How to Clean and Maintain a Front-Load Washing Machine

A front-load washer stays fresh when you control moisture, remove residue, and clean the parts that trap lint and hair. After each wash, remove the laundry promptly, wipe the door gasket, and leave the door and detergent drawer open enough to dry. On the schedule stated in your owner’s manual, run the empty tub-clean cycle, wash the detergent drawer, and clean the pump filter if your model has an accessible one.

There is no universal formula for every front-load machine. Cycle names, filter access, approved cleaners, and intervals vary by model and region. Use the routine below as a framework, then treat your washer’s manual as the authority—especially before adding bleach, vinegar, oxygen cleaner, or a commercial washer-cleaning product.

Why front-load washers develop musty odors

The door seal, dispenser drawer, drain path, and outer tub can retain a thin film of water mixed with detergent, fabric softener, body oils, lint, and hair. A closed door or drawer slows evaporation. Leaving wet clothes in the drum adds another source of mildew and odor.

Residue can also affect performance. Excess or unsuitable detergent creates suds that may interfere with rinsing and drainage. Hair or lint caught in the gasket can prevent a clean seal and, according to LG guidance, can contribute to leaks. A dirty pump filter can restrict drainage or leave water standing in the machine.

Affresh Washing Machine Cleaner, #1 Washing Machine Cleaner Tablet, 6 Count
  • NO. 1 WASHING MACHINE CLEANER TABLET*
  • TIME-RELEASE DEEP CLEAN. Affresh tablets are scientifically designed to deliver extended cleaning action throughout the wash cycle, helping power away bacteria, grime and soap scum deep inside the washing machine’s pump, drum and filter to help optimize performance.
  • STINKY PET ODOR? Affresh washing machine cleaner helps remove residues that can trap odors from pets, sweat and mildew that can transfer onto clothes and sheets.
  • ONE TABLET, ONCE A MONTH. Avoid the twice-monthly cleaning cycles of other appliance cleaners and cut your machine cleaning maintenance time in half.
  • TRUSTED BY APPLIANCE EXPERTS. Backed by over 100 years of appliance innovation, affresh is the washing machine cleaner brand recommended by Whirlpool, Maytag, and Amana.**

Before you begin: confirm the model procedure

Find the model number and read the cleaning and maintenance section of the owner’s manual before removing a drawer, filter, hose, or inlet screen. The manual identifies whether your machine has a user-accessible pump filter, where the emergency drain hose is located, which cycle name to select, and whether a cleaner is permitted. Regional versions of the same washer can have different instructions.

Gather a microfiber or other lint-free cloth, a soft-bristled brush, warm water, towels, and a shallow container for residual water. A washer-specific cleaner is optional, not automatically necessary. Do not begin by mixing household chemicals or taking off sealed panels.

The maintenance schedule at a glance

Task Starting interval What to adjust
Remove laundry, wipe gasket and glass, ventilate After every load or wash day Do it more carefully if the seal remains wet or visibly dirty
Clean detergent drawer Weekly to monthly, depending on the manual and residue Shorten the interval for heavy use, softener buildup, or visible mold
Run the dedicated tub-clean cycle About monthly on many models Some guidance calls for one to two times monthly; Panasonic examples use about every two months depending on use
Clean door gasket About monthly or when buildup appears Follow the model’s approved solution; chemical directions differ
Clean pump or drain filter About monthly or roughly every 40 washes on some Samsung models Confirm that your washer has an accessible filter and follow its draining procedure
Inspect water-inlet screens Periodically Check sooner in hard-water areas or when filling slows

These are manufacturer examples, not universal laws. Usage, climate, water hardness, detergent type, and the machine’s design all change the right interval. A household that runs several loads daily may need more frequent drawer and gasket care than one that washes once a week.

After every load: the five-minute routine

  1. Empty the drum promptly. Wet laundry left in the basket can develop mildew and odor.
  2. Inspect the gasket. Pull the folds back gently and remove hair, lint, coins, and other debris. Wipe standing water from the lower fold and the glass-contact area.
  3. Dry the surfaces. Use a clean microfiber cloth or another soft, lint-free cloth. Do not scrape the rubber with a sharp object.
  4. Ventilate. Leave the door ajar and open the detergent drawer enough for air to circulate. If children or pets are present, make the opening inaccessible; never allow a child to climb into the tub.
  5. Check for an abnormal smell or leak. A small amount of water in the gasket fold is normal, but repeated pooling, a damaged seal, or water on the floor needs attention.

