Clean a Leatherman by removing debris with a soft brush, using a cleaner suited to the residue, rinsing when the tool has seen saltwater, drying every joint completely, then applying the right lubricant sparingly. Use a PTFE/Teflon lubricant on pivots and wear points, light oil to displace moisture after marine exposure, and never assume “stainless” means rust-proof. Sharpen plain and serrated edges at different angles, and check your model’s manual before disassembly or unusual solvent use.

What proper Leatherman maintenance involves

A multi-tool combines folding steel parts, tight pivots, springs, liners, and—depending on the model—plastic scales or spacers. Dirt can hold moisture against those parts, while dried food, sap, tape adhesive, salt, and fine grit can make a pivot feel stiff or gritty. Maintenance is therefore more than wiping the outside: you need to clean the joints, remove the residue that caused the problem, dry hidden moisture, lubricate the moving surfaces, and verify that every implement opens, closes, and locks normally.

Leatherman’s own maintenance guidance makes an important distinction: “Stainless steel is not rust proof; it is corrosion-resistant.” The company also says a product should be “cleaned, dried and re-lubricated periodically to inhibit rust and corrosion.” Those are maintenance principles rather than a fixed calendar. The published guidance does not specify one universal interval, oil quantity, or disassembly procedure, because models and exposures differ. Use the product-specific manual for model-dependent details (Leatherman Maintenance Tips).

Before you start: identify the model and the risk

Close and secure the tool before cleaning the outside. When you need access to a pivot, open only the implement you can control and keep fingers clear of the edge. Work on a stable, well-lit surface; a cleaning mat or folded towel prevents small parts from rolling away and keeps grit from being pushed back into the tool.

Do not begin by taking the multi-tool apart. Some models use proprietary fasteners, washers, springs, or replaceable components, and a complete disassembly can change alignment or void service assumptions. Consult the manual for your exact model before removing pivot hardware, using a solvent, or attempting a repair. If a pivot is seized, a tool is bent, or a lock does not hold, stop cleaning and seek model-specific service rather than forcing it.

Gather supplies by job

  • Soft-bristle brush for dry dirt in pivots, nail nicks, and gaps.
  • Cotton swabs or cleaning picks for narrow recesses; use them gently so fibers or debris do not pack into the joint.
  • Mild detergent and water for sticky, water-soluble debris.
  • Low-viscosity oil such as WD-40, Liquid Wrench, or CRC 3-36 when the goal is to displace moisture from joints.
  • PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant for pivoting or wear areas.
  • Fresh water for rinsing, especially after saltwater contact.
  • Lint-free or microfiber cloths for drying and wiping excess lubricant.
  • A polishing cloth, soft brush, or non-metallic abrasive pad such as Scotchbrite for surface staining.
  • A blade sharpener appropriate to the edge type; serrations need a serration-compatible system.

Keep ventilation and the solvent manufacturer’s safety instructions in mind. Leatherman’s guidance suggests turpentine or other mineral spirits for tar-like contamination, but it warns that acetone and brake cleaners may damage plastic components. Because material combinations vary by model, do not treat any solvent as universally safe.

How do I clean a Leatherman? Follow this sequence

1. Open accessible implements and remove loose debris

Open the tools you need to reach, keeping blades pointed away from you. Brush dirt, sand, lint, and dried particles out of the pivots and gaps before adding liquid. A soft brush is the least aggressive option; a pick or swab can reach a narrow channel, but do not pry against a spring, liner, or cutting edge. Removing dry grit first prevents it from becoming an abrasive paste when oil or water is introduced.

2. Match the cleaner to the residue

There is no single best cleaner for every mess. Use the mildest method that can dissolve or lift the material, and protect plastic components from aggressive solvents.

Residue or exposure Appropriate approach Important limitation
Loose dirt, dust, lint, sand Soft-bristle brush; pick or swab for recesses Do not force grit deeper into a pivot.
Food, tape adhesive, or other sticky water-soluble debris Mild detergent solution and water, applied with a cloth or swab Rinse or wipe away detergent, then dry completely.
Moisture in a joint Low-viscosity oil can help force moisture out of the joint This is moisture displacement, not a substitute for final pivot lubrication.
Tar-like material Turpentine or another mineral spirit, used cautiously Check the model manual and solvent compatibility first; provide ventilation.
Plastic-equipped tool Mild detergent and water are the conservative first choice Acetone and brake cleaner may damage plastic components.

Apply cleaner to a cloth, swab, or brush instead of flooding the whole tool. Work the residue loose, then remove the dissolved material so it cannot migrate into the pivot. If the contamination is unknown, start with a dry brush, then mild detergent and water; escalate only when the material and model make the next step appropriate.

