How do I clean a stand mixer safely?
Disconnecting power is the first step, not an optional precaution. Switch the mixer off, unplug it from the outlet, and only then wipe around the beater shaft, remove a bowl, or detach an accessory. This prevents an accidental start while your fingers are near moving parts and keeps moisture away from energized components.

- Stop and unplug the mixer. Do not rely only on the speed control being set to zero.

Never immerse the mixer body, pour water over the motor head, or submerge the power cord. Keep a damp cloth damp rather than wet enough to drip into seams. If batter has hardened around the shaft, place the cloth over the residue briefly to soften it, then wipe gently; do not pry with a metal tool.

Exterior surfaces
A soft, damp cloth is the basic treatment for flour dust, splashes and fingerprints. Work around the speed control and attachment shaft without forcing liquid into the openings. A second dry cloth removes streaks and helps prevent moisture from sitting at joints.

Dried batter and dough
Do not scrape the finish with a knife, scouring pad or abrasive powder. Repeated scratching can make later cleaning harder and may damage painted, coated or polished surfaces. Soften residue with a damp cloth, then lift it with a non-abrasive edge such as the cloth itself or a soft plastic scraper if the manual permits one.
Oil appearing near the shaft
KitchenAid notes that “A few drops of food-grade oil near the beater shaft, in the bottom of the bowl or around the motor head can appear during the lifespan of a KitchenAid® stand mixer, especially after long storage or extended periods without use.” Wipe visible oil from food-contact areas and consult the mixer’s service guidance if it is frequent, excessive or accompanied by noise, heat or slipping. Do not add oil to the mixer merely because a pasta-attachment manual specifies lubrication; those are separate instructions.
Can stand mixer attachments go in the dishwasher?
There is no safe universal dishwasher rule. Identify the exact attachment, its individual components and their materials before using water or a dishwasher. A single accessory can contain hand-wash-only metal parts alongside dishwasher-safe plastic pieces. The owner’s manual is the authority for your model.

How do you clean a pasta roller attachment?
Pasta rollers and cutters are designed to be cleaned dry. Dough pressed into the rollers can be removed without flushing the mechanism with water.
- Turn off and unplug the mixer. Detach the roller or cutter before cleaning.
- Let the dough air-dry. For the cited KitchenAid pasta roller/cutter, wait about one hour after use. Dry dough releases more cleanly than sticky dough.
- Brush away the residue. Use the cleaning brush supplied with the attachment. Brush along the roller openings and cutter channels.
- Tap gently if needed. The cited instructions permit tapping the attachment by hand to dislodge dried pieces.
- Clear stubborn bits carefully. A toothpick may be used where the manufacturer allows it. Never use a knife or another sharp object.
- Do not pull a towel through the rollers. Fabric can catch in the mechanism and leave fibers behind.
- Polish and store. Wipe with a soft, dry cloth and store the attachment dry at room temperature.
Do not immerse the cited pasta roller/cutter and do not place it in a dishwasher. Do not spray cleaner into the roller openings. If a brush is missing, a compatible replacement cleaning brush is a practical substitute, but confirm that it fits the attachment; many mixers include one already.
How often should I oil a pasta roller?
For the specified KitchenAid pasta roller/cutter gears, KitchenAid recommends applying light mineral oil annually or after 50 uses. That interval applies to the named roller/cutter guidance, not to every stand mixer or every pasta accessory.

- Verify that your exact roller/cutter manual calls for oil and identifies the gear points.
- Use only light mineral oil suitable for the stated food-contact mechanism; do not substitute cooking oil, penetrating spray or household machine oil.
- Apply the small amount specified by the manual to the gears, not to the rollers or cutter surfaces that contact pasta.
- Wipe away excess oil before storage and keep the attachment dry.
If your manual does not specify lubrication, do not invent an interval. Unapproved oil can attract flour, migrate into dough or interfere with the mechanism. Lubrication also does not replace dry brushing after each pasta-making session.

How do I clean a pasta press?
Pasta presses illustrate why an attachment must be separated into components rather than treated as one dishwasher item. In the cited KitchenAid instructions, care is divided as follows:

How do I clean a food grinder attachment?
Food grinders vary by construction, so the metal and plastic versions in KitchenAid’s instructions have different restrictions.

Plastic food grinder
The cited plastic-grinder instructions identify certain pieces as top-rack dishwasher safe. They require handwashing and thorough drying for the main housing, grind screw, plates and blade. Treat the parts list as model-specific: do not assume every plastic-looking component belongs in the dishwasher.

Metal food grinder
The cited metal-grinder instructions require hand-washing for all metal parts. Dishwasher detergent and harsh cleaners can cause aluminum oxidation, including gray or black residue. Wash the housing, grind screw, plates and blade by hand as directed, rinse away detergent, and dry immediately and thoroughly.
Before storing a grinder
- Remove meat, vegetables and fat from the feed tube, screw and blade.
- Dry seams, threads and plate holes rather than leaving the grinder assembled and damp.
- Inspect the blade and plates for residue or corrosion before the next use.
- Reassemble only when every part is clean and dry, following the manual’s order.
What is the best cleaning routine after each use?
Immediately after mixing
- Switch off, unplug and remove the attachment.
- Scrape food into the bowl or waste container with a suitable non-sharp utensil.
- Brush or wipe the attachment using its approved method.
- Wipe splashes from the body before they dry.
After the parts are clean
- Dry dishwasher-safe or hand-washed components completely.
- Leave dry-cleaned pasta tools at room temperature until no residue remains.

- Do not run a towel through rollers. It can catch and shed fibers.
- Do not use harsh detergent on aluminum grinder parts. Oxidation may leave gray or black residue.
- Do not lubricate by guesswork. Oil only the specified parts at the specified interval.
What if the attachment is still dirty or not working properly?
Dough remains inside a pasta roller
Stop, unplug and let the dough dry longer before brushing again. Use the supplied brush and, where the manual permits, a toothpick for a small recess. If dough remains packed inside the mechanism, do not force a knife or water into it; consult the manufacturer’s service instructions.
A grinder has gray or black residue
Discontinue food use until the residue is identified. Aluminum parts exposed to dishwasher detergent or harsh cleaners can oxidize. Hand-wash the affected pieces according to the metal-grinder instructions, dry them fully and replace any part that remains damaged or sheds residue.
The mixer shows oil or makes an unusual sound
Wipe away oil from the bowl and attachment area, unplug the appliance and check the manual. A few drops can occur over a mixer’s lifespan, particularly after long storage, but persistent leakage, grinding, overheating or attachment slippage warrants manufacturer support rather than additional household oil.

An attachment will not lock or release
Unplug the mixer, remove food debris from the hub and inspect the locking surfaces for damage. Never operate with a loose accessory. If cleaning does not restore a secure fit, use the model’s service channel and provide the exact mixer and attachment numbers.
Which cleaning instructions should I trust?
Use the manual for the exact mixer and attachment, including the edition supplied for your region. KitchenAid’s pasta roller, pasta press and grinder instructions are useful examples of how care can differ, but they are not universal directions for every stand mixer brand. Materials, coatings, gear design and dishwasher ratings change between models.
When instructions conflict, follow the more restrictive rule until the manufacturer confirms otherwise: keep a mechanism dry, hand-wash metal parts, use the top rack only where explicitly allowed, and do not lubricate without a stated requirement. Record the date or use count when an attachment has a defined maintenance interval so “annually or after 50 uses” is not overlooked.
