How to Clean and Maintain a Coffee Grinder Safely

To clean an electric coffee grinder safely, empty the beans, unplug it, remove only the parts its manual identifies as user-removable, and brush dry grounds from the burrs and outlet. Wash only approved removable pieces, keep burrs dry unless the manufacturer explicitly permits otherwise, and use cleaning tablets only for models that support them. Tablets remove routine oil and particle residue; they are not a cure for a clogged grinder.

The safest routine is model-aware rather than one-size-fits-all. A Baratza Sette 270, Breville BCG820 and Fellow Ode have different access points, washable parts and tablet directions. Use the sequence below as a framework, then let the manual for your exact model control every detail involving disassembly, dose, settings and troubleshooting.

What you need before you start

  • A stiff-bristled, non-metal coffee-grinder brush approved for use around your grinder’s burrs.
  • A dry, lint-free cloth for the exterior and accessible surfaces.
  • Warm water and mild dish soap for removable parts that the manual says are washable.
  • Manufacturer-approved coffee-grinder cleaning tablets, if your model’s instructions allow them.
  • Your exact grinder manual. Burr access, washable components, tablet quantity and unclogging steps vary by model.

Set the manual beside the grinder before opening anything. Look specifically for the sections on emptying the hopper, locking or removing the upper burr, permitted cleaning products, tablet dosage, post-cleaning purging and unclogging. If the manual does not identify a part as user-removable, do not treat a generic video or another brand’s instructions as permission to remove it.

Do not improvise access to the motor, wiring or fixed burr carrier. A procedure that is safe for one grinder can damage another.

Safety rules that prevent most damage

Unplug before internal cleaning

Empty the hopper and follow the manual’s instructions for running out or removing remaining beans. Unplug the grinder before removing a hopper, opening a burr chamber or brushing inside. The Breville BCG820 cleaning sequence and Baratza Sette 270 documentation both place emptying and unplugging before internal work. Do not rely on a control panel being switched off; physical disconnection prevents an accidental start while your fingers or brush are near the burrs.

Keep burrs dry

Water can promote rust and leave moisture where grounds compact. Baratza’s Sette 270 instructions say not to wash its burrs; the hopper, hopper lid and grounds bin can be hand-washed, rinsed and dried separately. Breville’s BCG820 manual likewise limits warm, soapy washing to specified containers, lids and hopper parts and says not to put grinder parts or accessories in a dishwasher. These limits are model-specific, but they illustrate the safe default: brush burrs dry unless your own manual explicitly says otherwise.

Never use rice as a substitute cleaner

Breville’s grinder guidance warns that rice can damage a burr grinder. Use the cleaning method specified for your model instead of feeding rice, grains or other household abrasives through the burrs. A material that seems dry and inexpensive can still create a problem that tablets and brushing were never designed to solve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not force stuck parts

Locking tabs, alignment marks and grind-adjustment rings differ. If a burr or hopper will not release using the documented motion, stop and consult the manual or the manufacturer’s support procedure rather than applying tools or twisting harder. Forcing a misaligned component can damage a carrier, seal or safety interlock.

A safe general cleaning sequence

The following is a framework, not a replacement for the instructions for your model.

  1. Empty the grinder. Remove beans from the hopper. If the manual directs you to run the grinder empty, do so briefly and stop it as instructed. Do not keep running an empty motor longer than the documented procedure.
  2. Disconnect power. Unplug the grinder before opening or brushing any internal area.
  3. Remove only approved parts. Take off the hopper, grounds bin or upper burr only when the manual identifies that part as user-removable. Keep track of alignment marks and locking positions as each part comes off.
  4. Brush loose grounds dry. Brush accessible burr surfaces, the burr chamber and the grind outlet with a stiff, non-metal brush. Work grounds toward the opening instead of packing them deeper into the chute.
  5. Clean the outlet. Brush the chute or outlet where grounds leave the burrs. A buildup here can look like a burr problem because it restricts the flow of freshly ground coffee.
  6. Wash approved removable pieces. Use warm soapy water only on components the manual lists as washable. Rinse them and let them dry completely before reassembly.
  7. Inspect before reassembly. Check for dampness, compacted grounds, damaged burr teeth, missing seals or foreign objects. If you see damage or a part that does not look seated correctly, pause before operating the grinder.
  8. Reinstall and lock parts. Align marks and engage the lock exactly as shown in the manual. A mis-seated upper burr or hopper can change grind size or prevent the motor from starting.
  9. Purge after tablet cleaning. If you used tablets, follow the model’s instructions for grinding and discarding a small amount of coffee afterward. This removes tablet residue from the approved coffee path before normal brewing.

