How to Clean and Lubricate a Multitool When Its Joints Get Stiff

A stiff multitool joint usually needs cleaning before it needs more oil. Remove lint, grit, and sticky residue, wash the tool only in a way its manufacturer permits, dry it completely, then place a small drop of suitable lubricant on the pivot and other friction surfaces. Open and close the implements to distribute the oil and wipe away all visible excess. Do not put a multitool in a dishwasher, and do not disassemble or adjust a persistently stiff tool without model-specific instructions.

Why a multitool joint becomes stiff

Multitool pivots operate in a dirty environment. Pocket lint, fine grit, dried food, skin oils, sap, and adhesive residue can collect between blades, liners, springs, plier pivots, and combination-tool joints. A thin film of contamination increases friction and can make an implement feel tight even when the hardware is undamaged.

Water exposure creates a different risk. Fresh water left in a joint can promote corrosion, while salt water is especially aggressive. Oil applied over wet grit or sticky residue may temporarily change the feel but can trap the contamination and make later cleaning harder. The reliable order is therefore inspect, remove contamination, wash if appropriate, dry completely, lubricate, exercise the joint, and wipe off excess.

Stiffness that remains after that routine may indicate corrosion, a bent component, damaged washers or springs, or a problem that requires the maker’s service procedure. The routine below is for normal maintenance, not a universal repair method.

What you need before starting

  • A clean, well-lit work surface and a tray or cloth to catch small debris.
  • A soft brush, wooden toothpick, cotton swabs, or lint-free cloth for loose dirt.
  • Warm water and a mild detergent only when the tool’s care instructions allow water cleaning.
  • A dry cloth and enough time for the tool to dry completely.
  • A precision applicator or oil bottle that can place one small drop at a pivot.
  • The lubricant specified by the tool maker, or a product whose use is explicitly permitted for that model.

Keep blades closed whenever practical and work slowly around cutting edges. If the tool has a locking blade, engage the lock only when the manufacturer’s instructions say it is safe to do so; never put a finger in the path of a closing implement.

Step-by-step: free a stiff multitool joint

1. Identify every affected joint

Open the implement only as far as needed to inspect it. Check both sides of the pivot, the spaces between folded blades, the backsprings or liners, and any combination-tool or plier joint. Look for compacted lint, sand, dried food, black or orange corrosion, and glossy sticky deposits. Test each implement separately so you know whether the problem is local or affects the entire tool.

2. Remove loose debris without forcing the mechanism

Brush or wipe away material that is sitting on the surface. A wooden toothpick can lift packed lint from a narrow gap without the sharp edge of a metal pick. Do not pry against a spring, grind at a pivot, or force an implement through a hard stop. Removing what is loose first prevents the wash water from turning dry grit into abrasive slurry.

3. Clean sticky residue using an approved method

Water is not automatically safe for every multitool, so follow the instructions for the particular model. Leatherman’s care guidance permits mild detergent and water for sticky substances between blades. Victorinox guidance says to work dirty or sticky blades in warm water, opening and closing them several times until they move freely. These are maker-specific instructions, not a blanket rule for every brand or construction.

Use only a small amount of mild detergent, avoid abrasive cleaners, and keep the cutting edges under control while moving the implements. If the tool’s instructions do not permit water cleaning, use the specified dry-cleaning method instead. Never substitute a dishwasher cycle for hand cleaning.

4. Rinse appropriately after salt-water exposure

If the tool has been exposed to salt water and its instructions allow rinsing, flush it with fresh water to remove salt, then dry it promptly. Leatherman specifically advises rinsing salt-water-exposed tools in fresh water, drying them, and applying light oil. Salt crystals left in a pivot can continue attracting moisture even when the outside looks clean.

5. Dry the entire tool

Shake out trapped water, wipe all accessible surfaces, and leave the implements open in a dry, ventilated place until no moisture remains in the joints. Dry between blades, around springs, inside the plier pivot, and under any combination tool. Victorinox says to allow a washed tool to dry completely; Leatherman also treats cleaning and drying as part of corrosion prevention.