3. Rinse when water or salt is involved

After detergent cleaning, remove the detergent residue. Marine or saltwater exposure deserves special treatment: Leatherman’s guidance is, “If so, rinse in fresh water, dry, and lubricate it with a light oil.” Fresh water removes salt that would otherwise remain hygroscopic in the joint and continue attracting moisture. Rinse enough to remove visible salt and cleaner, but do not leave the tool soaking unnecessarily.

4. Dry every joint, not just the handles

Dry the exterior with a clean cloth, then open and close each implement so trapped water can leave the pivot. Reach into gaps with a dry swab or corner of a lint-free cloth. The manufacturer does not prescribe one drying method or time, so judge by the actual tool: no visible water should remain around pivots, liners, or blade tangs before lubrication. Do not seal a damp multi-tool in a pouch or pocket.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Lubricate the right surfaces

Apply a small amount of lubricant to the pivoting and wear areas, then move the implement repeatedly so the lubricant reaches the contact surfaces. Leatherman recommends a PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant for pivoting or wear areas. This recommendation is distinct from using a low-viscosity oil to displace moisture. A moisture-displacing oil can help after rinsing, while a PTFE-based product is intended for ongoing movement and wear lubrication.

After working the joint, wipe away the excess. A thin film is preferable to a wet exterior that attracts pocket lint, dust, and sand. Check that the implement moves freely without side-to-side looseness, scraping, or a new gritty sensation. Lubrication should not compensate for a bent component, damaged lock, or embedded abrasive; those conditions need model-specific service.

6. Inspect operation before carrying the tool

Test each implement one at a time. Confirm that blades open and close smoothly, locks engage fully where fitted, plier jaws meet correctly, scissors cut without binding, and drivers or files are not obstructed. Look for reddish-brown spots, flaking finish, cracked scales, loose fasteners, and corrosion in hidden joints. If a lock fails to engage or an implement can close unexpectedly, do not use the tool until it has been repaired.

How do I clean a multi-tool after saltwater?

Use a dedicated fresh-water rinse as soon as practical, followed by complete drying and light-oil treatment. Salt crystals can remain in the smallest gaps even when the outside looks clean, so pay particular attention to pivots, liners, and the junctions between handles and implements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open accessible implements safely and brush away sand or dried salt.
  2. Rinse the tool with fresh water to remove salt from the exterior and joints.
  3. Move each implement through its range while rinsing so trapped saltwater can escape.
  4. Dry all surfaces and recesses with a clean cloth and swabs; continue until no moisture is visible.
  5. Use a light oil to displace residual moisture, then wipe off the excess.
  6. Apply PTFE/Teflon lubricant to pivoting or wear areas, work the joints, and wipe the tool clean.
  7. Inspect for corrosion or abnormal movement before returning it to service.

Leatherman says products exposed to saltwater should be cleaned, dried, and re-lubricated periodically to inhibit corrosion, but it does not publish a universal schedule. Increase your inspections when the tool is repeatedly used around seawater, wet gear, or humid storage rather than relying on a calendar interval.

How do I remove rust from a Leatherman?

First distinguish a removable surface stain from active corrosion. Orange or brown discoloration on an otherwise smooth surface may respond to a polishing cloth, soft-bristle brush, or non-metallic abrasive such as a Scotchbrite pad. Work lightly and inspect often. Do not use a steel brush or aggressive grinding method that can scratch the steel, round an edge, or remove a finish.

Clean and dry the area before polishing so grit is not dragged across the surface. Wipe away the residue, then apply the appropriate lubricant to nearby pivots and wear areas. If corrosion is deep, pitted, flaking, concentrated around a lock, or affecting the cutting edge, stop removing material and obtain model-specific service. Polishing cannot restore lost metal or a compromised locking surface.

Black-oxide tools need different expectations

Black oxide is a conversion coating, not a permanent layer of paint. It wears with use, especially on contact points and edges. Leatherman’s FAQ suggests using CRC 3-36 or a similar oil to rub the surface and set the finish (Leatherman FAQs). This can refresh the appearance and add protection, but it will not recreate coating that has been mechanically worn away.

What oil should I use on a Leatherman?

Choose by task rather than treating every oil as interchangeable.

Product type Best use How to apply What it does not replace
Low-viscosity moisture-displacing oil Forcing water out of joints after washing or wet exposure Apply to the joint, move the implement, then wipe away excess It is not automatically the best long-term wear lubricant.
PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant Pivoting and wear areas Use a thin application, work the pivot, and remove surplus It does not dissolve heavy dirt or replace rinsing after saltwater.
Light oil after marine exposure Post-rinse corrosion inhibition Apply only after the tool is clean and dry enough to avoid trapping water It does not repair existing pitting or damaged locks.

