The reliable way to make a multi-tool open smoothly is a simple sequence: remove loose grit, dissolve residue with a material-compatible cleaner, rinse or wipe away the cleaner, dry the tool completely, then apply a small amount of PTFE-based lubricant to the pivots and work each implement through its travel. Repeat that process whenever contamination or moisture affects movement rather than relying on a fixed calendar interval.
The detailed procedure below follows Leatherman’s maintenance guidance. Other manufacturers may specify different cleaners, lubricants, finishes, or disassembly limits, so the instructions for your exact model take precedence.

What regular maintenance fixes
Multi-tools collect pocket lint, soil, metal particles, food residue, tree sap, adhesive, and moisture in the gaps around blades, scissors, pliers, drivers, and other implements. That contamination can make a pivot feel gritty, increase resistance, or prevent an implement from seating correctly. A tool can also look clean while retaining residue inside a joint.
Recommended Free Tools
Cleaning removes the material that interferes with movement. Drying prevents trapped water from remaining in the joints. Lubrication then reduces friction at the pivot and wear surfaces. These are separate jobs: oil is not a substitute for removing abrasive grit, and a wet tool should not be sealed under lubricant before it has been dried.

Leatherman describes stainless steel as corrosion-resistant rather than rust-proof. Salt, standing water, and damp storage can therefore produce corrosion even on a tool marketed as stainless. Prompt rinsing, drying, and light oiling are particularly important after marine or saltwater exposure.
Prepare the tool before you clean it
Gather simple, compatible supplies
- A soft-bristle brush for loose dirt and surface staining.
- A mild detergent and water solution for sticky substances or debris between blades, as permitted in Leatherman’s guidance.
- Clean water for rinsing when the cleaning method calls for it.
- A dry, absorbent cloth, such as a microfiber cloth, for wiping.
- A PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant for pivoting or wear areas.
- For tar-like contamination, turpentine or another mineral spirit identified as suitable by the manufacturer.
Use only products that are compatible with the tool’s materials. A multi-tool may combine stainless steel with plastic scales, liners, washers, seals, or other non-metal parts. A solvent that removes residue from steel can damage another component.
Set up a controlled work area
Work over a clean surface where a small spring, washer, or implement cannot disappear. Open the implements carefully and keep fingers clear of blade edges. If a part is stuck, do not force it open with another tool; first remove visible contamination and follow the manufacturer’s service instructions if the movement remains restricted.

Before applying any chemical, read its label and the tool maker’s compatibility guidance. Do not assume that a cleaner recommended for one model is approved for every multi-tool. If you cannot identify the finish or non-metal components, start with the least aggressive method: brushing followed by mild detergent and water.
Step-by-step cleaning and lubrication
1. Inspect the joints and remove loose debris
Open each implement as far as it moves safely. Look at the pivot heads, liners, backsprings, locking surfaces, and the spaces between folded blades. Shake or brush away loose grit before adding liquid; otherwise, the liquid can turn dry particles into an abrasive paste that spreads through the joint.
Use a soft-bristle brush on the outside and around the pivot. Leatherman also names a non-metallic abrasive for surface stains. Keep any abrasive on accessible exterior staining rather than packing abrasive material into a pivot. Do not use a metal pick or wire brush on a finished surface unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.