On the Breville BCG820, the documented sequence includes removing the hopper and upper burr, brushing the upper burr, lower burr and grind outlet, then reinstalling and locking the burr and hopper. Treat that as an example of one model’s procedure, not a universal disassembly order.

Model-specific examples: what the manuals actually allow

Grinder documentation Cleaning access and washable parts Interval or tablet guidance
Baratza Sette 270, manual v2.1 (August 27, 2019) Use a stiff brush for burr cleaning. The hopper, hopper lid and grounds bin may be hand-washed; do not wash the burrs because they can rust. For daily use, clean the burrs every few months with a stiff brush or tablets. Tablets will not clear a clogged grinder. After tablet use, process about 30 g of coffee and discard it, following the manual’s full procedure.
Breville BCG820 manual Remove the hopper and upper burr as directed; brush the upper burr, lower burr and grind outlet. The grounds container and lid, hopper and hopper lid may be washed in warm soapy water, rinsed and thoroughly dried. Do not use a dishwasher, abrasive cleaners or steel wool. The manual’s removal, cleaning and reinstallation sequence takes precedence over a generic schedule.
Fellow Ode support guidance Clean the burr chamber by brushing or use tablets only as the Ode instructions permit. For a grinder used daily, Fellow advises cleaning at least every three months. Its guidance also calls for grinding about 30 g of coffee after tablets and discarding that coffee.

These are examples, not a universal specification. Your grinder may have a different burr-removal method, different approved products or no user-accessible burr at all. Even two grinders from the same brand can use different tablet amounts or access instructions, so check the full model number before buying parts or supplies.

Dry brushing: the routine method

When brushing is appropriate

Brushing is suited to loose grounds on accessible burrs, the chamber and the outlet. It gives you direct control over where residue goes and avoids introducing moisture into the grinder. It is also the practical first step when you can see dry grounds but the grinder is still dispensing normally.

How to brush without damaging burrs

  1. Unplug the grinder and remove the approved access parts.
  2. Hold the grinder so loosened grounds can fall toward the opening or grounds path.
  3. Use the brush specified by the manufacturer. A stiff, non-metal brush is a practical choice when the manual permits one.
  4. Brush the upper burr, lower burr and outlet gently enough that you do not bend bristles into bearings, seals or wiring.
  5. Remove the loosened grounds from the chamber and wipe the exterior with a dry cloth.
  6. Allow every washed part to dry fully before replacing it.

Do not scrape burr edges with a knife, screwdriver or other metal object. Do not spray cleaner into the chamber. If brushing dislodges a compact mass that does not move through the outlet, stop and switch to the manufacturer’s clog procedure rather than repeatedly forcing the grinder to run.

Cleaning tablets: useful for residue, useless for clogs

What tablets are designed to do

Manufacturer-described grinder tablets dislodge coffee particles and absorb or remove coffee-oil residue during routine maintenance. They can reach areas that are difficult to brush, but only when the grinder’s manual approves the product and procedure. Tablets are a maintenance option, not a replacement for inspecting the burr chamber and outlet.

How to use them safely

  1. Check the exact manual for tablet compatibility, quantity and grind-setting instructions.
  2. Empty the hopper and, where instructed, run the grinder empty.
  3. Process the specified tablet amount.
  4. Grind and discard the post-cleaning purge amount required by the manual. Baratza Sette 270 and Fellow Ode guidance each specify approximately 30 g of coffee after tablet cleaning.
  5. Inspect the outlet and grounds bin, then reinstall parts and return the grinder to your normal setting.

Do not assume a tablet dose or purge amount from another model applies to yours. The Sette 270 manual states: “Note that tablets will not clear a clogged grinder.” If coffee is not dispensing normally, stop treating the problem as routine residue and use the model-specific unclogging instructions. If your manual gives no tablet procedure, do not invent one based on a product label intended for another grinder.