Leatherman’s maintenance material names WD-40, Liquid Wrench, and CRC 3-36 as examples of low-viscosity oils that can help force moisture out of joints. Use those examples for that specific purpose, and follow the product label. For routine pivot lubrication, use a PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant as recommended by Leatherman. Regardless of the product, excess oil should be wiped from handles, blades, and textured surfaces.

Sharpening: plain edge and serrations are not the same

Clean the blade before sharpening so residue does not clog the abrasive. Secure the multi-tool and protect your hands; a blade can move unexpectedly if the pivot is dirty or the tool is held loosely.

Plain-edge sections

Leatherman’s published standard angle for a plain-edge blade section is 32 degrees total, or 16 degrees per side. Use standard sharpening equipment that can hold or guide that geometry. Keep the angle consistent from heel to tip, use light passes, and remove the burr rather than repeatedly removing large amounts of steel. The 32-degree figure comes from Leatherman’s staff maintenance article published January 20, 2022 (How to Maintain and Extend the Life of your Leatherman).

Serrated sections

Leatherman specifies a 20-degree one-sided angle for serrated sections. Sharpen only the edged side with a system sized for the individual serrations. Do not flatten and sharpen the non-edged side: doing so wears away the serration profile that makes the blade cut. Match the sharpener to the smallest scallop, work each serration separately, and remove only the burr that develops on the flat side.

If a blade is chipped, badly pitted, or has an altered profile, routine touch-up may not be enough. A professional or manufacturer service is safer than trying to recreate the geometry freehand.

Cleaning supplies and the optional maintenance kit

You can maintain a multi-tool with separate household-safe supplies, but a bundled kit may be convenient if you need both cleaning and sharpening equipment. Leatherman’s US Tool Maintenance Kit page lists a ceramic blade sharpener, cleaning supplies, cleaning mat, microfiber cloth, lubrication oil, pick, swabs, and brush; the multi-tool itself is not included (Leatherman Tool Maintenance Kit).

Approach What you get Trade-off
Individual supplies Choose a soft brush, cloths, mild detergent, PTFE lubricant, and edge-specific sharpener separately Usually more flexible, but you must verify compatibility and assemble the set.
Bundled maintenance kit Cleaning accessories, mat, cloth, oil, pick, swabs, brush, and ceramic sharpener in one package Convenient, but you may already own some items and should verify current contents.

The US product page showed a listed price of $69.95 and an unavailable/backordered status on October 13, 2026. Price and stock can change, so verify both before purchasing. The kit is optional; it does not replace the model manual or change the need to choose solvent and lubricant by material and task.

Common problems and the safest response

Symptom Likely issue Action
Pivot feels gritty after cleaning Sand or dried residue remains inside Brush and rinse again as appropriate, dry fully, then lubricate; do not simply add more oil.
Pivot is stiff but clean Insufficient lubrication, dried residue, or misalignment Use PTFE lubricant sparingly and work the joint. If stiffness persists, consult the model manual or service.
Tool attracts pocket lint Too much oil left on the exterior Wipe handles, pivots, and implements until only a thin protective film remains.
Orange spots return quickly Moisture or salt remains, or corrosion is active Rinse if needed, dry hidden areas, inspect for pitting, and improve storage; deep corrosion needs service.
Black finish looks uneven Normal conversion-coating wear Use the FAQ’s oil-rub approach for appearance and protection; do not expect worn coating to regenerate.
Lock does not engage or blade closes unexpectedly Contamination, damage, or misalignment Stop using the tool and obtain model-specific repair guidance.
Plastic becomes cloudy, soft, or cracked Incompatible solvent exposure Stop using the solvent; acetone and brake cleaner may damage plastic components.

Warranty and service boundaries

Leatherman’s current US warranty page describes a 25-year limited warranty for qualifying tools, but it excludes rust, oxidation, and corrosion. Routine maintenance and sharpening are not warranty service. In other words, cleaning and lubrication are owner-care tasks, and corrosion caused by exposure should not be assumed to qualify for a warranty repair (Leatherman US Warranty).

Warranty scope and service routing vary by geography, so readers outside the United States should use their local Leatherman distributor or regional policy. Owners of MagnaCut-bladed tools may see a separate free-sharpening service in published terms; confirm current eligibility, participating region, and submission requirements before sending a tool.

Storage and an ongoing care routine

Store the tool clean and completely dry, with no excess oil that can collect abrasive dust. After work involving salt, mud, food, adhesives, or chemicals, clean it rather than waiting for the residue to harden. During ordinary use, inspect the pivots, locks, and edges whenever the action changes or the tool has been exposed to moisture. A periodic clean-dry-lubricate cycle is consistent with Leatherman’s guidance, but the company does not set one interval that fits every model or environment.

Keep the manual for your exact model with your maintenance supplies. It is the reference for disassembly, component materials, lock construction, and any model-specific cautions that a general cleaning method cannot establish.
