Switch off and unplug a fan heater or air purifier before cleaning. Then follow the manual for that exact model: heater grilles, purifier sensors, and filters do not all have the same cleaning rules. Some prefilters can be cleaned, while other filters must be replaced rather than washed or vacuumed.
Before you clean either appliance
- Switch it off and unplug it. Manufacturer instructions from Vornado for its heaters and from Rowenta, MANN+HUMMEL and Bosch for specified purifiers all call for disconnecting power before maintenance.
- Check the model’s manual. Confirm which surfaces, grilles, sensors and filter layers can be cleaned, and which need replacement. Do not dismantle an appliance or use a cleaning method that its instructions do not permit.
- Keep moisture away unless the instructions allow it. If a permitted method uses a damp cloth or swab, let the part dry before reassembly and use.
How to clean a fan heater
For Vornado heaters, the manufacturer recommends a soft, dry cloth for the exterior and a household vacuum’s brush attachment for open grilles. It also recommends periodically using compressed air to clear accumulated internal dust, hair and debris. These are Vornado-specific instructions, not permission to open or blow compressed air into every heater.

Use only the grille-cleaning method allowed by your heater’s manual. Do not insert tools through openings, remove covers or direct compressed air inside unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Vornado recommends cleaning the outside of its heater weekly; use your own model’s schedule if it differs.

How to clean an air purifier
Exterior, vents and sensors
Wipe exterior surfaces only as the model’s instructions allow. MANN+HUMMEL specifies a soft, dry cloth and warns against liquid cleaners for the OurAir SQ500. Rowenta permits a slightly damp cloth for the PU8080 but cautions against abrasive materials.

Sensor care varies, too. Rowenta recommends regularly vacuuming the sensor inlets on the PU8080. Bosch recommends monthly sensor cleaning for certain Air 1000, 2000, 4000 and 6000 models, using a damp cotton swab followed by a dry one. MANN+HUMMEL says not to vacuum the OurAir SQ500’s air-quality sensor. Check your model’s instructions before touching or vacuuming a sensor.
Filters: clean only layers identified as cleanable
There is no universal way to clean an air purifier filter. A dusty appearance does not mean a filter can safely be washed or vacuumed. Follow the manual and filter-life indicator, clean only layers the manufacturer identifies as cleanable, and replace other filter media as directed.

- Rowenta PU8080: The manufacturer says to clean the prefilter with a dry cloth every 2 to 4 weeks. It identifies that prefilter as the only cleanable layer in the described filter combination. Replace the 3-in-1 filter every 12 months and replace the NanoCaptur+ filter according to its color indicator.
- MANN+HUMMEL OurAir SQ500: Its filter is neither washable nor vacuum-cleanable. The manufacturer directs owners to use the original compatible replacement filter.
- Dyson 360° Glass HEPA + Carbon filter: For the compatible models covered by Dyson’s guidance, replace the filter every 12 months or when the machine notifies you.
For Bosch, the manufacturer recommends monthly cleaning of internal filter media for the listed Air 500 and Air 1000, 2000, 4000 and 6000 lines. The specific cleaning procedure depends on the model, so consult its manual; Bosch also says to replace the filter before the life display reaches zero.

Reassemble and check before use
- Install the filter correctly and close the cover. MANN+HUMMEL’s instructions say to operate the OurAir SQ500 with its filter installed and cover closed.
- Keep the air inlet and outlet unobstructed.
- Make sure any part cleaned with an approved damp method is dry before use.
- When replacing a filter, verify the purifier’s exact model and the replacement part number. For example, Dyson lists part 965432-01 for compatible Pure Hot+Cool models; compatibility should be checked against the individual appliance.