How to tell routine buildup from a clog

Likely routine residue

  • The grinder still dispenses coffee, but the outlet has a thin coating of oily grounds.
  • Small amounts of stale coffee remain around the burr chamber after normal use.
  • Brush cleaning restores normal flow without unusual motor noise.

Possible clog or mechanical problem

  • The motor runs but little or no coffee exits.
  • Grounds accumulate above the outlet or form a compact plug.
  • The grinder stalls, changes pitch, trips protection or stops dispensing after a coarse-to-fine adjustment.
  • A burr will not rotate freely when the manual says it should, or you find a foreign object.

What to do

  1. Switch off and unplug the grinder.
  2. Empty the hopper and remove only the parts permitted by the manual.
  3. Brush visible grounds from the approved access points.
  4. Follow the manufacturer’s dedicated unclogging procedure. Baratza provides a separate model-specific procedure and explicitly distinguishes it from tablet cleaning.
  5. If the blockage remains, contact manufacturer support before deeper disassembly. Replacement burrs or other parts must match the exact model.

Do not keep feeding tablets into a grinder that has stopped dispensing. A tablet cannot substitute for removing a compact obstruction, checking a foreign object or correcting a mis-seated component.

Choosing brushing, tablets or both

Question Dry brushing Cleaning tablets
Is it approved? Usually permitted where the manual provides burr or chamber access, but confirm the brush type and access method. Only use when the exact manual permits tablets and gives a dose or procedure.
Primary target Loose grounds on accessible burr and outlet surfaces. Routine coffee-particle and oil residue inside approved pathways.
Does it clear a clog? It may remove a visible, loose obstruction; use the manual’s clog procedure for a compact blockage. No. The Baratza Sette 270 manual expressly says tablets will not clear a clogged grinder.
Disassembly needed Possibly; some grinders require hopper or upper-burr removal. Usually less disassembly, but the product still must be compatible with the model.
Aftercare Remove loosened grounds and reinstall dry parts. Some manufacturers require grinding and discarding about 30 g of coffee afterward.

There is no controlled head-to-head evidence here establishing that one method universally cleans better. Select the method your manufacturer supports for the residue or fault you actually have. A brush may be the better choice for visible debris at an accessible outlet, while approved tablets can address routine oil residue in pathways you cannot reach directly.

Cleaning removable parts without trapping moisture

Separate the hopper, lid and grounds bin only as the manual allows. Wash approved pieces in warm water with mild dish soap, rinse thoroughly and dry them completely. Leave them open to air-dry rather than reassembling while water remains around seams or the outlet. A dry cloth can remove surface water, but hidden moisture still needs time to evaporate.

For the Breville BCG820, the manual specifically identifies the container, lid, hopper and hopper lid for warm soapy washing and prohibits dishwasher cleaning, abrasive cleaners and steel wool. Baratza’s Sette 270 instructions similarly call for hand-washing its hopper, hopper lid and grounds bin while keeping the burrs dry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not wash a motor housing or fixed burr carrier. If a part is not clearly listed as removable and washable, treat it as dry-clean only and ask the manufacturer if its status is unclear. Never pour water into the grinder to flush grounds toward the outlet.

Build a maintenance schedule around use

Maintenance task When to do it Why it matters
Empty retained beans and brush visible grounds Whenever you change beans, notice accumulation or finish a deep-cleaning session. Limits stale coffee and keeps the outlet from packing.
Clean burrs with a brush Use the manual’s interval. Baratza says every few months for daily Sette 270 use; Fellow says at least every three months for a daily-used Ode. Removes loose grounds before they combine with oil.
Use tablets Only at the model’s recommended interval and dose. Targets routine oil and particle residue in approved pathways.
Inspect burrs and alignment During each internal cleaning. Reveals damage, foreign objects or a burr that has not seated correctly.
Replace parts When a burr or component is worn, damaged or missing, using exact model compatibility. Restores safe operation without forcing an incompatible part.

