After a wet or muddy hike, take removable insoles out of your shoes, remove loose dirt, and let them dry with good airflow. Use only the cleaning method approved for that exact insole, and put it back only when both the insole and shoe are fully dry.
What to do first after a wet hike
- Remove the insoles. Salomon and AKU both advise taking them out after a wet outing so they can dry separately from the shoes and get more airflow. Salomon’s hiking-shoe care guide and AKU’s boot-care FAQ give this advice.
- Brush or wipe off loose mud. Start gently, without scraping or pulling at the top fabric or edges. Then check the care instructions for the specific footbed before adding water or soap.
- Clean using the method allowed for that product. There is no universal rule that hiking insoles can be soaked, rinsed, or machine-washed.
- Air dry the insoles and shoes separately. Choose a well-ventilated spot and avoid excessive heat. Let both dry completely before reassembling the footwear.
Choose a cleaning method for the exact insole
Manufacturer directions differ, including between products that may look similar. These examples show why the insole’s own instructions matter; they are not interchangeable rules for every hiking footbed.

| Care guidance | What the manufacturer says | What that means for hikers |
|---|---|---|
| Superfeet | Superfeet’s insole-cleaning guidance allows handwashing with mild soap and warm water, gentle brushing with a soft-bristle toothbrush if needed, rinsing, and blotting excess water with a soft towel. It says not to machine-wash or machine-dry its insoles. | Hand-clean only if your Superfeet model’s care guidance applies; skip the washer and dryer. |
| Vionic | Vionic’s FAQ recommends wiping its products with a damp cloth and advises against submerging them. | Use a damp-cloth wipe for the Vionic products covered by that guidance, not a soak. |
| HAIX | HAIX’s footwear user guide permits cold, delicate machine washing for the removable insoles covered by that guide. | This is a specific exception for the guide’s footwear, not permission to machine-wash other hiking insoles. |
| Feelgrounds | Feelgrounds’ material-specific care guidance says its PU insole should not be fully submerged. | Check the material-specific direction rather than assuming all insoles from a brand—or all PU footbeds—share one cleaning method. |
| HANWAG | HANWAG’s boot-care guide recommends a damp-cloth wipe for leather insoles. | For leather, follow the applicable care advice and avoid treating it like a washable fabric footbed. |
Salomon’s hiking-shoe guide says to rinse or wash its insoles, but that instruction does not make soaking or machine-washing safe for other products. If the insole has no clear label, consult its maker or the footwear instructions before using water or detergent.
Dry insoles without damaging them
Set the removed insoles in a well-ventilated place and leave the shoes open so air can circulate inside them. Salomon recommends room-temperature drying and warns: “Do not leave them to dry in the sun or near a source of excessive heat like a radiator.” Superfeet likewise advises air-drying its insoles away from heat, while HANWAG cautions against heat and direct sunlight for footwear.
#1 Best Overall
- Hiking Insoles for Men and Women: The arch is medium and cushioned, not stiff. They are soft enough for comfort over ten miles, but firm enough to keep your foot steady on rocks and roots. You will really notice the difference on long downhills
- Up to 56% Shock Absorption: When you carry a full pack, every step can feel heavier. Our shock layer takes in up to 56% of impact before it reaches your knees and lower back, so you stay comfortable all day
- Up to 47% Energy Return: The arch returns up to 47% of the energy you put into each step, rather than just absorbing it. It also helps take pressure off your knees when you walk downhill. By the end of a long day, your legs will feel the difference
- Dry Feet on Tough Climbs: A breathable cover and non-sweat layer pull heat and moisture away from your skin, keeping your boots drier on steep climbs and in warm weather. Wet feet cause blisters, and this helps prevent them
- Sized for Men and Women who Hike: Use the size chart to find your fit. Place your boots' insoles on top and trim around the front for an exact fit. These insoles are light enough for trail runners and tough enough for backpacking boots
Do not rely on a fixed number of hours: the cited manufacturer instructions do not establish a universal drying time. Check that the insole and the inside of the shoe are dry before putting the footbed back. Salomon and AKU both specifically advise waiting until footwear or footbeds are fully dry before reinsertion.

First make sure they and the shoes have had enough time and airflow to dry fully. AKU says persistent odor may improve with better drying and occasional footbed replacement, but it does not set a universal replacement schedule. If replacement becomes necessary, choose a footbed compatible with the boot and your fit needs.