Wipe the inside of the glass as well as the rubber. The glass-contact area can carry detergent film back onto clean clothing. If you notice a loose coin, hairpin, or other hard object, remove it before the next cycle rather than pushing it deeper into the seal.

Clean the detergent drawer and housing

Detergent and softener can harden in the drawer, block the siphon, and feed odor back into the washer. Manufacturer guidance ranges from weekly cleaning to monthly cleaning, so use the shorter interval when residue returns quickly.

  1. Read the manual for the drawer-release button or stop position. Do not force the drawer; release designs differ.
  2. Remove the drawer and any removable inserts.
  3. Rinse the parts under warm water. Use a soft-bristled brush for hardened residue and the narrow channels where liquid leaves the dispenser.
  4. Wipe the empty housing and its roof, where powder can collect. Keep water away from electrical controls.
  5. Rinse away loosened residue, dry the pieces, and reinstall them fully.

LG’s 2026 guidance says not to wash dispenser components in a dishwasher because heat can warp or melt them. Never assume an insert is dishwasher-safe unless the manual says so. Make sure the softener siphon insert is seated correctly; an improperly fitted insert can leave the compartment full or cause an overflow.

Run the empty tub-clean cycle

Use the washer’s dedicated Tub Clean, Clean Washer, Self Clean, or Pure Cycle when available. Run it with no laundry if the instructions call for an empty drum; LG specifically says not to add clothing during Tub Clean.

Choose the cleaner only after checking the manual

Cleaner compatibility is model-specific. Whirlpool’s Clean Washer instructions allow an approved washer cleaner, liquid chlorine bleach, or affresh for that cycle. Samsung says added cleaner is usually unnecessary for Self Clean or Pure Cycle, although a washer-specific cleaner may help when odor persists. Those directions should not be generalized to another brand or model.

Use the correct amount

Measure exactly as directed on the washer’s instructions or the product label. More chemical does not mean a cleaner drum; excess product can leave residue or damage components. Do not put laundry in the drum unless the manual explicitly permits it.

What to do when no dedicated cycle exists

Do not invent a high-temperature or chemical program. Look for the manufacturer’s procedure for your model. If the manual permits a maintenance wash, follow its water temperature, product, and rinse instructions exactly. If it provides no chemical-cleaning procedure, concentrate on drying the gasket and drawer, correct detergent dosing, and professional advice rather than experimenting.

When the cycle finishes, leave the door open so the drum can dry. If odor remains, inspect the gasket, drawer, and pump filter before repeating a chemical treatment. A recurring smell can come from residue in a part that the tub cycle does not reach.

Clean the door gasket without damaging it

Open the door and pull the rubber folds back gently. Remove trapped objects, then wipe the seal and the matching glass surface. For ordinary buildup, Samsung describes warm water and mild soap. Use only the solution your own manual approves.

Published LG guidance is not identical across years: a 2025 guide describes an oxygen-based bleach treatment about monthly, while 2026 guidance describes a diluted bleach solution or vinegar and warns that straight bleach can deteriorate the gasket. These differences are why a chemical recommendation from another washer cannot be treated as universal.

  • Never mix bleach and vinegar. Use one or the other only when the manual allows it.
  • Do not pour concentrated bleach directly onto the rubber seal.
  • Rinse away any permitted cleaner and dry the folds thoroughly.
  • Replace a gasket that is torn, permanently deformed, or unable to seal.

Work around the full circumference, including the bottom drain holes and the inner lip that touches the door glass. Do not stretch the gasket off its retaining ring. If a fold has detached or the seal is punctured, cleaning will not restore a watertight door.

Clean the pump or drain filter safely

Many front-load washers have an accessible drain-pump filter, but some models do not expose one to the user. Locate the filter in the manual before opening any panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn the washer off and unplug it if the manual directs. Close the water supply when instructed.
  2. Prepare towels and a shallow container. The trapped water may be hot, so allow a recently run hot cycle to cool.
  3. Open the service flap. If an emergency drain hose is provided, remove its cap and drain the water into the container before loosening the filter.
  4. Unscrew the filter slowly. Let residual water drain, then remove lint, coins, hair, and other debris from the filter and the filter opening.
  5. Rinse the filter and use a soft brush for stubborn film. Do not damage the impeller or threads.
  6. Refit the filter firmly, replace the hose cap, and close the access panel. A loose filter or cap can leak.
  7. Run a short rinse or drain while observing the service area for leaks.

