfaces.
- Check the exact owner’s manual before removing panels or pads, and use only cleaners it allows. Cooler construction and care instructions vary.
How to clean the water tank and cooling pads
- Drain the reservoir. Empty the water and wipe away debris and residue with a soft cloth. Use only a cleaner allowed by the manual. Some Honeywell manuals call for rinsing with clean water and draining again, and warn against corrosive chemicals (Honeywell portable cooler user manual).
- Rinse removable media as directed. Remove cooling pads only if the manual explains how. Rinse with fresh water. For dry honeycomb media with buildup, Honeywell says a soft brush may be used; do not scrub other media types unless their manufacturer permits it (Honeywell maintenance FAQ).
- Reinstall and refill. Return pads in the marked orientation if applicable, then refill with clean water. Follow the model’s restart instructions and check that water circulates normally.
How often to drain and clean it
There is no single schedule that applies to every portable cooler. Follow the model manual and adjust for use and local water conditions. Honeywell describes a typical weekly routine that includes draining and refreshing tank water, rinsing media, and brushing buildup when dry. A Honeywell model manual says to refresh tank water at least weekly and notes that media may need cleaning every two months or sooner depending on conditions. These are product-specific examples, not universal intervals (Honeywell maintenance FAQ; Honeywell portable cooler user manual).

If water has been standing, drain it, clean the tank as directed, and refill before using cooling mode. Regularly replacing tank water with fresh water helps limit mineral deposits. Hard water can leave deposits that restrict airflow, so inspect the pads and clean them as the manual allows.
Dry the media after use and before storage
At the end of a cooling session, turn off the water or cooling function and run fan-only mode until the media is dry. Honeywell suggests about 15 minutes for the product family covered by its FAQ; actual drying time depends on the cooler and conditions. ASHRAE’s technical guidance is to run fans after turning off water until the media is completely dry (Honeywell maintenance FAQ; ASHRAE, Chapter 41: Evaporative Air-Cooling Equipment, 2020 Handbook).

For extended or seasonal storage, drain the reservoir, wipe the tank and media dry, and follow the manual’s storage steps. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Solution Center recommends draining and cleaning the pan during seasonal shutdown and emptying it if the unit will sit idle for more than a few days (DOE Building America Solution Center). Portacool likewise advises draining the tank and wiping the tank and media dry for storage (Portacool Cyclone Series Maintenance & Care).
Removing mineral buildup and deciding when to replace pads
Begin with regular draining and fresh refills, then rinse removable media as the manual directs. The available guidance does not establish one chemical, dilution, or descaling recipe for all household portable coolers. Honeywell recommends replacing its honeycomb media approximately every 3–6 months depending on use and maintenance; that estimate applies to its covered media, not every cooler. Replace media if it is deteriorated or remains dirty after approved cleaning, and verify the replacement part matches the exact model (Honeywell maintenance FAQ; Honeywell portable cooler user manual).
Do not assume vinegar, bacteriostatic products, or other water treatments are safe for every unit. Honeywell’s FAQ discusses a small amount of vinegar or an appropriate bacteriostatic treatment for the product family it covers; use such treatment only if the exact cooler manual approves it. Portacool also describes a brand-specific treatment for its equipment, which should not be treated as a general-purpose additive (Honeywell maintenance FAQ; Portacool Cyclone Series Maintenance & Care).

How to interpret guidance for larger evaporative systems
ASHRAE recommends thoroughly cleaning and flushing the entire cooling-water loop at least monthly. That is system-level guidance for evaporative cooling equipment, not a universal monthly schedule for a portable household cooler. Use the portable cooler’s own manual for its tank, pads, and maintenance frequency (ASHRAE, Chapter 41: Evaporative Air-Cooling Equipment, 2020 Handbook).