| What you find | Appropriate first method | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Loose dirt, lint, or dry grit | Soft-bristle brushing while the implements are open | Remove particles before adding oil so they are not carried deeper into the pivot. |
| Sticky food, adhesive, or general debris between blades | Mild detergent-and-water solution, followed by removal of the cleaning solution | Dry the tool thoroughly before lubrication. |
| Tar or a similar heavy hydrocarbon residue | Turpentine or another mineral spirit named as compatible by the manufacturer | Check every non-metal component first; solvent compatibility is model-dependent. |
| Moisture in a joint | Low-viscosity oil can help force moisture out, according to Leatherman | Oil does not replace cleaning or drying when grit and sticky residue are present. |
| Saltwater or marine residue | Fresh-water rinse, complete drying, then light oil | Saltwater exposure should be addressed promptly because stainless steel is not rust-proof. |
3. Clean sticky residue with mild detergent and water
For debris or sticky substances accumulated between blades, prepare a mild detergent-and-water solution. Apply enough to loosen the contamination without flooding areas that you cannot dry. Work the implements through their safe range so the solution reaches the accessible edges of the joint, then brush away softened residue.
Remove the detergent solution with clean water or a clean damp cloth, depending on the model’s construction and the manufacturer’s instructions. Residual detergent can attract dirt or interfere with the lubricant, so do not move directly from washing to oiling.
4. Treat tar and other stubborn substances cautiously
Leatherman identifies turpentine or other mineral spirits for tar and similar substances. Use that option only when it is appropriate for the exact tool and its non-metal parts. Apply the smallest amount needed to the contaminated area, keep it away from components the manufacturer warns may be solvent-sensitive, and remove the solvent residue afterward.
Do not treat acetone or brake cleaner as universal multi-tool cleaners. Leatherman warns that these products may damage plastic components. A tool with plastic scales or internal polymer parts can therefore be harmed even when the solvent removes the visible stain successfully.

Leatherman’s sequence is to clean and dry the product before relubricating. Wipe the exterior and the accessible spaces around each pivot with a dry cloth. Open and close the implements carefully to expose additional damp surfaces, then wipe again.
The cited guidance does not specify a universal drying time, and different constructions retain different amounts of moisture. Continue until no visible moisture remains and the joints are dry to the touch. Do not seal a damp tool in a pouch or drawer. If the manufacturer gives a model-specific drying procedure, use that procedure instead.

6. Lubricate the pivots and wear areas
Use a small amount of PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant on the pivoting or wear areas. Leatherman’s maintenance guidance states: “For pivoting or wear areas, use a PTFE / Teflon-based lubricant to make your tool function as smoothly as possible.” The recommendation concerns the lubricant type, not a particular brand or a guaranteed result for every model.
Place the lubricant where the implement rotates rather than coating every exposed surface. Move the blade, scissors, pliers, or other implement through its normal travel several times to distribute the film. Keep fingers away from cutting edges and avoid forcing an implement past its designed stop.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →After the movement feels even, wipe excess lubricant from exposed metal, handles, and locking surfaces. A heavy external coating collects dust and pocket lint. The goal is a thin film at the moving interface, not an oily tool that transfers residue to hands or materials.
7. Check operation before storage
Test every implement individually. Confirm that it opens without gritty resistance, reaches its normal stop, and folds without scraping another part. Check that locking features engage as designed on models that have them. If one implement still binds while the others move normally, concentrate inspection on that pivot rather than adding more oil to the whole tool.
Wipe the tool once more, leave it dry on a clean surface, and store it where it will not be exposed to persistent humidity. Keep blades closed or secured according to the manufacturer’s safety instructions.
Saltwater and marine exposure need a faster response
After contact with seawater, salt spray, or another marine environment, Leatherman specifically advises rinsing with fresh water, drying, and lubricating with light oil. Fresh water removes soluble salt that would otherwise remain in seams and joints. Drying prevents that rinse water from becoming trapped, and light oil adds a protective film after the moisture has been removed.