LG and Samsung commonly describe monthly filter cleaning; Samsung also gives approximately every 40 washes as a guide. Your model may have a different interval or no user-accessible filter. Never reach into a moving pump or remove a sealed pump housing. If the filter cannot be opened normally, stop and arrange service.

Inspect water-inlet screens and model-specific parts

Inlet screens at the hose connections can collect mineral scale and reduce filling speed, especially in hard-water areas. LG advises shutting off the water and unplugging the washer before its inspection procedure. Do not disconnect hoses or remove screens unless your manual explains how to do it and how to reseal the connections.

Some machines also have a circulation nozzle inside the gasket area. It can collect foreign objects, but not every model includes one. Treat it as a model-specific service point rather than a standard cleaning step. After any permitted hose work, check the connection for drips during a fill cycle.

Detergent and loading practices that prevent buildup

  • Use detergent labeled for high-efficiency front-load machines when your washer requires HE detergent.
  • Measure the dose for the actual load, soil level, and water hardness. Filling the cup to the top for every load can create excess suds.
  • Do not exceed the softener limit or fill past the dispenser’s maximum line.
  • Use the correct compartment. Putting detergent in the softener section can leave residue and impair dispensing.
  • Avoid routinely washing a nearly empty drum with an oversized dose; concentrated residue can remain behind.
  • Balance loads and avoid packing the drum tightly. Overloading can reduce rinsing and leave damp fabric against the seal.

Whirlpool identifies non-HE detergent or too much detergent as contributors to excessive suds, drainage concerns, leaks, and poor rinsing. Samsung also lists detergent and softener overuse among common odor contributors. If you change detergent brands or move to softer water, recheck the dose rather than assuming the old amount still fits.

How to compare cleaning products and methods

Judge a cleaning approach on four points: whether it is compatible with the exact model, whether the washer has a dedicated cycle, what agent that cycle permits, and how often the task is needed under your usage conditions. A cloth, warm water, and a soft brush handle much of the routine without a special purchase. A washer-specific tablet or liquid is an optional consumable when the manual permits it.

Do not choose a product solely because it is marketed for front-load machines. Check the label for washer compatibility and the manual for quantity and placement. Never combine a commercial cleaner with bleach, vinegar, or another chemical unless the instructions explicitly say it is safe. If the washer’s own Self Clean or Pure Cycle says no cleaner is needed, adding one every month can create unnecessary residue.

Manufacturer guidance compared

Manufacturer guidance Tub-clean approach Gasket or drawer notes Filter interval example
LG USA, guidance dated July 9, 2025 Run Tub Clean empty; do not add laundry. The guide describes Tub Clean about one to two times monthly. Suggests frequent drawer care and an oxygen-based bleach approach for periodic gasket cleaning. Follow the model procedure.
LG USA, guidance dated May 29, 2026 Follow the washer’s Tub Clean instructions. Describes diluted bleach or vinegar options, warns against straight bleach on the gasket, and says dispenser parts should not go in a dishwasher. Monthly cleaning is described for applicable filters.
Whirlpool Product Help Clean Washer cycle may permit affresh, liquid chlorine bleach, or another washer cleaner, as specified for the model. Keep the door area dry and remove wet loads promptly to reduce odor. Use the model’s maintenance instructions.
Samsung Canada Self Clean or Pure Cycle usually needs no added cleaner; a washer-specific cleaner may be useful if odor remains. Warm water and mild soap are described for gasket buildup; drawer cleaning is commonly monthly. About monthly or every 40 washes is given as a guide on applicable models.
Panasonic guidance Some guidance uses an approximately two-month interval, adjusted for usage conditions. Intervals are examples, not a replacement for the model manual. Not stated as a universal value.

Troubleshoot odors, residue, leaks, and drainage

Symptom Likely checks Next action
Musty smell returns quickly Door and drawer closed while damp; wet laundry left inside; residue in gasket or drawer; excess detergent Adopt the after-load routine, clean the drawer and gasket, run the approved empty tub cycle, and reduce detergent to the manual’s dose.
Black or slimy gasket buildup Moisture and detergent film trapped in folds Remove debris, use only the manual-approved mild soap or diluted solution, rinse, and dry. Replace damaged rubber.
Water remains in the drum Blocked pump filter, kinked drain hose, or a drain fault Unplug and follow the filter-draining procedure. If the machine still will not drain, stop using it and arrange service.
Water leaks from the door Debris or hair in the gasket, torn seal, overloaded drum, or loose filter cap Inspect and clean the seal, verify the filter cap, and run a small test load. A torn gasket needs replacement.
Drawer overflows or remains full Blocked siphon, hardened detergent, incorrect compartment, or low water pressure Remove and brush-clean the drawer and housing. Check the manual before inspecting inlet screens.
Filling is unusually slow Clogged inlet screens or restricted supply Shut off water and inspect only as the manual permits; hard-water scale may require service.