Do not apply the final lubricant while water is still visible or suspected inside a joint. A water-displacing cleaner may be permitted for some Leatherman tools, but it does not remove the need to follow the model’s instructions and complete the drying step.

6. Put one small drop at the friction surfaces

Place the drop where metal parts rotate or rub: the main pivot, the gap between a blade and its liner or spring, the combination-tool joint, or the Swiss Tool plier joint when applicable. Aim the applicator precisely; flooding the handle creates a mess and does not improve lubrication.

Leatherman recommends a PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant for pivoting or wear areas. Its maintenance guidance also says a low-viscosity oil such as WD-40, Liquid Wrench, or CRC 3-36 can be used for cleaning and helping force moisture from joints. Those functions should not be confused: a cleaner or moisture-displacing oil is not necessarily the maker’s preferred final wear lubricant.

Victorinox recommends Multi-Tool Oil for moving parts and joints. Its care instructions specify a drop between blades and the casing or springs and at other friction surfaces; its current guidance also identifies moving parts, combination-tool joints, and Swiss Tool plier joints as application points.

7. Work the joint through its movement

Open and close the implement slowly through its normal range. For a plier pivot, operate the handles repeatedly without snapping them shut. This distributes the oil across the contact surfaces and helps carry a thin film into the joint. Stop if you feel a hard obstruction, grinding, or a sudden change that suggests damage rather than ordinary friction.

8. Wipe away visible oil

Use a clean, lint-free cloth or swab around the pivot and adjacent handle surfaces. Leave a barely visible lubricating film, not a wet handle. Excess oil attracts pocket lint, can migrate onto blades, and may contaminate anything the tool touches. Open and close the implement once more after wiping, then remove any oil that reappears at the edges.

Manufacturer guidance: what differs by tool

There is no single lubricant or washing method that is universal across multitools. The following comparison separates the published guidance for two common makers from general principles.

Victorinox’s official cleaning-and-care instruction is explicit: “Multi-tools should never be cleaned in a dishwasher.” A dishwasher combines heat, detergent, forceful spray, and prolonged moisture; even a stainless-looking tool can contain springs, liners, coatings, or plastic parts that those conditions may harm.

Choosing the right lubricant

Use the maker’s specified product first

The safest choice is the lubricant named in the tool’s own manual or care page. Product recommendations can reflect the tool’s metals, plastics, coatings, seals, and intended use. If the manual distinguishes between a flushing oil and a pivot lubricant, use each only for the stated purpose.

Separate cleaning or water displacement from final lubrication

A low-viscosity oil can help carry moisture or loosen contamination, but the final film at a high-friction pivot may call for a different formulation. Cleaners that evaporate or migrate quickly may not provide the lasting lubrication the maker expects. Read the label and the tool instructions rather than treating every spray oil as interchangeable.

Consider food-contact use

If the tool is used around food, camping meals, or food preparation, check whether the lubricant is suitable for incidental food contact. Victorinox lists its Multi Tool Oil, item 4.3302, as a 10 ml oil intended to lubricate and protect against corrosion and says it meets NSF H1 requirements. That specification describes the listed product; it does not make every multitool oil food-contact suitable.

Prefer precise application

A needle tip, dropper, or small bottle makes it easier to oil one pivot without soaking the handle. Precision also reduces the amount that can reach a blade edge, pocket fabric, or food surface. Whatever applicator you use, wipe the tip before storage so old lint does not re-enter the joint.

How much oil is enough?

Start with one small drop per affected friction point. The correct amount is enough to create a thin film after the joint is exercised, not enough to run down the handle. If the joint still feels dry after several cycles and no contamination is visible, add only a fraction of another drop. Repeated flooding is more likely to attract dirt than to solve stiffness.

After oiling, hold the tool over a cloth and check for migration. Oil emerging from a seam means the joint has more than it can retain. Wipe it, operate the implement again, and wipe once more before putting the tool in a pocket or case.