Do not wait for orange spots before responding. Corrosion can begin in hidden crevices, and stainless steel’s corrosion resistance does not make it immune to rust. Inspect the pivots, blade tangs, liners, and other exposed areas after the tool is dry. If corrosion is extensive or movement remains impaired, use the manufacturer’s service process rather than aggressive polishing or forced disassembly.
What to do about visible rust
First determine whether the mark is loose surface contamination or evidence of deeper corrosion. Brush away loose material with a soft brush and inspect the joint. A non-metallic abrasive is identified by Leatherman for surface stains, but abrasive work should remain limited to accessible staining and should not be packed into a pivot.
Clean the affected area using the least aggressive compatible method, dry it completely, and lubricate the pivot as described above. If the metal is pitted, a lock no longer engages correctly, an implement is bent, or the joint remains rough after cleaning and lubrication, stop trying to improve it by force. Contact the tool manufacturer or its authorized service process for an assessment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Diagnose a tool that still feels rough
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Movement feels gritty from the first degree of opening | Loose grit or dried residue at the pivot | Brush, clean with a compatible mild solution, dry, then apply a small amount of PTFE-based lubricant. |
| Movement is sticky after washing | Detergent, solvent, or softened residue left in the joint | Remove remaining cleaner, dry again, and relubricate sparingly. |
| One implement binds while the rest work | Contamination or damage localized to that implement’s pivot | Inspect that joint; do not force it or flood the entire tool with oil. |
| Rust or orange discoloration returns | Residual moisture, salt, or active corrosion | Rinse after salt exposure, dry completely, inspect the metal, and seek manufacturer service if corrosion persists. |
| Plastic component looks softened, cracked, or discolored | Possible solvent incompatibility | Stop using the chemical, wipe according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and contact the manufacturer if the part is damaged. |
| Pivot remains seized after cleaning | Mechanical damage, bent parts, or corrosion beyond surface residue | Do not force the implement; use the manufacturer’s repair or replacement process. |
How often should you clean and lubricate?
Leatherman calls for periodic cleaning, drying, and relubrication but does not publish a numeric calendar interval in the cited guidance. A condition-based routine is therefore more accurate than promising a monthly, quarterly, or annual schedule.
- Clean when an implement feels gritty, sticky, or harder to open than usual.
- Clean and lubricate promptly after saltwater or marine exposure.
- Inspect after work involving tar, adhesive, food residue, soil, or fine abrasive dust.
- Repeat the dry-and-lubricate steps whenever washing or solvent cleaning removes the existing lubricant.
- Check the tool before long storage and again before returning it to regular use.
Frequency depends on exposure, not on a universal number. A tool used around saltwater may need attention immediately after a single outing, while a lightly used tool kept dry may need maintenance only when inspection reveals contamination or rough movement.
Choosing cleaners and lubricants without damaging the tool
Prioritize material compatibility
Read the model’s maintenance instructions before choosing a solvent. The presence of plastic components is enough reason to avoid acetone and brake cleaner when the manufacturer warns they may cause damage. Do not infer compatibility from the fact that a chemical is sold as a degreaser or is safe on bare steel.

Use the manufacturer’s pivot recommendation
For the pivot and wear areas, the clearest supported recommendation is a PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant. The available guidance does not establish that one brand, viscosity, or formula is best for every multi-tool, nor does it establish food-contact safety. If your tool has a special coating, bearing system, or use-specific requirement, follow its own documentation.
Avoid over-lubricating
More lubricant does not compensate for embedded grit. Excess oil on exposed surfaces attracts new debris and can migrate onto handles or materials you touch. Apply a small amount at the moving interface, work the implement, and wipe away what remains outside the joint.
Optional maintenance kits and supplies
A dedicated maintenance kit can be convenient when it contains the basics: cleaning supplies, a cloth, a work mat, a blade sharpener, and lubrication oil. Leatherman lists a Tool Maintenance Kit with those types of contents, but contents, price, and availability can change. You do not need a branded bundle to follow the maintenance sequence; a soft brush, compatible cleaner, dry cloth, and suitable pivot lubricant are the functional requirements.
Keep chemicals clearly labeled and separated from food, skin-care products, and materials that could be contaminated. Replace a cloth that is loaded with grit instead of rubbing that grit back into the pivots.
When cleaning is no longer the right repair
Stop home maintenance when an implement is bent, a pivot is visibly damaged, a lock fails to engage, corrosion has caused pitting, or the tool remains bound after a careful clean, complete dry, and appropriate lubrication. Forcing a seized implement can injure you and can turn a serviceable repair into a damaged frame or blade.
Contact the tool’s manufacturer or its authorized service process for persistent mechanical problems. Leatherman describes a repair or replacement process, but its stated limited warranty excludes corrosion, rust, oxidation, and other corrosion-related damage. Warranty coverage and the submission process depend on the applicable region and terms, so read the warranty that applies to your tool rather than assuming corrosion will be covered.
Quick Recap
A compact maintenance checklist
- Open the implements carefully and inspect each pivot.