“Every few months” and “at least every three months” are manufacturer examples, not a universal cleaning statistic. Heavy use, oily beans, humid storage and frequent fine grinding can require attention sooner; your manual remains the authority. If the grinder is used only occasionally, follow the manual’s condition-based advice rather than assuming a calendar interval from another model.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Putting burrs under a tap

Fix: Stop, dry only the parts the manual permits you to dry, and check the manufacturer’s instructions. For models such as the Sette 270, burr washing is specifically prohibited because of rust risk.

Running tablets through a blocked grinder

Fix: Unplug the grinder and follow its unclogging procedure. Tablets are for residue, not compacted blockages.

When cleaning is not enough

Persistent stalling, a damaged burr tooth, a missing seal, unusual motor noise or repeated clogging after the documented procedure indicates a service or parts issue rather than ordinary residue. Identify the exact model and consult the manufacturer’s support documentation before ordering a replacement burr or other component. Compatibility matters: a part that fits physically may still be wrong for the grinder’s calibration or safety interlock.

Keep a record of the last cleaning, the bean type and the grind setting when a fault appears. That information helps support distinguish oily buildup, a foreign object, incorrect reassembly and worn components without requiring unsafe experimentation. Baratza support documentation lists model-specific troubleshooting and parts, so use the grinder’s exact model identification when requesting help.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean a coffee grinder used every day?

Follow your model’s manual. Baratza’s Sette 270 manual says daily users should clean the burrs every few months with a stiff brush or tablets. Fellow’s Ode guidance says at least every three months for daily use. Those are manufacturer examples, not a universal schedule; your grinder’s design and instructions take priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I wash coffee-grinder burrs with water?

Usually not unless the exact manual explicitly permits it. Baratza says not to wash Sette 270 burrs because they can rust. Keep burrs dry, brush them, and wash only removable parts the manufacturer lists as washable.

Are coffee-grinder cleaning tablets safe for every grinder?

No. Use tablets only when the exact model manual approves them and specifies the procedure. Tablet quantity, grind setting and post-cleaning purge can differ, and a product approved for one grinder is not automatically approved for another.

Will cleaning tablets unclog my grinder?

No. The Baratza Sette 270 manual expressly says tablets will not clear a clogged grinder. Unplug the machine and follow its dedicated unclogging procedure. Contact manufacturer support before deeper disassembly if the blockage remains.

How much coffee should I discard after using tablets?

Baratza’s Sette 270 and Fellow’s Ode guidance each call for approximately 30 g of coffee to be ground and discarded after tablet cleaning. Do not transfer that amount to another model unless its own manual gives the same instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I put the hopper or grounds bin in the dishwasher?

Only if your manual specifically allows it. The Breville BCG820 manual says not to put grinder parts or accessories in a dishwasher and permits warm soapy washing for specified containers, lids and hopper parts. Baratza’s Sette 270 guidance calls for hand-washing its hopper, hopper lid and grounds bin.

What brush should I use on burrs?

Use the brush type specified by the manufacturer. Baratza identifies a stiff brush, and Breville’s BCG820 sequence uses a brush for the upper burr, lower burr and outlet. A stiff, non-metal brush is a practical dry-cleaning choice when your manual permits it; do not use knives, screwdrivers or steel wool.

What should I do if the grinder still stalls after cleaning?

Treat persistent stalling, unusual motor noise, a damaged burr, a missing seal or repeated clogging as a possible service or parts problem. Unplug the grinder, document the model and grind setting, and consult manufacturer support. Order replacement burrs or other parts only after confirming exact model compatibility.

Is brushing better than tablets?

Neither method is universally superior. Brushing physically removes loose grounds from accessible burr and outlet surfaces, while approved tablets target routine particle and oil residue in supported pathways. Choose according to the residue, access and procedure your manufacturer documents; no controlled comparison establishes a universal winner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Empty the grinder, unplug it, and follow the exact model manual before opening the burr area. Brush accessible burrs and the outlet dry, hand-wash only approved removable parts, and let them dry completely. Use tablets only when the manufacturer permits them, then discard the specified purge coffee—about 30 g for the Baratza Sette 270 and Fellow Ode guidance. If coffee stops dispensing, do not expect tablets to clear the clog: use the model-specific unclogging procedure or contact support.