Common mistakes that make stiffness worse

  • Oiling before cleaning: Oil binds loose grit and sticky residue into an abrasive paste.
  • Leaving the tool wet: Moisture under a pivot can encourage corrosion even when the exterior appears dry.
  • Using a dishwasher: Victorinox explicitly prohibits this for multi-tools.
  • Using harsh solvents: Leatherman warns that acetone and brake cleaners can damage plastic components.
  • Forcing a locked or obstructed implement: Excess force can bend liners, damage a spring, or make a cutting edge slip.
  • Over-oiling: Excess lubricant collects lint and can spread onto blades or surfaces that should remain clean.
  • Applying a generic recommendation to another model: Maker-specific instructions take priority over advice written for a different construction.
  • Disassembling without a service procedure: Small springs, pivots, and washers may be difficult to reinstall correctly, and the sources for routine care do not establish a universal adjustment method.

If the joint is still stiff after cleaning and lubrication

Check for remaining contamination

Inspect the gap again under bright light. A dark line, gritty feel, or stiffness at only one point in the travel suggests debris may remain. Repeat the maker-approved cleaning and drying sequence rather than adding more oil.

Look for corrosion or mechanical damage

Orange spotting, pitting, a visibly bent implement, a cracked liner, or a pivot that feels rough in one direction is not normal dry friction. Stop forcing the tool. Corrosion can remove material from a bearing surface, and lubrication alone cannot restore missing metal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distinguish friction from a lock or spring problem

If the implement moves freely until a lock engages, the lock mechanism may be the source of resistance. If plier handles do not align, or a spring no longer returns the handle, the issue may require a replacement part or service. Do not file, bend, or enlarge a lock notch based only on a general cleaning guide.

Use official model-specific support

Persistent stiffness, looseness, corrosion, or damage should be taken to the manufacturer’s model-specific support or service channel. The routine care sources do not establish one universal repair threshold or a safe disassembly procedure for every multitool. Keep the model name, age, exposure history, and symptoms ready when contacting support.

Maintenance after the joint is smooth

After ordinary pocket carry

Brush away lint before it packs into the pivots. If an implement begins to feel dry or hesitant, clean the affected area and apply the maker-approved small drop rather than waiting for visible corrosion.

After wet or dirty work

Rinse only when the instructions allow it, remove mud or residue promptly, and complete the drying step before storage. Salt-water exposure deserves particular attention because fresh-water rinsing, drying, and light oiling are specifically advised in Leatherman’s care guidance.

Before storage

Store the tool clean and dry with visible excess oil removed. A breathable pouch is preferable to sealing residual moisture in an airtight container. Keep blades protected and avoid placing the tool next to abrasive grit or damp fabric.

Optional maintenance supplies

A small bottle of purpose-made multitool or pocketknife oil is usually sufficient for routine joint care. Victorinox lists Multi Tool Oil, item 4.3302, in a 10 ml package; the listing describes it as intended to lubricate and protect against corrosion and identifies NSF H1 compliance. The package size is a product specification, not a measure of how much oil a tool needs.

For broader maintenance, Leatherman’s Tool Maintenance Kit listing includes cleaning supplies, a cleaning mat, a microfiber cloth, lubrication oil, and a blade sharpener. A kit may be convenient, but someone trying to free one stiff joint generally needs only an appropriate lubricant and a way to clean and dry the tool. Choose supplies according to the tool maker’s instructions and your actual maintenance task.

A compact checklist

  1. Open the affected implement safely and identify the stiff pivot or friction surface.
  2. Brush or wipe away loose lint, grit, and residue.
  3. Use mild detergent and water or warm-water cleaning only if the model’s instructions permit it.
  4. Never use a dishwasher.
  5. Rinse salt-water exposure with fresh water when permitted.
  6. Dry every joint completely.
  7. Apply one small drop of the maker-recommended lubricant to the pivot or friction surface.
  8. Open and close the implement slowly to distribute the film.
  9. Wipe off all visible excess.
  10. Stop forcing the tool and contact model-specific support if stiffness, grinding, corrosion, looseness, or damage remains.