A sewage-like odor that remains after the washer is clean can indicate a drain connection or plumbing problem rather than a dirty gasket. Persistent leaks, electrical faults, a damaged door lock, or repeated failure to drain are service issues. Keep the machine unplugged if water is reaching electrical components.

A practical recurring checklist

Every load or wash day

  • Remove clothing promptly.
  • Wipe the gasket folds and glass.
  • Leave the door and drawer ajar for ventilation.

Weekly to monthly

  • Remove and rinse the detergent drawer.
  • Brush residue from inserts and the dispenser housing.
  • Inspect the gasket for trapped debris or damage.

Monthly, unless the manual says otherwise

  • Run the empty tub-clean cycle.
  • Clean the pump filter if your washer has an accessible one.
  • Perform the model-approved gasket treatment.

Periodically

  • Inspect inlet screens and hoses according to the manual.
  • Review detergent quantity when loads are small, lightly soiled, or washed in soft water.
  • Check the service area after filter cleaning for leaks.

When cleaning is no longer the solution

Arrange qualified service when the washer repeatedly leaks after the gasket and filter are clean, cannot drain, shows an electrical fault, has a damaged door lock, or produces a persistent sewage-like odor despite correct cleaning and detergent use. Keep the washer unplugged if there is active leaking near electrical parts. Do not remove sealed panels or bypass a door-lock mechanism.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest long-term approach is simple: dry the moisture traps after use, use the correct detergent sparingly, run the machine’s own cleaning cycle on its stated schedule, and treat every chemical and disassembly step as model-specific.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean a front-load washing machine?

Wipe the gasket and ventilate after every load. Drawer cleaning ranges from weekly to monthly in manufacturer guidance. Many machines call for an empty tub-clean cycle and pump-filter cleaning about monthly, while some Samsung models give approximately every 40 washes and some Panasonic guidance uses about every two months. Follow your model’s manual and shorten the interval when residue or odor returns quickly.

Should laundry be inside during a tub-clean cycle?

Usually no. LG specifically says not to add laundry during Tub Clean. Run the cycle empty unless your washer’s instructions explicitly say otherwise.

Do I need a washer-cleaning tablet?

Not always. Samsung says added cleaner is usually unnecessary for Self Clean or Pure Cycle, although a washer-specific cleaner may help if odor persists. Whirlpool permits affresh, liquid chlorine bleach, or another approved washer cleaner for certain Clean Washer cycles. Use a product only when the exact manual allows it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use bleach and vinegar together?

No. Never mix them. LG guidance says to use one or the other only when the washer instructions permit it. Concentrated bleach should not be poured directly on the gasket; diluted use, if allowed, must follow the manual.

Why does my washer still smell after a cleaning cycle?

Check the gasket folds, detergent drawer, pump filter, and detergent dose. Moisture, trapped lint, softener film, wet laundry left in the drum, and excess detergent can all recreate odor. If the smell is sewage-like or persists after correct cleaning, arrange qualified service.

How do I clean a front-load washer pump filter?

Confirm that your model has an accessible filter. Turn off and unplug as directed, let hot water cool, place towels and a shallow container under the service flap, drain through the emergency hose if provided, then remove and rinse the filter. Refit the filter and hose cap firmly and check for leaks during a short rinse or drain.

What should I do if the gasket is torn?

Stop relying on cleaning to solve the problem. A torn or permanently deformed seal can leak and should be replaced using the correct model part by a qualified technician or according to the manufacturer’s service procedure.

The Bottom Line

For a fresher front-load washer, remove wet clothes promptly, wipe and dry the gasket, leave the door and drawer open, dose HE detergent carefully, and clean the drawer, tub, gasket, and accessible filter on the schedule your manual specifies. Chemical choices and disassembly steps are model-specific: never mix bleach and vinegar, never use straight bleach on a gasket when the manual warns against it, and stop for service when leaks, drainage failures, electrical faults, or damaged seals persist.
